 The rim is the outer edge of a wheel, holding the tire It 
makes up the outer circular design of the wheel on 
which the inside edge of the tire is mounted on 
vehicles such as automobiles. 
 In the 1st millennium BC an iron rim was introduced 
around the wooden wheels of chariots.
Consists of three parts 
 Wheel base 
 Rim 
 spokes
Aluminium alloys and steel 
 Aluminium has better qualities than steel like 
 Strength 
Heat resistance 
 Better breaking system 
 But cost is higher than steel
• Forging 
• Casting 
 Forging has more advantages when compared to 
casting 
 Forged rims can bear heavy load 
 Forged wheels are free from pores and cavities 
 Forged rims have better mechanical properties
 Follows 6 steps 
 1.making wheel disks 
 2.making wheel rim 
 3.assembling disks into rim 
 4.finishing
 initially pressures applied flat disk 
by some series of 
presses 
 first press gives the center of disk 
 For 1 inch 16 gauge steel 5 tons of 
Pressure is required
 The windows are cut in disk by 
second pressing on the rim 
Windows give good look and 
Strengthen the disk 
 By third pressing the disk is 
made into bowl shape and has 
particular angles for particular designs 
Holes are made around center disk 
to mount it on vehicle
 The sheet metal is rolled 
 by cold rolling process to remove 
 excess material 
 Then sheet is rolled into circular ring and 
egdes are joined by welding 
 The excess welding wastes are 
scratched out
 The rim is forged into curved shapes 
by using high pressures 
 Then the rim is shaped by a series of 
rollers to provide the rim a bead seat 
to hold the bead wall of tire
 The rim and disk both are allowed to finishing 
 Finishing gives a plain smooth view of rim and disk
 The disk is placed in rim and a high pressure is applied 
on disk to get fit into rim 
 Then the contact of both are welded together
 It may be carried out by automated machines or by 
manual 
 In automation the laser detects the flaws 
 In manual a marking block is used to check the perfect 
spherical shape rim
 There is a wide range of applications for wheel rims 
especially in automobiles,they are heart of automobile 
industry 
 Instead of rims it is impossible to have great grip on 
wheels and braking systems 
 Even bicycles , motor cycles have rims as per the size 
and shape of design 
 Rails run on rail road on these rims which are more 
stronger than actual rims

  • 3.  The rim is the outer edge of a wheel, holding the tire It makes up the outer circular design of the wheel on which the inside edge of the tire is mounted on vehicles such as automobiles.  In the 1st millennium BC an iron rim was introduced around the wooden wheels of chariots.

  • 5. Aluminium alloys and steel  Aluminium has better qualities than steel like  Strength Heat resistance  Better breaking system  But cost is higher than steel
  • 6. • Forging • Casting  Forging has more advantages when compared to casting  Forged rims can bear heavy load  Forged wheels are free from pores and cavities  Forged rims have better mechanical properties
  • 7.  Follows 6 steps  1.making wheel disks  2.making wheel rim  3.assembling disks into rim  4.finishing
  • 8.  initially pressures applied flat disk by some series of presses  first press gives the center of disk  For 1 inch 16 gauge steel 5 tons of Pressure is required
  • 9.  The windows are cut in disk by second pressing on the rim Windows give good look and Strengthen the disk  By third pressing the disk is made into bowl shape and has particular angles for particular designs Holes are made around center disk to mount it on vehicle
  • 10.  The sheet metal is rolled  by cold rolling process to remove  excess material  Then sheet is rolled into circular ring and egdes are joined by welding  The excess welding wastes are scratched out
  • 11.  The rim is forged into curved shapes by using high pressures  Then the rim is shaped by a series of rollers to provide the rim a bead seat to hold the bead wall of tire
  • 12.  The rim and disk both are allowed to finishing  Finishing gives a plain smooth view of rim and disk
  • 13.  The disk is placed in rim and a high pressure is applied on disk to get fit into rim  Then the contact of both are welded together

  • 15.  It may be carried out by automated machines or by manual  In automation the laser detects the flaws  In manual a marking block is used to check the perfect spherical shape rim
  • 16.  There is a wide range of applications for wheel rims especially in automobiles,they are heart of automobile industry  Instead of rims it is impossible to have great grip on wheels and braking systems  Even bicycles , motor cycles have rims as per the size and shape of design  Rails run on rail road on these rims which are more stronger than actual rims
