Guide to Preliminary Data Analysis
for NEBP Atmospheric Science Teams
Question: What is this guide?
Methods: Collect information from
past experiments, studies and
experiences.
Findings: A simple, easy-to-use
guide on quick, simple and
interesting ideas on data analysis
during and after the Eclipse
experiments.
Discussions and further study:
Check out the list of references.

Project #1: Observing the Eclipse
Question: What do you observe
during the total eclipse?
Methods: Learn the fundamentals
about the solar eclipse in advance
and carefully observe it and its
impacts during the eclipse.
Findings: Beautiful scene, excited
people, confusing animals ...
Discussions and further study: How
and why do animals react to the
eclipse found by others and other
studies? Gerasopoulos et al (2008)
Q&A: jwang20@albany.edu
Project #2: Measuring solar radiation changes
Question: How did the solar radiation
change during the total eclipse?
Methods: Visualize the time series of
solar radiation data from pyranometer
and label the totality stages.
Findings: Srad dropped to 0 W/m2, and
changes depend on a lot of factors.
Discussions and further study: Did you
have similar findings? How to explain
the Srad changes? Analyze the data
from other sites for comparisons. Fowler
et al. (2019)
Q&A: jwang20@albany.edu
Project #3: Measuring temperature changes
Question: How did the surface
temperature change during the total
eclipse?
Methods: Visualize the time series of
surface temperature data and label
the totality stages.
Results: Temperature dropped but
lagged behind Srad.
Discussions and further study: Did
you have similar findings? What
determines T drops and why it lags?
Analyze the data from other sites for
comparisons. Fowler et al. (2019) Q&A: jwang20@albany.edu
Project #4: Measuring wind changes
Question: What is the response of the
surface and BL wind field within the
path of totality?
Methods: Visualize the time series of
surface and radiosonde wind data.
Results: Winds slow down and have
less variability.
Discussions and further study: What
else did you notice and how to explain
wind changes? Analyze the data from
other sites for comparisons. Fowler et al.
(2019)
Q&A: jwang20@albany.edu
Project #5: Measuring boundary layer
responses
Question: How does the boundary layer
respond to the eclipse?
Methods: Plot T and other profiles in
the BL.
Results: T cools in the surface layer
with smaller magnitudes than surface T.
Discussions and further study: What
did you find? How about other
variables? Analyze the data from other
sites for comparisons. Fowler et al. (2019)
Q&A: jwang20@albany.edu
Project #6: Unexpected results
Question: What if you don’t see any
significant responses of the surface
and atmosphere to the total eclipse?
Methods: Brainstorm other
applications of collected data.
Results: Atmospheric River Met Total
Solar Eclipse in 2020 in South
America.
Discussions and further study: Study
atmospheric river using the unique
radiosonde data and validate
reanalysis and models.
