Long distance running is an excellent way to boost a human's cardiovascular stamina and increase
the strength in an athletes fast–twitch muscle system in his/her legs. The reason it is so effective in
improving someone's health is because it keeps the heart beating at a high rate for a long period of
time. This sends oxygen quickly to all the body's key receptors which is essential to maintain motor
skills, and better a human's growth and blood flow. It also enables the heart to adapt and strengthen
to be able to handle such a strain for such a long period of time. This helps athletes keep energy
during games and practice without getting as tired. Long distance running is usually done as a team
or in smaller groups throughout the team. For example, the backs receivers will run in one group
and the lineman and linebackers will run in the other. The distance teams run always varies based on
the coaches, how the practice has gone so far, and the weather, but usually when I say "a long

Touch Football Strengths
This term in PE we have been focusing on energy systems and exercise physiology principles in
Touch Football. In touch there are three positions: middle, link and wing. My fitness results, when
compared to an Australian Touch Association player (ATA player), are only satisfactory. My speed
and cardiovascular endurance were within range of ATA players but my agility was not, therefore, I
have chosen wing as my best–suited position as the key fitness components for this position are
speed, agility, power and cardiovascular endurance. In order for me to improve in my least acquired

After being tested for power and speed through a timed 20m sprint; coordination, balance and
agility via a T–test and cardiovascular endurance by running the beep–test my results came back as
average across the board. My 20–metre sprint time of 3.32 and beep–test result of 12.4 both came
within the range of all ATA players' results of 2.9 to 3.4 and 12.2 to 14.3 respectively (12PEMoodle,
2015). However, my agility results came back as slower than the range of all ATA players. As a
result, this means that I am less equipped for the positions link and centre, as they both require, not
only agility, but also balance and coordination too. Balance and coordination predominately derive
from experience playing touch football, which I have a limited amount of. Reasons for my below
average results could have been due to the testing being done on dewy morning grass without studs
to gain traction in high speed situations like the speed and agility test. Touch football has three

Touch Football Training Program Analysis
For this term's HPE unit, we have learnt about core physiological principles as well as fitness and
training concepts, and how this would relate to touch football. This knowledge was then utilised to
design, evaluate and modify an individual one week training program (microcycle) to enhance
performance in touch football. The task of this assessment is to analyse the training program upon
completion, by evaluating its strengths and weaknesses and finally modifying this 'microcycle' to

The final training method performed for the day was a fartlek exercise. Each repetition was
comprised of a 40 second period of full intensity with a 20 second period of slow jogging given as
rest. This was repeated three times to complete a full set. It was noted in my training diary that this
was a fault due to the work to rest ratio set. Despite my aerobic capacity being deemed 'excellent', it
was not practical to allow such a higher work than rest. This is because of the training principle
'progressive overload' which implies that "the load needs to be slowly increased as we become
accustomed to the existing level of resistance to bring about further improvements." This suggests
that training loads should become more intense over a period of time, not increased too abruptly or
with too much intensity. As the body has not been given time to adapt to this high training intensity

After being established in the 70's, Touch Football is now played in every state of Australia and is
ever increasing in popularity. Touch is a fast paced, thrilling sport that allows people of all ages to
get involved with a rugby league style game without the major contact required in normal Rugby.
Coaches for both league and union utilize many variations of touch at training as it can be used to
improve skills while also having contact removed to avoid the possibility of injury. The overall aim
in a game of Touch Football is for your team to score more touchdowns than your opponents. This is
achieved by placing the ball in your opponents `Touchdown Zone. Touchdowns can be scored in a
multiple amount of ways like rucking, wrapping and switching the ball to create space to score.

HPE.
ATP overview:
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is a chemical compound formed to provide the body with energy.
The molecule is made up of 1 adenosine molecule and 3 phosphate molecules which can be seen as;
(A + P + P + P = ATP). The body obtains ATP from carbohydrates, fats and proteins and only small
amounts of ATP can be stored in muscle cells, for about 10 seconds only. It only takes the body
around 3 minutes to fully restore its ATP supply.

Touch Football is a team sport consisting of two teams of 6 players on the field at a given time. It is
a high intensity game, involving bursts of maximal speed and power. During a game of Touch
Football, all three energy systems work towards energy production required for muscular
contractions, however one energy system will always be dominant and will be determined by the
intensity and duration of the effort performed.
The ATP–CP system, fuelled by Creatine Phosphate (CP), is dominant at intensities above 95% of

player were 12.8 and 10.8 respectively (Appendix 2). This higher relative VO2 maximum of males
is due to cardiac hypertrophy (larger and stronger heart), which increases stroke volume per beat,

This report focusses on the 3 energy systems of fitness before relating them to touch football. Touch
football is a simple but fast paced game, where the main objective is for one team to score more
tries then their opponent. Scoring a tri is achieved by placing the ball in the opponents 'tri zone'.
Played on a 70m long by 50m wide field over a 45–minute time period, the game consists on two 20
minutes blocks of play with a five–minute half time break.
2.0 Three energy systems
Energy is defined as the capacity for vigorous activity, and to ensure a continuous and sufficient
supply of energy for all daily activities, there are three energy systems that work together. These
systems are the ATP–PC system, the anaerobic glycolytic system and the aerobic system. Each
system produces a different chemical energy from different sources at different speeds. Both the
ATP–CP system and anaerobic glycolytic systems are anaerobic systems, meaning oxygen is not
used to synthesise ATP. As a result, these systems produce energy quicker however they do not last

coordination. Coordination is needed for all positions in touch football to help your nervous system
and your muscles to work together, so that you can perform specific movements smoothly and
accurately (Amezdroz, 2004). Examples of coordination in touch football are hand–eye coordination
whilst catching and passing the ball and touching an opposing player. Also, foot and leg
coordination whilst running up the field and back on side. In recent fitness tests coordination is
measured by the alternate hand rebound test. Results showed that I got a score of 27 with my hand–

Rugby/Football, now simply known as touch. The main differences in the rules of the game of touch
and rugby league is that there is no tackling you have to touch the attacking player instead, kicking
is not allowed, the dummy half cannot get touched and the ball is not allowed to drop to the ground.
In the game of touch there are three positions and two players at each position on the field, the
positions are middle, link and wing. The main roles for the middle are to ruck/drive the ball down
the field in attack and to close down the defence. The predominant energy system used at a
professional level is the lactic acid system but as they are subbed off regularly and at a senior high
school level we do not have the luxury of enough players to sub on the energy system used changes

institution that I have been working with since sophomore year is Grassroots Tennis and Education

tackling. In the game of touch football, there are many different fitness components that relate to

also specific to the nature of touch football, due to the short sharp turns. The second aerobic
capacity test we completed was the 12 minute run. For this test we had to run for 12 minutes trying
to complete the maximum distance we could. My ratings for this test were good, (see appendix 1).
These tests can be related to touch football, as touch football requires aerobic fitness because
players need to be able to last a 40 minute game of continuous running. Even though in touch you
have a number of subs, you are continuously subbing on and off. You do not get much rest, as the
game is very vigorous. Aerobic capacity is mainly for the middle position in touch football, as they
have to run a lot more during the game and are the fittest players on the field, (SportingPulse, 2013).
Muscular endurance is being able to work a muscle or muscle group for a long period of time at less
than maximum effort, (Amezdrox, G. Dickens, S, Hosford, G. and Davis, D. 2012). Muscular
endurance was tested by completing a sit up and push up test. My rating for the sit up test were
super and for the push up test my rating was excellent, (see appendix 1). These tests were chosen
instead of others because if you have a strong core whilst playing touch football, it is seen that you
can perform better and this is what these tests work on, (Touch Football Australia, 2013).

My 20–metre sprint time of 3.32 and beep–test result of 12.4 both came within the range of all ATA players' results of 2.9 to 3.4 and 12.2 to 14.3 respectively (12PEMoodle, 2015).
