Positive Principles Of Confucianism
To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must
put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must cultivate our personal life; and to
cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right.
(Confucius)
The words above belong to Confucius, who was one of the most respected philosophers of all time.
He founded a social and political system of philosophy, and transmitted his ideas to a group of
disciplines. His teachings were later collected in a book known as the "Analects" by his followers.
Confucius is arguably the most influential person in Chinese history, and the effects of his teachings
still remain today. In short, Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and political ... Show more content

For example, he cared much about being respectful and loyal to one's parents. Also, he defended that
women must be obedient towards their husband, and men must protect their wives. Another
Confucian family ritual is to value children, and to care about the word of the elderly women in
family. These are the examples of Confucian family rituals, and these rituals were already existed in
Chinese family system before Confucius, too. Confucius expressed these traditions in a clear and
impressive way. As a result of this, the Confucian family rituals have reached up to the present day ,
and they are still being complied today. Women and men are still expected to be respectful and
protective, children are still highly valued, and elderly are still powerful within in the family today
in China. In conclusion, the family system of China today was organized by Confucius, and his
teachings of family rituals are the rituals that has been used before Confucius, by the time of

Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism
In ancient China, many different rulers tried to unify and rule the country using a variety of methods
– Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism to name a few. Each philosophy had its own set of rules of
how people should act both in public and privately. The overall goal of each philosophy was to set a
standard of acceptable living that would ensure harmony and success for the society. However, each
was different and thus had different results. The best way for the people of China to succeed in a
harmonious, respectable society occurred when both Confucianism and Legalism were combined.
Confucianism resulted from a Chinese philosopher named Kongfuzi (551–479 B.C.E), also known
as Confucius, becoming disheartened with the way the government ... Show more content on

If there is dissent and it is not dealt with using corrective measures, then the government, and
thereby society, will fall apart. One such example of this can be found in the Han Feizi document. It
says, "The law alone leads to political order. If laws are adjusted to the time, there is good
government. If government fits the age, there will be great accomplishment. Therefore, when the
people are naïve, if you regulate them with fame, there will be good government; when everybody
in the world is intelligent, if you discipline them with penalties, they will obey. While time is
moving on, if laws do not shift accordingly, there will be misrule; while abilities are divers, if
prohibitions are not changed, the state will be dismembered...Indeed, if the state is orderly, the
people are safe; if affairs are confused, the country falls into peril...Yet everybody's likes and
dislikes should be regulated by the superior."
It is no surprise that the "philosophy" of legalism did not last long. Once the emperor died, people
began to dissent and voice their opinions of being treated in such a manner. The next emperor,
Emperor Gaozu of the Early Han Dynasty, determined that by combining Confucianism and
Legalism would ensure a more accepted and obeyed political system. By allowing the people to
follow certain rules that prescribed their status obligations while altering the laws created by
Legalism, the society ran more smoothly for

Confucianism : Taoism, Confucianism, And Confucianism

Which philosophy: Taoism, Confucianism, or Legalism would be best in your opinion for
maintaining a peaceful society? Why? Perhaps there is no single philosophy that can create a truly
peaceful society. The conundrum of choosing a philosophy to embody a peaceful society is rather
complicated, as the ideologies of the philosophies often differ greatly from their real world
application. Debates over ideologies can create global scale problems. Present day, countries even
conquer and subjugate to spread and force their ideologies upon others. Although Taoism,
Confucianism, and Legalism all ideologically can create a peaceful society, I believe that while
Taoism and Confucianism create a better ideal for peace, Legalism is the best option for maintaining
a peaceful society when faced with the realities of human nature. Ideologically I believe
Confucianism and Taoism to be perfectly viable beliefs to maintain a peaceful society. The founder
of Confucianism, Confucius, looked upon his current China with dismay, "greed, insincerity,
irresponsibility, callous disregard for others' needs and interest. And committed himself to trying to
inspire people to do good." (Ebrey, 42) His moral philosophy entailed discipline to become 'learned
men,' rituals and ceremonies for ones own ancestors, and above all else filial piety. (Ebrey, 42)
These beliefs lead Confucius to mold Confucianism into a peaceful philosophy that when

Taoism And Confucianism
When the government structure in China fell apart creating chaos emerged two major religions,
Taoism and Confucianism. These two roles played a big part during this time to get things back in
order. The difference between both religions is how they believed the structure should be. Taoism
was not into much of the government. They believe the least the government the better. Lao–tzu
who is the founder of Taoism is known for saying "Govern a great nation as you would cook a small
fish" – do not overdo it (p. 180). By doing so, they will live a simple quiet life. In Confucianism,
their belief is much different. The Confucians believe in a big government with an order. Confucius,
the founder of Confucianism, believed if society lived by "Li", ... Show more content on

As an infant, his parents sent him into the sea for safety. He was rescued by the daughter of the
pharaoh of Egypt (p. 245). The difference with Moses was raised in a royal family not born into one.
This stood out to me for the fact that both came from different classes of a family with a purpose in
life. It shows you do not have to be wealthy to have a purpose in life.
Another thing both Moses and Zoroaster had in common was they were both called by God at an
older age to find out their purpose in life. At a crucial time in Zoroaster's life, he had a vision of
Vohu Mana an archangel who appeared in the size of a man. He was told there is only "one true
God, Ahura Mazda" and he would become a prophet. This archangel continued to appear to
Zoroaster several more times as he continued to preach the revelation of Ahura Mazda (p. 227). Like
Zoroaster, Moses was in a crucial part in his life after being exiled to the Sinai Desert for killing an
Egyptian in self–defense when the God of Abraham appeared to him. The difference is God revealed
himself to Moses speaking through a burning bush. God commanded Moses to return to Egypt and
free the Israelites from slavery. God continued guiding Moses to freedom. This stood out to me
because I am familiar with this story and learned more about it.
Finally, there are the beliefs of the souls after death. Both Zoroastrianism and Judaism believe the
souls go to a place after they leave the body.

Confucius And Confucianism
Confucius's philosophical teachings about government and society discussed in the Analects revolve
around morality and how a ruler and his people should act in order to stabilize society. Confucius
looked to the past to discuss the problems of the present by modeling his teachings from the former
Zhou empire. Confucius sought to bring back the Zhou traditions in order to better society. By
linking moral behaviors to social roles and hierarchies, he emphasized that the stability of the
government and society was directly correlated to the relationship between the ruler and the people.
With the title "Son of Heaven," the ruler was expected to act morally towards his subjects and treat
them with love and concern ("Introduction to Confucian Thought", 2009). This idea is directly
related to the concept of ren, which discusses the well–being of others as the moral drive of society.
He extended this idea into social harmony, being first and foremost embedded in the family.
Confucius believed that the virtue of filial piety was the foundation for not just family life but also
had implication for the ruler–subject bond ("Mencius and his development of Confucian teachings",
n.d.). Similarly, Mencius centered his teachings on this idea by stressing that the well–being of the
family directly corresponded to the well–being of the state. Most importantly however, Confucius
also discussed the importance of the ruler ruling over the people with virtue, which was achieved
through ritual

Contributions Of Confucianism
Confucius was a great Chinese philosopher, but he was also a teacher, editor, and politician. He was
born on September 28, 551 BC, and died in 479 BC. He was most well known as Confucius, but his
real name is Kong Qiu. After his death, Confucianism became the official imperial philosophy of
China. Later after his death, he was regarded as a sage who deserved greater recognition, and his
teachings became more popular. He accomplished many great things in his life, and died a
successful man. Confucius envisioned a type of government where people strived to succeed. He
thought that how you go about trying to achieve something, is more important that actually

Confucius said, "The progress of the superior man is upwards." He wanted their leaders to better
their government, so he took control, and told the leaders how they should act. Teaching leaders how
to behave was important to Confucius, because he wanted to bring order to society, and he wanted
good people who could do that. He wanted the rulers to not be cruel anymore. Confucius said, "The
man, who in the view of gain, thinks of righteousness; who in the view of danger is prepared to give
up his life; and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends:– such a man may
be reckoned a complete man." This was his real idea of a good leader. Confucius did not want the
leader to be selfish, and he wanted them to keep true to their word. His opinion was that the superior
man's words should never be incorrect. He wanted the leaders to be truthful to the people, and not
tell them lies. Another thing Confucius thought made a good leader was when someone who is in
conduct of himself maintains a sense of shame, and does not disgrace his prince's commission,
deserves to be called an officer. This means that he thought if a man had these qualities, he was
considered a good officer. He thought good leaders should maintain order by making sure what he
said was carried out appropriately, as it is said in the Analects. He also said that in intercourse with
others, be strictly sincere. Confucius did not want

Piety In Confucianism
In truth, filial piety, humaneness and reciprocity are three main ideas, which plays very important
role in Confucianism. To begin with, Confucius is a famous philosopher who gave advices to the
rulers and individuals on their behaviors. Worth to mention, Confucius's teachings were complied in
the Analects after his death. Moreover, Filial Piety means respect for one's parents, and most people
is familiar with that idea in Confucianism. From what I learnt in China, filial is the starting point of
virtue. In addition, I think filial piety is necessary in a family, and the children should show the
respect to their parents. Another importance virtue is reciprocity, which means one should reply
what another person has provided. Furthermore, reciprocity

A Short History of Confucianism
Confucianism is a way of life propagated by the Chinese philosopher Confucius in the 6th–5th
century BCE, and it has been followed by the Chinese for more than 2000 years. Although
Confucianism as changed over time, at its core, it is still places the same emphasis on the substance
of learning, the source of values, and the social code of the Chinese. Additionally, the influence of
Confucianism has extended to other countries such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
While Confucianism is sometimes viewed as a philosophy or religion, Confucianism is probably
best understood as a sort of all–encompassing way of thinking and living, which includes such
practices as: ancestor reverence and human–centered religiousness over that of the environment.
While people all over Asia can argue that they are Shintoists, Daoists, Buddhists, Muslims, or
Christians, but, by announcing their religious affiliations, very rarely do they stop practicing a
Confucian way of life in addition to their religious affiliation.
Although Confucianism is often grouped with the major historical religions, Confucianism differs
from them in that it is not an organized religion. Regardless of this fact, Confucianism has spread to
other East Asian countries under the influence of Chinese literate culture and has exerted a huge
influence on their spiritual, cultural, and political life. Both the theory and practice of

Christianity And Confucianism : Confucianism
Christianity and Confucianism Christianity and Confucianism are important religions today at least
according to the Chinese. As a result, the rising influence brought about by Confucianism in China
tends to trigger conflicts between the two religions. The Chinese society is greatly influenced by
Confucianism, which has a considerable impact on Christianity as a religion in China. The modes of
thinking associated with Confucianism are evident in the Chinese Christianity, but Confucianism
ideas are deeply rooted in the lives of the Chinese. There is an increased rivalry and tension between
these major belief systems as a result of the religion revival and the growth associated with
Confucianism and Christianity in China (Lee & Ruhe, 1999). Confucianism has been manipulated in
China by the Communist Party to its own benefits. This is evident through the perception of
Christianity as a Western scheme and a threat to take over the cultural identity of China. As a result,
the interactions between Christians and Confucianism are characterized by hostility and distrust. The
challenge facing China at the moment is their ability to witness effectively in the emerging
pluralistic society.
Confucianism marks a major presence in China today as a result of the signs that demonstrate its
growth. This ranges from prominent symbols to Confucian schools. Despite Confucianism
comprising religious elements, it has little articulation regarding supernatural beings and life beyond
death. It

The Cores Of Confucianism
Introduction
From the 6th century to 221 BC, the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States period, the
Ancient China experienced a lengthy chaos. Nonetheless, in such bloody era, the brilliant Chinese
philosophers sprang up and started a Golden Age of philosophy. People call this phenomenon as the
Contention of a Hundred schools of Thoughts. The philosophers discussed about the best way for a
country to survive, for an emperor to rule and for people to live. Those thoughts impacted the
lifestyle and social consciousness not only at that time but even in the following thousands of years,
especially for the Confucianism which was exclusively adopted in Han dynasty and rule the China

Confucianism And Daoism Essay
Confucianism and Daoism affected the social structure of early China through culture, education,
and government though the effects varied greatly between these two beliefs. Culture in China is
different due to the teachings of Confucianism that began when Confucius was age twenty three, as
well as the teachings of Daoism because both teachings believed in harmony and living tranquilly.
Education was shaped by Daoism and Confucianism for the reason that Confucians believed
everyone should be educated while Daosits thought it was irrelevant. Since Confucius lived in a
time of political unrest from 551 to 478 B.C.E., he worked to gain political stability whereas the
Daosits were indifferent on that issue.
Culture was impacted by Daoism and Confucianism because the teachings that were proclaimed,
breached on the topic of living a harmonious life filled with respect for one another. Confucianism
especially stressed the idea of reverence towards an older person. With this mentality, it is almost as
if adults are never to be at fault. Fathers were supposed to be revered and loved by the children.
Though Daoism had a certain set of ethics and appealed more to the higher class, both religions
promoted a nonviolent life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Legalism And Confucianism
Confucianism, together with Mohism and Legalism, is three out of the four main philosophical
teachings in ancient China. Chinese philosophers such as Confucius, Mo Tzu, and Han Fei Tzu had

Confucius; as for Han Feizi he took a totally different approach. The three books written by each
philosopher, the Analects, the Mozi and the Han Feizi each discuss how power should be manifested

According to Mo Tzu, the concept of universality is a way to prevent a power imbalance. He urged
that all people follow Heaven in this by practicing universal love. Mo Tzu believed that all were
equal before the lord of the heavens. Mo Tzu saw Heaven and associated that with God. God being
someone who loves all people no matter their class or ethnicity. Also, he believed if God loves
everyone equally, people should strive to love one another in the same manner. He believed that the
powers of heaven acted on the world and exercised a love for all humankind. It is stated, "The
principle of universality is the way of the sage kings, the means of bringing safety to the rulers and
officials and of assuring ample food and clothing to the people... It is the way of the sage kings and
great benefit to the people." (The Mozi, 49) His standard of action is strictly based on utility; love
for all human beings is demonstrated by satisfying their immediate material needs and by
abandoning all forms of activity and expense that do not contribute to the feeding, clothing and
housing of the people. He spoke of the value of the labor of common folks, and he advocated
promoting people to positions of power solely on the strength of their abilities and virtues. It is
taught that it is necessary to recognize that to balance power is that people should not prioritize
partially, but universally. With his "Universal Love" philosophy, he specified that a government
would have no need to attack or have a war with another state. By not having war between each
other there would be peace, and it would stimulate the economy by saving money. This would
benefit everyone especially commoners because it will eliminate their suffering, but also just all

Confucianism In China
Confucianism is a belief system of thoughts taught by Confucius in China during the 5th and 6th
century BCE during the Zhou dynasty. During this time, China was dealing with serious political
conflicts, moral chaos, and intellectual conflict and order were almost non–existent. During this
political struggle, Confucius believed that going back to the "traditional ways" was the only path for
society to get back on track and developed his thought into what is known as Confucianism. It has
existed for over two millennia and has changed over time. Some people refer to Confucianism as
philosophy while others view it as a religion. Confucianism is a belief system which can be

Tenets Of Confucianism

tenets that occupied the philosophy of China. Five tenets will be analyzed to show the Confucian
relationship across various military texts. The philosophy of Confucianism permeates throughout the
Chinese history and society beginning with Han Wudi's reign. Confucian influence found within the
texts of the military doctrine. The Confucians pushed for "diplomacy to resolve foreign policy
conflicts." Pacifism, as Edmund Ryden states, is not the tenet found in the books however peace is

Confucianism can be found once more in this strategy as the goal was to kill as few people as
possible, since the goal of warfare wasn't to kill people. Sun–tzu favored a primary objective of
subjugating other states without fighting thus diplomatic coercion was the idea method. He stressed
avoiding prolonged warfare. He wrote, "Thus the army values being victorious; it does not value
prolonged warfare." This meant maximizing the results with minimum destruction that is inflicted.
The writers like Wei Liao–tzu focused on speed, deception, concentration of force, assaulting weak
points while avoiding strengths as strategic ways of forcing the opponent to acquiesce. Brute force
warfare was disdain for a maneuver that provided a quick end to a conflict thus achieving the
desired goals without excess killing.
Confucian ideals permeate through the military texts and the five tenets analyzed as examples of the
relationship between the military texts and Confucianism. The writers of these texts were bound

Comparing Confucianism And Daoism
Confucianism and Daoism have influenced China for many centuries with conflicting and agreeing
ideas. Confucianism consist of the very famous texts called "The Analects" and one very famously
known as 'Mengzi" named after its writer. Similarly, the Daoists also have important text, such as
the "Daodejing" which are compartmentalized into different sections. Differing in texts is a minimal
distinction; Confucianism and Daoism differ in what their main concepts are. First, Confucianism
focused on filial piety and benevolence (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Kong Fuzi was very concerned with
how one presented his or herself to the public due to geomancy. One also had to respect one's elders
in order to promote social hierarchy, which meant it would essentially keep the entire universe in
order. Furthermore, Kong Fuzi believed that if social order were to be perfected then it would mimic
that of the Dao, putting one closer to Heaven (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Following xiào is also known

Mengzi And Confucianism
One of the oldest philosophies in Chinese history is Confucianism. At the time of the warring states,
Confucius wandered throughout China seeking a ruler who accepted the Confucian way. Since then,
his ideas grew and are still relevant today. Throughout time other philosophers, Mengzi and Xunzi,
have interpreted Confucius' teachings and have long debated whether human nature is good or bad. I
argue that human nature is not, as Mengzi believes, inherently good, instead, completely self–
interested.
The Confucian philosopher, Mengzi, asserts that humans have instincts by nature that tend toward
goodness. Meaning, because human have virtuous instincts, human nature is good. Within his
philosophy, Mengzi claims that humans have four sprouts; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is "kill or be killed, eat or be eaten," (London) because the cold, the wind, the snow, does not care
about the wellbeing of man, nor understand humans needs to survive. So, when Mengzi uses
metaphors depicting nature as a whole and glorious thing, I disagree. Mengzi believes that nature is
good and therefore human nature is good, yet nature is actually savage. Almost all of Jack London's
novels describe the ruthlessness of nature describing nature laughing, "a laughter that was mirthless
as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility"
(London). Nature is teasing people and pulling them into the brutal wild. If nature does not care
about humans and is ruthless, then human nature is the same way. Humans have instincts which help
them survive; that is human nature. This is the reason the human race has conquered the globe.
Unlike what Mengzi believes, just like the wild, human's brains are hardwired to survive, and our
actions are completely self–interested.
With the example of the child falling into the well, Mengzi asserts that our impulse to save the child
stems from human's sprout of compassion. However, I agree with Hobbes that "[w]arre, where every
man is Enemy to every man," (Schwitzgebel) and the only reason human's instinct to save, is
because our brains are hard–wired to keep the human race living. It is evolutionary biology that
people started to believe babies and small things were cute, and

Is Confucianism A Religion?
Is Confucianism A Religion?
Without a doubt, Confucius is regarded as one of the greatest sages of China history. Some people
even refer to him as a deity. There have even been attempts to make Confucianism into a religion.
However, present day people regard Confucius as an ethical teacher rather than a man of religious
faith, and they refuse to believe that Confucianism is a religion. However, in order to determine
whether Confucianism is a religion, the most important Confucian text, The Analects, must be
analyzed to decide whether his teachings were rationally humanistic or based on religion and
divinity.
Throughout The Analects, it appears evident that there are aspects that seem metaphysical and
beliefs that seem religious. One idea of religion that appears to be in The Analects is the idea of fate.
This belief in fate suggested that Confucius had some belief in a supreme deity. Throughout The
Analects, Confucius reveals many times this sign of divine commission. In Book VII, it quotes,
"The Master said, 'Heaven is author of the virtue that is in me. What can Huan T'ui do to me?'"
(Analects 89). Then in Book XIV, this idea is mentioned again, "The Master said, 'It is Destiny if the
Way prevails, it is equally Destiny if the Way falls into disuse. What can Kung–po Liao do in
defiance of Destiny?'"(Analects 130). Furthermore in Book IX, the Analects refer to fate of the
entire society, when it quotes "the Master said, 'With King Wen dead, is not culture

Confucianism Research Paper
Confucianism Research Project Confucianism has easily been influential in the development of the
Chinese state through history. In fact, the core ideals of Confucianism have evolved. Despite the
harsh repression of Confucianism by Marxist revolutionaries during the second half of the twentieth
century, Confucian values continues to be influential in Chinese society and recently, Confucian
political philosophy has resurfaced again. In addition, the political ideas and social ethics of
Confucianism can provide the basis for a new, functional form of government in China.

absolute obedience of elders and strict subjugation of women to men, during the Ming and Qing
dynasties. Furthermore, the Marxist revolutionary government of Communist China dealt with
Confucianism negatively. "In the early 20th century, both before and after the fall of the Qing
dynasty, Confucianism was harshly criticized by the New Culture Movement. (Adler 6)" The
assumption of this movement was that "virtually everything about China's traditional culture was
holding it back from becoming a modern nation–state." In fact, Confucianism was high on the list of
culprits in this "blanket rejection" of traditional China. "The New Culture Movement criticized
Confucianism for its age and gender–based hierarchies, which had become quite rigid during the
Ming and Qing dynasties. Communist thinkers also joined this anti–Confucian trend, so by the time
of the Communist victory in 1949 Confucianism in mainland China seemed virtually dead. (Adler

their professed opposition to social hierarchies, they viewed Confucianism as a feudal ideology.

Buddhism And Confucianism Similarities
Buddhism and Confucianism have many features that are alike and many features that are different.
Confucianism and Buddhism had different importance and values. But, they both had many similar
ideas.
Buddhism and Confucianism were very different from each other. One reason is Buddhism's creator
was Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. While Confucianism was created by Confucius. Another
reason is Buddhism and Confucianism had different goals. The goal of Buddhism was to reach
nirvana. Nirvana means the perfect state of peace. Confucianism's goal was to make sure there was
respect, social harmony, and proper roles on society. Confucianism was all about respect. Buddhism
was all about peace. Buddhism meditated and fasted, while Confucianism followed

ritualization is that there is much attention to external "protocol" aspects of ritual. Of course,
"ceremonity" during official events is not an element of only Korean culture, however, it is quite
noticeable that Korean pay a lot of attention to such kind of elements. The combination of hierarchy

Explain The Roots Of Confucianism
In this essay, I'll discuss the founders of Confucianism and why it was introduced to the Chinese
people as a belief they should follow. I'll explain all three founders' main theories and the effect it
had on Confucianism as a whole. I'll also examine why Confucianism was brought in by the Han
Dynasty. Confucianism is the "system of ethics, education and statesmanship taught by Confucius
and his disciples." [1] It's also dedicated to the study of mankind, making it a form of humanism.
Confucianism, as a whole, is a faith that holds much hope for civilisation and is very optimistic in
it's' teachings.

Mencius vs Hsun Tzu
Is man naturally good or is he evil? This question has not only been pondered by countless
philosophers, but also by religious leaders around the world. Most often a single religious faith
believes in either one or the other, and often these beliefs tend to create a certain world–view which
dictates much of the faith. However, in some cases such as the one I will be discussing, two
religious dignitaries do not agree and the repercussions of this can be found throughout the religion.
The two men are Mencius, an early pupil of Confucius and Hsun Tzu, a later follower of the same
faith. Mencius believed that each man, born of woman, would be naturally good and Hsun Tzu ...

Not much is known about Mencius or Hsun Tzu, but some basic information stirs around various
interpretations of their works. Mencius was found to be one of the most important pupils of
Confucius, he continued his work and added many new outlooks and clarity to some of
Confucius’ teachings. Hsun Tzu, on the other hand, was a very well journeyed man. He
had been surrounded by war, involved in politics and had a much greater variety of experience than
that of Mencius or Confucius. Hsun Tzu came be a few years after Mencius’ death and
put a spin on Confucian beliefs and ideas. The difference in their beliefs is where the faith is
defined, through the teachings of Mencius and Hsun Tzu a large problem arose. This problem was
their views on human nature. Their differing ideas came to shape Confucianism into what it is today,
and their differing world–views can explain a lot about their teachings.
When dealing with these two ideas, we must first decipher what is meant by “nature'; in
the sense that Mencius and Hsun Tzu discuss. They are calling nature all the abilities that man is
born with, the instincts which make a man human. Gut feelings, emotions and passions that are
instilled in every human being from the moment of their conception. And finally a world–view is, as
philosophers would call it, an idea with which other ideas are based. An idea which influences basic
decision making and

Confucianism and Taoism are some of the major religions in China. They have greatly influenced
the culture of the Chinese people as well as their world view. The connection between the two
religions has influenced many people over time. It can also be said that when the principles of both
philosophies are put together, the outcome is a well–rounded person. The following is a discussion
of the principles and philosophies behind these two religions as well as how the two religions
interact and connect to influence an individual.
Confucianism is a religion that bases its philosophy and principles on the teachings of Confucius, a
Chinese philosopher who lived between 551 and 478 BC. The Philosophy behind Confucianism is

Knowledge means to appreciate the true and deep significance of something. Integrity on the other
hand means honesty and standing by one's words.
Taoism is a Chinese religious tradition that stresses the importance of living harmoniously with the
essence and source of all that exists or the Tao. In Chinese, Tao means the path, way or principle but
it can also mean nature or reality. In Taoism, the right path is working in harmony with nature or
reality. Taoism ethics stress the three jewels of the Tao which include moderation, compassion and
humility. The philosophy of Taoism centers on nature and how human beings should relate with the
cosmos. Inner fulfillment can be achieved through contemplation of nature. Nature is like a stream
of wisdom and by experiencing it through innocent eyes, we can internalize its pleasantness, its
intrigue and its excitement and make serenity.
There are four fundamental principles in Taoism including Tao, De, Pu and Wu wei. Tao in Taoism
is the natural, spontaneous, eternal and indescribable way everything began and took course. It is the
force that is behind natural order, the natural flow of the universe or that which keeps the universe
ordered and balanced. De on the other hand is the integrity, virtue and power that are an active
expression of the way or Tao. It is the living out or cultivation of the way. Wu wei, the third

Confucianism
A philosopher named Confucius founded Confucianism in China 2,500 years ago. Confucianism is a
system of ethical behavior and social responsibility that became the great traditions of the East.1 It
played an important role in the evolution in Chinese culture over the centuries. It has influenced
near–by countries and had made a mark in the history of religion. There are today over six million
people who call themselves Confucianists. Most Confucianists live in East Asia where
Confucianism is thought to be born. For over two thousand years, Confucianism has been the
dominant philosophical system of Chinese government, which has still a great hold on their people.

Throughout his governmental career, he was promoted several times. Later he became Grand
Secretary of Justice and, at age 56, he became Chief Minister of Lu. Because of Confucius?
increasing power, many nearby countries became worried that Lu would over power them. They
sent messengers with gifts and dancers to distract the Duke during a sacrifice holiday and the Duke
later abounded his duties. When Confucius received word of this, he resigned and left the country.
Confucius spent the next five years of his life wandering China with his disciples until he was able
to send messenger to the sympathetic king of a nearby country, who sent his own band of soldiers to
rescue them 2. At the age of 67, Confucius returned to Lu where he spent the rest of his years
teaching until he died at 72.
Teachings The teaching of Confucius still has a great effect on the culture of China today. His
followers wrote down all of his teachings after his death and have been translated into many
different languages so that the entire world may benefit from them. Below are some examples from
the Analects, Book 4.

All of these different systems and philosophies highly emphasize: the harmony between people, the
benevolence that one must have, filial piety, loyalty, righteousness, and courtesy for a successful and
healthy society. Even though they all have a different idea, their goal is the same. The morality and
ethics of human behaviors were also part of the teachings that shaped the culture of today. Even
though the goals of these philosophies were similar, like their beliefs about man and society; their
ideas were a little bit different and each had their own focus. The difference in focus between
Confucianism and Taoism is that Confucianism was focused on having a structured society. It held

The Tao is the unknown, powerful force to which the whole world and universe flows. It is the
ultimate reality and that everything is one despite the differences in appearances. They believed that
life is good, there was an emphasis on the body, and the goal was to gain balance in life. They had a
good view on women. They were generally equal to men and highly spoken of in the teachings.
Taoism believes in the concept of the Yin and the Yang. This concept is that two halves, two
opposites, make a whole. It is a balance, equilibrium of wholeness. The Yin is the dark side, while
the Yang is the light side. We can see this balance every day in life. Like the day and the night, a
man and a woman. There cannot be one without the other. Absence of light creates darkness;
absence of heat makes it cold. When there are beautiful things, the ugly ones come out. And when
there is good, there is also bad. One thing defines and complements the other. They coexist by
opposing each other. Yet, nothing is completely Yang and nothing is completely Yin. One is the
starting point of the other. They are interdependent to be complete. When one increases, the other
one decreases. This is how they maintain the overall balance.
Mohism, on the other hand, was rival to Confucianism and Daoism. He was too liberal to agree to
all the social rules that Confucius had created. He did not agree either with the importance of
tradition or rituals of Confucianism.

Taoism And Confucianism
Taoism also spelled Daoism and Confucianism are both ancient religions of Chinese, as well as their
style of living. Taoism is known to be a philosophical as well as a religious tradition that started in
China in 400 B.C., but most of the central ideas, as well as values, began around 1100 to 1200 B.C.(
Cline, 2017). The religion has had a lot of influence on Chinese as well as other East Asia, on art,
literature, medicine, philosophy as well as religion. The word Tao means road or way, which means
"way of life" (Voorst, 2013). Founded by Lao Tzu, which the name means "Old Master", but some
historians say that there is no real evidence that Lao ever existed. It is also said that he may have just
stayed hidden so people would wonder about him. He was also known to be an older contemporary
of Confucius, which both are said to be a disappointed government official that become a wandering
teacher (Voorst, 2013).
Confucianism is also a philosophical religion that is based on the beliefs as well as ideas of a
Chinese philosopher named Confucius, which lived in or around the time of 551 or 479 B.C. (Cline,
2017). The values and ideas of the religion Confucianism started in the times of the Western Zhou
dynasty in China. This religion was the most important force in the Chinese culture. Like Taoism,
Confucianism has also influenced art, as well as other areas, such as education, government,
literature, personal behavior, as well as philosophy (Cline, 2017).

According to Confucius, each person should act with virtue in all social matters; family, community,
state, and kingdom, to ensure order and unity. Man's virtue in all its forms is called "ren" which
would make sense but Daoism does not make much sense the ideology in which the ideal ruler and
government do not interfere in the lives of the people and lead them to prosperity of primitive
simplicity by nonaction and focuses on intuitive spontaneity. It is civilization that has corrupted
humanity from its early state of innocence but realistically as a person or society lives and ages there
is no such thing as innocence as one must grow and learn. The sage practices nonaction, gives up
worldly ambitions, and lives a simple life in accord with nature though that one does. The dedication
to right relationships and a solid social order contrast directly with the inner direct intuition of
Taoism. While both philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism may end up with the same result in
having a healthy society, one is taught and can culminate in results while the other is impeded by
environmental variables and through inaction and exclusiveness may cause more

Confucianism And Early Daoism
1. This question could be problematic in the sense that the religions in China don't have a specific
God that they believe in nor do they not believe in God entirely. In classic Chinese the spirits and
deities (Shen) were human but only became deities once they died and go into the existing
hierarchy. (5–7, 8) While Confucianism is human based and early Daoism is based on "the entire
cosmos and all its workings"; this helps draw the conclusion that "religion easily shades into the
realms of medicine, astronomy, philosophy, government and more." (7–3 & 5–1)

Confucianism, Taoism, And Confucianism
In Chinese history, there were three main philosophies: Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. These
beliefs helped shape Chinese culture as well as Chinese history. Not only did people believe in these
ideas, but the three helped to govern the mighty Chinese dynasties. These dynasties all provided an
impact to each doctrine; the philosophy that had the greatest impact was legalism because it ended
the Warring States Period, provided structure, and strengthened agriculture, and the military of
China. Although Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism had a few things in common and at times tried
to resolve the same problem, they were very different from each other in their beliefs, character, and
ways of life. Confucianism was founded by the first Chinese thinker to address both the political and
social order of things straightforwardly and self– consciously. Kong Fuzi, or Confucius in English,
lived from 551–479 B.C.E., but his teachings did not reach their full potential during the his life of
an educator and political advisor born into an aristocratic family. Confucius gathered many disciples
to spread his beliefs that were rooted in moral, ethical, and political character. He didn't address
questions about religion because he believed they were above the human moral intelligence
capacity, nor those regarding obscure, complicated philosophical questions because they would not
help solve the problems of China. Confucius did not really even care about the state, but he did

Confucianism And Taoism
Often puzzled themselves, Chinese society finds it difficult to put a religious label on their belief
system, whether it be within the multiple sects of Buddhism, Confucianism, or Taoism. Throughout
the different beliefs and practices that each individual undertakes, one factor remains the same for
all and it is their base factor of belief in ancient wisdom. Although, it may seem like their strong tie
to ancient wisdom would equal them all believing in the same thing, this becomes contradictory
from one religion to the other due to the various sources of their ancient wisdom. Although, there
are different labels which entail different beliefs and practices, this essay will help shed light on how
Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism each bring key features that fuse together to form Chinese
popular religion and presents other factors that also influence this religion. Chinese popular religion,
consisting of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, divides into many rituals and obligations.
Success is centered on materialistic items, prosperity, and health (Corduan, 2012). With the belief
that humans are inherently good, Taoism focuses on the yin and yang of human life (Lecture 6,
2015). Taoism places an emphasis on cosmic adjustment and harmony within the world. One must
live their life without set intentions and they must not receive pleasure from eating and breathing,

Positive Principles Of Confucianism

  • 1. Positive Principles Of Confucianism To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must cultivate our personal life; and to cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right. (Confucius) The words above belong to Confucius, who was one of the most respected philosophers of all time. He founded a social and political system of philosophy, and transmitted his ideas to a group of disciplines. His teachings were later collected in a book known as the "Analects" by his followers. Confucius is arguably the most influential person in Chinese history, and the effects of his teachings still remain today. In short, Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and political ... Also, he defended that women must be obedient towards their husband, and men must protect their wives. Another Confucian family ritual is to value children, and to care about the word of the elderly women in family. These are the examples of Confucian family rituals, and these rituals were already existed in Chinese family system before Confucius, too. Confucius expressed these traditions in a clear and impressive way. As a result of this, the Confucian family rituals have reached up to the present day , and they are still being complied today. Women and men are still expected to be respectful and protective, children are still highly valued, and elderly are still powerful within in the family today in China. In conclusion, the family system of China today was organized by Confucius, and his teachings of family rituals are the rituals that has been used before Confucius, by the time of Confucius, and after him up to ... • 3. Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism In ancient China, many different rulers tried to unify and rule the country using a variety of methods – Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism to name a few. Each philosophy had its own set of rules of how people should act both in public and privately. The overall goal of each philosophy was to set a standard of acceptable living that would ensure harmony and success for the society. However, each was different and thus had different results. The best way for the people of China to succeed in a harmonious, respectable society occurred when both Confucianism and Legalism were combined. Confucianism resulted from a Chinese philosopher named Kongfuzi (551–479 B.C.E), also known as Confucius, becoming disheartened with the way the government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If there is dissent and it is not dealt with using corrective measures, then the government, and thereby society, will fall apart. One such example of this can be found in the Han Feizi document. It says, "The law alone leads to political order. If laws are adjusted to the time, there is good government. If government fits the age, there will be great accomplishment. Therefore, when the people are naïve, if you regulate them with fame, there will be good government; when everybody in the world is intelligent, if you discipline them with penalties, they will obey. While time is moving on, if laws do not shift accordingly, there will be misrule; while abilities are divers, if prohibitions are not changed, the state will be dismembered...Indeed, if the state is orderly, the people are safe; if affairs are confused, the country falls into peril...Yet everybody's likes and dislikes should be regulated by the superior." It is no surprise that the "philosophy" of legalism did not last long. Once the emperor died, people began to dissent and voice their opinions of being treated in such a manner. The next emperor, Emperor Gaozu of the Early Han Dynasty, determined that by combining Confucianism and Legalism would ensure a more accepted and obeyed political system. By allowing the people to follow certain rules that prescribed their status obligations while altering the laws created by Legalism, the society ran more smoothly for ... • 5. Confucianism : Taoism, Confucianism, And Confucianism Raymond Cho EALC 350 October 29, 2014 Professor Birge Which philosophy: Taoism, Confucianism, or Legalism would be best in your opinion for maintaining a peaceful society? Why? Perhaps there is no single philosophy that can create a truly peaceful society. The conundrum of choosing a philosophy to embody a peaceful society is rather complicated, as the ideologies of the philosophies often differ greatly from their real world application. Debates over ideologies can create global scale problems. Present day, countries even conquer and subjugate to spread and force their ideologies upon others. Although Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism all ideologically can create a peaceful society, I believe that while Taoism and Confucianism create a better ideal for peace, Legalism is the best option for maintaining a peaceful society when faced with the realities of human nature. Ideologically I believe Confucianism and Taoism to be perfectly viable beliefs to maintain a peaceful society. The founder of Confucianism, Confucius, looked upon his current China with dismay, "greed, insincerity, irresponsibility, callous disregard for others' needs and interest. And committed himself to trying to inspire people to do good." (Ebrey, 42) His moral philosophy entailed discipline to become 'learned men,' rituals and ceremonies for ones own ancestors, and above all else filial piety. (Ebrey, 42) These beliefs lead Confucius to mold Confucianism into a peaceful philosophy that when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Taoism And Confucianism When the government structure in China fell apart creating chaos emerged two major religions, Taoism and Confucianism. These two roles played a big part during this time to get things back in order. The difference between both religions is how they believed the structure should be. Taoism was not into much of the government. They believe the least the government the better. Lao–tzu who is the founder of Taoism is known for saying "Govern a great nation as you would cook a small fish" – do not overdo it (p. 180). By doing so, they will live a simple quiet life. In Confucianism, their belief is much different. The Confucians believe in a big government with an order. Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, believed if society lived by "Li", ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an infant, his parents sent him into the sea for safety. He was rescued by the daughter of the pharaoh of Egypt (p. 245). The difference with Moses was raised in a royal family not born into one. This stood out to me for the fact that both came from different classes of a family with a purpose in life. It shows you do not have to be wealthy to have a purpose in life. Another thing both Moses and Zoroaster had in common was they were both called by God at an older age to find out their purpose in life. At a crucial time in Zoroaster's life, he had a vision of Vohu Mana an archangel who appeared in the size of a man. He was told there is only "one true God, Ahura Mazda" and he would become a prophet. This archangel continued to appear to Zoroaster several more times as he continued to preach the revelation of Ahura Mazda (p. 227). Like Zoroaster, Moses was in a crucial part in his life after being exiled to the Sinai Desert for killing an Egyptian in self–defense when the God of Abraham appeared to him. The difference is God revealed himself to Moses speaking through a burning bush. God commanded Moses to return to Egypt and free the Israelites from slavery. God continued guiding Moses to freedom. This stood out to me because I am familiar with this story and learned more about it. Finally, there are the beliefs of the souls after death. Both Zoroastrianism and Judaism believe the souls go to a place after they leave the body. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Confucius And Confucianism Confucius's philosophical teachings about government and society discussed in the Analects revolve around morality and how a ruler and his people should act in order to stabilize society. Confucius looked to the past to discuss the problems of the present by modeling his teachings from the former Zhou empire. Confucius sought to bring back the Zhou traditions in order to better society. By linking moral behaviors to social roles and hierarchies, he emphasized that the stability of the government and society was directly correlated to the relationship between the ruler and the people. With the title "Son of Heaven," the ruler was expected to act morally towards his subjects and treat them with love and concern ("Introduction to Confucian Thought", 2009). This idea is directly related to the concept of ren, which discusses the well–being of others as the moral drive of society. He extended this idea into social harmony, being first and foremost embedded in the family. Confucius believed that the virtue of filial piety was the foundation for not just family life but also had implication for the ruler–subject bond ("Mencius and his development of Confucian teachings", n.d.). Similarly, Mencius centered his teachings on this idea by stressing that the well–being of the family directly corresponded to the well–being of the state. Most importantly however, Confucius also discussed the importance of the ruler ruling over the people with virtue, which was achieved through ritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Contributions Of Confucianism Confucius was a great Chinese philosopher, but he was also a teacher, editor, and politician. He was born on September 28, 551 BC, and died in 479 BC. He was most well known as Confucius, but his real name is Kong Qiu. After his death, Confucianism became the official imperial philosophy of China. Later after his death, he was regarded as a sage who deserved greater recognition, and his teachings became more popular. He accomplished many great things in his life, and died a successful man. Confucius envisioned a type of government where people strived to succeed. He thought that how you go about trying to achieve something, is more important that actually achieving it. He wanted their leaders to better their government, so he took control, and told the leaders how they should act. Teaching leaders how to behave was important to Confucius, because he wanted to bring order to society, and he wanted good people who could do that. He wanted the rulers to not be cruel anymore. Confucius said, "The man, who in the view of gain, thinks of righteousness; who in the view of danger is prepared to give up his life; and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends:– such a man may be reckoned a complete man." This was his real idea of a good leader. Confucius did not want the leader to be selfish, and he wanted them to keep true to their word. His opinion was that the superior man's words should never be incorrect. He wanted the leaders to be truthful to the people, and not tell them lies. Another thing Confucius thought made a good leader was when someone who is in conduct of himself maintains a sense of shame, and does not disgrace his prince's commission, deserves to be called an officer. This means that he thought if a man had these qualities, he was considered a good officer. He thought good leaders should maintain order by making sure what he said was carried out appropriately, as it is said in the Analects. He also said that in intercourse with others, be strictly sincere. Confucius did not want ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Piety In Confucianism In truth, filial piety, humaneness and reciprocity are three main ideas, which plays very important role in Confucianism. To begin with, Confucius is a famous philosopher who gave advices to the rulers and individuals on their behaviors. Worth to mention, Confucius's teachings were complied in the Analects after his death. Moreover, Filial Piety means respect for one's parents, and most people is familiar with that idea in Confucianism. From what I learnt in China, filial is the starting point of virtue. In addition, I think filial piety is necessary in a family, and the children should show the respect to their parents. Another importance virtue is reciprocity, which means one should reply what another person has provided. Furthermore, reciprocity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. A Short History Of Confucianism And Confucianism Daniel Meltzer ASST 101 Professor Dimick 23 November 2014 A Short History of Confucianism Confucianism is a way of life propagated by the Chinese philosopher Confucius in the 6th–5th century BCE, and it has been followed by the Chinese for more than 2000 years. Although Confucianism as changed over time, at its core, it is still places the same emphasis on the substance of learning, the source of values, and the social code of the Chinese. Additionally, the influence of Confucianism has extended to other countries such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. While Confucianism is sometimes viewed as a philosophy or religion, Confucianism is probably best understood as a sort of all–encompassing way of thinking and living, which includes such practices as: ancestor reverence and human–centered religiousness over that of the environment. While people all over Asia can argue that they are Shintoists, Daoists, Buddhists, Muslims, or Christians, but, by announcing their religious affiliations, very rarely do they stop practicing a Confucian way of life in addition to their religious affiliation. Although Confucianism is often grouped with the major historical religions, Confucianism differs from them in that it is not an organized religion. Regardless of this fact, Confucianism has spread to other East Asian countries under the influence of Chinese literate culture and has exerted a huge influence on their spiritual, cultural, and political life. • 17. Christianity And Confucianism : Confucianism Christianity and Confucianism Christianity and Confucianism are important religions today at least according to the Chinese. As a result, the rising influence brought about by Confucianism in China tends to trigger conflicts between the two religions. The Chinese society is greatly influenced by Confucianism, which has a considerable impact on Christianity as a religion in China. The modes of thinking associated with Confucianism are evident in the Chinese Christianity, but Confucianism ideas are deeply rooted in the lives of the Chinese. There is an increased rivalry and tension between these major belief systems as a result of the religion revival and the growth associated with Confucianism and Christianity in China (Lee & Ruhe, 1999). Confucianism has been manipulated in China by the Communist Party to its own benefits. This is evident through the perception of Christianity as a Western scheme and a threat to take over the cultural identity of China. As a result, the interactions between Christians and Confucianism are characterized by hostility and distrust. The challenge facing China at the moment is their ability to witness effectively in the emerging pluralistic society. Confucianism marks a major presence in China today as a result of the signs that demonstrate its growth. This ranges from prominent symbols to Confucian schools. Nonetheless, in such bloody era, the brilliant Chinese philosophers sprang up and started a Golden Age of philosophy. People call this phenomenon as the Contention of a Hundred schools of Thoughts. Those thoughts impacted the lifestyle and social consciousness not only at that time but even in the following thousands of years, especially for the Confucianism which was exclusively adopted in Han dynasty and rule the China for two thousand years. In this essay, I will focus on the Confucianism, discuss the central doctrines. The Cores of Confucianism As we know During the Spring and Autumn period, China's feudal system gradually became significant irrelevant. The emperor of Zhou dynasty had real control over only a small royal demesne centered on their capital Luoyi near modern–day Luoyang. During the early part of the Zhou dynasty period, royal relatives and generals had been given control over fiefdoms in an effort to maintain Zhou authority over vast territory. • 21. Confucianism And Daoism Essay Confucianism and Daoism affected the social structure of early China through culture, education, and government though the effects varied greatly between these two beliefs. Culture in China is different due to the teachings of Confucianism that began when Confucius was age twenty three, as well as the teachings of Daoism because both teachings believed in harmony and living tranquilly. Education was shaped by Daoism and Confucianism for the reason that Confucians believed everyone should be educated while Daosits thought it was irrelevant. Since Confucius lived in a time of political unrest from 551 to 478 B.C.E., he worked to gain political stability whereas the Daosits were indifferent on that issue. Culture was impacted by Daoism and Confucianism because the teachings that were proclaimed, breached on the topic of living a harmonious life filled with respect for one another. Confucianism especially stressed the idea of reverence towards an older person. With this mentality, it is almost as if adults are never to be at fault. Fathers were supposed to be revered and loved by the children. Though Daoism had a certain set of ethics and appealed more to the higher class, both religions promoted a nonviolent life. ... In this essay, I will focus on the Confucianism, discuss the central doctrines. God being someone who loves all people no matter their class or ethnicity. Also, he believed if God loves everyone equally, people should strive to love one another in the same manner. He believed that the powers of heaven acted on the world and exercised a love for all humankind. It is stated, "The principle of universality is the way of the sage kings, the means of bringing safety to the rulers and officials and of assuring ample food and clothing to the people... It is the way of the sage kings and great benefit to the people." (The Mozi, 49) His standard of action is strictly based on utility; love for all human beings is demonstrated by satisfying their immediate material needs and by abandoning all forms of activity and expense that do not contribute to the feeding, clothing and housing of the people. He spoke of the value of the labor of common folks, and he advocated promoting people to positions of power solely on the strength of their abilities and virtues. It is taught that it is necessary to recognize that to balance power is that people should not prioritize partially, but universally. With his "Universal Love" philosophy, he specified that a government would have no need to attack or have a war with another state. By not having war between each other there would be peace, and it would stimulate the economy by saving money. • 39. Comparing Confucianism And Daoism Confucianism and Daoism have influenced China for many centuries with conflicting and agreeing ideas. Confucianism consist of the very famous texts called "The Analects" and one very famously known as 'Mengzi" named after its writer. Similarly, the Daoists also have important text, such as the "Daodejing" which are compartmentalized into different sections. Differing in texts is a minimal distinction; Confucianism and Daoism differ in what their main concepts are. First, Confucianism focused on filial piety and benevolence (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Kong Fuzi was very concerned with how one presented his or herself to the public due to geomancy. One also had to respect one's elders in order to promote social hierarchy, which meant it would essentially keep the entire universe in order. Furthermore, Kong Fuzi believed that if social order were to be perfected then it would mimic that of the Dao, putting one closer to Heaven (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Following xiào is also known to bring success to one's family; therefore it should be followed (Mengzi: 118). Filial piety is a great concern in Confucianism as is benevolence (ren), and ... • 41. Mengzi And Confucianism One of the oldest philosophies in Chinese history is Confucianism. At the time of the warring states, Confucius wandered throughout China seeking a ruler who accepted the Confucian way. Since then, his ideas grew and are still relevant today. Throughout time other philosophers, Mengzi and Xunzi, have interpreted Confucius' teachings and have long debated whether human nature is good or bad. I argue that human nature is not, as Mengzi believes, inherently good, instead, completely self– interested. The Confucian philosopher, Mengzi, asserts that humans have instincts by nature that tend toward goodness. Meaning, because human have virtuous instincts, human nature is good. It is "kill or be killed, eat or be eaten," (London) because the cold, the wind, the snow, does not care about the wellbeing of man, nor understand humans needs to survive. So, when Mengzi uses metaphors depicting nature as a whole and glorious thing, I disagree. Mengzi believes that nature is good and therefore human nature is good, yet nature is actually savage. Almost all of Jack London's novels describe the ruthlessness of nature describing nature laughing, "a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility" (London). Nature is teasing people and pulling them into the brutal wild. If nature does not care about humans and is ruthless, then human nature is the same way. Humans have instincts which help them survive; that is human nature. This is the reason the human race has conquered the globe. Unlike what Mengzi believes, just like the wild, human's brains are hardwired to survive, and our actions are completely self–interested. With the example of the child falling into the well, Mengzi asserts that our impulse to save the child stems from human's sprout of compassion. However, I agree with Hobbes that "[w]arre, where every man is Enemy to every man," (Schwitzgebel) and the only reason human's instinct to save, is because our brains are hard–wired to keep the human race living. There have even been attempts to make Confucianism into a religion. However, present day people regard Confucius as an ethical teacher rather than a man of religious faith, and they refuse to believe that Confucianism is a religion. However, in order to determine whether Confucianism is a religion, the most important Confucian text, The Analects, must be analyzed to decide whether his teachings were rationally humanistic or based on religion and divinity. Throughout The Analects, it appears evident that there are aspects that seem metaphysical and beliefs that seem religious. One idea of religion that appears to be in The Analects is the idea of fate. This belief in fate suggested that Confucius had some belief in a supreme deity. Throughout The Analects, Confucius reveals many times this sign of divine commission. In Book VII, it quotes, "The Master said, 'Heaven is author of the virtue that is in me. What can Huan T'ui do to me?'" (Analects 89). Then in Book XIV, this idea is mentioned again, "The Master said, 'It is Destiny if the Way prevails, it is equally Destiny if the Way falls into disuse. The difference in focus between Confucianism and Taoism is that Confucianism was focused on having a structured society. It held as a principle the brotherhood of humanity. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Tao is the unknown, powerful force to which the whole world and universe flows. It is the ultimate reality and that everything is one despite the differences in appearances. They believed that life is good, there was an emphasis on the body, and the goal was to gain balance in life. They had a good view on women. They were generally equal to men and highly spoken of in the teachings. Taoism believes in the concept of the Yin and the Yang. This concept is that two halves, two opposites, make a whole. It is a balance, equilibrium of wholeness. The Yin is the dark side, while the Yang is the light side. We can see this balance every day in life. Like the day and the night, a man and a woman. There cannot be one without the other. Absence of light creates darkness; absence of heat makes it cold. When there are beautiful things, the ugly ones come out. And when there is good, there is also bad. One thing defines and complements the other. They coexist by opposing each other. Yet, nothing is completely Yang and nothing is completely Yin. One is the starting point of the other. They are interdependent to be complete. When one increases, the other one decreases. This is how they maintain the overall balance. Mohism, on the other hand, was rival to Confucianism and Daoism. He was too liberal to agree to all the social rules that Confucius had created. He did not agree either with the importance of tradition or rituals of Confucianism. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Comparing Daoism And Confucianism While Daoism and Confucianism are of two different strains of thought they often flow in the same way like two parallel rivers in governance in aspects of life, in practice the two systems are often flow be each other to some degree but never interconnect at any points. Confucianism deals with social matters, while Taoism concerns itself with the search for meaning. They share common beliefs about man, society, and the universe, although these notions were around long before either philosophy. Confucianism and Daoism are the two most influential philosophies in China both having their roots during the Zhou Dynasty The political and social environment that inspired these schools of thought was the breakdown of the Zhou monarchy and the rise of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Confucius, each person should act with virtue in all social matters; family, community, state, and kingdom, to ensure order and unity. Man's virtue in all its forms is called "ren" which would make sense but Daoism does not make much sense the ideology in which the ideal ruler and government do not interfere in the lives of the people and lead them to prosperity of primitive simplicity by nonaction and focuses on intuitive spontaneity. It is civilization that has corrupted humanity from its early state of innocence but realistically as a person or society lives and ages there is no such thing as innocence as one must grow and learn. The sage practices nonaction, gives up worldly ambitions, and lives a simple life in accord with nature though that one does. The dedication to right relationships and a solid social order contrast directly with the inner direct intuition of Taoism. While both philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism may end up with the same result in having a healthy society, one is taught and can culminate in results while the other is impeded by environmental variables and through inaction and exclusiveness may cause more ... • 70. Confucianism And Early Daoism 1. This question could be problematic in the sense that the religions in China don't have a specific God that they believe in nor do they not believe in God entirely. In classic Chinese the spirits and deities (Shen) were human but only became deities once they died and go into the existing hierarchy. (5–7, 8) While Confucianism is human based and early Daoism is based on "the entire cosmos and all its workings"; this helps draw the conclusion that "religion easily shades into the realms of medicine, astronomy, philosophy, government and more." (7–3 & 5–1) 2. Chinese religions such as Confucianism and early Daoism can be debatable on whether it is a religion or a philosophy. • 72. Confucianism, Taoism, And Confucianism In Chinese history, there were three main philosophies: Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. These beliefs helped shape Chinese culture as well as Chinese history. Not only did people believe in these ideas, but the three helped to govern the mighty Chinese dynasties. These dynasties all provided an impact to each doctrine; the philosophy that had the greatest impact was legalism because it ended the Warring States Period, provided structure, and strengthened agriculture, and the military of China. Although Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism had a few things in common and at times tried to resolve the same problem, they were very different from each other in their beliefs, character, and ways of life. Confucianism was founded by the first Chinese thinker to address both the political and social order of things straightforwardly and self– consciously. Kong Fuzi, or Confucius in English, lived from 551–479 B.C.E., but his teachings did not reach their full potential during the his life of an educator and political advisor born into an aristocratic family. Confucius gathered many disciples to spread his beliefs that were rooted in moral, ethical, and political character. He didn't address questions about religion because he believed they were above the human moral intelligence capacity, nor those regarding obscure, complicated philosophical questions because they would not help solve the problems of China. Confucius did not really even care about the state, but he did believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Confucianism And Taoism Often puzzled themselves, Chinese society finds it difficult to put a religious label on their belief system, whether it be within the multiple sects of Buddhism, Confucianism, or Taoism. Throughout the different beliefs and practices that each individual undertakes, one factor remains the same for all and it is their base factor of belief in ancient wisdom. Although, it may seem like their strong tie to ancient wisdom would equal them all believing in the same thing, this becomes contradictory from one religion to the other due to the various sources of their ancient wisdom. Although, there are different labels which entail different beliefs and practices, this essay will help shed light on how Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism each bring key features that fuse together to form Chinese popular religion and presents other factors that also influence this religion. Chinese popular religion, consisting of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, divides into many rituals and obligations. Success is centered on materialistic items, prosperity, and health (Corduan, 2012). With the belief that humans are inherently good, Taoism focuses on the yin and yang of human life (Lecture 6, 2015). Taoism places an emphasis on cosmic adjustment and harmony within the world. One must live their life without set intentions and they must not receive pleasure from eating and breathing, because these two aspects of life should be just that, essential aspects required to live.
