Children with Teen Parents
Children born to teen parents face increased risks such as premature birth, low birth weight, developmental problems, abuse and neglect, and cognitive issues. Teen pregnancy rates have declined but still occur frequently. The children of teen parents are more likely to drop out of high school and repeat the cycle of teen pregnancy. Teachers can help by creating a supportive classroom environment, communicating with parents, and not making assumptions about students' abilities based on their parents' age.

- 1. Orchard Primary School Young Carer’s Day 26th January 2017 D Lyman.
- 2. Who are young carers? A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps looks after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses substances such as drugs or alcohol.
- 3. Which one is a young carer? Young carer’s are just young people with caring responsibilities. They look the same as everyone else but can lead very different lives.
- 4. Some things a young carer might do. • Practical tasks such as cooking housework and shopping. • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed. • Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed. • Personal care, such as helping someone dress. • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions. • Helping to give medicine. • Helping someone communicate. • Looking after brothers and sisters.

- 6. Fact’s about young carers • 1 in 3 young carers spend between 11-20 hours each week caring. • The average age of a young carer = 13
- 7. How many young carer’s are there? • There are about 700,000 young carers in the UK. ( BBC 2010) • That’s about 1 in 12 secondary aged pupils but we also know that there are young carer’s in primary schools, so these numbers are most probably much higher. • There are likely to be young carers in every school and college.

Being a young carer can have a big impact on the things that are important to growing up. • It can affect a young person’s health, social life and self confidence. • Many young carer’s struggle to juggle their education and caring which can cause pressure and stress. • In a survey, 39% said that nobody in their school was aware of their caring role. • 26% have been bullied at school because of their caring role • 1-20 miss time at school because of their caring role. But young people can learn lots of useful skills being a young carer.

- 10. What do young carers need? • The time to be a young person. • The same opportunities as their friends. • Good support for the person they help look after. • Their rights acknowledged so that they can discuss their needs for support.
- 11. Support for young carers. • If you think you are a young carer and would like to talk, you can speak to a member of staff in school in confidence. They can help you find the support you need. • Bexley Moorings support young carers between the ages of 10- 15 years, with a range of activities such as befrienders and support groups. Poem by a young carer We Stand like mountains Mountains stand tall They never, ever fall Young Carers stand small on the land We're people's defender We never surrender It just goes to show However many blows That we suffer We'll prove tougher The cared for person is like the sun, their rays affect all those about them on a daily basis. On good days their achievements are marvelled at and on bad days they are supported by all around them. They are seen and their influence is always felt. I am like the moon, I am not seen unless you look for me, I affect so many things but they often go unnoticed.. I am awake at night and out shone in the day.
