Charismatic Leadership Theory Of Leadership
I. Charismatic Leadership
Introduction to Charismatic Leadership
Charisma has been associated with leaders and leader attributes since time immemorial. Webster's
dictionary defines one meaning of charisma as a divinely inspired gift, grace, or talent, as for
prophesying, healing, and etc. As the definition suggests, the attribute of charisma has long been
associated with religious leaders. Charisma was not formally associated with secular leaders or a
secular charismatic theory of leadership until Max Weber–a German sociologist–wrote of it in that
context in 1947 (Bryman, Collinson, Grint, Jackson, & Uhl–Bien, 2011, p. 86).
Since Weber's first suggestions of a charismatic theory of leadership, many others have built upon
his work. Some felt that a charismatic theory of leadership should remain within the confines of a
religious context. As more social, political, and organizational scholars adopted and built upon
Weber's work, the religious–only context fell by the wayside. Before proceeding further, the tenets
of charismatic leadership theory must be explained.
Tenets of Charismatic Leadership Theory Researchers have proposed several characteristics of
leaders described as 'charismatic'. The widely accepted characteristics of charismatic leaders are
(Bryman et al., 2011, p. 90–91):
(1) Critical of the status quo.
(2) Sensitivity to subordinate needs and abilities.
(3) Able to recognize deficiencies in the present context.
(4) Characterized by their strategic

Leadership Styles For A Leadership Essay
Introduction When I think about the type of leader I would like to be, there is one supervisor that
always comes to mind because of the positive environment she cultivated. In researching the
different leadership styles for this assignment, I believe that this is the style that she used with her
staff. I was interested in learning more about transformational leadership and how I can cultivate
this style in the way that I lead my current team as well as the way in which I lead future teams.
Transformational leadership is a leadership style that promotes change as well as improves
performance in the organization as a whole as well as on the individual employee level (Phaneuf,
Boudrias, Rousseau, & Brunelle, 2016). James MacGregor Burns first introduced transformational
leadership in his book titled Leadership that he authored in 1978. Burns defined transformational
leadership as leadership that stems from one's core unchanging values and beliefs. Burns believed
that transformational leaders not only bring together their followers, but also positively influence
their follower's values and beliefs in a way that brings about positive change (Humphreys &
Einstein, 2003).
Transformational leaders are able to inspire employees to work towards a common goal by changing
their expectations, motivation and perception of why they are doing the work. Transformational
leaders cultivate a commitment from their employees, which encourages them to put aside self–
interest to work

Leadership As A Charismatic Leader
Numerous of leaders especially in the church are considered charismatic. Before the 1980's,
charisma was not a major topic of discussion. The Charismatic approach is measured to reflect a
particular kind of leader. They are usually strong self–confident individuals that portray
competency. Their followers tend to mimic the goals and leadership style of the charismatic leader.
They are gifted in articulating their ideas, "plans and goals to others while creating an ambiance that
says, do as I do. They can articulate a compelling or captivating vision and can arouse strong
emotions in followers. Despite the controversy about the originality of the charismatic leader, they
are effective in the church, politics, and the business ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The paper clarifies this thought by sharing the beginning of many notable individuals' leadership
style and how they matriculated to the office of the President of the United States and renowned
Civil Rights Leaders. The Christian Worldview is shared that good leadership is defined one's
relationship with God and how we treat one another.
It provides information about biblical leadership such as David, Jesus, and Paul whose leadership
approach is charismatic and remains effective today in many churches. It further talks about the
charismatic approaches of men like Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, Barak Obama who
swept the nation off their feet because of the resounding eloquent speeches that many young and old
now recite and hold true to their hearts. Moreover, this paper speaks about some twenty–first
century charismatic leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Barak Obama, and Bill Clinton. Details
are provided to show that Charisma is a process, which links the traits of the charismatic leader to a

Charismatic Leaders Born or Made?
First and foremost, charisma in the Greek means "divinely inspired gifts," only God can give these
kinds of gifts. Because high self–confidence and strong conviction in one's beliefs is a given factor
for the charismatic leader, I argue that they are born, with leadership abilities that require

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Charismatic Leadership
Pros and Cons of the Charismatic Leadership
Pros of Charismatic Leadership
Usually in the work environment it is more pleasant for employees to work with a manager or boss
who has the verbal and listening skills. If a manager or a leader has the communication skill and
they are able to use the skill to make the employees feel important and a part of successful
organization will help to motivate them towards the better performance and productivity in the
organization. Charismatic leaders motivate and encourage the employees even if the situation is
worst and supports them (Faber, 2016).Charismatic leaders in an organization is like a catalyst that

But how can a charismatic leader motivates others to follow and how can others effect on the leader
to lead. Once again it is leader and followers exchange relationship.
According to Howell, "without followers, there are plainly no leaders or leadership" (2006).
Furthermore, followers are more important because if they do not follow, there is not leader
(Howell, 2006). Howell mentioned that in order to understand the process of leadership it is
important to explore the behavior of the followers (2006). He also added that in many followers
perception a charismatic leader has a "heroic" personality and capable to persuade followers in a
group or organization(Howell, 2006).The followers believe that their leader has power and ability or
think him or her mighty (Howell, 2006). While this is exaggeration in the perception and this can
also lead in a very different and wrong path. If a leader's vision is negative, than the followers will
follow without any questions and their actions can have worst consequences on followers (Conger,

What Makes A Good Leader?
What makes a manager of an organization one that can be properly characterized as an authentic
leader? Furthermore, what makes the people who report to that manager motivated to not only
accomplish the needed tasks and meet the required deadlines, but also to go above and beyond that
to simply do the right thing, or, for the benefit of others in the organization? I will demonstrate
through this post that I believe the one characteristic that makes a very good leader a great (and truly
effective) one is when they display authentic leadership. I will discuss two specific methods that
characterized my manager's display of authenticity in his leadership style as an accounting manager:
ethics and trust, and other–centeredness (described by Robbins and Judge as, "socialized
charismatic leadership") (2011).
Authentic Leadership through Ethics and Trust
What role do ethics and trust play when we determine the effectiveness of a leader? Robbins and
Judge point out that there are some scholars that argue that the picture of effective leadership is only
completed when there is consideration of the role of ethics and trust (Robbins and Judge, 2011).
From witnessing the day–to–day activities of my accounting manager for the past four years, I
would have to concur with these scholars. When the most important goals of a team, especially one
in the realm of finance, are to seek and report what is true, what is accurate, and most important,
what is right – over and above what

Leadership Theories Of Leadership And Leadership
Introduction
The purpose of this essay is to identify and analyze two leadership theories in regards to how they
contribute to helping leaders, lead and compare and distinguish the difference. This essay will
explore 2 main theories of leadership covered in the unit, which are charismatic leadership and
transformational theory. This two theories are well known in the filed of leadership. This essay will
illustrate leaders who acquire these two main theories and how they used it effectively to achieve
the objectives and goals to become a great leader. Leadership is an important skill to have when
being a manager or even in your day–to–day life depending on the person you are. Leadership helps

Charismatic theory can help leaders be more assertive; its behavioral quality is easier to acquire and
develop easily. The way charismatic theory can help leaders lead is having charm which is the
foundation of the theory, it's Appeal is valuable for rousing others, driving a group, or showing and
creating individuals, or being a trend–setter or a trust raiser. Charismatic leaders are prone to show
up when the social circumstance makes individuals feel troubled. (Jacobsen & House, 2001, p. xx)
This shows that charismatic leaders are adjustable towards being a leader in the workplace or a
social aspect being very flexible. The Charming aspect of the this theory can have constructive
outcomes on individual results (e.g., inspiration and self–regard, eagerness to go past desires and
participate in organizational work (Campbell, Ward, Sonnenfeld, & Agle, 2008, p. 556–568). This
theory can help leaders be more approachable and create an environment where both leaders and
followers succeed in the work place or the social side.
A transformational leader treasures the feelings and respect, the loyalty among their followers and
workers and emphasizes the significance of commitment with projects and group work. (Veiseh,
Esfandyar, Mohsen, & Vahid, 2014, p. 113–124). Transformational leaders have a kind of initiative
style that can motivate positive changes in the individuals who take after.

Mahatma Gandhi : The British Rule Of India
Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi was born during the British rule in India on October 2, 1869. Gandhi
in the year of 1888 was sent to England to pursue law, where he developed interest in the
philosophy of nonviolence as expressed in the holy Bhagawad Gita, a scared text of Hindu
scriptures. However after passing the bar, he found little accomplishment in his attempt to practice
law in India, which is when he accepted a position in South Africa, where he assisted on a lawsuit.
(Mohandas Gandhi, 2015)
In South Africa, he involved himself in an attempt to end discrimination against the minority Indians
residing there. During this course, he developed "satyagarha", which translates into "soul force", or
an approach of non–violence resistance, against the British governments in South Africa. In the
years following the World War I, Gandhi became a leading figure in India for his struggle to achieve
independent from the mighty British rule. His willingness to tolerate the punishments and the prison
confinement earned him the title of " Mahatama", a "great soul" in India in 1914. (Mohandas
Gandhi, 2015)
Gandhi was also majorly known for his ascetic lifestyle and he regularly dressed himself in a
loincloth and shawl. He was imprisoned several times during his pursuit of non–violence. For
instance, in the year of 1914 when the British gunned down the peaceful Indian protesters, Gandhi
and the citizens of India realized the need for self–rule, which is when Gandhi in the early 20s,

Dr. Martin Luther King
Even though Martin Luther King Junior and Mahatma Gandhi both struggled, I think that the
charisma in them influenced social change, because of their tactics used, like non–violence. Martin
Luther King Junior and Gandhi both functions as charismatic leaders and influenced others with
their fascinatingly positive attitudes. It was hard for them to get there message 's and world view 's
across but they remained strong and preserved through their struggles, no matter how tough things
got. Gandhi transmitted his message without resorting to violence and Martian Luther King Junior
learned from Gandhi and shows why non–violence is key. Charisma is the social energy that arches
between a leader and a community (Kripal 212). This definition of charisma is better for Martin
Luther King Junior. He showed so much charisma in his motivational speeches he gave to huge
crowds, some even memorable to this day. Max Weber incorporated both psychological and
sociological elements in his definition of charisma (Barnes 1). He defined charisma as a certain
quality of an individual 's personality by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and
treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or
qualities (Barnes 1). Now I wouldn 't say that either of these leaders are supernatural or superhuman,
but they do have exceptional qualities that they set the apart from the average individual. Some
examples of these qualities would be both had a

The Effect Of Executive Peak Performance
Research shows successful leaders achieve peak performance, even in uncertain times, because they
are charismatic, conditioned to accomplish, and they get people to take action; yet there is a dark
side that can profoundly affect those closest to them.
Peak performance is a superior level of functioning. Business leaders who achieve peak
performance have integrated sustained accomplishment in their personalities. The individual
becomes fully absorbed and focused, whether dealing with a task or another person and yet
continues to maintain a strong sense of self. The interplay between action and behavior creates an
unrestrained flow resulting in peak performance (Privette, 1999).
The impact of executive peak performance produces a host of tangible results from creating greater
organizational efficiency to improving profitability, even in times of adversity. We will learn these
kinds of results have their roots in behavioral psychology. Additionally, research has proven that
when charisma is added to the mix, achievement skyrockets. However, there is a dark–side to
charisma that can and does produce negative impacts on others. We will examine these impacts, as
well as what effective leaders can do to ensure they lead responsibly allowing those around them to
maintain a heathy sense of self. As to what drives leaders, we must first look at what motivates
people in general. For this, we turn to one of the most widely recognized experts on human
motivation,

Educational Leadership Styles Paper
The capacity and implementation of various educational leadership styles has been critical to the
organizational and instructional makeup of educational institutions since their inception. Various
types of leadership have developed over the past 60 years and unique trends have emerged in the
pursuit of creating and implementing changes in process and philosophy; specifically, improving
teacher collaboration. Leadership styles frequently identified as charismatic, transactional,
transformational, shared/distributed, and self/laissez–faire have emerged at the forefront of
educational leadership theory. The role of the administrator (principal) in secondary schools and
their exhibited leadership styles set the tone for staff and students in their ... Show more content on

However, this is not always the case as some studies showed employee uncertainty and resistance
against this type of discretion at work (Cordery, Morrison, Wright & Wall, 2010; Maynard, Mathieu,
Marsh, and Ruddy, 2007). As a result, follower's perceptions of leaders might not always be
positive, and they raise the question of whether empowering leadership might sometimes be
perceived as laissez–faire leadership, leading to a less effective leadership perception (Wong &

Transformational Leadership : Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps
the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style
was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to
be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader
when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in
each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most
versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs.
A transformational leader is one who strongly motivates their followers and uses the current
conflicts to help them build their connection with, and support from, their followers. Using current
events to relate to followers shows that the leader cares for the followers, shares their concerns, and
is willing to help. Martin Luther King Jr. used the civil rights movement to connect with his
followers, partially because the movement affected him, but largely because it affected millions of
others like him. By establishing this connection with his followers, he was able to motivate them to
act. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder
of consensus."(Schladweiler) With this statement, Dr. King was publicly stating that leaders do not
try and join movements, but rather, motivate

Leaders Like Martin Luther King, Jr.
Leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill and Hitler have one thing
in common; the word charisma is usually attached to them when people describe their
characteristics as a leader. Charisma defined by the online Merriam–Webster Dictionary is "a
personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (as a
political leader); a special magnetic charm or appeal" (Merriam–Webster, 2014). The Oxford
Dictionary states that charisma is "Compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in
others" (Oxford University Press, 2014).
Max Weber (known as the father of sociology) first introduced the concept of charisma with the
relationship to power and authority. He described charisma as a personality trait that sets her/him
apart from the masses. The charismatic individual is deemed to have supernatural, superhuman, or
to possess exceptional power that is not readily accessible to a regular person (Weber, 1947). Weber
further believed that charisma was the result of a social crisis and that these leaders have
extraordinary appeal because they "...emerge with the radical vision that provides the solution to the
crisis" (Barbuto, 1997, p. 689). For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. arose in the civil rights
movement as a beacon of change, equality and eventually for peace.
The power of the charismatic leader is often defined by how the followers perceive and act.
Researchers believe that the leader

Dark Side Leadership And How They Can Get Into Power
Dark–side leadership creates problems for organisations and the individual, the most common form
of this being derailment. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be $2.7
million. This essay is going to focus on what dark–side leadership is and how they can get into
power when the consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be discussed
and alternative explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must be
adopted.
The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the
individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48–
82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of 'dark–side'
leadership lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of this
essay will focus on personality explaining dark–side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is important to
look at leadership emergence with regards to dark–side traits as proposed by Hogan and Hogan
(1997). Dark–side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in excess and not
traits in which they are lacking (Hogan & Hogan, 2001). They identified 11 subclinical traits that
can be present in dark–side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan Development Survey. They
are termed 'subclinical' because they are perceived to be less prominent than clinical traits – but still
measure the degree to which a

Transformational Leadership
A leader is someone who has the ability to influence followers that have the same determination and
outcomes for change as they do. Not all leaders are famous people, or people in high positions of
power. There are leaders all around us. They are just ones that possess leadership qualities that not
all people have. This does not mean though that they are born leaders. This also doesn't mean that
all leaders are good leaders. They can also harm society, like Hitler. People build their leadership
qualities through life experiences. Great leaders are able to effectively influence their subordinates.
This influencing is usually done by using their authority. Most people tend to believe and trust in
people in authority because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that it is easier for people to follow a person that inspires them. A person with a vision and
passion can achieve great things, both very valuable traits to have. If I can inject enthusiasm and
energy into myself and others, many great things can be achieved. In the future when I am in a
leadership position I want to be able to develop my followers by making sure that they possess the
passion and energy needed to work towards our organization's common goal. I want to care about
them and make sure that they succeed at what they want to accomplish. Working for a
transformational leader should be a wonderful uplifting experience.
Transformational leadership starts with the development of a vision. This should be a view of the
future that will grab the attention, excite and convert potential followers. Once the vision has been
developed, you will have to constantly sell the vision. This will probably take a lot of energy and
commitment, because few people will automatically believe in your vision. A transformational
leader should take every opportunity available to convince others to climb on their "bandwagon." In
order to create followers, the transformational leader has to be careful in creating trust, and their
personal integrity is a critical part in what they are selling. Therefore, they are selling themselves as
well as the vision. "The common

Non Effective Followers And The Groups Of Followers,...
The four groups of followers operated as alienated followers, sheep, yes people, and survivors, all
lacking the key factor of being able to succeed without strong leadership. Sheep lack initiative and
sense of responsibility, while yes people refuse to be against the leader (Wren 195). Alienated
followers tend to think more independently but are prone to group think. They are normally
dissatisfied and/or resentful. Any of these three groups can at any time merge into the survivor
group because this group of followers operate under the "slogan "better safe than sorry"" (Wren
195). If a leader is surrounded by these types of followers, it is more difficult for him to be a good

Transformational leadership is used by a leader to "appeal to the moral values of followers in an
attempt to raise their consciousness about ethical issues and to mobilize their energy and resources
to reform institutions" (Yukl "Charismatic" 261). Pseudotransformational leadership refers to
transformational leadership, but when the leader is "self–consumed, exploitive, power–oriented,
[and] possess[es] warped values" (Hinz). When a leader appeals to followers' self–interest and offers
an exchange of benefits, the leader is utilizing transactional leadership (Yukl "Charismatic" 261).
When first studying Jim Jones, one would think that he led through transformational leadership;
however, he actually leds through pseudotransformational leadership. Since Jones preached about
equality and accepting all men, his messages seemed consistent with ethical morals. He also formed
a lively church setting, where people would dance, jump, run around, yell, and scream. This stirred
emotions in most members and even visitors, and is often talked about in movies (McCloud). One
would think that people would be tired after all the commotion, but, on the contrary, people felt
revived and energized after services. Jones finally showed his true style when he moved part of his
congregation to Guyana. At this location, Jones

Frank Lucas: The Nefarious American Gangster
Frank Lucas–a vile, disgusting, and corrupt individual–used his knowledge of business to propel
him into the infamous position of the American gangster. He was a very intelligent individual who
buttressed many aspects of an executive leader. Thus, after Bumpy Johnson dies, Frank becomes
aware of what he must do to ensure that Bumpy's business operates as usual. It is here that Frank
transforms from his somewhat subservient yet taciturn behavior into the executive leadership
position of an infamous and democratic gangster. Through the character of Frank Lucas, the movie
referred to the leadership concepts of power motive, business knowledge, and the dark sides of
charismatic leadership.
Soon after Bumpy dies, Frank becomes captivated by power such that it consumes him and forces
him to commit his wicked acts. He is a stern character who believes that "you are who you are in
this world" and that you must either be "somebody or nobody." Thus, he chooses to be the quietest
and strongest person in the room. Frank's power is personalized meaning he seeks it to further his
own interests (Dubrin, 47, 50). Like any power driven leader, he cared little about others and acted
with vigor and determination to exert his authority and get the highest quality heroine on the streets.

Leadership Styles And Activism Of African American Women
When asked to identify important leaders of the civil rights movement, the name that most often
comes to one's mind is Martin Luther King Jr. Others may mention James Forman, Ralph
Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, James Farmer, Andrew Young, or Bayard Rustin. Notably missing
are the names of women leaders. Rarely would Ella Baker, Septima Clark, Gloria Richardson, Daisy
Bates, or Fannie Lou Hamer be identified. The absence of the women leaders of the civil rights
movement from history is not because there were not any, but because the type of leadership they
performed is often overlooked in favor of the men leaders, due in part to gender bias.
This paper will examine the leadership styles and activism of African–American women in the civil
rights movement in comparison to the more widely–known and prominent male leaders. It
challenges the notion that aside from a few well–known leaders, African–American women's roles
in the movement consisted solely of behind–the–scenes and unimportant clerical work that is
incomparable to male leadership. By examining what constitutes leadership, this paper concludes
that while some African–American women activists may exhibit typical leadership styles parallel to
male leaders, many others carried out leadership in atypical forms. The assorted types of leadership
and activism African–American women contributed to the movement are determined to be on the
same level of influence as the male leaders' contributions.

The Leadership Theory Of Leadership
The leadership module is a very wide and dynamic one. There are several definitions for leadership
as Stodgill (1974, p12) states. Seeman (1960, p3) defines leadership as the acts of a person which
influence other people towards a shared direction. Influence is a vital aspect of leadership as the
person who leads should have the charisma and the ability to influence others, otherwise leadership
is non–existent. However that does not mean that leaders are better people than their followers.
Hollander (1992, p7) explains that leaders and followers should be understood in relation to each
other. Leaders and followers both have a mutual purpose and attention to common goals.

The group I was in was with Gary, Suwin and Matt, the same members from the previous term.
Firstly, we looked pseudo–transformational leadership style. This leadership method is where
leaders violate the ethical requirements of transformational leadership and the leaders have certain
characteristics such as being self–consumed, exploitive and power orientated with values that they
believed should be followed (Bass and Steidlmeier 1999). Bass and Steidlmeier (1999, p163) also
suggest that leaders who adopt this method are more focused on their own interests rather than the
interests of others. Barling et al. (2008), Christie et al. (2011), Eisenbeiß and Boerner (2013) and
Kark et al. (2003) believe that pseudo–transformational leadership style exploit transformational
behaviors to encourage their followers' unconditional loyalty to and dependence on the leader.
However none of us from the group believed that we should adopt this approach due to the unethical
morals of this approach. Therefore we moved on to the next leadership style which was the
transformational leadership. Downton (1973) was the one who came with this term.
Transformational leadership is when the leader engages with others and helps to raise motivation
and morality for both leader and followers. Burns (2003) explains that transformational leadership is

The Election Of The 2016 Presidential Election
The 2016 presidential election had been a contentious one even before the primaries began. A divide
within parties and between the public grew increasingly evident over the past year, ultimately
leading to a candidate with no prior political experience beating out a candidate with forty–plus
years on her resume. Scandals plagued both campaigns, however, polls and positive media coverage
stayed firmly in Hillary Clinton's favor throughout the duration of the election process with Donald
Trump even claiming that the polls were "rigged" and the media was biased. While the veracity of
these claims cannot be verified, today we know that the polls were wrong and the media that all but
handed the election to Clinton were wrong as well. So how did Trump, someone many said would
need a miracle to make it to the White House, beat all the odds and his seemingly strong opponent
to become President? Though pundits are still struggling to understand it, the rise of Donald Trump
shouldn't have surprised anyone. For the pioneering German sociologist Max Weber, it would have
been entirely predictable, a classic example of the politics of charisma.
Weber posited that modern political systems are normally rational and bureaucratic. They are
managed by trained professionals who deliver public services according to a set of clear rules. They

Charismatic Leadership And Transformational Leadership
Charisma theory is described as a "gift", or a unique superiority of an individual character. This is
set by an advantage of which the individual is set apart from the common man and treated as a gem
with supremacies (Charismatic vs. Transformational, 2011). Whereas the transformational theory is
defined as leaders who enthuse followers to use their own egocentricities to benefit the organization
(Charismatic vs. Transformational, 2011). These leaders also possess a gift of having a great impact
on their followers (Charismatic vs. Transformational, 2011). Theories are apprehended around the
world and almost every aspect of life possesses a theory behind them, whether there is action or
unfolding someone's personality. There are two leadership theories that will be conveyed,
Charismatic Leadership and Transformational Leadership. Behind each theory is a founder that
explains these concepts, James MacGregor Burns the founder of Transformational leadership
(Conger, n.d.) and Karl Emil Maximilian "Max" Weber the founder of Charismatic leadership
("Transformational," n.d.). Over the course of time, movies have been made, demonstrating these
theories, for example an old classic "The Lion King" ("Leadership Movies," 2008). This movie
coveys both MacGregor Burns and Karl Emil Maximilian "Max" Weber's theories.
On August 3, 1918 MacGregor Burns was born in Melrose, Massachusetts ("James MacGregor,"

Jamestown Massacre Analysis
The Jamestown massacre was a huge mass "suicide" in the United States. The people involved were
in the religious group, led by Jim Jones. Jims Jones was a charismatic leader. This man was very
influential and knew how to persuasive people. His following grew and that made his religious
movement grow. Jim Jones was a strong leader and a charismatic leader. A charismatic leader is a
person that is a hero to others. They have great leadership skills and have a persona that stands out
from others. A charismatic leader can be good or evil. The frightening part is that they can earn a
following quickly because of their persona.
Charisma is just a trait and means to have a vibrant persona. The difference between a charismatic
leader and a normal leader is that a charismatic leader is more charming and is usually more
persuasive than a regular leader.
Jim Jones gave the people what they wanted to hear. He would help them try and find their better
self. That is why he had such a rapid following. Many at the moment thought that the government
were not taking care of them so he made them felt like they were going to be take care of. Also he
made them feel like they had a community that they were not alone. He would manipulate people by

buttressed many aspects of an executive leader.
Therefore, Frank uses his power to serve as his motivation and achievement motive and to propel
his tenacious, resilient, and autonomous personality.
A powerful leader who possesses drive and tenacity is

Essay On Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership consists of four components, being charisma or idealized influence,
inspiration and vision, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration (Marshall, 2011). All of
these components are of equal importance when employing transformational leadership, but the
component that I find most personally applicable is charisma or idealized influence. As a student
nurse, my surroundings are always changing, one moment I am on the labor and delivery unit with a
group of peers and the next week I am with a totally different group of peers in a mental health
facility. Being surrounded by an ever–changing group with ever changing goals and objectives I feel
as though it is a challenge to emerge as a leader. It is my personal belief that in order to become a
leader, some sort of personal connection must be forged, and this can be difficult with a revolving
schedule. Conversely, it is also my opinion that despite how well one knows the people that they are
surrounded by, if one knows themselves and their beliefs and values, their charisma will be evident.
Being charismatic is about being a role model and inspiring others to follow based on the personal
qualities that one exemplifies (Marshall, 2011). A charismatic leader knows who they are and where
they are going and does everything with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the modern constant changes business environment, company needs to change constantly to
remain competitive in the market. If not, the company will be facing survival risk. There are no

clueless on how to rectify the problems. He has delegated the task to Erica Wilson to review CCC's
operations and oversee organization changes. Under her control and management, new central

The role of the "Leader" I believe sometimes relates to the individual to delegate the set goals or
mission to the followers and believe the "Followers" have the belief and confidence in the "Leader"
in how he/she has decided to execute the set goals and missions. Therefore the leader has to demand
structure and organise how the followers must or should complete the task laid out to attain the
success or victory of the mission. From a scientific perspective the only measurement tool here is
the success or victory of the mission, regardless of ethics or principles, step by step quantifiable
measurement, morals and wider impacts. Also the question into, is the "Leader" acting in the best of
everyone's interest, is there compassion and total unbiased approach and is there room for the
"Follower" to openly call into question the methods employed and approach; ultimately is the leader
able to take on–board concerns and alternative views to change/alter the course /route in delivering
the success needed. Some of the definitions of the "Leader" I have observed reads; A leader has a
vision. Leaders see a problem that needs to be fixed or a goal that needs to be achieved. It may be
something that no one else sees or simply something that no one else wants to tackle. Whatever it is,
it is the focus of the leader's attention and they attack it with a single–minded determination. From a

Analysis Of A Management Strategy : The Charisma Myth Essay
Analysis of a Management Strategy: The Charisma Myth
Berenice Escareno

Introduction
Growing up, all of us had some sort of rule of thumb that either ruled in our households or school
lives. We were told to do things a certain way because it has always been accomplished that way
and never questioned if there was a better way in doing it. There are numerous ways in managing
complex situations, so why do people believe management theory has only one correct way of
executing it? Management theory has a very long timeline in history in which there have been many
different management concepts, such as the scientific management theory created by F.W Taylor,
which was more about production in contrast to Peter Drucker whose management theory consists
of customer service. For this reason, it is extremely important to study and analyze the different
management theories in order to see which practices are best suited for a specific workplace, person,
and/or work communities. The book chosen for this report is The Charisma Myth, published by
Penguin Group in New York 2012. The author Olivia Fox Cabane, has had much experience
lecturing about management theory in prestigious colleges such as Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and
MIT. She is also a very well recognized columnist in the Huffington post as well as in Forbes
magazine. Cabane is presently the Director of Innovative Leadership for Stanford's StartX program.

The Pros And Cons Of A Charismatic Leader
When we think we meet a charismatic person, what do we actually mean by charismatic? Who's the
most charismatic individual we've ever met? And is a person still charismatic once we know them
intimately or is charisma reserved to distant leaders? All these questions lead us to a positive
connotation of the word "charisma": the charismatic person is impressive in its speeches and the
image it leaves in the audience's mind.
The Oxford dictionary defines charisma as a compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire
devotion in others. Yet, to describe the leadership of politicians such as Stalin and Hitler in the 21st
century, we have no other way than to be horrified by their actions. Thus, in my exposé, I will try to
keep an objective point of view in my analysis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hitler also fostered anti–semitism by blaming Jews as the reason why Germany lost the 1914–1918
war. Once more, Hitler used the scapegoating of the Jews by the middle class, but brought it to a
more intense level, charging the Jews with all the wrongs of Germany. Stalin's cult of personality
Stalin's approach was to appear as a Godlike figure to its citizens. The great strength of Stalin was to
be seen as heroic, although he murdered hundreds of Soviets.
His approach is very different from Hitler's in the sense that he did not appear as a fighter but rather
as a protector. His alias, Father of Nations, conveys this idea of a reachable patron. He was also
referred to as Comrade Stalin, which sets him on an equal footing with the Soviets, whereas Hitler's
leadership was marked by a greater hierarchy, as illustrates his nickname Führer (the Chief).
→ Although the two leaders' die–hard attitude lead to a certain reticence among the masses, this
feeling is soon overwhelmed by a sentiment of nationalism in times of wars or

Charismatic And Transformational Theory : The Lion King
Referring to the movie "The Lion King" a young prince was born in the Pride Lands of Africa by the
name of Simba, he was a curious little one, which led to numerous problems for himself, his father
and the land. Simba was the son of a prodigious King named Mufasa and together they made a
wonderful team, nevertheless all does not follow well for Simba and Mufasa. King Mufasa had
perished in a massive stampede and Simba was left to believe that he was the reason for his father's
death, thanks to his uncle Scar. Scar desired the kingdom for himself and this was a great plan to rid
both the king and prince. In this paper two theories are presented; Charismatic and transformational
theory which Mufasa and Simba has demonstrated perfectly. The paper goes on to provide a history
about the theories and demonstrate how individually these characters portrayed these theories and
how they connect to each other.
Charismatic and Transformational Leadership
Theory and History
Charisma theory is described as a "gift", or a unique superiority of an individual character. This is
set by an advantage of which the individual is set apart from the common man and treated as a gem
with supremacies (Charismatic vs. Transformational, 2011). Whereas the transformational theory is
defined as leaders who enthuse followers to use their own egocentricities to benefit the organization
(Charismatic vs. Transformational, 2011). These leaders also possess a gift of having a

Charismatic Leadership Style
What is a leader? What are the true qualities of a leader? Am I a leader, or are you a leader? Over
the years, I believe that the meaning of the word 'leader' has be degrader to almost nothing. These
days, everyone is calling themselves a leader, but do they really understand leadership or have what
it takes to lead. In an article, written by F. John Reh, entitled 'What is a Leader', he defined a leader
to be "a person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to
make it happen" (Reh, F. John. 2014). In the area of health care ... Show more content on

Some of these disadvantages include that it may develop reliance on the leader by the employees.
Some employees may feel that without the leader's guidance or assistance the organization will not
succeed. "This saddles the leader with a huge responsibility for both keeping the company running
and motivating the staff" (Frost, Shelley. 2016). Another disadvantage is that some charismatic
leaders may be lacking or lose clarity. It is believed that "charismatic leader sometimes gets so
caught up with their control and are unable to clearly see potential dangers with the company"
(Frost, Shelley. 2016). This is because of the high level confidence they hold within themselves. It

Cults In Research Paper
There are close patterns of interaction among cult members, as well as retaliatory actions on the part
of the host culture toward them all of which create an even more clearly defined religiously deviant
subculture for cults. Cults' leader is likely to be solitary, powerful, charismatic figure. Many
characterize cults as lacking a formal organizational structure and as largely controlled in an
authoritative manner by their leader. Cults are often defined and identified by the names of their
leaders, at least in the popular media. Barnes and Becker said Charismatic domination is established
through the extraordinary qualities of the leader. Law is not the source of authority; on the contrary,

Greil and Rudy have noted that many organizations are best conceived as parareligious or quasi–
religious because they have mixed characteristics, some of which are sacred and others secular.
However, as novel forms of religious identity, cults are likely to be severely challenged by
mainstream culture. Pfeifer found that the vast majority of college students in his sample described
an average cult member only in negative terms; not a single student used positive terms. He divided
them into three groups and had them to respond to one of the three vignettes describing three
groups, but each was selected based upon popular notions of alleged authoritarian structures and
near–total environmental control of members, who are kept isolated for the wider society. The
vignettes were identical except for the groups specified that were Marines, Moonies, or priests. The
vignette described a typical recruit, Bill, at the relevant group facility. He said that when Bill was at

Charismatic Leadership : A Charismatic Leader
Charismatic Leadership Charismatic leadership uses "impression management to deliberately
cultivate a certain relationship with group members" (Dubrin,2010, p. 68). They create a positive
vision for their followers and these followers will work diligently to make the visions of the
charismatic leader come true. This leader can influence external stakeholders by becoming the
symbol of the company or cause he represents. "Charismatic leaders can transform organizations
through their ability to see opportunities and their willingness to implement unique strategies. They
bring solutions to organizational problems and hope to organizational members." (Fogarty, 2011)
This paper will discuss charismatic relationship and identify the potential for that characteristic this
writer might possess. Through researching the topic, this question will also be addressed: Does this
writer even WANT to be considered a charismatic leader? Characteristics of Charisma There are
various characteristics of charismatic leaders. They possess the ability to influence others through
their own desirable "traits and characteristics" (Dubrin, 2010, p. 69). They also influence others
because of the skills, abilities, and knowledge they possess. Another characteristic is their ability to
get their workers excited about their work and "experience job involvement" (Dubrin, 2010, p. 70).

diamond. In fact, in 1955, there was a leader named Lucius Caelum who was considered as a
prophet because he claimed that the goddess bequeaths him the ability to detect excess darkness or
light in people. As he convinced people into believing his claim, more people began to join
Diamantism and conform to Lucius. Charisma is extremely especially for Lucius because without

there, Lucius began managing and constructing the institution with his view on Diamantism. He

despite there not being any electricity available, the community is livable and is mostly an area to
worship the diamond and learn about the religion of Diamantism.

Seven Habits Profile: An Evaluation of my Personal Leadership Style I have always thought of
myself as a strong, motivated leader, and based on the results of my seven habits profile I can
confirm that there will always be room to grow. There are areas of the seven habits profile in which
I thought I excelled, but in reality those are the areas that I need to develop the most. I have always
seemed to complete whatever task I may have had in mind, and was always successful in the path
that I had taken to get there. When I take time to reflect on the results of my seven habits profile, I
notice that I don't tend to begin with the end in mind. I usually jump in headfirst and worry about
the end when I get close to the finish. I feel like I am able to accomplish the most when I am
working in total crisis mode, and fail to utilize any time to plan my week with a clear idea of what I
desire to accomplish. Failing to have a plan seems to cause me to overthink things, and I stress on
minor details that could have been avoided with even the simplest of plans. Even though I am able
to complete the tasks in which I need to accomplish, I am more thankful that I have finished and to
exhausted to feel accomplished. As a leader, I tent to neglect the feelings of others around me, and
instead focus on what it is I think is best for the organization in which I am leading. It is hard for me

Leadership – Charismatic Individuals or Contingent Characteristics?
A brief analysis of charismatic and situational leaders, leadership and styles.

"Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society

for the better" – Harry S. Truman

The final stage is the actual implementation of the vision, motivating the followers in the process. At
this stage they also stage demonstrations which projects their image, courage, dedication to the
cause, sacrifice etc. (C Jacobsen, R J. House 2001). Charismatic leaders are often value driven,
visionaries and have a trail of success stories which motivates the followers. The primary risk of this
style of leadership is that it may not be effective in all the contexts and such leaders can fade into
oblivion as soon as the context changes. Perhaps the most striking example of Charismatic
leadership is that of Sir Winston Churchill who proved to be a very effective war time leader and
prime minister but was voted out when elections were held after Page 1
the war because people did not consider him as somebody who could effectively handle post–war
reforms (Roy Jenkins, 2003). One of the strongly criticized and censured leaders of all times is
Adolf Hitler who because of his war crimes and atrocities, went down in history as a bad leader.
How did he rise from his humble beginnings to the all–powerful leader of a country which had the
potential to be the most powerful country in the world if had won in the Second World War? The art
of leadership... consists of consolidating the attention of the people against a single adversary and
taking care that nothing will split up that attention.

Why I Don 't An Event Essay
Age is inevitable. I realize this more and more every day, but yesterday was a real eye–opener. I
turned 41 yesterday. It wasn't an event; it was simply another day with another set of issues to wade
through. My friends all gave me a hard time and a light ribbing for getting older, and we all enjoyed
the day, but it was really just another day. What amazes me is that it seems like a week ago that I
was 21, and I could have sworn yesterday I was 31, but today I'm 41. I don't feel old; in fact, I don't
feel any different than when I was 21. Perhaps I'm a little slower or have a few more aches and
pains, but I don't feel like I'm getting older. The fact remains though, that I am, I am getting older.
At work, I'm one of the old guys. I get a lot of jokes about my age, of course they're all in good fun,
but I can tell that some of the people I work with really do think I'm old. The way I can tell is
because they look at me, and treat me, much the same way I looked and treated the "old guys" when
I was their age. They assume I can't keep up with the times, and that I probably need help with IT
issues and smart phones. The truth of the matter is that I can easily run circles around most of them,
literally; I can outrun the majority of my younger crew and do so on a pretty regular basis while
we're exercising together. Yet despite my agility, prowess for technology and aptitude to modern
music and culture, I'm still treated like an old guy. Why is this? I believe the

The Leadership Styles
Leadership Styles – Reflection
1. Charismatic Leaders I 'd just like to start off by saying that charisma isn 't always a positive thing.
Some charismatic leaders do some pretty awful things. Take Jim Jones, for example – a leader of a
troubled cult called the "People 's Temple". He used his charisma to brainwash them (really, there
isn 't a better word. He quite literally brainwashed them, playing his voice continually over a
loudspeaker that was broadcasted around the entire town.) He leads them to believe that the
government was out to get them, that the government would never accept a segregation like this
one. He made them believe that the government would come and kill them eventually, that they 'd
torture their children and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Trump 's running for President, he also fits the criteria by factoring the people 's ideas into his
running. In this case, he 's chosen to side with the –phobic side of the spectrum... But who am I to
judge? It seems to work for him.
1ii. Authoritian Leaders A prime example of authorization leadership is Kim Jong–Un. Ruling with
an iron fist, (and being known to execute those who don 't support him!) the whole of North Korea
fears and reveres him. Although this isn 't a positive example of authoritian leadership, it 's clearly
shown that he runs a dictatorship and nothing less. This is shown through his aggressive
punishments and surprising rewards – for example, for being drunk at his father 's funeral, an
assistant chief was sentenced to death. Due to these harsh punishments, the rewards seem
astronomical in comparison.
1iii. Visionary Leaders Taking a break from sociopathic leaders for now, let me introduce Albert
Einstein. In my personal opinion, he 's more of an intellectual leader than anything, but he does fit in
this category with a bit of wiggling. Einstien 's known for his fundamental work in the study of
space, matter, and time. Now, what makes him a visionary leader was his unwavering belief in the
scientific community, despite criticism from other scientists. He was also a key figure in the
development of nuclear weapons in the US, however he later decreed against

Charismatic Leadership Theory Of Leadership

  • 1. Charismatic Leadership Theory Of Leadership I. Charismatic Leadership Introduction to Charismatic Leadership Charisma has been associated with leaders and leader attributes since time immemorial. Webster's dictionary defines one meaning of charisma as a divinely inspired gift, grace, or talent, as for prophesying, healing, and etc. As the definition suggests, the attribute of charisma has long been associated with religious leaders. Charisma was not formally associated with secular leaders or a secular charismatic theory of leadership until Max Weber–a German sociologist–wrote of it in that context in 1947 (Bryman, Collinson, Grint, Jackson, & Uhl–Bien, 2011, p. 86). Since Weber's first suggestions of a charismatic theory of leadership, many others have built upon his work. Some felt that a charismatic theory of leadership should remain within the confines of a religious context. As more social, political, and organizational scholars adopted and built upon Weber's work, the religious–only context fell by the wayside. Before proceeding further, the tenets of charismatic leadership theory must be explained. Tenets of Charismatic Leadership Theory Researchers have proposed several characteristics of leaders described as 'charismatic'. The widely accepted characteristics of charismatic leaders are (Bryman et al., 2011, p. 90–91): (1) Critical of the status quo. (2) Sensitivity to subordinate needs and abilities. (3) Able to recognize deficiencies in the present context. (4) Characterized by their strategic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Leadership Styles For A Leadership Essay Introduction When I think about the type of leader I would like to be, there is one supervisor that always comes to mind because of the positive environment she cultivated. In researching the different leadership styles for this assignment, I believe that this is the style that she used with her staff. I was interested in learning more about transformational leadership and how I can cultivate this style in the way that I lead my current team as well as the way in which I lead future teams. Transformational leadership is a leadership style that promotes change as well as improves performance in the organization as a whole as well as on the individual employee level (Phaneuf, Boudrias, Rousseau, & Brunelle, 2016). James MacGregor Burns first introduced transformational leadership in his book titled Leadership that he authored in 1978. Burns defined transformational leadership as leadership that stems from one's core unchanging values and beliefs. Burns believed that transformational leaders not only bring together their followers, but also positively influence their follower's values and beliefs in a way that brings about positive change (Humphreys & Einstein, 2003). Transformational leaders are able to inspire employees to work towards a common goal by changing their expectations, motivation and perception of why they are doing the work. Transformational leaders cultivate a commitment from their employees, which encourages them to put aside self– interest to work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Leadership As A Charismatic Leader Numerous of leaders especially in the church are considered charismatic. Before the 1980's, charisma was not a major topic of discussion. The Charismatic approach is measured to reflect a particular kind of leader. They are usually strong self–confident individuals that portray competency. Their followers tend to mimic the goals and leadership style of the charismatic leader. They are gifted in articulating their ideas, "plans and goals to others while creating an ambiance that says, do as I do. They can articulate a compelling or captivating vision and can arouse strong emotions in followers. Despite the controversy about the originality of the charismatic leader, they are effective in the church, politics, and the business ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The paper clarifies this thought by sharing the beginning of many notable individuals' leadership style and how they matriculated to the office of the President of the United States and renowned Civil Rights Leaders. The Christian Worldview is shared that good leadership is defined one's relationship with God and how we treat one another. It provides information about biblical leadership such as David, Jesus, and Paul whose leadership approach is charismatic and remains effective today in many churches. It further talks about the charismatic approaches of men like Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, Barak Obama who swept the nation off their feet because of the resounding eloquent speeches that many young and old now recite and hold true to their hearts. Moreover, this paper speaks about some twenty–first century charismatic leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Barak Obama, and Bill Clinton. Details are provided to show that Charisma is a process, which links the traits of the charismatic leader to a VABES while influencing others to follow their way of thinking when using a burst of energy. Are Charismatic Leaders Born or Made? First and foremost, charisma in the Greek means "divinely inspired gifts," only God can give these kinds of gifts. Because high self–confidence and strong conviction in one's beliefs is a given factor for the charismatic leader, I argue that they are born, with leadership abilities that require development and ... Once again it is leader and followers exchange relationship. According to Howell, "without followers, there are plainly no leaders or leadership" (2006). Furthermore, followers are more important because if they do not follow, there is not leader (Howell, 2006). Howell mentioned that in order to understand the process of leadership it is important to explore the behavior of the followers (2006). He also added that in many followers perception a charismatic leader has a "heroic" personality and capable to persuade followers in a group or organization(Howell, 2006).The followers believe that their leader has power and ability or think him or her mighty (Howell, 2006). • 5. What Makes A Good Leader? What makes a manager of an organization one that can be properly characterized as an authentic leader? Furthermore, what makes the people who report to that manager motivated to not only accomplish the needed tasks and meet the required deadlines, but also to go above and beyond that to simply do the right thing, or, for the benefit of others in the organization? I will demonstrate through this post that I believe the one characteristic that makes a very good leader a great (and truly effective) one is when they display authentic leadership. I will discuss two specific methods that characterized my manager's display of authenticity in his leadership style as an accounting manager: ethics and trust, and other–centeredness (described by Robbins and Judge as, "socialized charismatic leadership") (2011). Authentic Leadership through Ethics and Trust What role do ethics and trust play when we determine the effectiveness of a leader? Robbins and Judge point out that there are some scholars that argue that the picture of effective leadership is only completed when there is consideration of the role of ethics and trust (Robbins and Judge, 2011). From witnessing the day–to–day activities of my accounting manager for the past four years, I would have to concur with these scholars. When the most important goals of a team, especially one in the realm of finance, are to seek and report what is true, what is accurate, and most important, what is right – over and above what ... • 7. Mahatma Gandhi : The British Rule Of India Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi was born during the British rule in India on October 2, 1869. Gandhi in the year of 1888 was sent to England to pursue law, where he developed interest in the philosophy of nonviolence as expressed in the holy Bhagawad Gita, a scared text of Hindu scriptures. However after passing the bar, he found little accomplishment in his attempt to practice law in India, which is when he accepted a position in South Africa, where he assisted on a lawsuit. (Mohandas Gandhi, 2015) In South Africa, he involved himself in an attempt to end discrimination against the minority Indians residing there. During this course, he developed "satyagarha", which translates into "soul force", or an approach of non–violence resistance, against the British governments in South Africa. In the years following the World War I, Gandhi became a leading figure in India for his struggle to achieve independent from the mighty British rule. His willingness to tolerate the punishments and the prison confinement earned him the title of " Mahatama", a "great soul" in India in 1914. (Mohandas Gandhi, 2015) Gandhi was also majorly known for his ascetic lifestyle and he regularly dressed himself in a loincloth and shawl. He was imprisoned several times during his pursuit of non–violence. For instance, in the year of 1914 when the British gunned down the peaceful Indian protesters, Gandhi and the citizens of India realized the need for self–rule, which is when Gandhi in the early 20s, organized ... • 8. Dr. Martin Luther King Even though Martin Luther King Junior and Mahatma Gandhi both struggled, I think that the charisma in them influenced social change, because of their tactics used, like non–violence. Martin Luther King Junior and Gandhi both functions as charismatic leaders and influenced others with their fascinatingly positive attitudes. It was hard for them to get there message 's and world view 's across but they remained strong and preserved through their struggles, no matter how tough things got. Gandhi transmitted his message without resorting to violence and Martian Luther King Junior learned from Gandhi and shows why non–violence is key. Charisma is the social energy that arches between a leader and a community (Kripal 212). This definition of charisma is better for Martin Luther King Junior. He showed so much charisma in his motivational speeches he gave to huge crowds, some even memorable to this day. Max Weber incorporated both psychological and sociological elements in his definition of charisma (Barnes 1). He defined charisma as a certain quality of an individual 's personality by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities (Barnes 1). Now I wouldn 't say that either of these leaders are supernatural or superhuman, but they do have exceptional qualities that they set the apart from the average individual. • 9. The Effect Of Executive Peak Performance Research shows successful leaders achieve peak performance, even in uncertain times, because they are charismatic, conditioned to accomplish, and they get people to take action; yet there is a dark side that can profoundly affect those closest to them. Peak performance is a superior level of functioning. Business leaders who achieve peak performance have integrated sustained accomplishment in their personalities. The individual becomes fully absorbed and focused, whether dealing with a task or another person and yet continues to maintain a strong sense of self. The interplay between action and behavior creates an unrestrained flow resulting in peak performance (Privette, 1999). The impact of executive peak performance produces a host of tangible results from creating greater organizational efficiency to improving profitability, even in times of adversity. We will learn these kinds of results have their roots in behavioral psychology. Additionally, research has proven that when charisma is added to the mix, achievement skyrockets. However, there is a dark–side to charisma that can and does produce negative impacts on others. We will examine these impacts, as well as what effective leaders can do to ensure they lead responsibly allowing those around them to maintain a heathy sense of self. As to what drives leaders, we must first look at what motivates people in general. For this, we turn to one of the most widely recognized experts on human motivation, ... Educational Leadership Styles Paper The capacity and implementation of various educational leadership styles has been critical to the organizational and instructional makeup of educational institutions since their inception. Various types of leadership have developed over the past 60 years and unique trends have emerged in the pursuit of creating and implementing changes in process and philosophy; specifically, improving teacher collaboration. Leadership styles frequently identified as charismatic, transactional, transformational, shared/distributed, and self/laissez–faire have emerged at the forefront of educational leadership theory. • 11. Transformational Leadership : Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of modern humanity. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of his leadership was his ability to adapt to whatever leadership style was necessary for any specific scenario. He could be a transformational leader if people needed to be mobilized, a servant leader when followers needed to be led by example, or a charismatic leader when he gave any one of his plethora of monumental speeches. Not only could MLK perform in each of these leadership roles, but he excelled at them. Dr. King was one of the greatest, most versatile leaders ever. We will discuss why in the following paragraphs. A transformational leader is one who strongly motivates their followers and uses the current conflicts to help them build their connection with, and support from, their followers. Using current events to relate to followers shows that the leader cares for the followers, shares their concerns, and is willing to help. Martin Luther King Jr. used the civil rights movement to connect with his followers, partially because the movement affected him, but largely because it affected millions of others like him. By establishing this connection with his followers, he was able to motivate them to act. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus."(Schladweiler) With this statement, Dr. King was publicly stating that leaders do not try and join movements, but rather, motivate ... • 12. Leaders Like Martin Luther King, Jr. Leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill and Hitler have one thing in common; the word charisma is usually attached to them when people describe their characteristics as a leader. Charisma defined by the online Merriam–Webster Dictionary is "a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (as a political leader); a special magnetic charm or appeal" (Merriam–Webster, 2014). The Oxford Dictionary states that charisma is "Compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others" (Oxford University Press, 2014). Max Weber (known as the father of sociology) first introduced the concept of charisma with the relationship to power and authority. He described charisma as a personality trait that sets her/him apart from the masses. The charismatic individual is deemed to have supernatural, superhuman, or to possess exceptional power that is not readily accessible to a regular person (Weber, 1947). Weber further believed that charisma was the result of a social crisis and that these leaders have extraordinary appeal because they "...emerge with the radical vision that provides the solution to the crisis" (Barbuto, 1997, p. 689). For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. arose in the civil rights movement as a beacon of change, equality and eventually for peace. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be $2.7 million. This essay is going to focus on what dark–side leadership is and how they can get into power when the consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be discussed and alternative explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must be adopted. The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48– 82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of 'dark–side' leadership lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of this essay will focus on personality explaining dark–side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is important to look at leadership emergence with regards to dark–side traits as proposed by Hogan and Hogan (1997). Dark–side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in excess and not traits in which they are lacking (Hogan & Hogan, 2001). They identified 11 subclinical traits that can be present in dark–side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan Development Survey. They are termed 'subclinical' because they are perceived to be less prominent than clinical traits – but still measure the degree to which a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not all leaders are famous people, or people in high positions of power. There are leaders all around us. They are just ones that possess leadership qualities that not all people have. This does not mean though that they are born leaders. This also doesn't mean that all leaders are good leaders. They can also harm society, like Hitler. People build their leadership qualities through life experiences. Great leaders are able to effectively influence their subordinates. This influencing is usually done by using their authority. A person with a vision and passion can achieve great things, both very valuable traits to have. If I can inject enthusiasm and energy into myself and others, many great things can be achieved. In the future when I am in a leadership position I want to be able to develop my followers by making sure that they possess the passion and energy needed to work towards our organization's common goal. I want to care about them and make sure that they succeed at what they want to accomplish. Working for a transformational leader should be a wonderful uplifting experience. Transformational leadership starts with the development of a vision. This should be a view of the future that will grab the attention, excite and convert potential followers. Once the vision has been developed, you will have to constantly sell the vision. This will probably take a lot of energy and commitment, because few people will automatically believe in your vision. A transformational leader should take every opportunity available to convince others to climb on their "bandwagon." In order to create followers, the transformational leader has to be careful in creating trust, and their personal integrity is a critical part in what they are selling. Therefore, they are selling themselves as well as the vision. "The common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The four groups of followers operated as alienated followers, sheep, yes people, and survivors, all lacking the key factor of being able to succeed without strong leadership. Sheep lack initiative and sense of responsibility, while yes people refuse to be against the leader (Wren 195). Alienated followers tend to think more independently but are prone to group think. They are normally dissatisfied and/or resentful. Any of these three groups can at any time merge into the survivor group because this group of followers operate under the "slogan "better safe than sorry"" (Wren 195). Since Jones preached about equality and accepting all men, his messages seemed consistent with ethical morals. • 17. Leadership Styles And Activism Of African American Women When asked to identify important leaders of the civil rights movement, the name that most often comes to one's mind is Martin Luther King Jr. Others may mention James Forman, Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, James Farmer, Andrew Young, or Bayard Rustin. Notably missing are the names of women leaders. Rarely would Ella Baker, Septima Clark, Gloria Richardson, Daisy Bates, or Fannie Lou Hamer be identified. The absence of the women leaders of the civil rights movement from history is not because there were not any, but because the type of leadership they performed is often overlooked in favor of the men leaders, due in part to gender bias. This paper will examine the leadership styles and activism of African–American women in the civil rights movement in comparison to the more widely–known and prominent male leaders. It challenges the notion that aside from a few well–known leaders, African–American women's roles in the movement consisted solely of behind–the–scenes and unimportant clerical work that is incomparable to male leadership. By examining what constitutes leadership, this paper concludes that while some African–American women activists may exhibit typical leadership styles parallel to male leaders, many others carried out leadership in atypical forms. The assorted types of leadership and activism African–American women contributed to the movement are determined to be on the same level of influence as the male leaders' contributions. Seeman (1960, p3) defines leadership as the acts of a person which influence other people towards a shared direction. Influence is a vital aspect of leadership as the person who leads should have the charisma and the ability to influence others, otherwise leadership is non–existent. However that does not mean that leaders are better people than their followers. Hollander (1992, p7) explains that leaders and followers should be understood in relation to each other. Bass and Steidlmeier (1999, p163) also suggest that leaders who adopt this method are more focused on their own interests rather than the interests of others. Barling et al. (2008), Christie et al. A divide within parties and between the public grew increasingly evident over the past year, ultimately leading to a candidate with no prior political experience beating out a candidate with forty–plus years on her resume. Scandals plagued both campaigns, however, polls and positive media coverage stayed firmly in Hillary Clinton's favor throughout the duration of the election process with Donald Trump even claiming that the polls were "rigged" and the media was biased. While the veracity of these claims cannot be verified, today we know that the polls were wrong and the media that all but handed the election to Clinton were wrong as well. So how did Trump, someone many said would need a miracle to make it to the White House, beat all the odds and his seemingly strong opponent to become President? Though pundits are still struggling to understand it, the rise of Donald Trump shouldn't have surprised anyone. For the pioneering German sociologist Max Weber, it would have been entirely predictable, a classic example of the politics of charisma. Weber posited that modern political systems are normally rational and bureaucratic. They are managed by trained professionals who deliver public services according to a set of clear rules. Analysis Of A Management Strategy : The Charisma Myth Essay Analysis of a Management Strategy: The Charisma Myth Berenice Escareno TDM 401/McWilliams September 19, 2016 Introduction Growing up, all of us had some sort of rule of thumb that either ruled in our households or school lives. We were told to do things a certain way because it has always been accomplished that way and never questioned if there was a better way in doing it. There are numerous ways in managing complex situations, so why do people believe management theory has only one correct way of executing it? Management theory has a very long timeline in history in which there have been many different management concepts, such as the scientific management theory created by F.W Taylor, which was more about production in contrast to Peter Drucker whose management theory consists of customer service. For this reason, it is extremely important to study and analyze the different management theories in order to see which practices are best suited for a specific workplace, person, and/or work communities. The book chosen for this report is The Charisma Myth, published by Penguin Group in New York 2012. The author Olivia Fox Cabane, has had much experience lecturing about management theory in prestigious colleges such as Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and MIT. This leader can influence external stakeholders by becoming the symbol of the company or cause he represents. They possess the ability to influence others through their own desirable "traits and characteristics" (Dubrin, 2010, p. 69). They also influence others because of the skills, abilities, and knowledge they possess. Another characteristic is their ability to get their workers excited about their work and "experience job involvement" (Dubrin, 2010, p. 70). • 37. Who Is Xerxes As A Prophet The goddess of nature named Aura, who created light and darkness as a balance. As darkness eroded over light, evil, pain and suffering inhabited the world along with humans and creatures such as giant spiders and lizards in which it represents fear. The goddess realized that this isn't what was planned. The war between the goddess and the creatures who upset the equilibrium between light and darkness. As the goddess began to balance light and darkness, she traps the excess darkness into a sacred diamond surrounded by her divine powers. As that happened, the ginormous creatures shrunk to resemble the declension of darkness. The goddess next plan were to put the diamond in an area where the sequence of the sacred hierophany in a human form who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The major part of keeping the group intact is food, home, clothes, and pond to shower in. All of this was during the Tadeas era and things changed to adapt to the contemporary times. In contemporary times, the institution is set in Greece but replicated in a different location with the replicated diamond. In fact, in 1955, there was a leader named Lucius Caelum who was considered as a prophet because he claimed that the goddess bequeaths him the ability to detect excess darkness or light in people. As he convinced people into believing his claim, more people began to join Diamantism and conform to Lucius. Charisma is extremely especially for Lucius because without charisma, how is he able to recruit more members into the religion to maintain its integrity. From there, Lucius began managing and constructing the institution with his view on Diamantism. He provides homes and food for people to stay in the group so they won't be in contact with people in the outside world. One thing that was different compared to the institution during Tadeas's era is that despite there not being any electricity available, the community is livable and is mostly an area to worship the diamond and learn about the religion of Diamantism. In socialization, there was a school specifically for the members of Diamantism to teach them the creation myth, how to please goddess Aura by worshipping the sacred diamond by using the religious education ... • 38. Seven Habits Profile : An Evaluation Of My Personal... Seven Habits Profile: An Evaluation of my Personal Leadership Style I have always thought of myself as a strong, motivated leader, and based on the results of my seven habits profile I can confirm that there will always be room to grow. There are areas of the seven habits profile in which I thought I excelled, but in reality those are the areas that I need to develop the most. I have always seemed to complete whatever task I may have had in mind, and was always successful in the path that I had taken to get there. When I take time to reflect on the results of my seven habits profile, I notice that I don't tend to begin with the end in mind. I usually jump in headfirst and worry about the end when I get close to the finish. I feel like I am able to accomplish the most when I am working in total crisis mode, and fail to utilize any time to plan my week with a clear idea of what I desire to accomplish. Failing to have a plan seems to cause me to overthink things, and I stress on minor details that could have been avoided with even the simplest of plans. Even though I am able to complete the tasks in which I need to accomplish, I am more thankful that I have finished and to exhausted to feel accomplished. As a leader, I tent to neglect the feelings of others around me, and instead focus on what it is I think is best for the organization in which I am leading. It is hard for me to sympathize as a leader with those who allow their emotions to cloud their judgment. Everyone has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Leadership Leadership – Charismatic Individuals or Contingent Characteristics? A brief analysis of charismatic and situational leaders, leadership and styles. Linesh Palayadan, Cass Business School, City university London, UK. "Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skilful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better" – Harry S. Truman It goes without saying that human beings couldn't have achieved what they have achieved if they had not worked in groups. Teamwork is probably one of the most important "inventions" of mankind which does not get explicitly mentioned when one refers about the tools and evolution of human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final stage is the actual implementation of the vision, motivating the followers in the process. At this stage they also stage demonstrations which projects their image, courage, dedication to the cause, sacrifice etc. (C Jacobsen, R J. House 2001). Charismatic leaders are often value driven, visionaries and have a trail of success stories which motivates the followers. The primary risk of this style of leadership is that it may not be effective in all the contexts and such leaders can fade into oblivion as soon as the context changes. Perhaps the most striking example of Charismatic leadership is that of Sir Winston Churchill who proved to be a very effective war time leader and prime minister but was voted out when elections were held after Page 1 the war because people did not consider him as somebody who could effectively handle post–war reforms (Roy Jenkins, 2003). One of the strongly criticized and censured leaders of all times is Adolf Hitler who because of his war crimes and atrocities, went down in history as a bad leader. How did he rise from his humble beginnings to the all–powerful leader of a country which had the potential to be the most powerful country in the world if had won in the Second World War? The art of leadership... consists of consolidating the attention of the people against a single adversary and taking care that nothing will split up that attention. ... • 40. Why I Don 't An Event Essay Age is inevitable. I realize this more and more every day, but yesterday was a real eye–opener. I turned 41 yesterday. It wasn't an event; it was simply another day with another set of issues to wade through. My friends all gave me a hard time and a light ribbing for getting older, and we all enjoyed the day, but it was really just another day. What amazes me is that it seems like a week ago that I was 21, and I could have sworn yesterday I was 31, but today I'm 41. I don't feel old; in fact, I don't feel any different than when I was 21. Perhaps I'm a little slower or have a few more aches and pains, but I don't feel like I'm getting older. The fact remains though, that I am, I am getting older. At work, I'm one of the old guys. I get a lot of jokes about my age, of course they're all in good fun, but I can tell that some of the people I work with really do think I'm old. The way I can tell is because they look at me, and treat me, much the same way I looked and treated the "old guys" when I was their age. They assume I can't keep up with the times, and that I probably need help with IT issues and smart phones. The truth of the matter is that I can easily run circles around most of them, literally; I can outrun the majority of my younger crew and do so on a pretty regular basis while we're exercising together. Yet despite my agility, prowess for technology and aptitude to modern music and culture, I'm still treated like an old guy. Why is this? I believe the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Leadership Styles Leadership Styles – Reflection 1. Charismatic Leaders I 'd just like to start off by saying that charisma isn 't always a positive thing. Some charismatic leaders do some pretty awful things. Take Jim Jones, for example – a leader of a troubled cult called the "People 's Temple". He used his charisma to brainwash them (really, there isn 't a better word. He quite literally brainwashed them, playing his voice continually over a loudspeaker that was broadcasted around the entire town.) He leads them to believe that the government was out to get them, that the government would never accept a segregation like this one. He made them believe that the government would come and kill them eventually, that they 'd torture their children and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since Trump 's running for President, he also fits the criteria by factoring the people 's ideas into his running. In this case, he 's chosen to side with the –phobic side of the spectrum... But who am I to judge? It seems to work for him. 1ii. Authoritian Leaders A prime example of authorization leadership is Kim Jong–Un. Ruling with an iron fist, (and being known to execute those who don 't support him!) the whole of North Korea fears and reveres him. Although this isn 't a positive example of authoritian leadership, it 's clearly shown that he runs a dictatorship and nothing less. This is shown through his aggressive punishments and surprising rewards – for example, for being drunk at his father 's funeral, an assistant chief was sentenced to death. Due to these harsh punishments, the rewards seem astronomical in comparison. 1iii. Visionary Leaders Taking a break from sociopathic leaders for now, let me introduce Albert Einstein. In my personal opinion, he 's more of an intellectual leader than anything, but he does fit in this category with a bit of wiggling. Einstien 's known for his fundamental work in the study of space, matter, and time. Now, what makes him a visionary leader was his unwavering belief in the scientific community, despite criticism from other scientists. He was also a key figure in the development of nuclear weapons in the US, however he later decreed against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
