Whether direct or indirect, the authors presented in this course each had or have a goal. In this Discussion, you will focus on social change and song. While songs are often written simply to entertain, songwriters also write songs to teach a lesson, support a cause, oppose a political idea, or raise awareness about an issue. Essentially, a song can embody a social change theme.
Song lyrics are a form of poetry set to music. You might not realize that what makes a song memorable or moving to you are the literary techniques the songwriter uses to convey her ideas.
In this Discussion, you work with song lyrics of your choosing—either from the list in this week’s Learning Resources or of your own selection—that represent social change as it relates to women in general. As you select a song, it is important to remember to focus on the

As noted throughout your texts, social movements have existed and evolved through many methods and vehicles. Music is one of those vehicles and music represents more than entertainment. It has spoken for generations, and exemplified belief systems.
For your final paper assignment, you are to write a 4-5 page research essay (excluding APA title page, appendix, and bibliography) that addresses the following questions and contexts. Consider the journey of social change that women have taken over the years: achieving the right to vote, to own property, to receive equal pay for equal work, to have equal access to professional opportunities, and to claim equal protections under the law, among many other changes—some of which continue to be ongoing efforts. Women could not have achieved these accomplishments without a social change vision.
Starting this week and continuing throughout the course, you begin to make connections between women’s writing and social change. Walden University defines positive social change as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies. Whether direct or indirect, the authors presented in this course each had or have a goal. Although they represent different generations and different outward focus, they share many similarities and, perhaps unknowingly, support the same mission of improving or advancing the experience of women’s lives.
In this Discussion, you will focus on social change and song. While songs are often written simply to entertain, songwriters also write songs to teach a lesson, support a cause, oppose a political idea, or raise awareness about an issue. Essentially, a song can embody a social change theme.
Song lyrics are a form of poetry set to music. You might not realize that what makes a song memorable or moving to you are the literary techniques the songwriter uses to convey her ideas.
In this Discussion, you work with song lyrics of your choosing—either from the list in this week’s Learning Resources or of your own selection—that represent social change as it relates to women in general. As you select a song, it is important to remember to focus on the

words in the song and not the sound of the music that accompanies it.

How are these definitions similar and different? How do they compare to your own interpretation of social change?

Synthesize what you have learned about media and society in this course through the writing of this final paper about music and its influences. Music is a medium that has shaped the ages. As noted throughout your texts, social movements have existed and evolved through many methods and vehicles. Music is one of those vehicles and music represents more than entertainment. It has spoken for generations, and exemplified belief systems.
For your final paper assignment, you are to write a 4-5 page research essay (excluding APA title page, appendix, and bibliography) that addresses the following questions and contexts. In this paper, explore the relationship of music to each decade from the 1960s through 2000-2010. Your paper should discuss high profile events or movements that happened in each decade and for each decade pick a song that personifies or represents the primary “mood” of the decade. In the essay:
1. cite examples of how activism and social justice are exemplified through music
2. show how technology and social media influenced the listener’s reactions
The summary portion of the essay (perhaps at least 3/4 page of the entire essay) should draw connections between the decades and synthesize your findings. The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. Overview:
Music has long been used by movements seeking social change. In the 1950s and '60s, this was
particularly true, as successful black and white musicians openly addressed the issues of the day.
During the '60s, popular white singers such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez lent both their names and
their musical talents to the American Civil Rights Movement. In fact, music long assisted those
working to win civil rights for African Americans. Freedom songs, often adapted from the music of the
black church, played an essential role in bolstering courage, inspiring participation, and fostering a
sense of community.
For your final project in this course, you will explore a special topic and artist in American Music that
is connected to American society and culture. Then you will create a PowerPoint presentation to
share with the class and exhibit what you have learned.

At the beginning of this week, I felt finding references for my research paper was a little bit difficult. My topic is “women in mass media” and my research question is “Why women are affected by the media the most?” I tried to search articles that were related to my research question through Cypress Library, Gale Literary Sources, and I found two articles from this source. They are “Selling the self: women and the feminine seduction of advertising” of Kristine Blair and “Gender Issues in Advertising Language” of Nancy Artz. In addition, I also did another searching on other resources and found one more article that was “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies” of Shelly Grabe. Overall, there was nothing resource that I thought it was the least helpful this week. However, I thought the Gale Literary Sources of Cypress Library was most helpful for me because it provided me two articles. During finding sources, I used keywords, such as “women”, “media effects”, and “advertising”, and I refined my keywords as I went along. Moreover, I also found more keywords, such as “meta-analysis” and “body image”. The database provided the most material for my topic was the result of the experiment in the article “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies”. I did not find sources from credible Internet sources. According to these article, I was able to find specific statistics to add to my essay. My impression overall of my research experience is writing a research paper is not easy and requires the writer to take time and follow the procedure to achieve it.

Objective:To better understand how musical expressions occur in a given time and place; and to have an experience of conducting et
hnographic fieldwork, a four-fold process that includes preparation, participant-observation in a community setting, analysis of data collected, and dissemination of findings.
Requirements:
1. Select a performance of live music this semester, at either an event sponsored by the university or off-campus. We will discuss your topic in class at some point. You may attend any type of event in which music is performed, including but not limited to: religious services on or off campus, cultural shows, sporting events, dances, weddings, karaoke, performances by the Music Department’s ensembles, street music, musicals, etc.
2. Decide soon what performance you will attend, including: the date and location, genre of music, names of performers (if known).
3. In addition, think of and write out (at least) five preliminary questions — pertaining to the performance, the music, and/or the community/culture — for which you hope to find answers in the course of attending the performance. You must include these questions into your paper, by working it into a paragraph of text. Also write about how you were able to find answers, or not.
4. Attend this performance of music. Be sure to arrive early and stay until the end of the performance. NOTE: You must attend a live show after reading this assignment (that is, you cannot watch a video, and you cannot write about something you’ve already seen).

The purpose of this assignment is to develop the skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and critically assess research materials. A series of biographical questions will be provided for each student to address during the course of their research.
Requirements:
The essays must be double-spaced and use Times New Roman, 12 Point Font.
Students are required to include an annotated bibliography with a minimum of six (6) sources cited (two books, two journals, and two web links). Both MLA and APA styles are acceptable.

At the beginning of this week, I felt finding references for my research paper was a little bit difficult. My topic is “women in mass media” and my research question is “Why women are affected by the media the most?” I tried to search articles that were related to my research question through Cypress Library, Gale Literary Sources, and I found two articles from this source. They are “Selling the self: women and the feminine seduction of advertising” of Kristine Blair and “Gender Issues in Advertising Language” of Nancy Artz. In addition, I also did another searching on other resources and found one more article that was “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies” of Shelly Grabe. Overall, there was nothing resource that I thought it was the least helpful this week. However, I thought the Gale Literary Sources of Cypress Library was most helpful for me because it provided me two articles. During finding sources, I used keywords, such as “women”, “media effects”, and “advertising”, and I refined my keywords as I went along. Moreover, I also found more keywords, such as “meta-analysis” and “body image”. The database provided the most material for my topic was the result of the experiment in the article “The Role of the Media in Body Image Concerns Among Women: A Meta-Analysis of Experimental and Correlational Studies”. I did not find sources from credible Internet sources. According to these article, I was able to find specific statistics to add to my essay. Overall what occurred in 2015 following the information of Volkswagen cheating the consumers, the market, and the EPA was fairly little in the grand scheme of things. However, what might Volkswagen do now to build back some of the trust within the corporate world? How can they redeem themselves economically? The first step arguably is to regain the trust of their shareholders and instill a set of ethics the likes of which cannot be questioned. Obviously, a drop in stock price is bad news, however, the company is by no means insolvent, and they quickly recovered following the incident. However ethics the company needs to advertise and explain to investors and to staff some sort of new ethical guidance that can convince people to purchase their products once again.
In regards to recovering legally, there’s been a fairly limited number of lawsuits, there were several major ones, however between the payouts of that and the fines levied against them from the EPA and other countries they seem to have paid the piper, the best way to address the issue legally and ethically would be to launch a voluntary recall in which people with the defeat devices may receive an upgrade at no cost to themselves. This would also address the philanthropic needs of the company. Additionally, many companies devote a sum of their profits to things that seem counter to their product, Coke for example sponsors huge numbers of athletic programs for children. Volkswagen may consider doing the same but planting some sort of forest to help deal with the carbon footprint. While I’m not the most creative individual in the world, it seems that there is any number of philanthropic things the company could do to earn them a “Subaru-Esque” reputation in the industry.
