    Verizon announced what it says are the
      global telecom industry’s first energy-       Typical 20,000 sqft Data Center
                 To help Japan to reduce by
  efficiency standards, designed    meet its Kyoto Protocol target,
                                                          Uses 8 Megawatts
          NTT Group aims to reduce electric power consumption
  20% the power consumed by new telecom-
    related equipment starting 2010 to the level of 1990
                           by Jan. 1, 2009.

Why Care About Energy?

1.   Electricity costs rose 88% in US since 2003 (US EIA data)

     Energy has become a non-trivial OPEX item

2.   Worldwide legislation changes
     Energy efficiency and climate control
     EMEA: reduce CO2 by 20% by 2020
     UK: reduce CO2 by 20% by 2010
     Japan: reduce CO2 to 6% under 1990 level by 2010
     USA: no government goal yet (but likely to change)

3. Carriers and businesses are setting new targets
 Reduced energy consumption
 Reduced heat dissipation
        reduced space requirements (volume footprint)
What Does This Mean for Data Networking?


       Telecom facilities are power hogs
    •     Direct contributors to CO2 emission
    •     2-3x collateral energy loss (conversion, cooling)



       Data networking is still a growth industry
    •     Global connectivity relies massively on routing and switching
          and this dependency increases
    •     Significant increases in traffic are expected
    •     This should NOT result in higher OPEX

Worldwide legislation changes Energy efficiency and climate control EMEA: reduce CO2 by 20% by 2020 UK: reduce CO2 by 20% by 2010 Japan: reduce CO2 to 6% under 1990 level by 2010 USA: no government goal yet (but likely to change) 3. Carriers and businesses are setting new targets  Reduced energy consumption  Reduced heat dissipation  reduced space requirements (volume footprint)
