He was the leader of Indian Independence
movement
Gandhi was born on 2nd
october,1869,to a Hindu
Modh Baniya family in
Porbander , in British
Indian empire.

KaramchandUttamchandgandhi
Andhismother’s name was Putlibaigandhi .His father
Serverd as the diwan of Porbander state.

in his school.

He wed Kasturibai Makhanji kapadia in an arranged marriage
in may 1883.He was 14 years old at the time and kasturibai
was 14 years old at the time of their marriage of their
marriage .They had 4 childrens.
AT THE AGE OF 19 ,GANDHI
WENT TO ENGLAND AT 1888,TO
BECOME A LAWYER.

• Then he went to southAfrica to work
At a law firm . There he witnessed
Rampant acts of rasicm and
Discrimination.which angered him
Greatly.

After returning from
SouthAfrica to India in
1891,He began to practice in
Bombay.

These incident angered him and kindled in him
the spirit to fight for social justice.
He spent 20 years in country during
which he helped to found the NATAL
INDIAN CONGRESS.Which aimed at
molding the Indian community of
southAfrica into a unified political
force.
Gandhi returned to India in 1915.He joined in
the National Congress and by 1920 established
himself as a dominant figure in Indian political
Scenario.
His followers gave him the attribute
mahatma meaning Great Soul.He
called for all Indians to unite as one
irrespective of the division of
religion,caste and creed in country’s
fight for the Independence.
Gandhiwasarrestedon10march1922,triedforseditionand
imprisonedfortwoyears.

In1930,as a British government
imposed tax on the salt .Gandhi took a
400 kilometers march to seashore
called Dandhi then he made salt with
his own hands to show his protest
against the evil tank .He was joined by
thousands of followers in this ,symbolic
act of defiance against British rule.
This campaign one of the
most successful at upsetting
British hold on India ; British
responded by imprisoning
over 60,000 people.
THESECONDWORLDWAR BROKEOUT
IN1939ANDGANDHI THOUGHT IT TO BE
RIGHT TO FORCEA BRITISHERTOQUIT.
HE INVOKED A MOMENT IN1942
CALLED QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT.
He wasimpriosoned for two years and released
before the of the war in may1944.

So they leave India only but only after
dividing into two countries.
INDIA AND PAKISTAN
India got independence but
not in a peaceful way.
It led to violence clashes
between the Hindus and
Muslims.
Gandhi repeatedly went to hungerstrikes
to restore peace among the country.
On 30 January,1948 as gandhi completed a two day
hungerstrike in New Delhi he was shot dead by a Hindu
nationalist called Nathuram Godse at the age of 78
He established a principle called Gandhism and the
two pillars of gandhism are TRUTH AND
NONVIOLENCE
