1 Kings 9:10 And it came to pass at the end of twenty
years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the
house of the LORD, and the king's house, that then
king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land
of Galilee. 11 (Now Hiram the king of Tyre had
furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees,
and with gold, according to all his desire,)

Near the mid-point of Solomon’s reign (after 20 of
his 40 years), after he had finished building the
temple (7 years, 6:38) and his palace complex (13
years, 7:1), Solomon gave 20 villages in Galilee to
his old friend King Hiram... of Tyre. Hiram had
previously given Solomon cedar and pine (cf. 5:10)
and much gold as well. The amount of gold was
120 talents (9:14; ca. 9,000 pounds).

12 And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities
which Solomon had given him; and they pleased
him not. 13 And he said, What cities are these which
thou hast given me, my brother? And he called
them the land of Cabul unto this day. 14 And Hiram
sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.
But when Hiram visited the 20 towns... he was
disappointed; they were apparently located near
unproductive land. Hiram called them the Land of
Cabul (“Cabul” sounds like the Heb. for “good-for-
nothing”).

15 And this is the reason of the levy which king
Solomon raised; for to build the house of the
LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall
of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and
taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the
Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a
present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.

17 And Solomon built Gezer, and Bethhoron the
nether (lower Bethhoron), 18 And Baalath, and
Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land, 19 And all the
cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his
chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that
which Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and
in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.
Cities of store were where he kept surplus food.
He had other cities where he kept chariots, horses,
and horsemen for defense of Israel.
And still more just to occupy the land.

Solomon became
known as one of the
great builders in
Israel's history. He
built Hazor, Megiddo,
and Gezer as fortress
cities at key points
during his reign. He
also rebuilt the cities
of Lower Beth Horon,
Baalath, and Tadmor.

20 And all the people that were left of the Amorites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which
were not of the children of Israel, 21 Their children
that were left after them in the land, whom the
children of Israel also were not able utterly to
destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of
bond-service unto this day.
These were the slaves which did the hard work of
building all that Solomon built.

22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make
no bondmen: but they were men of war, and his
servants, and his princes, and his captains, and
rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.
The Israelites that he drafted were not slaves, but
had better jobs and were paid for their time.

11. 11
23 These were the chief of the officers that were
over Solomon's work, five hundred and fifty, which
bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

24 But Pharaoh's daughter came up out of the city of
David unto her house which Solomon had built for
her: then did he build Millo.
She moved into her own palace when it was
finished at the end of twenty years.
His number one wife had her own palace.

13. 13
25 And three times in a year did Solomon offer
burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar
which he built unto the LORD, and he burnt
incense upon the altar that was before the LORD.
So he finished the house.
The three annual occasions were perhaps the Feast
of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Harvest (also
called Weeks and Pentecost), and the Feast of
Tabernacles (also called Ingathering) since these
were the major feasts of Israel.

26 And King Solomon made a navy of ships in
Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of
the Red sea, in the land of Edom. 27 And Hiram
sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had
knowledge of the sea, with the servants of
Solomon. 28 And they came to Ophir, and fetched
from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents,
and brought it to king Solomon.
So, Solomon and King Hiram were still friends.
Hiram didn’t like the cities Solomon gave him, but
he liked to benefit from trade.

Solomon did well in building the house of
the Lord first of all his efforts.
God’s work needs to be first in our lives:
To do what we know God wants us to do.
The Bible teaches us what God
wants us to do.
As we do what we know, God
will further reveal things to us.

16. 16
1 Thessalonians 5:15 (KJV) See that none render evil
for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is
good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
No trying to get even with anyone.
Do only good things:
In the church,
To all men.

Galatians 6:10 (KJV) As we have therefore
opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially
unto them who are of the household of faith.

1 Thessalonians 5:16 (KJV) Rejoice evermore.
We can choose to be happy:
Whatever our circumstances,
All the time, in every place.
Rejoice because the Creator is our Father.
Rejoice because we are saved from sin and hell.
Rejoice because Jesus loves us.

18. 18
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV) Pray without ceasing.
Pray = worship and supplicate--to humbly ask God
for help for yourself or others.
Begin with worship, praising God for Who He is
and the things He has done.
He is our Creator, our Savior and Lord,
God is Healer of all our diseases,
Provider of all our needs, Protector, Comforter, a
very present Help in time of need.
Then ask.

19. 19
1 Thessalonians 5 18 In everything give thanks: for
this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus concerning
you. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not
prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that
which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of
evil.
This is not a complete list of all that God
would have us to do.
But it’s a good place to start.
