1. What have you learned
from your audience
feedback?
Shanaé Chisholm
2. The importance of audience
feedback
When constructing our music video and supporting ancillary
tasks, we created our media texts with a broad target
audience in mind, young people. However, the term ‘young
people’ consists of a wide range of ages - 13-25 year olds -
therefore, it was vital that we conducted audience research
into what specific age bracket would consist of a suitable
audience for our products. Additionally, audience feedback
also contributes to improving the media texts and ensuring
that there is synergy across each text. Without audience
feedback being an element of our post production process,
we wouldn’t have been able finish with the products that we
have now.
3. Feedback on Sunrise - The music
video
The first survey that was conducted was in relation to our music video. After
re-editing Sunrise for the second time, it was important that we collected
audience research in order to know whether the changes that I had made
were effective or not.
The first question of the survey was:
What are your initial thoughts about this music video? (followed by a
comment box)
Through allowing our participants to describe their thoughts, we were able to
gain an insight into the impact that Sunrise had on those who had watched it.
Furthermore, it meant that, alongside the quantitative data that I had collected
from questions 2, 3 and 4, I would have qualitative data which helps to
validate the feedback, as trends can be found between them.
4. Feedback on Sunrise - The music
video
For example, here are some of the
comments. Most of the comments
praised the editing and camera work.
I then asked the question, ‘which element
of the music video did you like the most?’.
By asking this question, I would then be
able to see whether there was a correlation
between the comments and the answers to
this question. This question also meant
that I was able to identify the elements of
the video that people liked the least
5. Feedback on Sunrise - The music video
Although I could see the elements that our participants didn’t enjoy - as seen in the diagram on the previous
slide - I still chose to ask the second question ‘Which element of the music video did you like the least?’ and I
also added the option of ‘nothing’. A weakness of this question is the fact that I had added the ‘nothing’ option;
because it wasn’t an option for the previous question, it meant that participants of this survey who may not have
particularly liked a specific micro element of our music video, didn’t have the opportunity to express that view.
Nevertheless, the results for question 3 (shown below) still correlate with the response for question 2. Although
there are more responses for disliking none of the micro elements, there were more responses for disliking the
song and mise-en-scene than for disliking the editing and camera work. This supports the responses for
question 2, as mise-en-scene and the song choice, were the micro elements that were liked the least.
6. Feedback on Sunrise - The music video
The fourth question was:
This was a very useful question as it helped Donna and I to identify a suitable target
audience for our music video, below are the responses:
Overall, the results suggest that 19-25 year olds are the most suitable target audience. This
opinion is supported by the content of our music video. The song ‘Sunrise’ contains themes and
connotations - love, relationships, heartbreak - that wouldn’t be suitable for children aged5 -12.
Furthermore, the intimacy between the camera and Nora - our artist - could cause younger
audience meets to feel less engaged with the music video. Older audience members are more
likely to understand the themes of the song and appreciate the location that we chose to shoot in
- Camden. Therefore, the age bracket 19-25 males and females, appear to be a logical
demographic for the consumption of our music video.
7. Feedback on Sunrise - The music video
The last question consisted of a series of questions:
By asking his question, I was able to find out whether our
music video was engaging and whether our mise-en-scene,
cinematography, sound and editing choices created the right
style of music video for the genre of the song ‘Sunrise’
9. Feedback on Sunrise - The ancillary texts
This survey was constructed in order to find out where our ancillary texts worked well with our
music video to promote our artist. Below are the results of the question and some comments:
10. Feedback on Sunrise - Overall
Criticisms of the surveys:
- Although our feedback was encouraging, it didn’t directly outline what could
have been improved - This is probably a result of there not being a question that
asked for this type of feedback
- The demographic that was asked to complete our surveys, were between the
ages of 16-19; a cross-section of our desired target audience of young people -
Because we didn’t obtain feedback from people younger and older than this small
age bracket the feedback was similar. For example, it can be assumed that most 16-
19 year old enjoy pop, r&b and hip-hop music. ‘Sunrise’, is indie music and although
indie music is popular it can still considered a niche market song, and this could
explain why some participants disliked the song. An older audience member on the
other hand, might enjoy this song, as it is calm and relaxing.
In conclusion, our audience feedback provided confirmation that Donna and I had
constructed media texts that worked in conjunction with each effectively, and had
also helped us to identify a target audience.
