Living creatures share several key characteristics - they are organized at multiple levels from molecules to cells to tissues and organs; they are able to respond to internal and external changes through homeostasis and reaction to stimuli; they require energy, which they generate through metabolism and cellular respiration; they grow and develop over their lifetimes; and they reproduce offspring of their own kind.
