Resp. system
1. What is the respiratory system
and what does it do?
The respiratory system is a body system
that is responsible for performing the
task of getting oxygen into the body and
removing carbon dioxide and water
from the body.
2. Organs of the system and their
functions:
• Nose and mouth: oxygen enters.
• Trachea(wind pipe): tube that enters chest cavity and
splits into 2 smaller tubes called bronchi.
• Epiglottis: flap that opens to let air in ; keeps food
out.
• Lungs: bronchial tubes that divide into smaller tubes
which connect to tiny sacs called alveoli.
• Diaphragm: a muscle that pumps carbon dioxide out
of lungs and pulls oxygen into the lungs.
3. Connections to other systems
• Rib cage protects the lungs - Skeletal
system
• Diaphragm, a muscle - Muscular
system
• Epiglottis keeps food out - Digestion
system
• Lungs, where oxygen is picked up by
blood - Circulatory system
4. Possible diseases that can affect this
system:
• Asthma – a disorder that is controllable, but not curable that
causes airways of lungs to swollen and narrow bleeding to
wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.
• Pneumonia – a breathing condition – infection of the lungs,
that creates a fluid and mucus that blocks the alveoli.
• Bronchitis – the condition in which the lining of the bronchial
tubes becomes inflamed or infected.
• Lung cancer - occurs when this uncontrolled cell growth
begins in one or both lungs.
• Common Cold is an infection of the nose, nasal passages, and
the throat.
5. The steps of how the system works
when inhaling:
1) The diaphragm contracts and flattens out so lungs have
more room to grow larger as they fill up with air.
2) At the same time, we inhale air through mouth and nose
3) Air goes through the wind pipe or trachea.
4) On the way down the windpipe, tiny hairs called cilia move
gently to keep mucus and dirt out of the lungs.
5) Air goes through the series of branches in your lungs,
through the bronchi and bronchioles.
6) Air ends up in the alveoli which fills up with air, and then the
lungs get bigger.
6. The steps of how the system works
when exhaling:
1) The diaphragm relaxes and moves up, pushing air out of the
lungs.
2) Rib muscles become relaxed, and your ribs move in again,
creating a small space in your chest.
3) By now, the cells have used the oxygen they need, and your
blood is carrying carbon dioxide and other wastes that must
leave your body.
4) The blood comes back through the blood vessels, or
capillaries and wastes enter the alveoli.
5) Then you breathe out the carbon dioxide in the reverse order
of how they came in – the air goes through the bronchioles,
out the bronchi, out of the trachea, and finally out through
the mouth and nose.
7. What systems would not function
without the respiratory system?
• Digestive system: muscles can not
function without oxygen ; no way
to push down food.
• Cardiovascular: the heart can not
pump with out oxygen and
deliver blood to the body.
8. Interesting Facts about the respiratory
system…..
• The left lung is smaller than the
right lung to provide space for
the heart.
• The sneezing rate/speed record is
165 km per hour.
• The breathing rate is faster in
children and woman than in men.
