• Grown over years.
• 2013 Appointment of Prof David Bruhn (support of DAP,
industry, alumni)
• 2018 Geothermal theme
TU Delft Geothermal
A hot topic, for deep research
6
Internal: Department / TU
• Coordination of activities
• Applying expertise to application area
• Better research
• Better education
External: industry / society
• A single way into the research
• Communicating research output effectively
• Communicating with industry effectively
• A way of demonstrating expertise depth
• Tackling more general questions

‘We have the vision that TU Delft will become a knowledge centre and a
global player for Geothermal research and development. We will utilise
our expertise and skills to grow a substantial research and educational theme on
Geothermal Energy within the Department of Geoscience and Engineering
(GSE).
We commit to considerably expanding our research infrastructure and
capabilities to deliver this vision. The geothermal doublet on campus (DAPwell)
will be a unique and integral part of the geothermal research infrastructure. It
will add a critical component to the current engagement of TU Delft within the
energy transition (e.g. wind, solar, smart grids), as heat makes up ~80% of the
energy use in the urban environment.
’

Embedding in existing programmes
• AES BSc (new introduction courses)
• AES LDE minor in Georesources (new 2017)
• Petroleum MSc track
• Currently in 1 course, 2 electives (incl. a field trip)
• Proposed replacement track: Geo-energy. 2
courses
• 4TU SET MSc
• 1 course
• MSc and BSc theses
Focus now on robust embedding – not a new programme/track.
Education
11
A team approach: Opportunities
• Deep geothermal
• Monitoring
• Prediction and self learning
• Variability
• Aquifer Thermal Energy Systems (ATES)
• As above
• Increasing temperatures
• Increasing efficiencies
• Shallow geothermal
• As above
• Integration with structures
• Integration with electrical grid
• Low risk design
• System and heat networks
• Planning and scheduling
• Integration with buildings
• Long term monitoring
• Data assimilation
Opportunities: research/valorisation
A hot topic, for deep research
12
A team approach: Facilities
• Delft Aardwarmte Project well (DAPwell) Project to develop
a geothermal well on campus, offering a chance to trial new
technology and monitoring. Can be a European test bed.
• Delft thermal grid. Existing heat grid on campus, possibility to
test prediction, storage and planning.
• Energy pile. A 10m deep energy pile at the Green Village to test
thermo-mechanical behaviour.
• Thermal laboratory. A number of experimental facilities exist
and will be further developed, to have thermal control and
thermal loading. Combined with partners.
Facilities

Risks
A hot topic, for deep research
14
• ~2km deep well – into the Delft sandstone.
• Collaborations:
• Internal university (department, faculty, facility
management)
• Partners outside (universities, companies, organisations)
• Provide substantial heat to TU campus and surroundings
• Large-scale research infrastructure
• Reference well – extremely well instrumented during
installation and operation
• Allowing measurement campaigns during measurement.
Proposed campus Geothermal Well
(DAPwell)
15
• Large-scale research infrastructure
• Partial financing in place
• SDE+ approved
• Project team appointment to make project plans:
• Project manager to perform overall project management
and establish the necessary legal entities (Warmte BV,
etc.)
• Well designer for the detailed well engineering design
and alignment of scientific and operational requirements
• Final university decision pending
• Distribution of heat
• Negotiations with new partners look promising

  • 5. 5 • 2007 Started with a group of students and a good idea. • Grown over years. • 2013 Appointment of Prof David Bruhn (support of DAP, industry, alumni) • 2018 Geothermal theme TU Delft Geothermal A hot topic, for deep research
  • 6. 6 Internal: Department / TU • Coordination of activities • Applying expertise to application area • Better research • Better education External: industry / society • A single way into the research • Communicating research output effectively • Communicating with industry effectively • A way of demonstrating expertise depth • Tackling more general questions TU Delft Geothermal Theme A hot topic, for deep research
  • 8. 8 ‘We have the vision that TU Delft will become a knowledge centre and a global player for Geothermal research and development. We will utilise our expertise and skills to grow a substantial research and educational theme on Geothermal Energy within the Department of Geoscience and Engineering (GSE). We commit to considerably expanding our research infrastructure and capabilities to deliver this vision. The geothermal doublet on campus (DAPwell) will be a unique and integral part of the geothermal research infrastructure. It will add a critical component to the current engagement of TU Delft within the energy transition (e.g. wind, solar, smart grids), as heat makes up ~80% of the energy use in the urban environment. ’ Vision A hot topic, for deep research

  • 10. 10 Embedding in existing programmes • AES BSc (new introduction courses) • AES LDE minor in Georesources (new 2017) • Petroleum MSc track • Currently in 1 course, 2 electives (incl. a field trip) • Proposed replacement track: Geo-energy. 2 courses • 4TU SET MSc • 1 course • MSc and BSc theses Focus now on robust embedding – not a new programme/track. Education
  • 11. 11 A team approach: Opportunities • Deep geothermal • Monitoring • Prediction and self learning • Variability • Aquifer Thermal Energy Systems (ATES) • As above • Increasing temperatures • Increasing efficiencies • Shallow geothermal • As above • Integration with structures • Integration with electrical grid • Low risk design • System and heat networks • Planning and scheduling • Integration with buildings • Long term monitoring • Data assimilation Opportunities: research/valorisation A hot topic, for deep research
  • 12. 12 A team approach: Facilities • Delft Aardwarmte Project well (DAPwell) Project to develop a geothermal well on campus, offering a chance to trial new technology and monitoring. Can be a European test bed. • Delft thermal grid. Existing heat grid on campus, possibility to test prediction, storage and planning. • Energy pile. A 10m deep energy pile at the Green Village to test thermo-mechanical behaviour. • Thermal laboratory. A number of experimental facilities exist and will be further developed, to have thermal control and thermal loading. Combined with partners. Facilities A hot topic, for deep research
  • 13. 13 Risks A hot topic, for deep research
  • 14. 14 • ~2km deep well – into the Delft sandstone. • Collaborations: • Internal university (department, faculty, facility management) • Partners outside (universities, companies, organisations) • Provide substantial heat to TU campus and surroundings • Large-scale research infrastructure • Reference well – extremely well instrumented during installation and operation • Allowing measurement campaigns during measurement. Proposed campus Geothermal Well (DAPwell)
  • 15. 15 • Large-scale research infrastructure • Partial financing in place • SDE+ approved • Project team appointment to make project plans: • Project manager to perform overall project management and establish the necessary legal entities (Warmte BV, etc.) • Well designer for the detailed well engineering design and alignment of scientific and operational requirements • Final university decision pending • Distribution of heat • Negotiations with new partners look promising Status of DAPwell
