Matter can exist in three main forms - solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have a fixed shape and size, liquids flow freely but take the shape of their container, and gases spread out to fill any space. All matter, regardless of form, has mass and occupies space. In daily life, we rely on solids for food, shelter, and clothing, liquids like water are essential for survival, and gases like air are required for breathing.
3. • There are variety of things around us.
• They differ in their size, shape, color and other properties.
4. MASS
• All objects have mass.
• MASS is the quantity that tells us how heavy or light an
object is.
• For example:
Eraser, sharpener and scale are light in weight.
Book, bag and water bottle are heavy.
5.
6.
7. SPACE
• All objects occupy space.
• For example clothes occupy space in the cup board,
books occupy space on the table and you occupy space
on the chair.
8.
9. MATTER
• Anything that has mass and occupies space is called
matter.
• It includes both living and non- living things.
• Everything around us is a matter.
13. PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS
• They have a fixed shape and size.
• The shape or size of a solid can only be changed when it
is broken or cut by applying force.
• Solid substances do not flow.
14.
15. ACTIVITY: CLASSIFY THE FOLLOWING
INTO HARD AND SOFT SOLIDS
• TABLE
• CLOTHES
• PLASTIC BOTTLE
• CHAIR
• PENCIL
• FLOWER
• PEN
• WOOL
• FLOOR
• GLASS BOTTLE
• PAPER
16. •Hard solids cannot be bent or scratched easily.
•The shape of hard solid does not change when
pressed hard or when moved from one place to
another.
17.
18. PROPERTIES OF LIQUIDS
• Liquids do not have a fixed shape. They take the shape of
the container in which they are poured.
• Liquids flow easily.
19. • A liquid can be poured and spilled while a solid cannot.
• Some examples of liquid are water, milk, fruit juice and oil.
22. PROPERTIES OF GASES
• Gases do not have a fixed shape or size.
• Gases spread and fill all the space available to them in a closed
container.
23. • Most gases are colorless and cannot be seen. They are
present all around us in the air.
• The oxygen we breathe in and the carbon dioxide we
breath out are some examples of gases.
24.
25. USES OF MATTER IN OUR DAILY LIFE
SOLIDS
• THE FOOD WE EAT
• HOUSE WHERE WE LIVE
• CLOTHES THAT WE WEAR
• THINGS THAT WE USE TO BUILD
OUR HOUSE.
26. LIQUIDS
• WATER IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SURVIVAL OF LIVING THINGS.
• WE NEED WATER FOR DRINKING, BATHING, CLEANING, COOKING AND WATERING
PLANTS.
• WE USE OIL, MILK, TEA AND COFFEE AND FRUIT JUICES REGULARLY.
27. GASES
• AIR IS A MIXTURE OF GASES. GASES ARE INVISIBLE BUT ESSENTIAL FOR US.
• GASES ARE REQUIRED FOR BREATHING.
• WE FILL BALLOONS, TYRES AND FOOTBALLS WITH GAS.
• GAS IS USED FOR COOKING.
• WE USE CNG AS FUEL IN OUR VEHICLES.
