This document outlines both the ISTE standards for teachers and students regarding technology use. For teachers, there are 5 standards: 1) facilitate student learning, 2) design digital learning experiences, 3) model digital work and learning, 4) promote digital citizenship, and 5) engage in professional growth. The standards for students include being empowered learners, digital citizens, knowledge constructors, innovative designers, computational thinkers, creative communicators, and global collaborators. Examples are given for how teachers can implement the standards and how students can demonstrate them.

2. ISTE TECHNOLOGY
STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS
ISTE stands for International Society for Technology in Education. ISTE was formally
known as NETS or National Education Technology Standards. ISTE has said that
there are five performance indicators for teachers who are following ISTE standards.
1) Facilitate and inspire student learning and
creativity.
2) Design and develop digital age learning
experiences and assessments.
3) Model digital age work and learning
4) Promote and model digital citizenship and
responsibility.
5) Engage in professional growth and leadership.

Teachers should be able to demonstrate fluency with technology.
Teachers should also be able to communicate with students and
members of the community using digital tools and resources, as well as
being able to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively
to students and peers using a variety of digital devices.

6. PROMOTE DIGITAL
CITIZENSHIP AND
RESPONSIBILITY
Teachers must advocate, model, and teach
ethical use of digital information and
technology.
Teachers should also address the learning
needs of a diverse group of students while
providing access to approbate digital age tools
and resources.
Lastly teaches should model digital etiquette
and responsibility with social interactions
when using technology, as well as modeling
futures understanding by engaging with
colleagues and students of other cultures
through digital age media.

DESIGNERStudents use a variety of technologies within a design
process to identify and solve problems by creating new,

13. COMPUTATIONAL

Microsoft Excel uses algorithms that can do any number of things, such as
calculating the total of a row of numbers. Through this students are able to
learn what algorithms are and how they work as well as come up with some
of their own.

COMMUNICATOR
Students communicate

Students are able to use video chat or text translators to communicate
with students from other places all over the world. This is a great first
hand lesson in the different cultures and ways of living.
