This document summarizes a study that analyzed the CCR5 gene from 50 individuals in Northeastern Ohio. The study examined the prevalence of a Δ32 mutation in the CCR5 gene, which results in the absence of the CCR5 co-receptor and less susceptibility to HIV transmission. The Δ32 mutation is more common in Caucasian populations. DNA was extracted from cheek swabs of students and teachers and analyzed through PCR and gel electrophoresis. The results showed that 10% of individuals carried the heterozygous Δ32 deletion mutation.
