Song lyrics are a form of poetry set to music. You might not realize that what makes a song memorable or moving to you are the literary techniques the songwriter uses to convey her ideas.
In this Discussion, you work with song lyrics of your choosing—either from the list in this week’s Learning Resources or of your own selection—that represent social change as it relates to women in general. As you select a song, it is important to remember to focus on the

The paper assignment for this course is intended to help you improve your critical thinking skills and to help you develop deeper connections between the material we are learning and real-life experiences. In particular, you can use this short essay as an opportunity to link the concepts we are learning in class with real-life examples. Music is part of everyone's life, and it can be quite influential. Considering the ways in which gender is represented in music is an important exercise in the sociology of human sexuality.
Instructions
Pick 10 songs with lyrics that pertain to gender. Carefully consider the lyrics, and
answer the following questions:
1. What messages about gender can you identify in the songs?
2. Describe the ways women and men are represented, giving specific lyrics as examples.
3. Do you think men and women are portrayed in positive or negative ways?
4. What kinds of masculinity and femininity are portrayed?
5. Do any of the songs inspire you? Challenge you? Offend you? Explain your answers!
Cite specific lyrics when answering these questions. You are not limited to these questions; they will get you going on your paper, but be creative in your analysis of the songs and see if you can incorporate pertinent points from the readings into your analysis.

Synthesize what you have learned about media and society in this course through the writing of this final paper about music and its influences. Music is a medium that has shaped the ages. As noted throughout your texts, social movements have existed and evolved through many methods and vehicles. Music is one of those vehicles and music represents more than entertainment. It has spoken for generations, and exemplified belief systems.
For your final paper assignment, you are to write a 4-5 page research essay (excluding APA title page, appendix, and bibliography) that addresses the following questions and contexts. In this paper, explore the relationship of music to each decade from the 1960s through 2000-2010. Your paper should discuss high profile events or movements that happened in each decade and for each decade pick a song that personifies or represents the primary “mood” of the decade. In the essay:
1. cite examples of how activism and social justice are exemplified through music
2. show how technology and social media influenced the listener’s reactions

About Explication:
Explication is the unraveling of a poem (or story or play), analyzing the poem word-by-word, line-by-line, or stanza-by-stanza. In unfolding the poem, address any literary devices you see: simile and metaphor, allusion, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, onomatopoeia, form, and other techniques (see Poetry.org). The paper assignment for this course is intended to help you improve your critical thinking skills and to help you develop deeper connections between the material we are learning and real-life experiences. In particular, you can use this short essay as an opportunity to link the concepts we are learning in class with real-life examples. Music is part of everyone's life, and it can be quite influential. Considering the ways in which gender is represented in music is an important exercise in the sociology of human sexuality.
Instructions
Pick 10 songs with lyrics that pertain to gender. Carefully consider the lyrics, and
answer the following questions:
1. What messages about gender can you identify in the songs?
2. Describe the ways women and men are represented, giving specific lyrics as examples.
3. Do you think men and women are portrayed in positive or negative ways?
4. What kinds of masculinity and femininity are portrayed?
5. Do any of the songs inspire you? Challenge you? Offend you? Explain your answers!
Cite specific lyrics when answering these questions. You are not limited to these questions; they will get you going on your paper, but be creative in your analysis of the songs and see if you can incorporate pertinent points from the readings into your analysis.

The Music Essay Assignment is perhaps most similar to the film essay. Both of these essays are reviews, and both of them need to follow a specific review format, with specifically defined content type. The music essay will share many aspects with reviews of albums or concerts that you may have read online (or will read online and quote from/analyze in your essay, if desired)—but the format of our music essay is distinct, just as the format of the film essay was distinct. Each of these essay types might be considered “ detailed, heavily structured reviews”
Music Assessment Essay Summary:
Write an essay which assesses a particular musical
product
, e.g. a CD, or a concert performance.
Your assessment should include an introduction to the artist and a thesis providing your overall judgment about the CD/performance, etc. You might provide background information, about where/how your chosen subject fits into the genre, and your should state how the particular CD/performance fits into the body of the artist’s work. Synthesize what you have learned about media and society in this course through the writing of this final paper about music and its influences. Music is a medium that has shaped the ages. As noted throughout your texts, social movements have existed and evolved through many methods and vehicles. Music is one of those vehicles and music represents more than entertainment. It has spoken for generations, and exemplified belief systems.
For your final paper assignment, you are to write a 4-5 page research essay (excluding APA title page, appendix, and bibliography) that addresses the following questions and contexts. In this paper, explore the relationship of music to each decade from the 1960s through 2000-2010. Your paper should discuss high profile events or movements that happened in each decade and for each decade pick a song that personifies or represents the primary “mood” of the decade. In the essay:
1. cite examples of how activism and social justice are exemplified through music
2. show how technology and social media influenced the listener’s reactions
The summary portion of the essay (perhaps at least 3/4 page of the entire essay) should draw connections between the decades and synthesize your findings. In unfolding the poem, address any literary devices you see: simile and metaphor, allusion, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, onomatopoeia, form, and other techniques (see Poetry.org). How do these all contribute to the overall message of the poem?

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
