Cholesterol is made in the liver and regulates blood fluidity. It provides stability to cell membranes. Too much LDL cholesterol can block arteries and reduce blood flow, causing heart problems. HDL counters LDL by transporting cholesterol from cells back to the liver to be removed from the body. There are two main types of cholesterol - LDL, which delivers cholesterol to cells and deposits in artery walls, and HDL, which transports cholesterol away from tissues and arteries. High levels of HDL are beneficial while low levels of LDL are preferable. Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic condition causing abnormally high cholesterol that runs in families and increases heart disease risk.
