Generational poverty is evident in 14.8% of West Virginians and over 50% of students in a small Appalachian town school. Children in generational poverty have different values than middle class children and view time, possessions, love, and destiny differently. Their hidden rules include resolving conflicts through fighting, having a local focus, living in the moment to meet immediate needs, and believing fate determines life outcomes. Teachers must understand these hidden rules to effectively teach students in generational poverty.
