Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks:100
Note: 1. Answer any FIVE full questions, selecting
atleast TWO question from each part.
2. Use of IS : 1905 – 1987 is permitted.
3. Assume any suitably missing data.
1
PART - A
a. Explain the concept of alternative building materials. (05 Marks)
b. Explain different categories of energy consumption in a building, with examples. (05 Marks)
c. Explain environmental issues related to building materials. (10 Marks)
2 a. Explain the concept and manufacturing process of SMB. (10 Marks)
b. Explain the concept and manufacturing process of Fal – G blocks. (10 Marks)
3 a. Enlist the applications of FRC in construction industry. (05 Marks)
b. Explain Dry and wet process of blending of lime and pozzolana. (05 Marks)
c. List the industrial waste which are used as alternative building materials, explain their uses.
(10 Marks)
4 a. Explain cavity wall, with a neat sketch. (05 Marks)
b. Explain different varieties of cementations materials used for masonry mortars. (05 Marks)
c. Explain the following : i) Filler slab roofs ii) Composite Beam and panel roofs.
(10 Marks)

PART - B
a. Derive the equations for lateral stresses in brick and mortar when i) Eb > Em ii) Eb < Em.
(10 Marks)
b. A brick masonry prism is made up of 5 bricks joined by a mortar joint of 2cm thick. The
brick is 10cm in thickness. The prism is subjected to a uniform vertical stress of 5N/mm2
.
Take Eb = 600MPa and Em = 7000MPa. Determine the Horizontal lateral stress in brick and
mortar. Assume the Poisson’s ratio of brick and mortar = 0.15. (10 Marks)
6 a. Design an interior wall of a two storeyed building with RCC slabs of effective span 2.65m.
The wall is 3.6m long and is stiffened at the ends by 230mm thick intersecting walls, the
ceiling height of each floor is 3m. The size of the masonry unit is
230mm × 105mm × 75mm. (10 Marks)
b. Design an interior wall of a two – storeyed wall carrying concrete slabs with a storey height
of 3m. The wall is stiffned by 100mm thick intersecting walls at 3.6m c/c, also the wall has
a door opening of size 0.9m × 2.0m at a distance of 200mm from one of the intersecting
walls. Consider loadings as follows :
i) Roof loading = 15kN/m ii) Floor loading = 12.5kN/m. (10 Marks)
7 a. Explain cost effective techniques in planning and construction of buildings briefly.
(10 Marks)
b. Explain the application of cost effective construction technologies. (10 Marks)
8 Write short notes on :
a. Ferrocement b. Energy in building materials.
c. Integral roofing d. Tests on mortar. (20 Marks)
