REALIZATION OF SELF
2. THE CONCEPT OF SELF REALIZATION
• Definition: “fulfillment of oneself of the possibilities of
one’s character of personality”
• Reflection:
• In short terms, it is the understanding of whom oneself is, due
to circumstances over time.
• It’s the act of figuring out who you are on your own, based
on decisions or actions you do.
3. TYPES OF SELF REALIZATION
• Self realization can have many different meanings
• Over time changes in emotional/physical views of oneself
• Many events over time provide evidence of (a) characteristic(s)
in oneself
• Immediate instances of change due to single events
• When one single specific event changes the person(s)
• Group change
• When the same event(s) change a group of people, maybe
similarly or differently. Not everyone reacts the same to it, and
‘it’ can be several events, or just simply one.
4. ISHMAEL’S SELF REALIZATION
(INDIVIDUAL)
• One of the few main characters, Ishmael,
undergoes self realization throughout the story.
• Prior to war, condemns racism, after being shot uses racist
slur “Jap” and cusses their race.
• Severely hurt when Hatsue leaves him.
• Learns overtime that there are occurrences in life that are
uncontrollable, and need to be left alone while you control
what you can.
Why stress over the uncontrollable when you can spend your
time changing what can benefit you?
5. SAN PIEDRO’S SELF REALIZATION
(GROUP)
• In the story, the setting is San Piedro, mostly in the
courtroom. The citizens as an entire all go through
self realization, some more than others.
• The jurors are a great representation of the entire
town, as one smaller party.
• All except one are confident Kabuo is guilty, only because
he is Japanese-American, and they have opinions that
degrade races other than white.
• By the end of the trial, they learn they are wrong, reflect on
the trial, and realize that they were wrong and learn that
they’re racist views aren’t necessarily true.
6. THE HOLOCAUST
(GROUP NARRORATED BY ONE)
• Elie Weisel is the author of several books with the
Holocaust as the topic
• His self realization is “indifference”
• There is something that separates everyone in the
world, which is indifference
• We find conflict with each other because of our
differences
7. SELF REALIZATION TODAY
Apparent ways: helps teach and instruct people
how to learn about themselves more deeply
• Used now in religions
• Hinduism - Enlightenment and prayer
• Buddhism - Awakening
• Sikhism - ‘Atam-cheene’ is self analysis
Less apparent forms of self realization:
• Events involving
• Pressure (peer, anxiety, threats, etc.)
• Learning (school, by doing and learning from mistakes)

8. BENEFITS OF SELF REALIZATION
• Being at peace with yourself
• The better you know yourself, the easier it is to find what you
like, and how you fill your empty spaces
• It helps get rid of bad thoughts
• You can be happy in having that feeling of knowing, and
not having to contemplate decisions you don’t want to
make
• In religions previously noted, you are more faithful
and joyful
• It is deemed a success by religions to be more faithful,
because you are absent of worry and stress so you can just
be yourself
9. SELF REALIZATION V. MATURITY

Editor's Notes
Good afternoon, my name is Michael MacGillivray, and I will be presenting to you the theme of self realization, in several literary devices.
What is the meaning of self realization?
… As its found in the dictionary, it is the “fulfillment of oneself of the possibilities of one’s character of personality”.
I interpret that as the understanding of who oneself is, due to circumstances over time. You are truly figuring out who are you by learning from different experiences.
Per person and time, the type of self realization can be different, all depending on the situation the person is in. First there are the over time realizations that can be either physical or mental. Next, there is the immediate change because of one specific event that happens to the individual. Now, both of these forms can occur to a group of people as well, when 2 or more people undergo self realization.
Ishmael is one of the characters most often spoken about in the content of the book. What we first learn about him, is he condemns racism, but further along on the story, he says something that contradicts that statement. He uses the slur “jap” while cussing their race. Other events change him, for example when Hatsue leaves him broken down and hurt. What he learns overtime, is that there are events that happen to each person, that are uncontrollable… Let them go! Only spend your time on what you can control, don’t waste your time on what can’t change.
Now we look at self realization as a group. San Piedro refers to the entirety of the town, and the jurors for the trail are a great representation for the majority of citizens. Together they realize, maybe racism isn’t correct. Kabuo is proved innocent, which awakens the town as shock. A “Jap” innocent? No way! By the end of the trial, they realize and reflect, on the trial and learn their motives aren’t just, after Kabuo just proved he was innocent.
The holocaust, led Elie Weisel to write several inspiring books, with his own self realization as the topic of most of his writing; indifference. He learned, while undergoing the holocaust, that indifference is the evil of this world. It is the one thing that makes people mad, angry, confused, love, hate, appreciate, or even think of others. Because of who we are as different people, we find conflict with each other because of our differences.
Self realization is found everywhere in our lives; apparent or non apparent. For example, some apparent ways are used everyday in religions. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism are just a few great religions that have self realization in their teachings. Then for the less apparent ways, people learn about themselves just by living. Undergoing events that give put you under pressure, involve the concept of learning, or give you choices all gather information for yourself that lets you better understand who you are.
The are several beneficial reasons as to why self realization should be a part of everyone’s life. Being at peace with yourself so you can find what makes you happy is one, and another is the fact that it better helps you eradicate bad thoughts or feelings. You have a sense of knowing when you learn more and more about yourself. Also noted, is that religions believe that you are more successful in the more you know about yourself, because you can be more faithful. In being faithful, you are stress free, and worry free allowing you to be close to your religion and be yourself.
Maturity for a person, is the state, fact, or period of being mature, the completeness of natural growth and development. Self realization is a factor to it. By understanding yourself better, you become more mature as you have a better sense of knowledge in yourself and others. You learn what you do in certain situations.
To conclude, self realization is the fulfillment of oneself of the possibilities of one’s character of personality. This can be physical or mental, but the better understanding of yourself. It can occur under many different circumstances, only with one person, or maybe even millions in world wide events.
Thank you very much for viewing my presentation on the theme of Self Realization, I hope you take the information I spoke about and use in an effective way for yourself! Thank you!
