Sexual Objectification And Self Objectification Of Women
From Botticelli's The Birth of Venus to Ingres' The Grand Odalisque to Picasso's Les Demoiselles
d'Avignon, the female nude has been indicative of the ideologies of their historical time period.
Nude II is a contemporary example in that genre, painted by French artist Helene Delmaire in 2013.
Her work often features nude females and addresses the history of that genre both explicitly and
implicitly. It may not be intentional, but her work still relies on problematic paradigms, such as
female idealism, the male gaze and heteronormativity. The image Nude II provides a means to
explore the sexual objectification and self–objectification of women. As can be seen, Nude II is
rendered in a soft, sensual style, with no details being over–defined. The overall colour scheme is
pink and creamy and naturalistic. In a way, it's similar to how the ocean is depicted in the movie The
Little Mermaid, with "sweeping seascapes which resemble Georgia O'Keefe paintings, rich with the
female imagery of sea shells and cave openings" (Sells 178). This sets the underwater world apart
from the world on land, which can be read as a metaphor for the white male system (Sells 177). Just
as The Little Mermaid uses specific imagery in order to situate the underwater world outside of that
white male system, Nude II uses pastel colours and floral imagery to create a space that very easily
reads as a feminine. The bedroom setting makes it seem rather private and since flowers are
common symbols for

The Excessive Load Of Sexual Objectification
The excessive load of sexual objectification seen in the media delineates the lucid image of the
sexist culture we live in, but it is the obscurity of this misogyny that keeps us from taking action. A
month ago, I was strolling down the hallway minding my own business, trying to get to my next
class. It wasn't until an administrator stopped me when I realized that my shoulders were an enticing
masterpiece that would prevent males in my classroom from properly learning. "You need to
change, sweetheart" mumbled the middle–aged lady. Not wanting to give her any complications, I
put my sweater over my "provocative" shirt, despite of how sweaty I felt, and continued to my
classroom. I pondered about this event until the end of connect and realized that nothing is going to
change. It's not that severe of an issue to adults whether I'm learning or not, as long as I'm not
distracting male students, I'm fine. If we were to have this scene played out again with the opposite
gender, the results would be vastly different. A male student could have taken off his sweater to
reveal a sleeveless muscle shirt underneath with few people noticing, much less faculty. This subject
could easily be resolved. Anyone should be entitled to their own body, a restriction shouldn't be
imposed to dictate what one can wear or can not. Taking in the factors that it was a hot sunny day, it
was admissible to be wearing a tank top. Even so, the wistful truth is that no one seems to profess to

The Objectification Of Women In Advertising
Throughout the past five years of advertising, women have been seen as nothing more than
underdressed and oversexualized objects for men to look at. Women have been shown in
advertisement as carefree and problem free people who belong in the kitchen. According to most
advertisements, a woman is supposed to be getting guys drinks and taking care of their every need,
and doing whatever a man says because he is in charge. Advertisements that oversexualize and
overdramatize a woman's looks and behaviors make it hard for a man to take them seriously, and
sometimes men believe that it is okay to treat a woman as a sexual object, because "hey, everyone
else is doing it." Also, because of advertisements that oversexualize a woman, it makes younger ...

Many people say that because women are objectified in ads, it makes them less intelligent (Heflick,
"Objectification..."). Advertising companies don't, or maybe they do, realize that when they put a
woman in an ad, half dressed, in a "sexy" pose, and photoshop them that people are going to think
of that person as less intelligent, not qualified, and as a sexual object (Heflick). Nathan Heflick, a
social psychologist, said that "every time someone sees a sexualized image of a woman (which
studies show are far more frequent than those of sexualized men), this likely is detrimental to how

Social Effects Of Advertising In Advertising
When going shopping, watching the television or looking in magazines, young girls are among the
most targeted, being affected and vulnerable to the social influences of marketing and
advertisements. Many advertisements of clothing have depicted the female form in a sexually
provocative manner. Sexualisation is when a person's value comes only from his or her sexual
appeal or behaviour, to the exclusion of other characteristics. Furthermore, sexual objectification is
when the female body is seen as an object of male desire, which leads to a woman's worth being her
body's appearance and sexual function. Evidence from social and psychological studies is
suggesting that girls are exposed from an early age to sexualising content. On average, one–third of
clothing items available to young girls in stores have sexualised characteristics containing either
tight fitting and skin tight, low cut, or see–through parts. Such clothing emphasises sexual body
parts such as the chest, bum, or legs. All of which are products that are designed and marketed for
young girls below the age of fourteen. Many garments also feature sex–related pictures or writing
such as Future WAG, or short skirts and dresses, along with high–heeled shoes which are not age–
appropriate for young children. Some [high heeled] shoes I have seen on sale look more suited to a
lap–dancing club than the feet of a young girl. Even lingerie, which is typically for adults, is being
designed for girls onwards of the age of

The Sexualization of Women Today
The TV and Film Industry's Portrayal of Women has drastically affected many of their lives, much
too often women compare themselves to the female images they see on television, film, and
advertisings; at both the conscious and subconscious level, these media images of women lower
self–esteem and affect behavior at every age and stage of life. We know they are unrealistic, yet they
apply so much pressure on women to conform, and influence how we live, love, work and play. This
gender role that society has generally considered appropriate for women is wrong. It makes so many
of us women want to buy materials we don't need, with the money we don't have only to impress
people we don't know. So many teenage girls are unwarily developing eating ... Show more content

People haven't paused to consider if this is the right image or whether there are any alternatives."
(Nathanson, 2000) A large quantity of American women and teenage girls will never live up to the
standard that society has set for us today; nonetheless many women like myself, will go to
unhealthy extremes to attempt to reach what is considered the "normal" weight today. Far too many
people think that it will not happen to them, but it's happening all around us, women are obsessed
with dieting and working out excessively. Young girls are growing up in a world that sees her as an
object made solely for men's pleasure. A world that teaches them to define their self–worth by their
looks. Women's bodies are often objectified and evaluated more frequently. Females learn that their
physical appearance is important to themselves and society. As a result, females consider their
physical appearance often, expecting that others will also.
Most of the roles given to women today are hardly leading roles that depict a strong female, when
we see women in movies today, horror movies especially; we see them get placed as sexual objects.
Sexual objectification occurs when a person is identified by their sexual body parts or sexual
function. In essence, an individual loses their identity, and is recognized solely by the physical
characteristics of their body. The purpose of this recognition is to

Media Analysis On Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' Music Video
Media Analysis on Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' Music Video
In a nutshell, feminist scholars claims that the objectification of women is when women is reduced
to instruments of sexual pleasure for men which primarily involves disregarding women's personal
and intellectual abilities and capabilities. The examples of objectifying women that has been cited
by the feminists include depictions of women in advertising and media. This, however, can be traced
back in 1950's, when women were treated as sexual object in the narrative cinema. Today, the
objectification of women has been aggravated by the nudity concept in music videos, which has also
becoming part of the pop culture amongst the celebrities in 20th century. The essay aims to explore
the reading of the text within Miley Cyrus's provocative Wrecking Ball music video, using 'Male
Gaze' theory, and will include some major arguments from the feminists relating to the issue.
Without a doubt, the music video acts as the best media product to analyse these theories, as not
only that it has been cited in many feminism arguments, it also signifies Miley's controversial and
shocking 360 degrees transformation. Miley Ray Cyrus is an American songstress and actress, who
rose to global prominence as a teen idol after being cast in the hit Disney TV series – Hannah
Montana. The Grammy Awards nominee has released four albums to date, including 'Bangerz',
which includes 'Wrecking Ball'. Through the video, it is indisputable that

Advertising : Objectification And Objectification Of Women...
Advertising is an elemental part of today's society. It is a profitable industry which influences our
lives and lifestyle choices sometimes without us even knowing. Brands tend to use immoral tactics
to get the viewers' attention and a commonly used tactic is the objectification and sexualisation of
women. Using three contemporary advertisements as examples, this essay will focus on the
objectification and sexualisation of women within the chosen advertisements and the semiotics
behind the images.
Studies have shown that women are targets of sexual objectification more often than men. Sexual
objectification is a ubiquitous phenomenon whereby women are reduced to the status of "mere
instruments" to such an extent that sexualised evaluations of women separate a woman's body, body
parts and sexual functions from her personal identity and mental life (Bartky, S. 1990).
Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and movie director. His clothing line is renowned
worldwide and he is a prominent figure within the fashion industry. His ad campaigns have been
criticized numerous times for objectifying women with some of the advertisements being banned
across Europe. His response to the criticism was that "you can't show male nudity in our culture in
the way you can show female nudity".
This advertisement was from a menswear campaign in 2008. It shows a naked woman ironing a
man's trousers as he casually reads his paper waiting for her to finish. The sign denotes the

Social Media and Sexual Objectification of Women
Today, we live in a world where women are sexually objectified almost everywhere we look.
Halloween used to be fun and all about candy and cute costumes when we were children, but as
time goes on, adult women can feel pressured to dress up as something sexy, like a sexy bunny, a
sexy doctor, or a sexy tree somehow. In the marketing world, we now see women portrayed as body
parts, only having their legs shown in ads to sell the latest designer shoe or their inexplicably wet
lips on a billboard to promote an upper lip wax. Even in television and in movies, women are
depicted as being very sexual by their actions, dialogue, and "barely there" clothing. Because of an
increase in social media, videos from YouTube are being rapidly shared between friends and
amongst those videos are their favorite music videos from a popular artist. Music videos have
become more and more sexually explicit and include the sexual objectification of women like the
rest of our media, no matter what the genre of music is. One has to wonder whether or not this kind
of exposure has an effect on men and their sexual beliefs. First, lets explore what is shown in music
videos today and how women and men are presented. Music videos now show that women just don't
ever say no to sex and don't have a preference in men. They will take whoever, whenever. On the off
chance they do resist, they give in rather easily, adding to our rape culture and the belief that "no"
really means "yes". Women are also portrayed

Sexual Objectification in Music Videos and How Adolescents Are Affected
Lauren Faron, Aynsley Fishel, Nisha Patel, & Menelik Solomon

Music videos are easily accessible to everyone, especially adolescents. From its earliest origins on
TV to recent upgrades to technology on the internet, such as YouTube, anyone can watch music
videos at any time of the day. Online music video sites draw an average of 150 million people each
month who view more than two billion videos per day (Mischner, Schie, Wigboldus, Baaren, &
Engels, 2013). Sexually objectifying music videos have increased in the last couple of decades.
With this, more adolescents are being influenced by viewing these videos and mostly all of them are
affected in some way, either positive or negative. What a lot of people do not know is what is
happening to adolescents after viewing these types of music videos and how it can lead to
concerning effects later in development.
Literature Review
Adolescence is a crucial time in the lives of young boys and girls, especially when it comes to
viewing music videos. A survey showing that 78% of girls 12–19–years–old watch MTV regularly,
making them the most frequent viewers at around 6.4 hours a week (Bell, Lawton, & Dittmar,
2007). This is important because it brings into light the idea of girls watching these sexually
objectifying videos and how they experience body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is a

Objectifying someone is the act of completely degrading the person down to the sheer quality of an
object (Shaw, Lee, 2015). Sexual objectification degrades the person to an object of sex that mainly
serves as another's sexual pleasure. Advertisers do this to woman on the daily by dehumanizing
them or dismembering them to mere body parts – specifically showing only the woman's breasts,
butt, or legs. Dismembering a woman to sexualize only a part of their body erases the individuality
communicated through faces and makes it easy for an audience to only see them as a body and not
an actual person. Dismemberment is represented in the NATAN ad, as only the woman's bare legs

The Sexual Objectification Of Women
Women have been objectified, and in many cases, insulted or degraded, for decades. It is important
to note that to objectify means to "degrade to the status of a mere object" (Oxford). With the rapid
increase of technology, advertising in the media, social media, and the internet, there has been a
tremendous increase in the sexual objectification of women. In many aspects, digital images play a
major role in the sexual objectification of women. The majority of these images consist of
advertisements that are posted on the internet, on television, or on various forms of social media.
Some argue that men have to deal with the same type of objectification in the media, but it certainly
isn't as severe. Furthermore, the sexual objectification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women's bodies are essentially seen as decorative objects in advertisements to entertain men and
make money. Digital images pave the way for sexual objectification of women. It's important to
note that not all digital images do this, but many allow for the sexualizing and degradation of
women. Furthermore, with advertising in the media becoming so popular, it's hard to go a day
without seeing an image that objectifies a woman. Advertising companies and the media have
created a new type of woman, the "ideal" woman, that simply does not exist in the real world. This
woman typically has a size zero waist, is wrinkle and blemish free, with long, smooth, and
curvaceous legs. She has voluminous hair, perfectly straight white teeth, and perfectly shaped
breasts and butt. This ideal, yet unachievable woman is the center of many advertisements and is
essentially the selling product for these companies and businesses. Women in society are told that
they have to look like this idealized individual and are scrutinized if they don't. They should aim to
have her perfect body type and her face, despite what they have to do to achieve it. However, this
woman isn't real herself. This ideal woman is the result of hours of makeup, photo shopping, and
photo retouching that comes along with digital advertising in the media. Typical women see these
advertisements everywhere and are told they must look like

Whether you're in line at the supermarket or on the street and a bus passes you, you experience and
view media that targets women. Magazines and advertisements use the image of a women's body to
sell the products of interest, the saying "sex sells" is taken to new heights in today's society. "In
Western culture, the advertising industry has found great success in using the sexual exposure and
objectification of women as a vehicle for selling consumer products." (Vance, 2015). The
sexualisation and objectification of women and men impact negatively on society in terms of setting

women who have been sexually assaulted or raped. According to "The Criminal Justice System:

sexual assault is committed. You may have heard of rape culture on the news, social media, and/or
online, but rape culture isn't just some group of people or a society, but rather the concept of rape
culture means we have familiarized ourselves and have come to terms with rape and have made it
our norm in society or our culture. We have learned to brush it under the carpet, and often joke

It is quite evident that such popular culture is the most influencing for the rape culture. Rape, as
defined by Merriam–Webster is, "An outrageous violation; unlawful sexual intercourse or any other
sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex
organ, another body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim." Thus, if we were to
combine the definition of culture and rape, then the definition would state, in short, rape culture is
an integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior. Now that we understand the
definition, we must now look at the influences. "Becoming a donor is probably your only chance to

Sexual Objectification of Women and the Effect on Women

having on young girls, teens and even grown women. The portrayal of women as sexual objects in
these and many other types of media have greatly affected the mindset of society. What affects has
this had you ask? There are there main effects that we will explore. First, is the effect it has on their

These objectification trends are on the rise and are creating a low self–image for our young children.
This will continue to spiral downward as they mature into grown women. Once these young
children reach their teen years and even into early adulthood, this objectification brings on a second
effect. Their ability to form natural relationships is dwindling. Take for instance the show Rock of
Love or The Bachelor. Women on these shows compete amongst each other for one man's affection.
The actions of these women go much further than a regular conversation and first date. You see
these women get naked, make–out with each other, even sleep with these men all in the hopes that
for one more week they are able to stay in the house, just to turn around next week and do it all over
again. What is this teaching our children? Well for one it is teaching them that this type of behavior
is acceptable. This acceptable behavior has attributed to higher teen pregnancy, multiple sex partners
and now the new craze – sexting. In a SPARK Summit video, Yanique Richards a high school
student feels that these types of shows are directly targeted towards her and her peers. She states that

Sexual Objectification Essay
Introduction Christine Swanton et al., in "Treating Women as Sex Objects", illustrates what it means
to sexually objectify women and holds that sexual objectification is wrong because it extends from
the individual to an entire class of people through the usage of a real of fictive image of an
individual. (Swanton, p. 11–12). Timo Jütten, in "Sexual Objectification", defines sexual
objectification different from Swanton, but nonetheless, holds that it is always wrong in all
circumstances because it violates the autonomy and equal social standing of women and that it does
not require actual use of a woman (Jütten, p. 29). On the other hand, Patricia Marino, in "The Ethics
of Sexual Objectification: Autonomy and Consent", shows support for Nussbaum's theory and holds
that sexual objectification need not always be wrong, as it can be consented to between adults, given

12). In other words, sexual objectification is morally problematic because it is "manifested towards
women as a class" (Swanton, p. 12), rather than towards a certain individual. Sexually objectifying
an individual woman (that is, treat her as sexual stimuli) can be done through the commentary of the
size of her breasts or the shape of her legs (Swanton, p. 12). Whereas, sexually objectifying women
as a whole is more generally done through the use of pornographic images where there is no
particular woman as the target of objectification (Swanton, p. 12). This is problematic because it

The Effects of Sexualisation and Objectification on body image
One of the biggest issues with the sexual objectification of women in the new media is its
accessibility; as advertisements in new media are public information, this means that they are
omnipresent. Long–term exposure to negative images of women set the infrastructure for the
negative effects of self–body image in adulthood by normalising the act of sexualisation,
objectification and male sexual violence, especially for a large section of the audience who have
access to the media are children and adolescents who are easily influenced; this applies to both male
and female readers.
In a research conducted by the Penn State University, both male and female participants were shown
sexually suggestive ads and non–suggestive ads. It was found that not only were both genders more
inclined to look at magazines and other forms of media when exposed to suggestive ads, particularly
in comparison to those that showed only content and designs; male subjects were also more
accepting of voyeuristic behaviour after exposure to suggestive ads than to non–suggestive ads. This
proves that sexual objectification in the media is indeed effective in attracting public attention. It
was concluded that seemingly innocuous sexually–suggestive ads can lead to negative female self–
conceptions.
It is noted that the representation of women in the media are often extremely uniform, sharing a
similar set of characteristics/features: large

Sexual Objectification And Sexual Empowerment
Because of the patriarchal control within pop culture, women are being objectified to please the
gender biases of society. Women are forced to present a certain image that fits into pop culture
standards as shown in Lady Gaga's music video "Applause". Applause is a song written by Lady
Gaga in 2013 and was created to express how she appreciates performing because of the support
from her fans. This song targets the idea that musicians use their audience's approval to demonstrate
how successful they are. It is a common belief that the less clothing one wears, the more successful
they will be. "Perhaps the "porno–ization" of the pop star affords her less protection, allowing the
public to blindly accept that these young celebrities are indeed commodities–manufactured,
marketed, and sold by their owners," (Levande 310). This creates the idea that it is okay to objectify
young women for approval and audience ratings. However, there is a difference between sexual
objectification and sexual empowerment. Some female roles, such as Lady Gaga, are using their
bodies for sexual empowerment and are trying to convey the message to their younger audiences
that it is okay to be comfortable with your own body. "Rather than expecting girls to "achieve" the
ultimate goal of sexual empowerment, it seems that sexual empowerment should be viewed as a
long–term developmental process in which girls experience degrees of empowerment," (Peterson
310). Empowerment is something that young girls can

more sexually explicit and objectifying media content becomes. This fact remains true across
multitudes of media formats; today everything from vacuum cleaners to toothpaste is madly exciting

The first Mariah Carey Video I chose was You'll Always be My Baby. I chose this video for two
reasons. First and foremost, it was one of Ms. Carey's first hit singles and second, it deals (as do
most pop songs) with love. I thought that by choosing a song about love I might get to see some of
the more explicit video segments that the early 1990's had to offer. My hypothesis was far from
supported as this video showed relatively few stereotypes, and the sexual objectification of the
female main character (Mariah herself) was non existent. The video details a childhood romance
that faded, but the fact that first loves always hold a special place in one's heart. While both Mariah
and the adolescent girl she is played by are dressed relatively conservatively and are, for the most
part, not sexually objectified, certain stereotypes persist. For one the video only shows Mariah in
settings of leisure activities, she is rocking back and forth on a tire swing or is shown reminiscing
about her lover to her diary over candle light. Even the young Mariah is shown in this way, doodling
in a notebook as her adolescent boyfriend serenades her from outside the window. The boy on the
other hand is shown briefly playing sports and then studying (before sneaking out his window to

American Popular Culture : Sexual Abuse
American Popular Culture There's a common saying that "sex sells", which turns out to be true
according to pop culture. However, it's not just a sexual appeal that is shown, it's also a fantasy of
sexual abuse. "Sex in advertising is the use of sexually provocative or erotic imagery that is
designed to arouse a certain group of people" (Suggett). Advertisers are manipulating the human
desires to make their products sell. It's products that sell, are products that can capture anyone's
attention. One of the most helpful approaches is sex of course, which can capture anyone's attention.
The downside of using sexual imagery in advertisements is that it is generally going to come across
sexism. In American popular culture, advertisers continue to grab our attention to their brand
through sexual abuse; making it seem like a normality in our society. Advertisers use whatever they
are able to, to make "sex sell" in our culture just from a certain look or text. In this Burger King
advertisement, the sexual tension has become clear. Females are perceived a certain way in our
society to fit a man's needs in order to become an attraction for brands. It's been brought up to the
surface just by adding the black background, making the woman's face an extreme focal point. The
woman only has the bottom half of her face presented in the ad, drawing attention to her mouth. She
fits the description for how men want to see their women in their sexual fantasies. We are able to tell

The Hypersexualization of Young Women and the Role Models...
Free will and the ability to choose for ourselves are some of the most important natures that make us
human. As a society though, we have put limits and restraints on some people for arbitrary reasons,
and try to override people's free will, especially young women. In today's society, young women are
subjected to all kinds of prejudice and double standards. From having to face the 'slut or prude'
paradox of sex, the rules of dressing and appearance, or how to act in public, the amount of scrutiny
that they face is outrageous. These issues that they face creates a social dialogue that is constantly

Straight, young women in the United States have adopted a new wave of feminism, and have forced
it into mainstream view where any race and any class can adopt it. This variation of the feminist
movement involves "fighting fire with fire," and they have done this by adopting the hyper
sexualization of their bodies, and reversing it onto the male figure through the over sexualization of
the male body. Women have also taken a major virtue of feminism, which is the right of choice.
Instead of shaming others for being celibate or for being sexually active, they accept each other and
push to inspire others instead of forcing them into being submissive members of the knowledge.
Although, the real question is what has caused this new wave to appear so quickly, and in a way that
everyone almost has the exact views and behaviors? Again, if we look towards media and its ability
to make social knowledge spread like wildfire. Actresses, Musicians, and Pop Culture Icons have
also adopted this behavior and started a new social knowledge fire, and young women are
mimicking them. However, I feel that one person is an original fire starter of these new wave of
feminism, and that is Ke$ha. Ke$ha's behavior has always been under watchful eye ever since she
came into spotlight, and everything she does promotes this new wave, be it good or bad. Ke$ha

Social Media And Its Effect On Society
As technological advances have propelled humans into a new century there is bound to be a shift in
social norms. As the times change, so does societal views on acceptable values. One such possibility
is the standard value accepted by mainstream society in which the way a female body is sexually
portrayed in the media. It appears that society has not only accepted this standard, but has
increasingly encouraged a more sexualized representation of the female body. Social media is an
informational highway about what is accepted by the larger society and inferred by the individuals
who consume it. The internet has increased the amount of information, basically limitless, people
can receive via Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and many other forms of social media. What are the
risks and consequences of the messages that are sent to and received by adolescent females through
the social media of the idealistic sexualized female body? We hypothesize that, social media
increases the risk of self–objectification in adolescent females increasing the risk factors for mental
health disorders and puberty development. The purpose of this project is to discover the risks of
self–objectification and the effects that it has on the mental health of adolescent females. This topic
was chosen based on the idea of gender related oppression that we as female social workers may
encounter both personally and professionally.

Examples Of Sexual Objectification Of Women
Sexual objectification refers to perceiving and viewing an individual as an object existing only for
their sexual gratification (Malik). Both men and women have been objectified in different ways, but
women's objectification sexually has shown to be more rampant (Davies). Sexual objectification of
women occurs when their body or body parts are distinguished and separated from her as a person
and she is perceived fundamentally as a physical object to fulfill the sexual desire of males
(Szymanski, et al.). As the American Psychological Association (APA) outlines, sexual
objectification also arises when the value of a person only comes from their sexual behavior or
appeal while other features are excluded. In such cases, the woman is not seen as an individual with
the capability of independent decision making and action. In the American culture, sexual
objectification of women is rampant especially in media where women are portrayed as decorative
bodies to be seen. This normative culture portrays women in a manner that emphasizes their body

It is no secret that modern day advertisements circulate around celebrities. This is not new.
Unfortunately the propaganda does not end with a pop icon saying how much they love the product.
Take the Kardashians, for example. Kim Kardashian created her fame around her body. She was
displayed in a Carl's Jr. commercial where the focus of the video was hardly on lettuce. The
commercial says, "Who says salads can't be hot?". Following the release in January of 2010, there
have been 258 million media reports on the advertisement. There must be some reason why the
response to this thirty second video was so overwhelming. The Kardashians are the most well

Kardashians are hardly regarded as successful business people. Kim has created a culture through a

absurd plot of the game, it is remarkable that the revenue was so large. Kim's sister, Kylie Jenner, at

Sexual Objectification: German Philosopher Immanuel Kant
The concept of sexual objectification was introduced in the writing of German philosopher
Immanuel Kant during the late 1700s. In one of his book Lectures on Ethics, Kant expressed that
objectification derived from sexuality when exercised outside the context of monogamous marriage.
Once a person is treated as an object for sexual pleasure, they become "an Object of appetite for
another, all motives of moral relationship cease to function, a person becomes a thing and can be
treated and used as such by everyone." (Kant) He addressed prostitution and concubinage as forms
of objectification where women are degraded as objects for the satisfaction of men's sexual desires.
In his view, objectification is an act of degradation, subordination, and dishonoring of humanity,
when a human is reduced to a mere sexual instruments. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe the patriarchal society defines gender roles that permit men to feel superior to women,
and as a result, objectification is "created and sustained by pornography's existence and
consumption." (MacKinnon) In pornography, women are portrayed as sexual objects that "desire
disposition and cruelty; desperately want to be bound, battered, tortured, humiliated, and killed;
Women are there to be to be taken, used, violated and possessed." (MacKinnon) Pornography
normalizes sexual violence, it reinforces the idea that it is permissible to treat women as objects to
be used and abused. It causes its audience to think that women desire sexual violence, and there is
nothing problematic with abusing women.

Women Of The Hip Hop Culture
Within popular culture today, objectified female bodies can be represented everywhere from
advertising images to magazine covers, television, music and many more. Through these media
institutions, we allow them to construct social identities in ways that allow us to understand what it
means to be black, white, Asian, male or female etc. Within many popular culture mediums such as
music, stereotypical representations of racially marked female bodies are often formed. Thus, these
representations also have the ability to create stories about a certain culture. In music videos, it does
not go unnoticed that women are portrayed as objects whose objectives are to pleasure men. In this
paper, I will argue how racially marked female bodies are represented. This paper will mainly focus
on how these racially marked women are depicted in the hip hop culture. To demonstrate this, I will
draw examples by using award winning music videos by Nicki Minaj, R.Kelly, 50 cent to exemplify
representations of the female body and how they are objectified as sex objects. In conclusion, we
will be able to see how the female bodies are used in mainstream hip hop videos to convey
seductively.
In the world of Hip–hop, artists have the ability to shape the image and status of women in our
society. Over time, these music videos have misrepresented women and portray them as sex

Sexual Objectification Nussbaum Summary
Nussbaum defines sexual objectification as a loose cluster term, that individuals may view any of
the features as adequate, although a multiplicity of features are existing when the term is being used
(1995:258). Nussbaum involves seven features as followed; instrumentality; a tool for objectifiers
purpose, denial for autonomy; treatment lacking in autonomy, inertness; lacking in agency and
activity, fungibility; treatment as interchangeable with others, Violability; lacking in boundary
integrity, ownership; something that is owned by another and denial of subjectivity; someone whose
experiences and emotions need not be taken into account. Conversely, Langton (2009, 228–229)
adds an additional three features to Nussbaum's list. Reduction to the body; treatment of person ...

Nussbaum believes that amongst the seven original features instrumentality is the most challenging.
As it will be explained below, dissimilar to Mackinnon and Dworkin's view, Nussbaum–Langton
account does not consider sexual objectification to be connected to gender roles. Nussbaum
challenges the concept of sexual objectivity being an unavoidably negative phenomenon,
contending for the opportunity of positive objectification. She argues that it is not ethically harmful
as there are benevolent occurrences of it, and can be seen as pleasing features of the sexual life.
(Nussbaum, 1995, 251). Nussbaum goes on to say that objectification is only a negative
phenomenon when it takes residence in a setting where fairness, admiration, and consensus are
absent. According to Nussbaum, that if every time someone is treated or simply seen by another as
some sort of instrument, for some additional drive, individuals take it as the person in the query is
straight away the objectified. She then goes on to state that in our everyday lives, we objectify
almost all, this is including us

Sexual Objectification In Advertising
Although sexual objectification is commonplace in media culture, music videos provide the most
potent example of it. After reading many articles, it's obvious that people are missing the point.
Some argue that women are allowing themselves to be objectified. Although, many women are fine
with participating in the act, the bigger picture is the fact of objectification. It's definitely not about
women's choice. It's the overall societal impact; the fact that men are becoming more and more
enslaved to a society where sexual objectification is the norm. A lot of people are saying it's 2017
and women have choices now to be objective and they also talked about how happy they looked in
the music videos or movies. The question is would they still do the same thing if they were
presented with a different opportunity. Yes a lot of women wear make–up and chose to look good
for themselves but that doesn't give men the right to treat them as a sexual object.
The sexualization of women is used for the sex appeal in advertising to help sell a particular product
or services. Mainstream advertising such as magazines, television, and online media outlets, use sex
and it has become present in every promotional message for a wide range of brands. Sex in
advertising can be highly overt or extremely subtle and, on some level, subliminal on many levels. I
do not agree with how they use sex in advertising when they don't educated young men and women
about sex. Studies show that most kids at the age

Negative Effects Of Sexualization Of Women In The Media
2010, the American Psychological Association (APA) released a report on the sexualization of girls
in the media and found that massive exposure to media among youth creates the potential for
massive exposure to portrayals that sexualize women and girls and teach girls that women are
sexual objects. Examining various media, the findings proved girls are portrayed in a sexual manner
more often than boys; dressed in revealing clothing, with bodily postures or facial expressions that
imply sexual readiness. Women and girls are also more likely to be indicated portrayed in a sexual
manner (dressed in revealing clothing, with bodily postures or facial expressions that imply sexual
readiness) and are objectified (used as a decorative object, or as body parts rather than a whole
person).
With these sexist, stereotypical models of femininity constantly being perpetuated in the media, the
negative implications affecting the mental, emotional and physical wellness of girls are many.
Consequences for girls and women at–large include anxiety about appearance and feelings of
shame, eating disorders, lower self–esteem and depression. The study also found that sexualization
of women and girls can also have a negative impact on boys and men. According to the APA,
objectifying girls/women and sex itself is integral to masculinity and these beliefs may jeopardize
men's ability to form and maintain intimate relationships with women.

Theories Of Sexual Objectification
This study will be primarily anchored on the Objectification Theory. Szymanski, Moffitt and Carr
(2010) stated that "objectification theory provides an important framework for understanding,
researching, and intervening to improve women's lives in a sociocultural context that sexually
objectifies the female body and equates a woman's worth with her body's appearance and sexual
functions."
Alongside the Objectification Theory, other concepts and factors that are found to be strongly
associated with it such as conformity to masculine norms. In addition, other social factors which
may potentially serve as moderating factors will be included in the study in order to facilitate a
wider perspective of investigating the phenomenon of women's sexual objectification by men.

She contested that a woman is sexually objectified when her sexual body parts or sexual functions
are artificially split from the rest of her individuality, reduced to the status of a mere tool, and
regarded as capable to describe and entirely represent her. She also discussed a very important
demarcation between sexual objectification as a process and sexual objectification as an outcome.
Sexual objectification as a process is defined as "the act of symbolically separating the sexual parts
of a person's body or her sexual functions from the rest of the person". On the other hand, she
defined sexual objectification as an outcome as "the act of treating a person as if they had the status

Speech On Negative Body Image
Take a moment and think of the perfect woman. Does she have scars and stretch marks? Are her
teeth brilliantly white or tinted yellow? Is she a size 00 or size 12? The perfect woman probably
doesn't exist. She is, however, the ideal of media producers to make women believe that they are
imperfect. In today's society, the media has been allowed to corrupt the minds of young and old
alike. This problem persists throughout all age groups including fit adults and hefty adolescents.
Though it may be impossible to find an exact number, one could confidently propose that negative
body image affects thousands, if not millions, of individuals across the globe. The problem is that
one's body image often suffers due to outside forces; to combat this, he or she needs to be able to be
self–aware and self–confident when opposed. Starting in middle school, the majority of girls begin
to become dissatisfied with their body's appearance because of the onset of puberty (Akos 138).
Young girls in particular often feel this way due to increased body fat, acne, and bodily changes that
make them uncomfortable (Akos 138). In middle school, girls are exposed to a plethora of negative
opinions about their own bodies. In fact, girls who have been exposed to such opinions often feel as
if they are not beautiful. In a statistical study, between 28% to 55% of girls believed that they
needed a thinner body (Akos 138). To break it down further, about 80% of 10 and 11 year–olds

Hypersexualization In Advertising
The Walking Hypersexualization (the epidemic of sexualizing women in ads)
"What are other women really thinking, feeling, experiencing, when they slip away from the gaze
and culture of men?" ~ Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth. The University of Buffalo reiewed over a
1000 Rolling Stone magagazine covers, and concluded due to ther research, that objectification of
women over time has intensified. In the 1960's 11 percent of men and 44 percent of women on the
covers were sexualized while in the 2000's, 17 percent of men and 83 percent of women were
sexualized. This epidemic is called hypersexualization, and it mostly targets women; this is
prevalent in the advertisements of today. Over the years the stereotyping of women in advertising

The bases for this opinion, lies mostly in the placement and configuration of the models in the
advertisement. The female model is placed in a sexually suggestive positon. on the other hand, the
male models in the ad, are seen looming over the female mode; that suggests something menacing is
taking place. The female model is dressed in minimal clothing, that resembles a sexy baby onesie,
this is also evidence that the model is being sexualized. Although one can argue that since the men
are shirtless, the model is not as objectified as the male models. The facial expression of the female
mode does not depict fear, but it potrays a face that says, "I was expecting this". This phrase can be
concluding, because of how the model does not make eye contact with the males, but in a way
doesn't mind them taking advantage of her. The ad can also be viewed as a propmoter for the rape
culture, that is highy prominent in Amerca today. This ad brings women one step backwards, and it
shows them how the advertising industry has managed to glamorize the objectification of women.

women in society and it was seen that she was expected by Lars to be there for him for his every
need and want. This was seen as Bianca's identity was developed and interlinked with Lars' own
identity, ideals and fantasies: he made her a missionary (how nice of a sex doll), she parents died at
a young age (much like Lars') and she can't have children (Lars has a fear of having children due to
his abandonment during childhood). Her identity clearly reflected and shadowed Lars' own

Two Ways A Woman Can Get Hurt By Jean Kilbourne
Scantily dressed women are like an opened box of cupcakes on the cafeteria table; difficult to cease
thinking about. Are women, in today's society, mere sex objects and tools in the hands of
advertisers, or is this a gross misrepresentation in the pursuit of profit? In the article, "Two Ways a
Woman Can Get Hurt", by Jean Kilbourne, an award–winning author and educator, the idea about
women being utilized to attract profits are brought to light. Advertising agencies' motives are, in
essence, to successfully market and sell a product by whatever means necessary. However, of a
greater concern, is the sexual violence in our culture towards women and children as highlighted by
Kilbourne. In addition, she states that sexual violence is encouraged through advertisements, by
making it appear as though it is an acceptable circumstance. That this phenomenon is tolerated in
our culture is, indeed, a troubling thought. Nonetheless, Kilbourne leaves a distinct impression that
this toleration may, sadly, be true. These advertisements, the ideas, and images portrayed have an
undeniably negative impact on our culture as they serve to highlight stereotypes, dehumanize
women as a sexual object or tool and, with a constant bombardment of these types of adverts, results
in an indifference leading to victimization and possible violence that becomes almost commonplace.
In her article, Kilbourne emphasizes advertisements and images that reinforce her examination of
stereotypes in popular

Feminism Of Hip Hop And Rap Music
Introduction:
Hip Hop or Rap music is often related to themes of misogyny and objectification towards women
(Weitzer and Kubrin 2009 ; Gourdine and Lemmons 2011).
Ruby M. Gourdine and Brianna P. Lemmons specifically state that misogynistic themes began to
gain prominence in the genre during the late 1980s. I would suggest that the prevalence of
objectification and misogyny in hip hop could pose a threat to a positive self image for females,
exposed to this form of media.
What is objectification? The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy defines objectification, as "the
seeing and/or treating a person, usually a woman, as an object(Papadaki, 2015). Rae Langton asserts

Selection and Justification for Medium Of Analysis:
For my analysis I specifically chose to investigate the top three most popular music videos from
both Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea. I determined there popularity based on the number of views the
official videos had on their respective Youtube Vevo Channels. Popularity of the videos was an
important factor as this content would seemingly have the most far reaching impact, as a result of
the scale of viewers. Further, I avoided selecting videos based on their direct relevance to my

based on relevance could be influenced by preconceptual biases. Overall, music videos were

of a given song. In addition, music videos can provide a broadened and enriched creative concept in

When it comes to the courtroom during a rape trial, there are some crooked proceedings that go on.
Instead of looking solely at the case in front of them, it is now important for the people to take in
consideration what the victims were wearing at the time of their assault, their levels of intoxication,
and their past sexual experiences, all of which should not matter when a rape took place and there is
a clear victim and a clear criminal. One of the most common arguments on behalf of the defendant
is how the accuser was dressed when the rape or sexual assault happened. If the victim was wearing
a short skirt or a revealing shirt she was obviously asking to be raped, right? Wrong. There has
never been a certain appearance that makes someone more susceptible of being raped. They could
be slender or overweight, have blonde or brown hair, be of any race, old or young, and more
importantly, there has never been a set trend in how the victim was dressed. The only this matters is
when there is a serial rapist who is only attacking people who have a specific appearance; however,
this is due to past trauma and deals with matters that are more psychologically limited to that one
perpetrator. Rape is an act of anger, sadism, and power or punishment (Insert Snopes Citation).

Media Analysis of Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' Music Video

  • 1. Sexual Objectification And Self Objectification Of Women From Botticelli's The Birth of Venus to Ingres' The Grand Odalisque to Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the female nude has been indicative of the ideologies of their historical time period. Nude II is a contemporary example in that genre, painted by French artist Helene Delmaire in 2013. Her work often features nude females and addresses the history of that genre both explicitly and implicitly. It may not be intentional, but her work still relies on problematic paradigms, such as female idealism, the male gaze and heteronormativity. The image Nude II provides a means to explore the sexual objectification and self–objectification of women. As can be seen, Nude II is rendered in a soft, sensual style, with no details being over–defined. The overall colour scheme is pink and creamy and naturalistic. In a way, it's similar to how the ocean is depicted in the movie The Little Mermaid, with "sweeping seascapes which resemble Georgia O'Keefe paintings, rich with the female imagery of sea shells and cave openings" (Sells 178). This sets the underwater world apart from the world on land, which can be read as a metaphor for the white male system (Sells 177). Just as The Little Mermaid uses specific imagery in order to situate the underwater world outside of that white male system, Nude II uses pastel colours and floral imagery to create a space that very easily reads as a feminine. The bedroom setting makes it seem rather private and since flowers are common symbols for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Excessive Load Of Sexual Objectification The excessive load of sexual objectification seen in the media delineates the lucid image of the sexist culture we live in, but it is the obscurity of this misogyny that keeps us from taking action. A month ago, I was strolling down the hallway minding my own business, trying to get to my next class. It wasn't until an administrator stopped me when I realized that my shoulders were an enticing masterpiece that would prevent males in my classroom from properly learning. "You need to change, sweetheart" mumbled the middle–aged lady. Not wanting to give her any complications, I put my sweater over my "provocative" shirt, despite of how sweaty I felt, and continued to my classroom. I pondered about this event until the end of connect and realized that nothing is going to change. It's not that severe of an issue to adults whether I'm learning or not, as long as I'm not distracting male students, I'm fine. If we were to have this scene played out again with the opposite gender, the results would be vastly different. A male student could have taken off his sweater to reveal a sleeveless muscle shirt underneath with few people noticing, much less faculty. This subject could easily be resolved. Anyone should be entitled to their own body, a restriction shouldn't be imposed to dictate what one can wear or can not. Taking in the factors that it was a hot sunny day, it was admissible to be wearing a tank top. Even so, the wistful truth is that no one seems to profess to this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Objectification Of Women In Advertising Throughout the past five years of advertising, women have been seen as nothing more than underdressed and oversexualized objects for men to look at. Women have been shown in advertisement as carefree and problem free people who belong in the kitchen. According to most advertisements, a woman is supposed to be getting guys drinks and taking care of their every need, and doing whatever a man says because he is in charge. Advertisements that oversexualize and overdramatize a woman's looks and behaviors make it hard for a man to take them seriously, and sometimes men believe that it is okay to treat a woman as a sexual object, because "hey, everyone else is doing it." Also, because of advertisements that oversexualize a woman, it makes younger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people say that because women are objectified in ads, it makes them less intelligent (Heflick, "Objectification..."). Advertising companies don't, or maybe they do, realize that when they put a woman in an ad, half dressed, in a "sexy" pose, and photoshop them that people are going to think of that person as less intelligent, not qualified, and as a sexual object (Heflick). Nathan Heflick, a social psychologist, said that "every time someone sees a sexualized image of a woman (which studies show are far more frequent than those of sexualized men), this likely is detrimental to how women are ... • 4. Social Effects Of Advertising In Advertising When going shopping, watching the television or looking in magazines, young girls are among the most targeted, being affected and vulnerable to the social influences of marketing and advertisements. Many advertisements of clothing have depicted the female form in a sexually provocative manner. Sexualisation is when a person's value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behaviour, to the exclusion of other characteristics. Furthermore, sexual objectification is when the female body is seen as an object of male desire, which leads to a woman's worth being her body's appearance and sexual function. Evidence from social and psychological studies is suggesting that girls are exposed from an early age to sexualising content. On average, one–third of clothing items available to young girls in stores have sexualised characteristics containing either tight fitting and skin tight, low cut, or see–through parts. Such clothing emphasises sexual body parts such as the chest, bum, or legs. All of which are products that are designed and marketed for young girls below the age of fourteen. Many garments also feature sex–related pictures or writing such as Future WAG, or short skirts and dresses, along with high–heeled shoes which are not age– appropriate for young children. Some [high heeled] shoes I have seen on sale look more suited to a lap–dancing club than the feet of a young girl. Even lingerie, which is typically for adults, is being designed for girls onwards of the age of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Sexualization of Women Today The TV and Film Industry's Portrayal of Women has drastically affected many of their lives, much too often women compare themselves to the female images they see on television, film, and advertisings; at both the conscious and subconscious level, these media images of women lower self–esteem and affect behavior at every age and stage of life. We know they are unrealistic, yet they apply so much pressure on women to conform, and influence how we live, love, work and play. This gender role that society has generally considered appropriate for women is wrong. It makes so many of us women want to buy materials we don't need, with the money we don't have only to impress people we don't know. So many teenage girls are unwarily developing eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People haven't paused to consider if this is the right image or whether there are any alternatives." (Nathanson, 2000) A large quantity of American women and teenage girls will never live up to the standard that society has set for us today; nonetheless many women like myself, will go to unhealthy extremes to attempt to reach what is considered the "normal" weight today. Far too many people think that it will not happen to them, but it's happening all around us, women are obsessed with dieting and working out excessively. Young girls are growing up in a world that sees her as an object made solely for men's pleasure. A world that teaches them to define their self–worth by their looks. Women's bodies are often objectified and evaluated more frequently. Females learn that their physical appearance is important to themselves and society. As a result, females consider their physical appearance often, expecting that others will also. Most of the roles given to women today are hardly leading roles that depict a strong female, when we see women in movies today, horror movies especially; we see them get placed as sexual objects. Sexual objectification occurs when a person is identified by their sexual body parts or sexual function. In essence, an individual loses their identity, and is recognized solely by the physical characteristics of their body. The purpose of this recognition is to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Media Analysis On Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' Music Video Media Analysis on Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' Music Video In a nutshell, feminist scholars claims that the objectification of women is when women is reduced to instruments of sexual pleasure for men which primarily involves disregarding women's personal and intellectual abilities and capabilities. The examples of objectifying women that has been cited by the feminists include depictions of women in advertising and media. This, however, can be traced back in 1950's, when women were treated as sexual object in the narrative cinema. Today, the objectification of women has been aggravated by the nudity concept in music videos, which has also becoming part of the pop culture amongst the celebrities in 20th century. The essay aims to explore the reading of the text within Miley Cyrus's provocative Wrecking Ball music video, using 'Male Gaze' theory, and will include some major arguments from the feminists relating to the issue. Without a doubt, the music video acts as the best media product to analyse these theories, as not only that it has been cited in many feminism arguments, it also signifies Miley's controversial and shocking 360 degrees transformation. Miley Ray Cyrus is an American songstress and actress, who rose to global prominence as a teen idol after being cast in the hit Disney TV series – Hannah Montana. The Grammy Awards nominee has released four albums to date, including 'Bangerz', which includes 'Wrecking Ball'. Through the video, it is indisputable that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Advertising : Objectification And Objectification Of Women... Advertising is an elemental part of today's society. It is a profitable industry which influences our lives and lifestyle choices sometimes without us even knowing. Brands tend to use immoral tactics to get the viewers' attention and a commonly used tactic is the objectification and sexualisation of women. Using three contemporary advertisements as examples, this essay will focus on the objectification and sexualisation of women within the chosen advertisements and the semiotics behind the images. Studies have shown that women are targets of sexual objectification more often than men. Sexual objectification is a ubiquitous phenomenon whereby women are reduced to the status of "mere instruments" to such an extent that sexualised evaluations of women separate a woman's body, body parts and sexual functions from her personal identity and mental life (Bartky, S. 1990). Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and movie director. His clothing line is renowned worldwide and he is a prominent figure within the fashion industry. His ad campaigns have been criticized numerous times for objectifying women with some of the advertisements being banned across Europe. His response to the criticism was that "you can't show male nudity in our culture in the way you can show female nudity". This advertisement was from a menswear campaign in 2008. It shows a naked woman ironing a man's trousers as he casually reads his paper waiting for her to finish. The sign denotes the submission of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Social Media and Sexual Objectification of Women Today, we live in a world where women are sexually objectified almost everywhere we look. Halloween used to be fun and all about candy and cute costumes when we were children, but as time goes on, adult women can feel pressured to dress up as something sexy, like a sexy bunny, a sexy doctor, or a sexy tree somehow. In the marketing world, we now see women portrayed as body parts, only having their legs shown in ads to sell the latest designer shoe or their inexplicably wet lips on a billboard to promote an upper lip wax. Even in television and in movies, women are depicted as being very sexual by their actions, dialogue, and "barely there" clothing. Because of an increase in social media, videos from YouTube are being rapidly shared between friends and amongst those videos are their favorite music videos from a popular artist. Music videos have become more and more sexually explicit and include the sexual objectification of women like the rest of our media, no matter what the genre of music is. One has to wonder whether or not this kind of exposure has an effect on men and their sexual beliefs. First, lets explore what is shown in music videos today and how women and men are presented. Music videos now show that women just don't ever say no to sex and don't have a preference in men. They will take whoever, whenever. On the off chance they do resist, they give in rather easily, adding to our rape culture and the belief that "no" really means "yes". Women are also portrayed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sexual Objectification Of Music Videos And How Adolescents... Sexual Objectification in Music Videos and How Adolescents Are Affected Lauren Faron, Aynsley Fishel, Nisha Patel, & Menelik Solomon The Ohio State University Music videos are easily accessible to everyone, especially adolescents. From its earliest origins on TV to recent upgrades to technology on the internet, such as YouTube, anyone can watch music videos at any time of the day. Online music video sites draw an average of 150 million people each month who view more than two billion videos per day (Mischner, Schie, Wigboldus, Baaren, & Engels, 2013). Sexually objectifying music videos have increased in the last couple of decades. With this, more adolescents are being influenced by viewing these videos and mostly all of them are affected in some way, either positive or negative. What a lot of people do not know is what is happening to adolescents after viewing these types of music videos and how it can lead to concerning effects later in development. Literature Review Adolescence is a crucial time in the lives of young boys and girls, especially when it comes to viewing music videos. A survey showing that 78% of girls 12–19–years–old watch MTV regularly, making them the most frequent viewers at around 6.4 hours a week (Bell, Lawton, & Dittmar, 2007). This is important because it brings into light the idea of girls watching these sexually objectifying videos and how they experience body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is a ... • 10. Sexual Objectification Of Women In Advertising This is an advertisement for NATAN, a women's fashion company. In the ad, there are two similar photos shown: one of which shows a white man presenting a closed jewellery box to a white woman who is sitting in a short dress, heels and has her legs crossed. In the second photo, it shows the same man and woman but a different scenario in which the man has opened the jewellery box to show a ring. In response to the ring the woman has opened her legs. The ad is captioned, 'The first remote control ever invented...' (Juergen, 2015). In this ad, NATAN is suggesting that by purchasing their jewellery, it is a guarantee that the woman will sleep with you. Objectifying someone is the act of completely degrading the person down to the sheer quality of an object (Shaw, Lee, 2015). Sexual objectification degrades the person to an object of sex that mainly serves as another's sexual pleasure. Advertisers do this to woman on the daily by dehumanizing them or dismembering them to mere body parts – specifically showing only the woman's breasts, butt, or legs. Dismembering a woman to sexualize only a part of their body erases the individuality communicated through faces and makes it easy for an audience to only see them as a body and not an actual person. • 11. The Sexual Objectification Of Women Women have been objectified, and in many cases, insulted or degraded, for decades. It is important to note that to objectify means to "degrade to the status of a mere object" (Oxford). With the rapid increase of technology, advertising in the media, social media, and the internet, there has been a tremendous increase in the sexual objectification of women. In many aspects, digital images play a major role in the sexual objectification of women. The majority of these images consist of advertisements that are posted on the internet, on television, or on various forms of social media. Some argue that men have to deal with the same type of objectification in the media, but it certainly isn't as severe. Furthermore, the sexual objectification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women's bodies are essentially seen as decorative objects in advertisements to entertain men and make money. Digital images pave the way for sexual objectification of women. It's important to note that not all digital images do this, but many allow for the sexualizing and degradation of women. Furthermore, with advertising in the media becoming so popular, it's hard to go a day without seeing an image that objectifies a woman. Advertising companies and the media have created a new type of woman, the "ideal" woman, that simply does not exist in the real world. This woman typically has a size zero waist, is wrinkle and blemish free, with long, smooth, and curvaceous legs. She has voluminous hair, perfectly straight white teeth, and perfectly shaped breasts and butt. This ideal, yet unachievable woman is the center of many advertisements and is essentially the selling product for these companies and businesses. Women in society are told that they have to look like this idealized individual and are scrutinized if they don't. They should aim to have her perfect body type and her face, despite what they have to do to achieve it. However, this woman isn't real herself. This ideal woman is the result of hours of makeup, photo shopping, and photo retouching that comes along with digital advertising in the media. Typical women see these advertisements everywhere and are told they must look like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Magazines and advertisements use the image of a women's body to sell the products of interest, the saying "sex sells" is taken to new heights in today's society. "In Western culture, the advertising industry has found great success in using the sexual exposure and objectification of women as a vehicle for selling consumer products." (Vance, 2015). You may have heard of rape culture on the news, social media, and/or online, but rape culture isn't just some group of people or a society, but rather the concept of rape culture means we have familiarized ourselves and have come to terms with rape and have made it our norm in society or our culture. We have learned to brush it under the carpet, and often joke about it, and even go so far as to blame the victim for the attack. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is quite evident that such popular culture is the most influencing for the rape culture. Rape, as defined by Merriam–Webster is, "An outrageous violation; unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, another body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim." Thus, if we were to combine the definition of culture and rape, then the definition would state, in short, rape culture is an integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior. Now that we understand the definition, we must now look at the influences. "Becoming a donor is probably your only chance to get inside her (Akalin)." Sexual Objectification and the Effects on Women Essay Sexual Objectification of Women and the Effect on Women Everywhere you turn, there are magazine covers, movies, reality TV shows that portray woman in a sexual light. When was the last time that we as a society sat down and realized the effect that this is having on young girls, teens and even grown women. The portrayal of women as sexual objects in these and many other types of media have greatly affected the mindset of society. What affects has this had you ask? There are there main effects that we will explore. First, is the effect it has on their self–image. Second, is the effect on how they portray themselves in their relationships. These objectification trends are on the rise and are creating a low self–image for our young children. This will continue to spiral downward as they mature into grown women. Once these young children reach their teen years and even into early adulthood, this objectification brings on a second effect. Their ability to form natural relationships is dwindling. Take for instance the show Rock of Love or The Bachelor. Women on these shows compete amongst each other for one man's affection. The actions of these women go much further than a regular conversation and first date. You see these women get naked, make–out with each other, even sleep with these men all in the hopes that for one more week they are able to stay in the house, just to turn around next week and do it all over again. What is this teaching our children? Well for one it is teaching them that this type of behavior is acceptable. This acceptable behavior has attributed to higher teen pregnancy, multiple sex partners and now the new craze – sexting. In a SPARK Summit video, Yanique Richards a high school student feels that these types of shows are directly targeted towards her and her peers. Many of the commercials from the 60's to the 2000's depict women as nothing more than sexual beings to sell a product. • 17. Sexual Objectification Essay Introduction Christine Swanton et al., in "Treating Women as Sex Objects", illustrates what it means to sexually objectify women and holds that sexual objectification is wrong because it extends from the individual to an entire class of people through the usage of a real of fictive image of an individual. (Swanton, p. 11–12). Timo Jütten, in "Sexual Objectification", defines sexual objectification different from Swanton, but nonetheless, holds that it is always wrong in all circumstances because it violates the autonomy and equal social standing of women and that it does not require actual use of a woman (Jütten, p. 29). On the other hand, Patricia Marino, in "The Ethics of Sexual Objectification: Autonomy and Consent", shows support for Nussbaum's theory and holds that sexual objectification need not always be wrong, as it can be consented to between adults, given the right social and political context and that weak instrumental use of a person is benign ... In other words, sexual objectification is morally problematic because it is "manifested towards women as a class" (Swanton, p. 12), rather than towards a certain individual. Sexually objectifying an individual woman (that is, treat her as sexual stimuli) can be done through the commentary of the size of her breasts or the shape of her legs (Swanton, p. 12). Whereas, sexually objectifying women as a whole is more generally done through the use of pornographic images where there is no particular woman as the target of objectification (Swanton, p. 12). This is problematic because it alters the view of all women in the eyes of pornographic image users and this causes the imposition of this tainted view onto all other women who are not displayed in those ... • 18. Sexual Objectification The Effects of Sexualisation and Objectification on body image One of the biggest issues with the sexual objectification of women in the new media is its accessibility; as advertisements in new media are public information, this means that they are omnipresent. Long–term exposure to negative images of women set the infrastructure for the negative effects of self–body image in adulthood by normalising the act of sexualisation, objectification and male sexual violence, especially for a large section of the audience who have access to the media are children and adolescents who are easily influenced; this applies to both male and female readers. In a research conducted by the Penn State University, both male and female participants were shown sexually suggestive ads and non–suggestive ads. It was found that not only were both genders more inclined to look at magazines and other forms of media when exposed to suggestive ads, particularly in comparison to those that showed only content and designs; male subjects were also more accepting of voyeuristic behaviour after exposure to suggestive ads than to non–suggestive ads. This proves that sexual objectification in the media is indeed effective in attracting public attention. It was concluded that seemingly innocuous sexually–suggestive ads can lead to negative female self– conceptions. It is noted that the representation of women in the media are often extremely uniform, sharing a similar set of characteristics/features: large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Sexual Objectification And Sexual Empowerment Because of the patriarchal control within pop culture, women are being objectified to please the gender biases of society. Women are forced to present a certain image that fits into pop culture standards as shown in Lady Gaga's music video "Applause". Applause is a song written by Lady Gaga in 2013 and was created to express how she appreciates performing because of the support from her fans. This song targets the idea that musicians use their audience's approval to demonstrate how successful they are. It is a common belief that the less clothing one wears, the more successful they will be. "Perhaps the "porno–ization" of the pop star affords her less protection, allowing the public to blindly accept that these young celebrities are indeed commodities–manufactured, marketed, and sold by their owners," (Levande 310). This creates the idea that it is okay to objectify young women for approval and audience ratings. However, there is a difference between sexual objectification and sexual empowerment. Some female roles, such as Lady Gaga, are using their bodies for sexual empowerment and are trying to convey the message to their younger audiences that it is okay to be comfortable with your own body. "Rather than expecting girls to "achieve" the ultimate goal of sexual empowerment, it seems that sexual empowerment should be viewed as a long–term developmental process in which girls experience degrees of empowerment," (Peterson 310). I thought that by choosing a song about love I might get to see some of the more explicit video segments that the early 1990's had to offer. My hypothesis was far from supported as this video showed relatively few stereotypes, and the sexual objectification of the female main character (Mariah herself) was non existent. The video details a childhood romance that faded, but the fact that first loves always hold a special place in one's heart. While both Mariah and the adolescent girl she is played by are dressed relatively conservatively and are, for the most part, not sexually objectified, certain stereotypes persist. For one the video only shows Mariah in settings of leisure activities, she is rocking back and forth on a tire swing or is shown reminiscing about her lover to her diary over candle light. However, it's not just a sexual appeal that is shown, it's also a fantasy of sexual abuse. "Sex in advertising is the use of sexually provocative or erotic imagery that is designed to arouse a certain group of people" (Suggett). Advertisers are manipulating the human desires to make their products sell. It's products that sell, are products that can capture anyone's attention. One of the most helpful approaches is sex of course, which can capture anyone's attention. The downside of using sexual imagery in advertisements is that it is generally going to come across sexism. In American popular culture, advertisers continue to grab our attention to their brand through sexual abuse; making it seem like a normality in our society. Both men and women have been objectified in different ways, but women's objectification sexually has shown to be more rampant (Davies). Sexual objectification of women occurs when their body or body parts are distinguished and separated from her as a person and she is perceived fundamentally as a physical object to fulfill the sexual desire of males (Szymanski, et al.). As the American Psychological Association (APA) outlines, sexual objectification also arises when the value of a person only comes from their sexual behavior or appeal while other features are excluded. Once a person is treated as an object for sexual pleasure, they become "an Object of appetite for another, all motives of moral relationship cease to function, a person becomes a thing and can be treated and used as such by everyone." After reading many articles, it's obvious that people are missing the point. Some argue that women are allowing themselves to be objectified. Although, many women are fine with participating in the act, the bigger picture is the fact of objectification. It's definitely not about women's choice. It's the overall societal impact; the fact that men are becoming more and more enslaved to a society where sexual objectification is the norm. A lot of people are saying it's 2017 and women have choices now to be objective and they also talked about how happy they looked in the music videos or movies. The question is would they still do the same thing if they were presented with a different opportunity. Negative Effects Of Sexualization Of Women In The Media 2010, the American Psychological Association (APA) released a report on the sexualization of girls in the media and found that massive exposure to media among youth creates the potential for massive exposure to portrayals that sexualize women and girls and teach girls that women are sexual objects. Examining various media, the findings proved girls are portrayed in a sexual manner more often than boys; dressed in revealing clothing, with bodily postures or facial expressions that imply sexual readiness. Women and girls are also more likely to be indicated portrayed in a sexual manner (dressed in revealing clothing, with bodily postures or facial expressions that imply sexual readiness) and are objectified (used as a decorative object, or as body parts rather than a whole person). • 34. Speech On Negative Body Image Take a moment and think of the perfect woman. Does she have scars and stretch marks? Are her teeth brilliantly white or tinted yellow? Is she a size 00 or size 12? The perfect woman probably doesn't exist. She is, however, the ideal of media producers to make women believe that they are imperfect. In today's society, the media has been allowed to corrupt the minds of young and old alike. This problem persists throughout all age groups including fit adults and hefty adolescents. Though it may be impossible to find an exact number, one could confidently propose that negative body image affects thousands, if not millions, of individuals across the globe. The problem is that one's body image often suffers due to outside forces; to combat this, he or she needs to be able to be self–aware and self–confident when opposed. Starting in middle school, the majority of girls begin to become dissatisfied with their body's appearance because of the onset of puberty (Akos 138). Young girls in particular often feel this way due to increased body fat, acne, and bodily changes that make them uncomfortable (Akos 138). In middle school, girls are exposed to a plethora of negative opinions about their own bodies. In fact, girls who have been exposed to such opinions often feel as if they are not beautiful. In a statistical study, between 28% to 55% of girls believed that they needed a thinner body (Akos 138). To break it down further, about 80% of 10 and 11 year–olds believe that they ... • 35. Hypersexualization In Advertising The Walking Hypersexualization (the epidemic of sexualizing women in ads) "What are other women really thinking, feeling, experiencing, when they slip away from the gaze and culture of men?" ~ Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth. The University of Buffalo reiewed over a 1000 Rolling Stone magagazine covers, and concluded due to ther research, that objectification of women over time has intensified. In the 1960's 11 percent of men and 44 percent of women on the covers were sexualized while in the 2000's, 17 percent of men and 83 percent of women were sexualized. This epidemic is called hypersexualization, and it mostly targets women; this is prevalent in the advertisements of today. Over the years the stereotyping of women in advertising has slackened, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bases for this opinion, lies mostly in the placement and configuration of the models in the advertisement. The female model is placed in a sexually suggestive positon. on the other hand, the male models in the ad, are seen looming over the female mode; that suggests something menacing is taking place. The female model is dressed in minimal clothing, that resembles a sexy baby onesie, this is also evidence that the model is being sexualized. Although one can argue that since the men are shirtless, the model is not as objectified as the male models. The facial expression of the female mode does not depict fear, but it potrays a face that says, "I was expecting this". This phrase can be concluding, because of how the model does not make eye contact with the males, but in a way doesn't mind them taking advantage of her. The ad can also be viewed as a propmoter for the rape culture, that is highy prominent in Amerca today. This ad brings women one step backwards, and it shows them how the advertising industry has managed to glamorize the objectification of women. They have achieved this by, telling females that it is okay to be only perceived as a sexual object, whose sole job is to visually appeal to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Sexual Objectification: Lars And The Real Girl Sexual objectification is defined as the viewing of people solely as de–personalized objects of desire instead of as individuals with complex personalities, desires and plans of their own. This is done by thinking of a woman strictly only as their body, or body parts. Whereas sexual attraction is defined as the instincts, physiological processes, and activities connected with physical attraction or intimate physical contact between individuals. Lars and The Real Girl presented the exact dilemma of sexual objectification versus sexual attraction when a sex doll cyborg named Bianca was introduced as Lars' girlfriend: the power of a males fantasy plays a huge role in creating satisfying interactions and is a primary component of the human and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bianca represented sexual objectification rather than sexual attraction because she was treated as a commodity or object without regard to her personal and intellectual abilities and capabilities (even though she is a sex doll and doesn't possess these features as stated before, Gillespie wanted us to accept her as a "real girl"). Nevertheless, due to Lars objectifying Bianca it reduced her role as a women in society and it was seen that she was expected by Lars to be there for him for his every need and want. This was seen as Bianca's identity was developed and interlinked with Lars' own identity, ideals and fantasies: he made her a missionary (how nice of a sex doll), she parents died at a young age (much like Lars') and she can't have children (Lars has a fear of having children due to his abandonment during childhood). Her identity clearly reflected and shadowed Lars' own past/current life struggles, and seemingly so, Bianca did not appear on screen without Lars till a decent amount of time passes in the film: her social interactions were dependent on his ability to communication for her and about her (making up whatever he thought necessary for he ... • 37. Two Ways A Woman Can Get Hurt By Jean Kilbourne Scantily dressed women are like an opened box of cupcakes on the cafeteria table; difficult to cease thinking about. Are women, in today's society, mere sex objects and tools in the hands of advertisers, or is this a gross misrepresentation in the pursuit of profit? In the article, "Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt", by Jean Kilbourne, an award–winning author and educator, the idea about women being utilized to attract profits are brought to light. Advertising agencies' motives are, in essence, to successfully market and sell a product by whatever means necessary. However, of a greater concern, is the sexual violence in our culture towards women and children as highlighted by Kilbourne. In addition, she states that sexual violence is encouraged through advertisements, by making it appear as though it is an acceptable circumstance. That this phenomenon is tolerated in our culture is, indeed, a troubling thought. Nonetheless, Kilbourne leaves a distinct impression that this toleration may, sadly, be true. These advertisements, the ideas, and images portrayed have an undeniably negative impact on our culture as they serve to highlight stereotypes, dehumanize women as a sexual object or tool and, with a constant bombardment of these types of adverts, results in an indifference leading to victimization and possible violence that becomes almost commonplace. In her article, Kilbourne emphasizes advertisements and images that reinforce her examination of stereotypes in popular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Feminism Of Hip Hop And Rap Music Introduction: Hip Hop or Rap music is often related to themes of misogyny and objectification towards women (Weitzer and Kubrin 2009 ; Gourdine and Lemmons 2011). Ruby M. Gourdine and Brianna P. Lemmons specifically state that misogynistic themes began to gain prominence in the genre during the late 1980s. I would suggest that the prevalence of objectification and misogyny in hip hop could pose a threat to a positive self image for females, exposed to this form of media. What is objectification? The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy defines objectification, as "the seeing and/or treating a person, usually a woman, as an object(Papadaki, 2015). Rae Langton asserts two key aspects to feminist objectification theory which I believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both Minaj and Azalea are highly influential figures as a result of their success, within pop culture, and therefore the contents of the media they produce should have an impact on those which consume their work. Selection and Justification for Medium Of Analysis: For my analysis I specifically chose to investigate the top three most popular music videos from both Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea. I determined there popularity based on the number of views the official videos had on their respective Youtube Vevo Channels. Popularity of the videos was an important factor as this content would seemingly have the most far reaching impact, as a result of the scale of viewers. Further, I avoided selecting videos based on their direct relevance to my research question as doing so could impact the validity of my findings negatively, as videos choosen based on relevance could be influenced by preconceptual biases. Overall, music videos were selected as the medium of analyzation as videos are a visual representation of the topics and themes of a given song. In addition, music videos can provide a broadened and enriched creative concept in tangent with the original purely sonic form of the media. Methodology and Research Question: The content was analyzed through the following process; first watching the videos and making note of the number of times a male was portrayed in a ... • 39. Pornography: A Prominent and Detrimental Form of Sexual... One of the most prominent and detrimental forms of sexual objectification is in pornography, where it defines a woman's role as a sexual object for men to use freely (Insert Plato Citation). It was concluded that 88% of the scenes on porn contain acts of physical aggression, which can overexpose men into thinking that this sort of aggression is normal and raise their tolerance of violence (Insert PornStats Citation). It can further warp the minds of the watchers into thinking that this is what relationships and sex are truly like, when in reality many women are forced into the industry or are overly intoxicated to keep the entire experience feeling numb (Insert ThePinkCross Citation). Pornography also touches in on an even darker subject ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When it comes to the courtroom during a rape trial, there are some crooked proceedings that go on. Instead of looking solely at the case in front of them, it is now important for the people to take in consideration what the victims were wearing at the time of their assault, their levels of intoxication, and their past sexual experiences, all of which should not matter when a rape took place and there is a clear victim and a clear criminal. One of the most common arguments on behalf of the defendant is how the accuser was dressed when the rape or sexual assault happened. If the victim was wearing a short skirt or a revealing shirt she was obviously asking to be raped, right? Wrong. There has never been a certain appearance that makes someone more susceptible of being raped. They could be slender or overweight, have blonde or brown hair, be of any race, old or young, and more importantly, there has never been a set trend in how the victim was dressed. The only this matters is when there is a serial rapist who is only attacking people who have a specific appearance; however, this is due to past trauma and deals with matters that are more psychologically limited to that one perpetrator. Rape is an act of anger, sadism, and power or punishment (Insert Snopes Citation). Rapists are not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
