Abstract: Eco-Friendly is the act of living with intent. The intent is focused on not creating harm to
environment through interactions. There are various technologies and materials developed by various
research organizations, innovators and manufacturers in India that are beneficial in the housing
construction. The eco-friendly building materials represents a response from the building sector intended
to reduce the environmental cost of making and using buildings. In the construction industry, selection of
sustainable structural materials during the design phase leads to move towards more sustainable
construction. Therefore, there is a need to select more eco-friendly building materials to be used in
construction. The paper reviews some of the important fundamentals on which green engineering is based
and shows how the advantages offered by green materials can be harnessed for societal, economic and
technological benefits.
Aim: To study about the eco-friendly building materials and construction techniques used presently in
India.
Objective:
To study the minimal impact on the local infrastructure.
To analyze new methods of work and manufacture that are less harmful to environment.
To study great longevity and cost effective construction.
Comparative study between conventional and eco-friendly building materials using sustainability
measures.
Methodology: The distribution of urban growth in world has large implications for resource demand,
environmental degradation, technological development and global trade in building materials. In terms of
reducing global environmental impact from building materials production and use, one of the most
important factor to transfer low pollution and energy efficient production technology and resource
management programs to developing countries like India. The eco-friendly building material are those
that provide appropriate service and life span with minimum maintenance, while minimizing the
extraction of raw materials, the pollution from, and energy consumed by manufacturing and use, and that
have the maximum potential for reuse or resource recovery.

Material / Product selection criteria:
• Resource Efficiency: It includes properties like
recycled content, natural/renewable, resource
efficient manufacturing process, locally available,
refurbished/remanufactured, reusable/recyclable
and durability.
• Indoor Air Quality: IAQ is enhanced by utilizing
materials of following properties: low or non-toxic,
minimal chemical emission, moisture resistant and
healthfully maintained.
2. A prototype of two storey was constructed using eco
friendly building materials A sustainable decision
support system (SDSS) was used to compare between
structural building materials of the two structural
systems. The results showed that the eco
system had better sustainability rank (67%) than
conventional system (56%) and the Eco
system was better than the conventional system during
the three phases of total life cycle assessment
0.5% and 9%, respectively.
