Foundation Portfolio Evaluation By Steven Pendleton 12 Aidan
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? I used a corner grabber as it would make the magazine stand out on a shelf and it lets people know how much the magazine is The mast head is in a large font to stand out against other magazines I placed the stories around the side of the magazine as the magazine s I looked at used this technique The opportunity of winning a prize may encourage people to buy the magazine The main/exclusive is in larger font than the other stories Standard barcode to make it look like an existing magazine
I moved the text around the image so would help draw the audiences attention to the image Slogan so people can remember the magazine. Magazines I looked at used this technique I used a wall on my front cover to make it look like the person in my magazine were where they would be naturally I created graffiti styled words to put on the wall to make it look like it is in a not well looked after area I used a grey colour scheme for the mast head and main stories as it is a simple colour which stands out well. Also grey could be seen as a more masculine colour so can help attract the male audience A chance to win something could attract new readers The person in my magazine wore a hoodie as this was the style I wanted for my front cover. It is stereotypical of clothing worn by artists of this style of music I chose this person in my magazine as he looked and dressed like the type of people you would expect to see in a rap magazine
Contents Page A list of rap artist to show the readers who is going to be in the magazine Page number on the picture makes a link to the story found on this page I made the editors mix a different font as the editor is a important person in producing a magazine so by changing the font makes if different and indicates his importance The main picture links to the main story The numbers did not follow a certain pattern e.g. 1 2 3 as magazines I looked at had adverts between stories so I tried to copy this by the numbers I used The words in the editors mix are moulded around the image. I used this technique as it makes the magazine look a professional standard and also makes the reader look at this picture
Double page I made the pictures behind the interview faded as magazines I researched used this technique so I did this to make the magazine look more professional Profile of the band members. Allows audience to find out more about the artists quickly I changed the colour of the writing to show questions being asked (black) and the answers (red). This would help the reader see the responses to the questions easily The grey colour fits in with the colour of the other titles The background is the same as the contents page, to give consistency and professionalism The members of the band wore different clothing to help the audience indicate the individuals in the band
How does my magazine appeal to social groups My magazine appeals to my target audience because of the way I have organised my picture as I have arranged the pictures in similar way to the magazines I researched The clothing he is wearing is typical of the genre of the magazine and the way the audience would dress so will help the audience associate with the band and the magazine
Who would be the audience for my media product My audience would be mostly male teenagers-young men as the design I used throughout the magazine would be more appealing to a male. The colours I used are associated more with males than females, this could help promote the magazine as a more male magazine also the music would be associated with younger people and with more males than females
How did you attract/address your audience I attracted my audience by putting my mast head in a large font to attract readers. I also used a corner grabber to attract the audiences attention I made sure my design was quite simple so it would be more likely to attract readers The colours used are more associated with males so would help promote the magazine towards males rather than females
What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why? My media distributer would be IPC media as my magazine would be based in the UK and IPC media is the leading UK consumer publisher I would also use this publisher as it producers a wide range of magazines from country life to NME so could increase the target audience My magazine would be the only rap magazine produced by IPC IPC Reaches almost two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men. This is almost 27 million UK adults so would enable the magazine to be open to lots of people. Also as IPC media has a web site so can attract a wider audience
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product When putting my magazine together I used various tools on photoshop. I mainly used the eraser tool to edit my pictures. I did this so I could put people in different environments. Also by changing the contrast of the images I could make images appear darker or lighter than the original image
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product I feel I have learnt a lot about what goes into a magazine and why it is done to attract a certain audience I feel I have improved my understanding to produce a magazine. When I did my preliminary work I did not know how to use photoshop so it wasn’t as good as I did not use many tools on photoshop to help improve the images and the overall presentation. This made it look very unprofessional as the quality of the photos taken were not very good and how I integrated the text with the images could have been improved
