1. Initial response to
the brief
“Trauma”

2. INSPIRATION
• I have always enjoyed watching the captivating title sequences from such as “Looper” and
“Walter Mitty” as they were both really well filmed or/and emotionally evoking. So when
given the task to create a title sequence, my first thought out of this was, what do I want
to gain out of this? Simply put, I want to evoke an emotional response out of my audience.
Possibly something with philosophical connotations too. This means that I do not want to
simply copy some cliché blood and guts superhero film or horror, the story line needs
careful consideration and therefore possibly be a little bit controversial that challenges
mainstream ideologies. So I think that a drama would be great for this.
• I'm going to include elements from “Walter Mitty” and “Looper,” I like how Looper ends
on an enigma, it makes us think everything is normal and then whisks away our
expectations a second before the title strikes, this offers interlectual pleasures to my more
sophisticated audience. And I like the variety of shots in Mitty, the use of focus and the
clever use of editing and story. Mitty and looper are full of content, so they have an equal
balance of substance and style, what makes them clever is the use of weird shots, bu that
I mean in “mitty” there is one shot where he walks out of focus, stays there, and then
returns back to the focus. Its clever and just gives the audience more to think about as we
question what connotations it may hold.

3. The idea
In brief, this is my idea:
Soft piano music plays and a man wakes up in a field, it may be an extremely
beautiful field (Must explore MATTE painting to see if possible) he stands up
confused and looks around in awe, after a minute of this he looks down to see blood
on his tshirt, (slowly spreading if possible, must research) he looks around panicked,
and then lurches forward and onto a busy street, back in the real world. Beside him
is his daughter being dragged away by a mugger and he is on the floor lying in a pool
of blood. Slowly a non digetic heartbeat fades up and as his daughter is dragged
away, as she goes the heartbeat sound slows down until we get the sound of a heart
machine flat lining, during that moment the title comes up. ”trauma”.
The rest of the film will be spent either finding his daughter or coming to terms with
her loss and trying to get back to that magical place he went when close to death.

4. The Genre and Audience
I think that drama is all about enticing a response, it often has clear
representations or implies some sort of message, typically being controversial,
and thus the plot of the film is more complex.
So therefore I know that my audience have to be the more sophisticated A-B
audience, so they can comprehend and understand the intended reading from
my film. I think that my film will be taking a route through the “is heaven real?”
area and possibly exploring suicide or personal loss in some extent. Because of
the more violent aspect to my piece, I will be targeting the 18+ audience, and
due to the fact that it will possibly be very brutal I will target those younger
than 45, as I think It will be a bit too close to the knuckle, which adds counter
cultural attraction and catharsis through violence.
In terms of race, gender and sexuality, I will target males, as this film will give
personal identity to males as the piece is a father failing to be masculine enough
and save his daughter. Sexuality and race will not play much in the audience as I
want to target as much of the audience as possible due it being an independent
film. However my choice of actor will of course affect this.
