This document outlines the syllabus for a Literacy IIA class on Fridays during Autumn 2012. It details the textbook, materials needed each week, class goals of improving English skills, class rules around attendance and tardiness, grading breakdown which includes exams, vocabulary tests, and tasks, and the instructor's expectations around attitude, respect, and exploring concepts like human dignity. TEXTBOOK: Technologies of Today and Tomorrow ISBN 978-4-86312-106-5 (same as 1st semester)
MATERIALS: EVERY WEEK you will need your PC, 電源、LAN cable, and earphones. You will also need
a pencil and an eraser.
CLASS GOALS:
1. General English から Technical/Scientific English の基礎固めをする。
2. 英語で書かれたテクストから、内容・情報を正確に把握することが出来る。
3. 様々な理解ストラテジーを使うことができる。
4. 読み取った内容について、感想や意見を持ち、述べることが出来る。
5. 語彙力をつける。
CLASS RULES:
欠席は2回まで、３回=F評価
欠席は５回＝S評価(欠席過多)
90分授業の最初の１５分までは遅刻とし、遅刻は３回で欠席１回とみなされる。１５分を超える遅刻は欠席となる。
この授業に関連のないことをした場合：欠席とみなす
(例：ゲーム、化粧、居眠り)
GRADES FOR THIS COURSE:
期末試験: 40%
中間試験: 30%
語彙小テスト: 15%
授業中のタスクと宿題: 15%
EXPECTATIONS:
When you want to learn, I believe having the right attitude is most important. Know that I spend many
hours to make your lessons and be respectful. Know that your classmates want the same things in life
as you...happiness, friendship, success. Be kind. Know that you yourself are here because you are
intelligent and hard working. Respect yourself and your future too.
I believe deeply in the concept of Hominis Dignitati, 「人間の尊厳のため」and in the Golden Rule-
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” 「あなたが人にしてもらいたいようにあなたも人にしな
さい」.
I hope while you are at Nanzan, you will take time to explore, really, what those words mean.
You will lead a happier life all of your days by your efforts.
Our school has a powerful reputation…it’s a place that students every year fight to enter. Our
reputation grew because your sempai understood the kind of things I have been writing about. They
knew how to lift up themselves and each other. I look forward to seeing you continue their great
