Alternate Ending For Beowulf
It was a few months after the mighty sea beast; the Mother of Grendel had been defeated. Beowulf and his trusty thanes had been celebrating in the
mead hall enjoying all of the fame and glory that killing the beast had given them. They drank the finest wine from golden cups. The King and his
thanes were living in absolute royalty. It was at the peak of the night's darkness, fog covered the kingdom. The town was fast asleep, the King and his
thanes were also out cold. There was an eerie sense in the air. It had almost been too long without any commotion. The kingdom, at the top of the Food
chain, hadn't been attacked for nearly two years now. Massive boulders rained from the sky; each breaking as it struck the ground. Debris scattered and

Beowulf, knowing the beast would strike again that night, gathered his thanes and set out on a hunt. A hunt of which the prey was not known. They had
no knowledge of the mighty beast; they were unsure of what it looked like and where it lived. They traveled across leagues of land, and they searched
the sea until they could no longer swim. They finally, after exhausting themselves for the entire day, trudged up the mountains– the only area of the land
they had hoped to avoid. The mountains were an unknown world to the geats. They had never been forced to travel on the dangerous terrain. They
knew those who entered never returned, but all of the thanes trusted Beowulf. After all, he had given them everything they owned. So onward they
moved as the sky grew darker. The night was approaching; they knew they must find the beast before it struck their town again. Beowulf silenced his
thanes after hearing a not so subtle movement. They felt the presence of something. They felt that it wasn't a friend. Beowulf knew the beast was near.
The beast knew Beowulf and his men were in the mountains. It had been watching them throughout their

Essay on Achilles' Shield
As long as there is thought there will always be debate as to the relevance and applications of any figure that has potential symbolism deeper than its
appearance. We see it with the Bible, with its accompanying fundamentalism, literalism, interpretationalism, and its downright detractors. Attention
given to an object for such a prolonged time is bound to foster battleground for linguists, philosophers, and literary scholars. Additionally, we see it
with the Shield of Achilles in Homer's The Iliad. The Shield is a literary figure of beauty which the world has enjoyed, despised, and revered for several
millennia. Its lengthy and detailed description forces any reader to, if not look past it for higher meaning, at least imagine and ... Show more content on

He compares the physical description, with the circular depiction of the cosmos and geologic structure of the earth, and the significance of the two
images, in the depiction of the God(s) interaction with man. Nibley quotes Justin Martyr when he said that "Homer became acquainted with Moses'
cosmic teachings while he was visiting Egypt... impressed by what he [Moses] had written about the origin of the cosmos, he depicted it in the Shield of
Achilles." (Nibley, pg. 46) This interpretation causes there to be a more eternal implication in the tone of the Shield, instead of merely a work of beauty,
it is a work of Divine Beauty, wherein a revelation of the world as it really is, is incorporated into the description.
There is, also, a thought wherein the importance of the Shield's image is merely a meandering act of poetic prowess by Homer. That the Poet's stream of
thought brought it about, as much of an aesthetic wonder as a relief from the intensity of the battle scenes. This mode of thought was described by
Oliver Taplin in his essay The Shield of Achilles Within the Iliad that takes an in depth attempt to discover the meaning of the Shield. During his
explanation of the Shield he states this idea, as best understood by him when he wrote "the explanation which is, I suspect, most in keeping with the
dominant school of what might be called `primitive oral poetics', namely that the oral poet has simply wandered on from

Not to say police shootings are always unjust, but they are almost always preventable, to some degree. But what I'm worried about the most is
militarizing the police. I know this may stray off topic a bit but as one of the designer/creators of this project, I don't want this to be used casually to
harass citizens just for something like a speeding ticket. The point of this is to stop a bullet and blind the attacker so the cop can mase, taze or subdue a
dangerous criminal. My hope is that cops will be responsible when it comes to this piece of equipment. The biggest shortcoming is the shortcoming of
others who are not responsible enough to use this shield in the right

My First Day For Inner City Kids
Honk, honk and we were off to Houston, Texas. The trip was about 5 hours long and I was exhausted when we arrived at the Impact Church of Christ.
We were there for a mission trip to put on a vacation bible school for inner city kids that were less fortunate. The first day we arrived at the church we
had to set up and meet with the other youth groups. My youth group was set up in the furthest building from the auditorium. We had about an hour
before we had to pick up the kids for vacation bible school. Before we picked them up, we assigned people within our own youth group to different task
groups. I was one of the oldest kids in the youth group so they put me in the yellow group. Yellow group had the oldest kids which were in 5th grade.
There were not a lot of 5th graders so they combined the yellow group with blue group which contained 4th graders. After we assigned groups there
was a lot to get done still before they arrived. We had to set up our skit before the kids arrived. Our group skit was about how the devil tempts us to do
bad things and how we need to fight that temptation. The skit opens as God is telling Eve not to eat from the tree of life, but the devil would jump in
and tell Eve that it would make her powerful. She fell for Satan's trick and ate from the tree of life and then convinced Adam to eat the fruit too. God
then kicked them out of the land and forbid them to ever go there again.
We finally get to pick up the kids. I was dying to meet one of the kids

The Shield Of Achilles Poetry Analysis
W.H. Auden's The Shield of Achilles and Musee des Beaux Arts encapsulate the sense of nihilism that pervade society after World War II. It is an age of
disillusionment when people can no longer put faith in science and technology, since they have witnessed the catastrophe brought about by machines;
nor can they rely on their government, as totalitarianism has created a frigid world where nothingness stands. However, although the prospect of the
contemporary world seems bleak, W.H. Auden still harbors a flicker of hope. Through the use of ekphrasis and other poetic techniques, Auden implies
that it is a matter of one's choice to break away from this prevailing pessimism.
Indeed, in The Shield of Achilles, it seems that Auden has no confidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paintings are mute in themselves and ekphrasis brings them alive. Auden lives in a world that is so bleak that one can no longer find expressions –
people resign to their current condition and totalitarianism represses people's voices. Also, when we look at paintings, we "feel" instead of "describe" –
the process of verbalization takes more efforts. Very few are willing to take a step further and take an active stance. It's a boundary that only a few
attempts to take. Auden breaks the silence by using ekphrasis; He adds another layer of sensation– auditory aspect that forces us to take notice of the
situation. In Musee des Beaux Arts, Auden uses onomatopoeia like "splashing" and "forsaken cry," as if he is calling our attention to the fall of Icarus in
reality. His use of progressive verbs "walking...waiting...skating... falling" and repetitive sound of "ing" imply that it is up to our responsibility to stop
this continuous insensitivity. In The Shield of Achilles, he uses consonance – "column ... column ... cloud" –– to create a cacophonous effect that stirs
unease within us, raising our awareness of the severity of current condition. Moreover, by reading the poems without seeing the paintings, Auden
suggests that we can envision, construct, and reshape our own paintings. After all, our own realities are creations of our

Crashing in a Back Door
The alien ship's thrusters fired as it shifted dimensions. At best it softened the impact as the stationary craft was suddenly propelled forwards from an
external force. The external force being the spin of the planet that had effectively just crashed into them. Like a bug on a windshield they were stuck,
propelled along with the planet. It had been a heavily calculated move on Zero's part and had taken more than a day of calculations followed by another
day of cross referencing independent data. It seemed to have paid off though and all systems now showed them squarely in the mess hall of the enemy.
Alien forces barely had time to react before the ship appeared and quickly became a twisted flaming wreckage. Most died when the space they were
occupying was suddenly filled with hot metal craft, others were torn apart or spread like jam, as the ship slid the short distance across the room, only to
crash into the back wall. The rooms automatic fire extinguishers did their best to extinguish those on fire as their flesh melted away regardless.
Inside the wreckage Zero checked for Dana's life signs. The tick pod she had taken refuge in was designed to withstand severe impacts, although not
specifically being hit with a planet. When her vitals checked out he did a quick manual test with Scott, moving his arms and legs, inspecting for
damages. The worst of his previous wounds had already healed and Zero put the zombie at about ninety percent efficiency.

Shield In The Odyssey
By definition, a shield is a broad piece of material used as protection against blows (Oxford Dictionary
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/shield). In Homer's heroic epic The Illiad translated by Robert Fagles, however, a
shield's purpose extends far beyond its protective nature. Homer uses shields to characterize their owners and to indirectly reveal his ideology of war.
The first shield Homer symbolizes is in Book seven: the shield of Great Ajax. This huge body shield, or as Homer metaphorically describes it: rampart,
is used as protection against the "glorious Hector" who even Achilles dreads to pit himself against and who the gods have promised survival (Book 7,
Line 60,130, 252). Yet the seemingly indestructible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the Great Ajax, whose shield played a key component in his exploit, Agamemnon's shield serves more as a symbol of force. He, in fact, hardly
has to use his shield as a defensive device at all. His shield is beautifully crafted with ten rings of bronze, twenty disks of glittering tin, a center with
bulging blue steel, an implant of the Gorgon's grim mask, and shapes of Rout and Fear (Book Eleven, Line 35–45). Overall, this ornate apparatus
portrays Homer's idea that war was glamorous. Agamemnon left his homeland and people to slay opposing men for one main goal: glory. Because glory
and fame are connotative with glamour, this further supports the ideology that Homer viewed war as glamourous. Of all the adornments upon the
shield, the most peculiar is Gorgon's grim mask. This mask derives from the sub conscience fears of man or can even be described as a "pursuing
nightmare phantom" (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/500901?

Essay on History and Mechanics of Viking Warfare
Vikings Reign In the earliest years of the Vikings, there was little history recorded due to the polytheistic views that they followed. After the Vikings
converted to Christianity, there were eventually written documents created pertaining to their existence. In Viking Warfare, I.P. Stephenson states that
the Vikings "first described attack took place in AD 789"(11). The Vikings were also known as Norsemen. They were great storytellers, and that is
perhaps how society knows so much about them today. The stories that the Norsemen told were called Sagas. Today, Vikings are often depicted as
murderous savages, but while they were not pillaging villages they were actually quite a peaceful civilization. There were three countries that Vikings

Wooden shields could endure battles, while also not wearing out the warrior from its weight. Most of the shields only lasted one battle and were painted
with various colors depending on what village the Vikings were fighting for. The Vikings wore helmets without horns on them, although that is how
they have been depicted in today's history. Typically the Vikings helmets were made out of iron with a nose guard descending down from the top of the
helmet for facial protection. The higher ranked Vikings were commonly the warriors that wore the helmets. Vikings were buried with their armor and
weapons, and there have not been that many helmets found with their remains. Although there has been some helmets found, it was not that common
for the warriors to wear them on account of how it could become a nuisance while in battle. In Norse Warfare, Martina Sprague states, "when deciding
to wear armor, the Viking warrior had to consider his maneuverability on the battlefield and the weight of the protective gear"(159). It was not that
common for chain mail to be worn by the Viking warriors. This type of armor was a sign of social status, but many warriors chose not to wear it
because it was uncomfortable and heavy. The Vikings also wore leather layers of clothing serving as their main form of body armor. Wearing leather
under chain mail was optional but not necessary. Although armor was important it was not the Vikings main concern when it came to the

Shiba Drills:Pupper's Rescue
It was a normal day like any other Shiba the dog was sleeping, and his friend John was petting him. Then, out of nowhere Shiba got up and went to his
bed, and opened a secret hideout hatch with his paw,and it was a hideout that was pretty awesome and had some of the highest quality dog tech

kill an evil Living Skeleton, so after he got all of his armor on, Then Shiba walked away and got all his gear and also put on his cannon, and his trusty
doggo alert vest on and he looked like he was ready to fight in world war dog, then he set off to find pupper, and save him from skeletor's evil ways.So
as Shiba was walking around he saw a large old purplish blue building with a defence tower like top and some structural support columns to keep the

stealthy and then as he was thinking that, suddenly he got an alert saying "You are nearing Pupper's location".And at that moment he knew, that skeletor
would definitely be in there if puppers location is nearby so after a little while of thinking and planning, Shiba went inside and was quickly met with a
light odor of brick and then a more detectable odor of Pupper and bones. He could also smell something fishy, and then remembered he packed a salmon
for lunch. After a little mind preparation he went into a dark hole cavern like place and had a spark in his brain and remembered at the suburbs that

With that Leif started slapping the head of his axe against the metal dome which rested in the center of his shield. When the other Norse men did the

Pros And Cons Of Computed Tomography
Computed Tomography (CT) is an excellent tool in the medical field for the detection of diseases and injuries. Since its initial introduction in the 1970s,
it has revolutionized imaging techniques which were limited, and over time it has grown more powerful with advances in technology. These
improvements have led to more detailed images, and faster imaging speeds, but it also led to a huge popularity among the technology. This popularity
has spiked its usage over the last quarter of contrary, leading to better diagnosis's and also exposing more patients and to multiple scan, with
compounding radiation. The radiation in CT scans is much higher than natural exposure and even X–rays, which has led many scholar to view the

5. Describe and explain the importance of the Shield of Achilles. Be sure to discuss the shield as an example of the microcosm and macrocosm of the
Greek world.
The Shield of Achilles was used by Achilles in his fight with Hector. Achilles was given this shield by his mother but made by the god Hephaestus. "
The shield itself was five layers thick, and he Crafted its surface with all of his genius" (Homer 254). In the Iliad it goes on to explain more in detail.
The shield is not only a weapon, but it can also be seen as a microcosm image of the Greek world. "...for Homer, the Greek world was itself imaged in
the shield of Achilles, which functioned as a microcosm of the totality of macrocosm, in this case, a restatement of a kind of Greek creation account..."
(Jay).

Homer's The Iliad has many literary devices within it that he uses effectively. However, the device introduced in book eighteen, known as the shield of

as his mother pleads the god to replace his armor that was taken by Hector of Troy as a prize. Homer describes the shield to have layers of detailed

According to the model the IT Monarchy style allows IT executives to hold the right to make important IT decisions. A more affective mechanism
could be put in place by AC in the form of an IT leadership council that includes corporate and business unit CIOs.
What do questions 1 & 2 tell us about IT governance at CS? Is it appropriately structured for this kind of decision?
As mentioned above, AC and Canadian Shield both reflect signs of the IT Monarchy style of IT governance. It appears that by letting the same IT
manager that helped create the existing problematic information system called ALPHA spearhead the project of finding its replacement was a conflict
of interest.
In an industry that is heavily dependent on gaining a competitive advantage through operational efficiencies and consistently delivering value added
projects to the customer, it is essential for AC and CS to rethink the current corporate governance model.
Across almost all of the major IT governance categories, it seems that CS and AC are either lacking elements completely or lagging behind current IT
standards significantly. IT principles or high–level statements about how to use technology to create business value is non–existent in the Canadian
Shield philosophy statement and hard to identify within the case write–up by the authors. Furthermore, the corporate IT infrastructure and architecture
has become so archaic that the

Examples Of Explosionade In To Kill A Mockingbird
While the rest of his friends are busy storming a Horronym fortress in a final assault, first lieutenant Terry Atticus finds himself all alone back at the
base. Apparently his superior didn't take too kindly to some pipes in the officer's latrine that were accidently reversed by Atticus and thus the hapless
lieutenant is missing out on the biggest battle of all time. However, while rooting around in the supply room Atticus discovers a prototype mech which
he promptly takes into the sewers for some target practice. Instead of finding the snakebats he was expecting, Atticus discovers a whole bunch of aliens
and takes it upon himself to take them all out.

Killing everything that moves and collecting all the gold is not only more satisfying, but also results in a better score. For some extra motivation this
Steam version of the game also comes with new leaderboards. In addition to being able to jump and hover for a short period of time your mech also
comes with a handy multi–purpose shield. The shield makes you impervious to enemy fire and you can even bounce enemy grenades off it with good
timing. In addition, you can activate your shield just before hitting the floor or a wall after jumping to perform a nifty shield bounce in order to reach
greater heights. However, the shield overheats very quickly and must recharge between uses.
Although Explosionade is an action packed title it comes with multiple difficulty settings to ensure players of all skill levels have a fair shot at
completing it. Just like the arcade games of old it is possible to finish all the levels in a very short period of time, but the real challenge comes from
upping the difficulty and increasing the gameplay speed while aiming for a high score. Players who enjoy beating their own scores or competing with
others on the leaderboards will find that Explosionade has a lot of replay value. The game also features a co–op mode, which is a lot of

My Shield
My shield consisted of glowing Christmas lights with my family, sports, and dreams listed as important things in my life. I had prepared my poster
before the day of my speech so that I would be able to practice before my speech the next day. Although I practiced a little before the day of my speech,
it was not enough now that I look back on how my speech went. I felt that because I was sick 2 days before I performed my speech I was not prepared
enough for when I needed to go. As I was standing in front of my peers I was extremely nervous, and I am sure my classmates could tell. I also know
that you could tell I was nervous during my presentation. This not only made me unfocused, but made my speech turn out worse than I had anticipated.

I did a very good job of getting my three points across without confusing anyone. Another thing I thought I did very well was the visuals I brought in.
They were very big and everyone in the classroom was able to see them clearly. As the next speech comes around one thing I need to work on is my eye
contact. During my shield speech I only looked up a few times, but I never made eye contact individually with any people. Another thing I can improve
is how long I practice for my speech. If I would run through my speech a few times throughout the week and the night before my speech would turn out
much better. I also made very well written out index cards, but I did not use them as much of an aid. I think that if I practiced a little more than what I
did my speech could have flowed better. During my speech one thing that was really unexpected for me was the time. I came into the speech thinking I
would have plenty of time to get everything I wanted to say out, but when I started talking about my family I was already three minutes in. When it
came to the actual speech I almost had a small nervous

Galactic Empire Research Paper
The Galactic Empire is the largest military force in the galaxy, with their only opposition being the Rebel Alliance. The AT–AT Walker is arguably the
most powerful terrestrial vehicle at the disposal of the Galactic Empire. The Empire employs the AT–AT onto the battlefield as both a troop transport
and an assault craft. The AT–AT has been deployed in multiple battlefield environments, including the assault on Hoth and defense of the forest moon
of Endor, with deadly effect. The AT–AT is used when the Empire needs to assault an enemy position, or when a large amount of enemies need taken
out. The AT–AT is also utilized as a physiological deterrent.

One such weakness is its inability to attack anything behind its main body. The walker would have to turn completely around to engage a target behind
it thus exposing itself to the direction it was previously facing. One of the most commonly exploited weaknesses of the AT–AT is it high center of
gravity, making it top heavy. One example of the rebels taking advantage of this weakness is when the Empire assaulted Hoth. Rebel snow speeders
attached tow lines toe the walker's legs and wrapped the line around it until the walker got snagged and toppled over. The walker also has a hard time
attacking more than one target at a time. Another weakness is the flexible tunnel that runs between the cargo and troop areas of the craft and the head.
One direct blast to this tunnel detonated the entire AT–AT. The platting on the underbelly of the walker is slightly weaker and easier to damage. The
AT–AT also has no way to protect against troops beneath its main body, where the lightly armored hatch can be easily cut free and sabotaged. One other
big weakness in the design of the AT–AT is the fact that it is very slow compared to the smaller AT–ST. Also the terrain it is in can limit it much farther,
with it moving at its fastest on flat smooth ground and its slowest on steep rocky inclines, and heavily forested areas like the moon of Endor where its
usage was far less than the

Personal Essay : How Did I Get In A Tree
Through the murky depths, pain was the first thing I felt.
Stabbing brands of pain radiated outwards in eternal waves, dragging me awake. I opened my eyes, blinking as I took in my surroundings. The sky was
overcast but light, suggesting the time as somewhere in the afternoon.
Rain crashed down from above, creating a constant droning sound as it hit the forest floor in a million different places at once. Leaves flailed not from
wind, but from the impact of droplets.
Then I looked at the factory of pain that was my arm, and remembered everythung that happened. Knife. He took my knife. And broke my arm. How

When it was knuckle's length in, I took a rest, breathing heavily as the fire came in, unending in it's siege. I lay there for a while as the pain lessened
over time. Once it was back to its former level of agony, I continued readjusting the bone.
Resting the arm on my knee, I was avout to give the bone another push, when my hand slipped. I ended up shoving the end in a lot harder than I wanted

I think I might have screamed, but I wasn't sure. My vision turned blindingly white, then red, before splotches of black took over and dragged me to

Round two, I thought. I took hold of the arm in my other hand, and with an explosion of pain, snapped the bone back into place. I fell backwards

Character Analysis Of Ready Player One By Ernest Cline
In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, the main character, Wade, changes throughout the book. This is due to the experiences with trying to get
the answer to the puzzles with some of these being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail.
In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for himself due to his background and home life. At the start, he
came from a poor family so he had to be resourceful. He showed us that he "...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer's tiny
laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer" (Cline 13). The main character, Wade, was forced to sleep in the laundry room due
to how overcrowdedness of the stack he was in. Even though he had a large amount of his family living in the same small apartment with him, he was
still able to make room for himself. He made a small spot for himself to be comfortable in. This sets up how many people are in that small area and
adds to the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a part in changing him. He also was a very determined person. He was sometimes
obsessive with the ways he studied the life of Halliday. He states that "For the past five years, I'd devoted all my free time to learning as much as I
possibly could about James Halliday" (Cline 52). Wade was obsessed with the hunt and spent a large part of a long while studying everything that the
creator of the OASIS had loved in his life.

Essay Shield of Achilles and the Shield of Aeneas
A Comparative Study of the Shield of Achilles and the Shield of Aeneas
In Homer's great work, the Iliad, Achilles is given a set of armor, including a glorious shield which allows him to return to battle and carry out his
revenge against Hector. Likewise, in Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas is sent a shield for the purpose of aiding him in defending Rome from invasion. However,
these shields are made special not by their military value, but by the engravings that decorate their surfaces.
Achilles' shield holds engravings of common life during his time: farmers plowing the land, young men and women dancing in the vineyards, scenes of
the countryside, slaves working for their kings, and armies fighting each other. On the other hand, Aeneas' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And there were young men on it and young girls, sought for their beauty with gifts of oxen, dancing, and holding hands at the wrist" (Il., 18.590–594).
In fact, the majority of the shield depicts common Greek life; this being a quality that distinguishes Achilles' shield from those of other famous warriors
and heroes. Epics and their heroes usually involve gods and god–like feats, which are still true in the Iliad, yet the engravings on this shield are an
oxymoron of that style. Edwards best describes this in stating, "Like an enormous simile, the scenes on the shield hold the narrative still for a while as
we gaze at them; and the content is like that of a simile, too – it is the ordinary life of mankind that we observe, not that of heroes or gods" (278).
The shield is unique for the engravings it bears on its surface, however, its greater significance lies in what it represents, especially to Achilles' being.
At her son's birth, Thetis knew that Zeus had fated Achilles to die if he spilled Hector's blood. Despite warning him of this, Thetis could not sway her
son's decision to avenge Patrocles and kill Hector. Therefore, it is known from this point on that Achilles would soon die. Once he puts on the new
armor, Achilles accepts his impending doom, and even accepts it earlier as he speaks to his mother, saying,

Mericc Hero's Journey
Darkness.
Pain.
This is all that Mericc can sense for the longest time. The pain is everywhere but mostly from his left shoulder, flaring intensely to a consistent rhythm.
The darkness is worse though as it threatens to surround and engulf him, pulling him back down into the void. He struggles to break free from it's grip
and after a seemingly endless period of internal struggle a small dot of light appears before him. Mericc focuses all of his will on it, forcing it to stretch
until it is a thin line on the horizon. Sweat glistens on his forehead from the strain, or is it from the heat he feels emanating from the bright line? He is
not sure. Focusing even more intently, he pushes the line wider and wider until he can make out indistict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The worst of it though was the way his father would use the shield to push and prod him in whichever direction he wanted too. Finally his father feinted
another arcing attack with his shield and Mericc dodged then found his father's sword at his chest. Hawk eyes glared hard at Mericc who withered
before their intensity.
"Anything is a weapon in the hands of the well trained Mericc,' his father said. "A shield is a weapon, a castle is a weapon, even words are weapons.
Never forget this." Mericc nodded in pennance.
"You were wrong on the second point as well," his father continued. "If the past years have taught me anything it is that putting your life on the line to
protect something you care about more than yourself can give more glory than any mindless quest for personal fame. Remember this as well."

The And The Shield Of Faith
In verse the last verse, we find the last piece of the armor, the shield of faith. We can see that for Paul, this is an important part of the armor by how he
introduces this piece of armor and the words that follow it. As with all the previous pieces of the armor, the word following shield is specially important
to know of what this shield consists of and what it does. It is pretty clear in this one, that faith is what protects us from the devil. However, here it is
important to specify what faith is protecting us. "To speak of faith is not to focus on human belief, but on the faithfulness of God. What protects us from
the arrows of the evil one."(Snodgrass, 343). Snodgrass says this shield protects us from the arrows of the evil ones recalling that in the time when the
text was written, shields were used to protect soldiers from the burning arrows of the enemy. But Paul is actually talking about the attacks of the
spiritual forces of the evil. So what Paul is saying in this verse, is that the faithfulness of God will protect the believers from any attack from the evil.
"Be strong, alert and ready"(Snodgrass, 354), these are some of the theological principles that we find in Ephesians. More specifically, we can find
these three in Ephesians 6:10–16. God wants us to be strong, and he is willing to provide us with the strength of his spirit. However, recall that this is
something that we are not given when we are born. "Empowering is not automatic, but comes as we

What Makes A Personal Essay About Becoming A Warrior
Becoming a Warrior Recently, I have come to the conclusion that every trial in life is simply a battle contained within the life–long war we all must
fight. That being said, it is logical to assume that those with the most powerful weapons will have the easiest lives. The natural human thought process
leads to the question, "How do I gain said weapons?" Surprisingly, creating a cache of impressive weaponry is not as difficult as one may believe. After
surveying the First Better Business Bureau's list of UncommonSense Principles, I realized that every single object I needed to be successful in life was
right under my nose. Therefore, when I lost my best friend this past summer, I went straight to my arms cabinet to find the best weapons to prepare me
for battle. I came to the front lines armed with three UncommonSense principles: a helmet of courage, a sword of maturity, and a shield of forgiveness.

Australian Shield Laws
With more and more wealthy Australians bringing journalists and publishers to court to demand the revelation of sources shield laws are becoming
increasingly important. Shield laws can be defined as an array of laws that offer protection to journalists or other communicators who otherwise face a
disobedient contempt charge for refusing to reveal a confidential source. In particular, with the introduction of shield laws in Western Australia
journalists' professional ethics have taken priority over the demands of the law. Although these shield laws provide some protection for journalists and
their informants in WA there are still some weaknesses in terms of how these laws are interpreted in court. Furthermore, shield laws are significant in

In particular, sustaining the right to protect sources. These ethics are important to journalists as it creates this trust between contacts and journalists
allowing for significant public interest stories to break. This can be depicted in the case mentioned before between Steve Pennells and Gina Rinehart.
When Pennells won this case Justice Pritchard outlined that the disclosure of the source would constitute a breach of a fundamental ethical obligation of
journalists' to not disclose sources. This judgement was encouraging for journalists as it defended the importance of their ethical obligations,
specifically the right to protect sources and the right for sources to trust journalists with information they gave them confidentially. Without this trust
between journalists' and sources many public interest stories would not arise as it means that sources with genuine public interest concerns about
corruption and abuses of power will think twice before contacting a journalist. They would also not arise due to journalists' fears of either having to
reveal confidential information or face dire consequences for not disclosing these private details. This can be portrayed in 2012 as Fairfax journalists,
Nick Mckenzie, Richard Baker and Philip Dorling were ordered by the NSW Supreme Court to reveal to a Chinese–Australian businesswoman their
confidential sources for a series of stories on her relationship with a federal Labor MP. To expand on this story further The Age published two articles
alleging Ms Liu paid Joel Fitzgibbon $150,000 as part of ''a campaign to cultivate him as an agent of political and business influence''. The articles were

Shield Of Achilles
Hope often contrasts with reality, especially within Greek mythology or similar replications. For instance, The Shield of Achilles is written by W.H.
Auden in the form of a ekphrasis and details the content on the Shield of Achilles; The Shield of Achilles juxtaposes the idea of hope portrayed by
Thetis versus reality shown through Hephaestus (further referenced as Hep). The speaker in The Shield of Achilles is blunt in showing Thetis' imagery
of tranquility, peace and liveliness in comparison to Hep´s imagery of actuality, war and idleness. Tranquility often becomes contradicted by what is
happening in actuality. As shown in the first four lines of the poem, the speaker´s attitude is blunt; which is seen when "She looked over his shoulder
for vines and olive trees, marble well–governed cities and ships upon untamed seas"(Lines 1–4). These lines are straight to the point in showing that
Thetis looked over Hep's shoulder and was looking for three things. Thetis, Greek mother of Achilles instructed Hep´s, Greek god of blacksmiths to
make her son a shield with certain items on it. Thetis wanted things that showed tranquility and items that represented the reverenced aspect of Greek
culture. These items show imagery of Greece being calm and undisturbed, another things that can be inferred is Thetis, being a mother and only
wanting the best things for Achilles including his safety in a calm city. These items are juxtaposed with actuality when Hephaestus has done the
complete opposite of what Thetis has instructed. Hephaestus created "on the shining metal, his hands had put instead an artificial wilderness and a sky
like lead"(Lines 5–8). A shift occurs when Hep places the reality of what the Greeks are facing, which is a place that is becoming altered by man. He
also chooses to place what he wants to place on the shield, instead of what Thetis has instructed him place. Negative diction also occurs when the
speaker uses a world like artificial which usually has a negative connotation that often indicates fakeness, as well as a sky instead of being blue and
happy is dark heavy metal. Peace, a time of quietness once again ruined by threats of a war occurring. Thetis again "looked over his shoulder for ritual

Mother Gaea Alternate Ending
Apollo paced around in his castle muttering.

experience, in which any wrong move can result in the permanent final end of life, losing the privilege to find out how this war will end. I am sitting
behind the tree while the brain breaks everything up in segments. One part of the mind attempts to evaluate the defense of the body as well as any
damage. Another part recalls every single moment of the past several minutes: from the tiniest crack in a random stone to all drops of blood on the
pavement. The third part tries to analyze the overall situation and to choose the best moment for escape. This part is the most dangerous. It sent many
people towards an untimely end in a last grasp for life, the last attempt to make an escape. All of the above was scary and yet fear was subdued. It was
such a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings that I was not able to experience any feeling fully for a certain time. Not more than several hours ago I
was looking at my friend, laughing my

Shield Of Achilles And The Iliad
"[Thetis] look over [Hephaestus'] shoulder for vines and olive trees, marble well–governed cities and ships upon untamed seas, but...instead [saw] an
artificial wilderness and a sky like lead" ("The Shield of Achilles" 1–8). In the poem, "The Shield of Achilles," by W.H. Auden, and the epic poem, The
Iliad, by Homer, the shield forged for Achilles is portrayed in two very differing ways. "The Shield of Achilles" is a poem authored by W.H. Auden that
depicts the forging of Achilles' shield by Hephaestus as recorded in Book 18 of The Iliad. The poem exhibits Thetis watching Hephaestus, the god of
blacksmiths, forge the shield which will be delivered to Achilles as he is returning to combat. Ironically, rather than witnessing glorious and uplifting
scenes being engraved upon the shield as seen in Homer's epic poem, Thetis sees gloomy dismal images foreshadowing hopelessness and despair.
Although the two poems are very similar in the story they tell, they contain multiple differences and their content is very ... Show more content on

Auden, respectively, both display what at first may seem the same image and scene of Hephaestus forging the shield of Achilles. Although they are
about the same process of constructing Achilles' shield, when viewing the details of the shields they appear "black and white" and opposite. The
reaction and expectations of Thetis can be likened to the expectations of many people in the real world. Often times, one may plan an event, watch a
new movie, sporting event, or whatever it may be, and their expectations of the event, movie, or sporting event are far below what they expected or
hoped. This has happened to everyone. Thetis was very much like this and her expectations for her "royal, swift, and brilliant" Achilles were sky–high
and the resulting shield turned out to be contradictory to what she had hoped. The lesson to be learned: things do not always turn out the way one might

Alternate Ending For Beowulf

  • 1. Alternate Ending For Beowulf It was a few months after the mighty sea beast; the Mother of Grendel had been defeated. Beowulf and his trusty thanes had been celebrating in the mead hall enjoying all of the fame and glory that killing the beast had given them. They drank the finest wine from golden cups. The King and his thanes were living in absolute royalty. It was at the peak of the night's darkness, fog covered the kingdom. The town was fast asleep, the King and his thanes were also out cold. There was an eerie sense in the air. It had almost been too long without any commotion. The kingdom, at the top of the Food chain, hadn't been attacked for nearly two years now. Massive boulders rained from the sky; each breaking as it struck the ground. Debris scattered and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beowulf, knowing the beast would strike again that night, gathered his thanes and set out on a hunt. A hunt of which the prey was not known. They had no knowledge of the mighty beast; they were unsure of what it looked like and where it lived. They traveled across leagues of land, and they searched the sea until they could no longer swim. They finally, after exhausting themselves for the entire day, trudged up the mountains– the only area of the land they had hoped to avoid. The mountains were an unknown world to the geats. They had never been forced to travel on the dangerous terrain. They knew those who entered never returned, but all of the thanes trusted Beowulf. After all, he had given them everything they owned. So onward they moved as the sky grew darker. The night was approaching; they knew they must find the beast before it struck their town again. Beowulf silenced his thanes after hearing a not so subtle movement. They felt the presence of something. They felt that it wasn't a friend. Beowulf knew the beast was near. The beast knew Beowulf and his men were in the mountains. It had been watching them throughout their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Essay on Achilles' Shield As long as there is thought there will always be debate as to the relevance and applications of any figure that has potential symbolism deeper than its appearance. We see it with the Bible, with its accompanying fundamentalism, literalism, interpretationalism, and its downright detractors. Attention given to an object for such a prolonged time is bound to foster battleground for linguists, philosophers, and literary scholars. Additionally, we see it with the Shield of Achilles in Homer's The Iliad. The Shield is a literary figure of beauty which the world has enjoyed, despised, and revered for several millennia. Its lengthy and detailed description forces any reader to, if not look past it for higher meaning, at least imagine and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He compares the physical description, with the circular depiction of the cosmos and geologic structure of the earth, and the significance of the two images, in the depiction of the God(s) interaction with man. Nibley quotes Justin Martyr when he said that "Homer became acquainted with Moses' cosmic teachings while he was visiting Egypt... impressed by what he [Moses] had written about the origin of the cosmos, he depicted it in the Shield of Achilles." (Nibley, pg. 46) This interpretation causes there to be a more eternal implication in the tone of the Shield, instead of merely a work of beauty, it is a work of Divine Beauty, wherein a revelation of the world as it really is, is incorporated into the description. There is, also, a thought wherein the importance of the Shield's image is merely a meandering act of poetic prowess by Homer. That the Poet's stream of thought brought it about, as much of an aesthetic wonder as a relief from the intensity of the battle scenes. This mode of thought was described by Oliver Taplin in his essay The Shield of Achilles Within the Iliad that takes an in depth attempt to discover the meaning of the Shield. During his explanation of the Shield he states this idea, as best understood by him when he wrote "the explanation which is, I suspect, most in keeping with the dominant school of what might be called `primitive oral poetics', namely that the oral poet has simply wandered on from ... The point of this is to stop a bullet and blind the attacker so the cop can mase, taze or subdue a dangerous criminal. • 11. My First Day For Inner City Kids Honk, honk and we were off to Houston, Texas. The trip was about 5 hours long and I was exhausted when we arrived at the Impact Church of Christ. We were there for a mission trip to put on a vacation bible school for inner city kids that were less fortunate. The first day we arrived at the church we had to set up and meet with the other youth groups. My youth group was set up in the furthest building from the auditorium. We had about an hour before we had to pick up the kids for vacation bible school. Before we picked them up, we assigned people within our own youth group to different task groups. I was one of the oldest kids in the youth group so they put me in the yellow group. Yellow group had the oldest kids which were in 5th grade. There were not a lot of 5th graders so they combined the yellow group with blue group which contained 4th graders. After we assigned groups there was a lot to get done still before they arrived. We had to set up our skit before the kids arrived. Our group skit was about how the devil tempts us to do bad things and how we need to fight that temptation. The skit opens as God is telling Eve not to eat from the tree of life, but the devil would jump in and tell Eve that it would make her powerful. She fell for Satan's trick and ate from the tree of life and then convinced Adam to eat the fruit too. God then kicked them out of the land and forbid them to ever go there again. We finally get to pick up the kids. I was dying to meet one of the kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Shield Of Achilles Poetry Analysis W.H. Auden's The Shield of Achilles and Musee des Beaux Arts encapsulate the sense of nihilism that pervade society after World War II. It is an age of disillusionment when people can no longer put faith in science and technology, since they have witnessed the catastrophe brought about by machines; nor can they rely on their government, as totalitarianism has created a frigid world where nothingness stands. However, although the prospect of the contemporary world seems bleak, W.H. Auden still harbors a flicker of hope. Through the use of ekphrasis and other poetic techniques, Auden implies that it is a matter of one's choice to break away from this prevailing pessimism. Indeed, in The Shield of Achilles, it seems that Auden has no confidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paintings are mute in themselves and ekphrasis brings them alive. Auden lives in a world that is so bleak that one can no longer find expressions – people resign to their current condition and totalitarianism represses people's voices. Also, when we look at paintings, we "feel" instead of "describe" – the process of verbalization takes more efforts. Very few are willing to take a step further and take an active stance. It's a boundary that only a few attempts to take. Auden breaks the silence by using ekphrasis; He adds another layer of sensation– auditory aspect that forces us to take notice of the situation. In Musee des Beaux Arts, Auden uses onomatopoeia like "splashing" and "forsaken cry," as if he is calling our attention to the fall of Icarus in reality. His use of progressive verbs "walking...waiting...skating... falling" and repetitive sound of "ing" imply that it is up to our responsibility to stop this continuous insensitivity. In The Shield of Achilles, he uses consonance – "column ... column ... cloud" –– to create a cacophonous effect that stirs unease within us, raising our awareness of the severity of current condition. Moreover, by reading the poems without seeing the paintings, Auden suggests that we can envision, construct, and reshape our own paintings. After all, our own realities are creations of our ... At best it softened the impact as the stationary craft was suddenly propelled forwards from an external force. The external force being the spin of the planet that had effectively just crashed into them. Like a bug on a windshield they were stuck, propelled along with the planet. It had been a heavily calculated move on Zero's part and had taken more than a day of calculations followed by another day of cross referencing independent data. It seemed to have paid off though and all systems now showed them squarely in the mess hall of the enemy. Alien forces barely had time to react before the ship appeared and quickly became a twisted flaming wreckage. Most died when the space they were occupying was suddenly filled with hot metal craft, others were torn apart or spread like jam, as the ship slid the short distance across the room, only to crash into the back wall. • 19. Shield In The Odyssey By definition, a shield is a broad piece of material used as protection against blows (Oxford Dictionary http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/shield). In Homer's heroic epic The Illiad translated by Robert Fagles, however, a shield's purpose extends far beyond its protective nature. Homer uses shields to characterize their owners and to indirectly reveal his ideology of war. The first shield Homer symbolizes is in Book seven: the shield of Great Ajax. This huge body shield, or as Homer metaphorically describes it: rampart, is used as protection against the "glorious Hector" who even Achilles dreads to pit himself against and who the gods have promised survival (Book 7, Line 60,130, 252). Yet the seemingly indestructible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike the Great Ajax, whose shield played a key component in his exploit, Agamemnon's shield serves more as a symbol of force. He, in fact, hardly has to use his shield as a defensive device at all. His shield is beautifully crafted with ten rings of bronze, twenty disks of glittering tin, a center with bulging blue steel, an implant of the Gorgon's grim mask, and shapes of Rout and Fear (Book Eleven, Line 35–45). Overall, this ornate apparatus portrays Homer's idea that war was glamorous. Agamemnon left his homeland and people to slay opposing men for one main goal: glory. Because glory and fame are connotative with glamour, this further supports the ideology that Homer viewed war as glamourous. Of all the adornments upon the shield, the most peculiar is Gorgon's grim mask. This mask derives from the sub conscience fears of man or can even be described as a "pursuing nightmare phantom" (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/500901? • 21. Essay on History and Mechanics of Viking Warfare Vikings Reign In the earliest years of the Vikings, there was little history recorded due to the polytheistic views that they followed. After the Vikings converted to Christianity, there were eventually written documents created pertaining to their existence. In Viking Warfare, I.P. Stephenson states that the Vikings "first described attack took place in AD 789"(11). The Vikings were also known as Norsemen. They were great storytellers, and that is perhaps how society knows so much about them today. The stories that the Norsemen told were called Sagas. Today, Vikings are often depicted as murderous savages, but while they were not pillaging villages they were actually quite a peaceful civilization. There were three countries that Vikings ... Most of the shields only lasted one battle and were painted with various colors depending on what village the Vikings were fighting for. The Vikings wore helmets without horns on them, although that is how they have been depicted in today's history. Typically the Vikings helmets were made out of iron with a nose guard descending down from the top of the helmet for facial protection. The higher ranked Vikings were commonly the warriors that wore the helmets. Vikings were buried with their armor and weapons, and there have not been that many helmets found with their remains. Although there has been some helmets found, it was not that common for the warriors to wear them on account of how it could become a nuisance while in battle. In Norse Warfare, Martina Sprague states, "when deciding to wear armor, the Viking warrior had to consider his maneuverability on the battlefield and the weight of the protective gear"(159). It was not that common for chain mail to be worn by the Viking warriors. This type of armor was a sign of social status, but many warriors chose not to wear it because it was uncomfortable and heavy. The Vikings also wore leather layers of clothing serving as their main form of body armor. Wearing leather under chain mail was optional but not necessary. One such weakness is its inability to attack anything behind its main body. The walker would have to turn completely around to engage a target behind it thus exposing itself to the direction it was previously facing. One of the most commonly exploited weaknesses of the AT–AT is it high center of gravity, making it top heavy. One example of the rebels taking advantage of this weakness is when the Empire assaulted Hoth. Rebel snow speeders attached tow lines toe the walker's legs and wrapped the line around it until the walker got snagged and toppled over. The walker also has a hard time attacking more than one target at a time. Another weakness is the flexible tunnel that runs between the cargo and troop areas of the craft and the head. The AT–AT also has no way to protect against troops beneath its main body, where the lightly armored hatch can be easily cut free and sabotaged. This is due to the experiences with trying to get the answer to the puzzles with some of these being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail. In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for himself due to his background and home life. At the start, he came from a poor family so he had to be resourceful. He showed us that he "...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer's tiny laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer" (Cline 13). The main character, Wade, was forced to sleep in the laundry room due to how overcrowdedness of the stack he was in. Even though he had a large amount of his family living in the same small apartment with him, he was still able to make room for himself. He made a small spot for himself to be comfortable in. This sets up how many people are in that small area and adds to the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a part in changing him. He also was a very determined person. He was sometimes obsessive with the ways he studied the life of Halliday. He states that "For the past five years, I'd devoted all my free time to learning as much as I possibly could about James Halliday" (Cline 52). Essay Shield of Achilles and the Shield of Aeneas A Comparative Study of the Shield of Achilles and the Shield of Aeneas In Homer's great work, the Iliad, Achilles is given a set of armor, including a glorious shield which allows him to return to battle and carry out his revenge against Hector. Likewise, in Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas is sent a shield for the purpose of aiding him in defending Rome from invasion. However, these shields are made special not by their military value, but by the engravings that decorate their surfaces. Achilles' shield holds engravings of common life during his time: farmers plowing the land, young men and women dancing in the vineyards, scenes of the countryside, slaves working for their kings, and armies fighting each other. On the other hand, Aeneas' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And there were young men on it and young girls, sought for their beauty with gifts of oxen, dancing, and holding hands at the wrist" (Il., 18.590–594). In fact, the majority of the shield depicts common Greek life; this being a quality that distinguishes Achilles' shield from those of other famous warriors and heroes. Epics and their heroes usually involve gods and god–like feats, which are still true in the Iliad, yet the engravings on this shield are an oxymoron of that style. Edwards best describes this in stating, "Like an enormous simile, the scenes on the shield hold the narrative still for a while as we gaze at them; and the content is like that of a simile, too – it is the ordinary life of mankind that we observe, not that of heroes or gods" (278). The shield is unique for the engravings it bears on its surface, however, its greater significance lies in what it represents, especially to Achilles' being. At her son's birth, Thetis knew that Zeus had fated Achilles to die if he spilled Hector's blood. Despite warning him of this, Thetis could not sway her son's decision to avenge Patrocles and kill Hector. Therefore, it is known from this point on that Achilles would soon die. Once he puts on the new armor, Achilles accepts his impending doom, and even accepts it earlier as he speaks to his mother, saying, 'I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The pain is everywhere but mostly from his left shoulder, flaring intensely to a consistent rhythm. The darkness is worse though as it threatens to surround and engulf him, pulling him back down into the void. He struggles to break free from it's grip and after a seemingly endless period of internal struggle a small dot of light appears before him. Mericc focuses all of his will on it, forcing it to stretch until it is a thin line on the horizon. The worst of it though was the way his father would use the shield to push and prod him in whichever direction he wanted too. Finally his father feinted another arcing attack with his shield and Mericc dodged then found his father's sword at his chest. Hawk eyes glared hard at Mericc who withered before their intensity. "Anything is a weapon in the hands of the well trained Mericc,' his father said. "A shield is a weapon, a castle is a weapon, even words are weapons. Never forget this." Mericc nodded in pennance. "You were wrong on the second point as well," his father continued. • 65. The And The Shield Of Faith In verse the last verse, we find the last piece of the armor, the shield of faith. We can see that for Paul, this is an important part of the armor by how he introduces this piece of armor and the words that follow it. As with all the previous pieces of the armor, the word following shield is specially important to know of what this shield consists of and what it does. It is pretty clear in this one, that faith is what protects us from the devil. However, here it is important to specify what faith is protecting us. "To speak of faith is not to focus on human belief, but on the faithfulness of God. What protects us from the arrows of the evil one."(Snodgrass, 343). Snodgrass says this shield protects us from the arrows of the evil ones recalling that in the time when the text was written, shields were used to protect soldiers from the burning arrows of the enemy. But Paul is actually talking about the attacks of the spiritual forces of the evil. So what Paul is saying in this verse, is that the faithfulness of God will protect the believers from any attack from the evil. "Be strong, alert and ready"(Snodgrass, 354), these are some of the theological principles that we find in Ephesians. More specifically, we can find these three in Ephesians 6:10–16. God wants us to be strong, and he is willing to provide us with the strength of his spirit. However, recall that this is something that we are not given when we are born. What Makes A Personal Essay About Becoming A Warrior Becoming a Warrior Recently, I have come to the conclusion that every trial in life is simply a battle contained within the life–long war we all must fight. That being said, it is logical to assume that those with the most powerful weapons will have the easiest lives. The natural human thought process leads to the question, "How do I gain said weapons?" Surprisingly, creating a cache of impressive weaponry is not as difficult as one may believe. After surveying the First Better Business Bureau's list of UncommonSense Principles, I realized that every single object I needed to be successful in life was right under my nose. Therefore, when I lost my best friend this past summer, I went straight to my arms cabinet to find the best weapons to prepare me for battle. I came to the front lines armed with three UncommonSense principles: a helmet of courage, a sword of maturity, and a shield of forgiveness. It is with these weapons in hand that I was ready to face the toughest battle that life has thrown at me to date. I suppose I must begin at the beginning, which is ... • 69. Australian Shield Laws With more and more wealthy Australians bringing journalists and publishers to court to demand the revelation of sources shield laws are becoming increasingly important. Shield laws can be defined as an array of laws that offer protection to journalists or other communicators who otherwise face a disobedient contempt charge for refusing to reveal a confidential source. In particular, with the introduction of shield laws in Western Australia journalists' professional ethics have taken priority over the demands of the law. Although these shield laws provide some protection for journalists and their informants in WA there are still some weaknesses in terms of how these laws are interpreted in court. Furthermore, shield laws are significant in maintaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In particular, sustaining the right to protect sources. These ethics are important to journalists as it creates this trust between contacts and journalists allowing for significant public interest stories to break. This can be depicted in the case mentioned before between Steve Pennells and Gina Rinehart. When Pennells won this case Justice Pritchard outlined that the disclosure of the source would constitute a breach of a fundamental ethical obligation of journalists' to not disclose sources. This judgement was encouraging for journalists as it defended the importance of their ethical obligations, specifically the right to protect sources and the right for sources to trust journalists with information they gave them confidentially. Without this trust between journalists' and sources many public interest stories would not arise as it means that sources with genuine public interest concerns about corruption and abuses of power will think twice before contacting a journalist. They would also not arise due to journalists' fears of either having to reveal confidential information or face dire consequences for not disclosing these private details. This can be portrayed in 2012 as Fairfax journalists, Nick Mckenzie, Richard Baker and Philip Dorling were ordered by the NSW Supreme Court to reveal to a Chinese–Australian businesswoman their confidential sources for a series of stories on her relationship with a federal Labor MP. To expand on this story further The Age published two articles alleging Ms Liu paid Joel Fitzgibbon $150,000 as part of ''a campaign to cultivate him as an agent of political and business influence''. • 71. Shield Of Achilles Hope often contrasts with reality, especially within Greek mythology or similar replications. For instance, The Shield of Achilles is written by W.H. Auden in the form of a ekphrasis and details the content on the Shield of Achilles; The Shield of Achilles juxtaposes the idea of hope portrayed by Thetis versus reality shown through Hephaestus (further referenced as Hep). The speaker in The Shield of Achilles is blunt in showing Thetis' imagery of tranquility, peace and liveliness in comparison to Hep´s imagery of actuality, war and idleness. Tranquility often becomes contradicted by what is happening in actuality. As shown in the first four lines of the poem, the speaker´s attitude is blunt; which is seen when "She looked over his shoulder for vines and olive trees, marble well–governed cities and ships upon untamed seas"(Lines 1–4). These lines are straight to the point in showing that Thetis looked over Hep's shoulder and was looking for three things. Thetis, Greek mother of Achilles instructed Hep´s, Greek god of blacksmiths to make her son a shield with certain items on it. Thetis wanted things that showed tranquility and items that represented the reverenced aspect of Greek culture. These items show imagery of Greece being calm and undisturbed, another things that can be inferred is Thetis, being a mother and only wanting the best things for Achilles including his safety in a calm city. These items are juxtaposed with actuality when Hephaestus has done the complete opposite of what Thetis has instructed. Hephaestus created "on the shining metal, his hands had put instead an artificial wilderness and a sky like lead"(Lines 5–8). A shift occurs when Hep places the reality of what the Greeks are facing, which is a place that is becoming altered by man. He also chooses to place what he wants to place on the shield, instead of what Thetis has instructed him place. Negative diction also occurs when the speaker uses a world like artificial which usually has a negative connotation that often indicates fakeness, as well as a sky instead of being blue and happy is dark heavy metal. Peace, a time of quietness once again ruined by threats of a war occurring. Thetis again "looked over his shoulder for ritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shield Of Achilles And The Iliad "[Thetis] look over [Hephaestus'] shoulder for vines and olive trees, marble well–governed cities and ships upon untamed seas, but...instead [saw] an artificial wilderness and a sky like lead" ("The Shield of Achilles" 1–8). In the poem, "The Shield of Achilles," by W.H. Auden, and the epic poem, The Iliad, by Homer, the shield forged for Achilles is portrayed in two very differing ways. "The Shield of Achilles" is a poem authored by W.H. Auden that depicts the forging of Achilles' shield by Hephaestus as recorded in Book 18 of The Iliad. The poem exhibits Thetis watching Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths, forge the shield which will be delivered to Achilles as he is returning to combat.
