The document discusses how the church in Corinth had lost its focus on Christ and instead became divided and immersed in immorality and idolatry. It asserts that all the church's problems stemmed from taking their eyes off of Christ. It then provides suggestions for how to refocus on Christ by making Him the central focus of the local church, evangelism, and individual Christians' lives rather than other people or activities. Members are encouraged to imitate and glorify Christ above all else.
2. The Core Problem
1. The Divisions 1-4
2. The Immorality 5-6
3. The participating in Idolatry 8-10
4. The neglect of the Lord’s Supper 11
5. The misuse of their Spiritual Gifts 14
All problems lead back to the core problem
Christ was no longer the focus of their local
church, their work, or in their lives
3. Putting Christ back in the Local Church
• Do not be grounded to brethren, but be grounded to
Christ
• 1 Cor. 1:12-13, 3:21-23
• Do not glorify the local church, instead glorify Christ
• Because our glorying can “not be good.” 1 Cor. 5:2, 6
• 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we
ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in
the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Eph. 3:20-21
• Are you going to be interested in the local church or the
activities in church without Christ?
• 1 Cor. 1:22-24,30-31
• Those that appreciate Christ are going to appreciate worshiping Christ
4. Putting Christ back into Evangelism
• We must be about converting people to Christ, to
God
• We do not convert people to the Gardendale church of Christ
• We do not convert people to my “way of life”
• We do not convert people to our group of friendships
• 1 Cor. 14:23-25
• Evangelism is not about me, it is about Christ saving
others
• 1 Cor. 3:5-7, 11
5. Putting Christ back into the Christian
• 1 Cor. 1:2 - To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are
sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every
place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
• 1 Cor. 1:30 - But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us
wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption—
• 1 Cor. 6:15 - Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a
harlot? Certainly not!
• 1 Cor. 8:5-7 - 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or
on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), 6 yet for us there
is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and
one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through
whom we live.
6. Putting Christ back into the Christian
• 1 Cor. 8:11-12 - And because of your knowledge shall the weak
brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when you thus sin
against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin
against Christ.
• 1 Cor. 11:1 - Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
• 1 Cor. 12:12 - For as the body is one and has many members, but
all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so
also is Christ
• 1 Cor. 15:22-23 - For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall
be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the first
fruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.
• 1 Cor. 15:57 - But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
