Safety procedure of lab
1. Welcome To My Presentation
Presented by-
Md. Shahadot Hossain
Dept. of Petroleum and Mining Engineering
Jashore University of Science and Technology,
Jashore, Bangladesh
2. My Todays Topic is
“Introduction To The Engineering Laboratory
And Safety Procedure”
3. Laboratory
• A laboratory is a facility that provides controlled conditions.
• In which scientific or technological research, experiments,
and measurement may be performed.
4. Engineering Laboratory
• The Engineering Laboratory also a facility that provides controlled
conditions.
• It promotes the innovation and industrial competitiveness by
advancing measurement science, standards, and technology for
engineered systems in ways.
• It also enhance economic security and improve quality of life.
5. Elements of Safety Program
• The goal of the Laboratory Safety Program is to minimize the risk of
injury or illness to laboratory workers.
• By ensuring that they have the training, information, support and
equipment needed to work safely in the laboratory.
6. Laboratory Safety Procedure
Laboratory Safety:
• Lab safety is the protocols used in a lab to make the lab safe and
efficient.
• It usually comes along with a lot of other little things to make the lab
safe, like proper SOPs (standard operating procedures) and quality
control.
7. Laboratory Safety Procedure
The Chemical Hygiene Plan:
It provides certain procedures for health and safety standard operating
procedures (SOPs) that apply to laboratory work involving:
GENERAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES
• Understand the known hazards associated with the materials being
used.
• Be familiar with the location of emergency equipment such as fire
alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash, and shower stations
etc.
8. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
• Avoid distracting or startling other workers when they are handling
hazardous materials.
• Use equipment and hazardous materials only for their intended
purposes.
• Wear appropriate skin, eye and face protection.
• Avoid tasting or smelling chemicals
9. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
HEALTH AND HYGIENE
• Avoid direct contact with any hazardous material.
• Confine long hair and loose clothing and always wear footwear that
fully covers the feet.
• Do not mouth-pipette.
• Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling chemicals or
biological materials, before leaving the laboratory.
10. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
FOOD AND DRINK IN THE LABORATORY
• Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or applying of commercial products
in any laboratory area.
• Refrigerators and microwave ovens used for chemical or biological
storage or other laboratory use shall not be used for food storage or
preparation.
11. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
TRANSFERRING OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
• Carry glass containers in bottle carriers or other leak resistant,
unbreakable secondary containers.
• Transporting of hazardous waste between buildings within a campus
should be done with all necessary precautions to avoid spills or leaks.
12. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
COMPRESSED GASSES
• Cylinders with regulators must be individually secured.
• When storing or moving a cylinder, have the valve protection cap
securely in place to protect the stem.
• Use an appropriate cart to move cylinders.
• Always wear goggles or safety glasses with side shields when handling
compressed gases.
13. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
WORKING ALONE
• Do not work alone during procedures involving highly hazardous or
toxic chemicals or agents and/or dangerous equipment or
environments.
• It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator or Lab Supervisor to
assess activity of high and low or moderate risk.
14. Laboratory Safety Procedure(Cont.)
LABORATORY SECURITY
• For research labs, Principal Investigators are responsible for the
security of their laboratories.
• In teaching labs, the Department Chair is responsible for chemical and
equipment security.
• Laboratory Access: Faculty, staff and students will be provided with
access cards or brass keys upon approval by the Department Chair or
Dean of the College, or their designee.
