MATTER
 Everything in this universe is made up of material which scientists have named “matter”.
 Matter can be defined as anything which occupies space and have mass.
 Examples:
 The air we breathe, the food we eat,
 stones, clouds, stars,
 plants and animals,
 even a small drop of water or a particle of sand.
PHYSICAL NATURE OF MATTER.
 Matter is made up of particles.
 Particles can be regarded as the smallest unit of matter.
 They are very small.
 Particles of matter have space between them.
 Particles of matter are continuously moving.
 Particles of matter attract each other.
STATES OF MATTER
• There exists three different states of matter- solid, liquid and gas.
• These states of matter arise due to the variation in the characteristics of the
particles of matter.
THE SOLID STATE
 Solids have a definite shape, distinct boundaries and fixed volumes, that is, have negligible
compressibility.
 Solids have a tendency to maintain their shape when subjected to outside force.
 Solids may break under force but it is difficult to change their shape, so they are rigid.
Examples: Rubber band, sugar, sponge etc.
THE LIQUID STATE
 Liquids have no fixed shape but have a fixed volume.
 They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept.
 Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not rigid but can be called fluid.
THE GASEOUS STATE
 Gases are highly compressible as compared to solids and liquids.
 In the gaseous state, the particles move about randomly at high speed.
 Due to this random movement, the particles hit each other and also the walls of the
container.
 The pressure exerted by the gas is because of this force exerted by gas particles per
unit area on the walls of the container.
CHANGE OF STATES OF MATTER
 Can matter change its states???
yes, they do.
 Example: water
• solid, as ice,
• liquid, as the familiar water, and
• gas, as water vapour.
EFFECT OF CHANGE OF TEMPERATURE
 On increasing the temperature of solids, the kinetic energy of the particles
increases.
 Due to the increase in kinetic energy, the particles start vibrating with greater
speed.
 The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of attraction between the
particles.
 The particles leave their fixed positions and start moving more freely.
 A stage is reached when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid.
 The temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at the atmospheric
pressure is called its melting point.
 The amount of heat energy that is required to change 1 kg of a solid into liquid at
atmospheric pressure at its melting point is known as the latent heat of fusion.
 The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling at the atmospheric pressure is
known as its boiling point.
SUBLIMATION
 A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state or
vice versa is called sublimation.
EFFECT OF CHANGE IN PRESSURE
 The difference in various states of matter is due to the difference in the distances
between the constituent particles.
 Applying pressure and reducing temperature can liquefy gases.
EVAPORATION
 The phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapours at any temperature below
its boiling point is called evaporation.
FACTORS AFFECTING EVAPORATION
Surface area.
Temperature
Humidity
Wind speed.
EVAPORATION CAUSES COOLING.
 In an open vessel, the liquid keeps on evaporating. The particles of liquid absorb
energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during evaporation.
 This absorption of energy from the surroundings make the surroundings cold.
PLASMA
 The state consists of super energetic and super excited particles. These particles are in the
form of ionised gases.
 The fluorescent tube and neon sign bulbs consist of plasma. Inside a neon sign bulb
there is neon gas and inside a fluorescent tube there is helium gas or some other gas.
 The gas gets ionised, that is, gets charged when electrical energy flows through it. This
charging up creates a plasma glowing inside the tube or bulb.
BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE
 In 1920, Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose had done some calculations for a fifth state
of matter.
 Building on his calculations, Albert Einstein predicted a new state of matter – the Bose-
Einstein Condensate (BEC).
 The BEC is formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density, about one-hundred-
thousandth the density of normal air, to super low temperatures.

CONCLUSION:
Through this chapter we can understand different
states of matter and their properties. The effect of
temperature and pressure on the change of states
of matter. The concept of evaporation, the factors
affecting evaporation and the cooling effect caused
by evaporation. It also opens the path of two more
states of matter that is plasma and Bose- Einsteins
condensate which helps to inculcate curiosity.

  • 1. MATTER IN OUR SURROUNDINGS SUBMITTED BY: SHIVARATHNA G R, B. Ed, 1st YEAR RIE, MYSURU
  • 2. MATTER  Everything in this universe is made up of material which scientists have named “matter”.  Matter can be defined as anything which occupies space and have mass.  Examples:  The air we breathe, the food we eat,  stones, clouds, stars,  plants and animals,  even a small drop of water or a particle of sand.
  • 3. PHYSICAL NATURE OF MATTER.  Matter is made up of particles.  Particles can be regarded as the smallest unit of matter.  They are very small.
  • 4.  Particles of matter have space between them.  Particles of matter are continuously moving.  Particles of matter attract each other.
  • 5. STATES OF MATTER • There exists three different states of matter- solid, liquid and gas. • These states of matter arise due to the variation in the characteristics of the particles of matter.
  • 6. THE SOLID STATE  Solids have a definite shape, distinct boundaries and fixed volumes, that is, have negligible compressibility.  Solids have a tendency to maintain their shape when subjected to outside force.  Solids may break under force but it is difficult to change their shape, so they are rigid. Examples: Rubber band, sugar, sponge etc.
  • 7. THE LIQUID STATE  Liquids have no fixed shape but have a fixed volume.  They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept.  Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not rigid but can be called fluid.

THE GASEOUS STATE  Gases are highly compressible as compared to solids and liquids.  In the gaseous state, the particles move about randomly at high speed.  Due to this random movement, the particles hit each other and also the walls of the container.  The pressure exerted by the gas is because of this force exerted by gas particles per unit area on the walls of the container.
  • 9. CHANGE OF STATES OF MATTER  Can matter change its states??? yes, they do.  Example: water • solid, as ice, • liquid, as the familiar water, and • gas, as water vapour.
  • 10. EFFECT OF CHANGE OF TEMPERATURE  On increasing the temperature of solids, the kinetic energy of the particles increases.  Due to the increase in kinetic energy, the particles start vibrating with greater speed.  The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of attraction between the particles.  The particles leave their fixed positions and start moving more freely.  A stage is reached when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid.  The temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at the atmospheric pressure is called its melting point.
  • 11.  The amount of heat energy that is required to change 1 kg of a solid into liquid at atmospheric pressure at its melting point is known as the latent heat of fusion.  The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling at the atmospheric pressure is known as its boiling point.
  • 12. SUBLIMATION  A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state or vice versa is called sublimation.
  • 13. EFFECT OF CHANGE IN PRESSURE  The difference in various states of matter is due to the difference in the distances between the constituent particles.  Applying pressure and reducing temperature can liquefy gases.
  • 14. EVAPORATION  The phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapours at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
  • 15. FACTORS AFFECTING EVAPORATION Surface area. Temperature Humidity Wind speed.
  • 16. EVAPORATION CAUSES COOLING.  In an open vessel, the liquid keeps on evaporating. The particles of liquid absorb energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during evaporation.  This absorption of energy from the surroundings make the surroundings cold.
  • 17. PLASMA  The state consists of super energetic and super excited particles. These particles are in the form of ionised gases.  The fluorescent tube and neon sign bulbs consist of plasma. Inside a neon sign bulb there is neon gas and inside a fluorescent tube there is helium gas or some other gas.  The gas gets ionised, that is, gets charged when electrical energy flows through it. This charging up creates a plasma glowing inside the tube or bulb.

BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE  In 1920, Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose had done some calculations for a fifth state of matter.  Building on his calculations, Albert Einstein predicted a new state of matter – the Bose- Einstein Condensate (BEC).  The BEC is formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density, about one-hundred- thousandth the density of normal air, to super low temperatures.

  • 21. CONCLUSION: Through this chapter we can understand different states of matter and their properties. The effect of temperature and pressure on the change of states of matter. The concept of evaporation, the factors affecting evaporation and the cooling effect caused by evaporation. It also opens the path of two more states of matter that is plasma and Bose- Einsteins condensate which helps to inculcate curiosity.
