1 Introduction
1.1 Target group
This documentation is aimed at users with the following knowledge and skills:
 Advanced knowledge of the robot controller system
 Advanced knowledge of networks
1.2 Industrial robot documentation
The industrial robot documentation consists of the following parts:

Each of these sets of instructions is a separate document.

Ethernet interface of the robot controller for real-time
communication to and from the outside world
 The KLI is a physical interface and can contain
multiple virtual interfaces.

projects between the robot controller and

communication to and from the outside world

2 Product description
2.1 Overview of KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0
Description The KONI (KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface) is a physical interface of the ro-
bot controller for non-real-time communication to and from the outside world.
It is suitable, for example, for creating or loading backups. The physical KONI
is deactivated as standard.
The software package KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface is required for activat-
ing and configuring the physical interface:
 Activation: It is activated by installing the software.
 Configuration: The KONI tab is available for this in the Network configu-
ration window following installation.
Limitations KUKA.VisionTech:
 If KUKA.VisionTech is installed, KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0 can-
not be installed.
 If KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0 is installed, KUKA.VisionTech can-
not be installed.
Modifications on
the controller
Update of KSS/VSS:
 In the case of an update, the activation status and the configuration of the
KONI are retained.
Exchange of the hard drive:
 If the hard drive is exchanged, the configuration of the KONI is lost. The
KONI must be reconfigured.
2.2 Intended use
Use KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0 may only be installed on a robot control-
ler that meets the specified system requirements.
KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0 is intended exclusively for activating and
configuring the physical KONI interface.
Misuse Any use or application deviating from the intended use is deemed to be misuse
and is not allowed. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for any damage re-
sulting from such use. The risk lies entirely with the user.

Older versions of KUKA.VisionTech may constitute an
exception. It may be possible to install such versions.
It is only permissible for one of the two packages to be installed, however.
KUKA.VisionTech cannot be operated together with KUKA.OptionalNet-
workInterface 1.0 on the same robot controller.

3 Installation
3 Installation
3.1 System requirements
Hardware  KR C4 robot controller with motherboard with KONI interface
Software  KUKA System Software 8.3
Or VW System Software 8.3
 KUKA.VisionTech is not installed on the robot controller.
3.2 Installing KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0
Precondition  User group “Expert”
 T1 or T2 mode
 No program is selected.
 USB stick with the software to be installed
 ZIP files must be unzipped.
 There must be no other files in the directory in which the individual files
are located.
Procedure 1. Connect the USB stick to the robot controller or smartPAD.
2. In the main menu, select Start-up > Additional software.
3. Press New software: The entry OptionalNetworkInterface must be dis-
played in the Name column and drive E: or K: in the Path column.
If not, press Refresh.
4. If the specified entries are now displayed, continue with step 5.
Otherwise, the path from which the software is to be installed must be con-
figured first:
a. Press the Configure button.
b. Select a line in the Installation paths for options area.
Note: If the line already contains a path, this path will be overwritten.
c. Press Path selection. The available drives are displayed.
d. If the stick is connected to the robot controller: On E:, select the direc-
tory in which the software is located.
If the stick is connected to the smartPAD: K: instead of E:
e. Press Save. The Installation paths for options area is displayed
again. It now contains the new path.
f. Mark the line with the new path and press Save again.
5. Select the entry OptionalNetworkInterface and press Install. Answer the
request for confirmation with Yes.
6. Confirm the reboot prompt with OK.
7. Remove the stick.

The robot controller documentation specifies whether the mother-
board has a KONI interface.
It is advisable to archive all relevant data before updating a software
package.
We recommend using a KUKA USB stick. Data may be
lost if a stick from a different manufacturer is used.

8. Press the Restart button.
LOG file A LOG file is created under C:KRCROBOTERLOG.
3.3 Uninstalling KUKA.OptionalNetworkInterface 1.0
 Operating mode T1, T2
Procedure 1. In the main menu, select Start-up > Additional software.
2. Select the entry OptionalNetworkInterface and press Uninstall. Answer
the request for confirmation with Yes. Uninstallation is prepared.
3. Reboot the robot controller. Uninstallation is resumed and completed.
LOG file A LOG file is created under C:KRCROBOTERLOG.
It is advisable to archive all relevant data before uninstalling a soft-
ware package.

4.1 Configuring the Windows interface
Description The Windows interface is the virtual interface of the KONI. It has a preconfig-
ured static IP address:
 IP address: 192.168.1.10
 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
These values can be modified by the user. If required, it is also possible to
switch to dynamic address assignment. Similarly, it is also possible to switch
back from a dynamic address to a static address.
Precondition  If the address type Dynamic IP address is to be selected: There is a
DHCP server present in the network.
 User group “Expert”
 T1 or T2 mode
Procedure 1. In the main menu, select Start-up > Network configuration. The Net-
work configuration window opens.
2. Select the KONI tab. The active Windows interface is displayed. (Default:
“virtual20”)
3. Select the desired type in the Address type: box: Dynamic IP address
or Fixed IP address
4. Only for Dynamic IP address:
The boxes IP address: and Subnet mask: are deactivated, as the values
are automatically assigned by the DHCP server.
5. Only for Fixed IP address: Fill out the following boxes:
 IP address: Enter the IP address of the robot controller.
 Subnet mask:: The selected subnet mask must match the IP network.
6. Press Save.
7. Reboot the robot controller so that the change takes effect.

The following address ranges are used by default by the robot con-
troller for internal purposes. IP addresses from this range cannot
therefore be assigned by the user via the smartHMI. The system in-
dicates an error.
 169.254.0.0 … 169.254.255.255
 172.16.0.0 … 172.16.255.255
 172.17.0.0 … 172.17.255.255
 192.168.0.0 … 192.168.0.255
If the address type Dynamic IP address is set for both the KLI and
the KONI: The standard gateway most recently received from a
DHCP server is applied. The same applies to additional information,
such as DNS server and domain name.
The other types in this box (e.g. Real-time IP address) must not be
selected.

4.2 Displaying or modifying filters
 T1 or T2 mode
2. Select the KONI tab.
3. Press Advanced.... The window for advanced network configuration
opens.
4. Select the User-defined filters tab.
5. If modifications are required: Carry these out and press Save.
6. Close the Network configuration window using the Close icon.
7. If modifications have been made: Reboot the robot controller with the set-
ting Reload files.
4.3 Displaying ports of the Windows interface or enabling an additional port

It is not generally necessary to modify the filters. If this is nevertheless
to be done, KUKA Roboter GmbH must be contacted beforehand.

3. Press Advanced.... The window for advanced network configuration
opens.
4. Select the NAT tab. A list of all the enabled ports of the Windows interface
is displayed in the Available ports: area.
5. If a port is to be enabled:
a. Press Add port. A new port with the number “0” is added to the list.
b. Complete the boxes Port number: and Permitted protocols:.
c. Press Save.
A maximum total of 40 ports can be enabled.
6. Close the Network configuration window using the Close icon.
7. If modifications have been made: Reboot the robot controller with the set-
ting Reload files.
4.4 Error display in the Address and Subnet boxes
Description The Address and Subnet boxes may be displayed with a red frame. This indi-
cates an error and may have the following causes:
Example Example of an entry that is not system-compliant:
In the binary display, subnet masks may only contain closed groups of leading
ones.
 The subnet mask “255.255.208.0” is entered.
The ports enabled by KUKA by default must not be re-
moved. Doing so may result in the loss of functions of the
robot controller.
Cause Possible remedy
The entry does not conform to the
IP system.
Example: The number ranges of the
IP address and subnet do not
match.
Check the box with the red frame
and correct it.
The red frame disappears.
This address is already used in one
of the internal subnets.
In this case, both the address and
the corresponding box on the Inter-
nal subnets tab are displayed with
a red frame.
 Change the actual address.
 Or, only after consultation with
KUKA: change the address of
the internal subnet.
The red frame disappears.
The subnet configuration of the robot controller may be
modified only in consultation with KUKA Roboter GmbH.
Modifications carried out without consultation may result in the loss of func-
tions of the robot controller.

 The box is now displayed with a red frame.
Reason: the binary representation of “208” corresponds to “11010000”
and is thus not a valid entry.
 Possible remedy: Enter 255.255.240.0.
The binary representation of “240” corresponds to “11110000” and is thus
a valid entry.

5.1 Requesting support
Introduction This documentation provides information on operation and operator control,
and provides assistance with troubleshooting. For further assistance, please
contact your local KUKA subsidiary.
Information The following information is required for processing a support request:
 Description of the problem, including information about the duration and
frequency of the fault
 As comprehensive information as possible about the hardware and soft-
ware components of the overall system
The following list gives an indication of the information which is relevant in
many cases:
 Model and serial number of the kinematic system, e.g. the manipulator
 Model and serial number of the controller
 Model and serial number of the energy supply system
 Designation and version of the system software
 Designations and versions of other software components or modifica-
tions
 Diagnostic package KRCDiag
Additionally for KUKA Sunrise: Existing projects including applications
For versions of KUKA System Software older than V8: Archive of the
software (KRCDiag is not yet available here.)
