Juana de Arco was a French heroine born in 1412 who heard divine voices commanding her to help defend France against English invaders. She convinced the future King Charles VII to allow her to lead the French army, and in 1429 she lifted the English siege of Orleans and inspired the French to start retaking territory. However, she was later captured, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake at age 19 in 1431. Though controversial in her time, she became a symbol of French national identity and was canonized as a saint in 1920.

3. WHO IS JUANA DE ARCO?
Juana de Arco, also known as the Maiden of Orleans, was
born in Domrémy, a village of France, in the January of
1412. She grew up in a French peasant family.
At thirteen, he confessed having seen St. Miguel, St.
Catalina and St. Margarita, and declared that their voices
ordered her to lead a devout and pious life. A few years
later, he felt called by God to a mission: lead the French
army, crown the dolphin in Reims as king and expel the
English from the country.
4. Around 1428, Juana de Arco set out
for Vaucouleurs, where Carlos VII's
troops were. The young warrior asked
to join her ranks, but they rejected
her.
A few months later, the siege of
Orleans by Enrique VI aggravated the
delicate French situation, and Juana
saw Carlos VII again, insistently again
asking him to enlist in his troops.
In 1429, Juana de Arco, under
divine orders, led the army of
more than 5000 men, with which
Juana de Arco managed to defeat
the English and lift the siege of
Orleans (May 8, 1429).
In The Hundred Years War (1337-1453),Carlos VII, the heir to the throne of French, and Enrique VI of England, fought for the
throne of France.
Finally, Carlos VII accepted at the
end, when examined by certain
theologians, leaving over 5000 men
in charge and carrying to Orleans.
5. JUANA´S ROLE IN THE HISTORY OF FRENCH
Juana´s role allowed Carlos VII to be crowned
symbolically as king of France in Reims.
Thanks to the victory commanded by Juana de
Arco, France gradually was recovering territories.
Finally, he reconquered France.
After these mission, Juana de Arco stopped
hearing their inner voices and asked permission to
return home, but at the insistence of those who
asked her to stay, she continued fighting , first in
the attack against Paris in September 1429, and
then in the siege of Compiègne, where she was
captured by the Burgundians on May 24, 1430.
6. Juana de Arco was transferred to Rouen and tried by an ecclesiastical court.
During this process, the court accused her of witchcraft and detected that
the voices they referred to were from the devil.
Many are those who believe that this trial was aimed at discrediting Carlos
VII for following a witch.
The process against Juana de Arco lasted about three months and Juana had
no chance of defense.
At a time of his statement during the process, she retracted his statements.
This caused the death penalty to be commuted to life imprisonment.
Some time later she returned to reaffirm that the voices she heard had
divine origin, so they condemned her to death
On May 30, 1431, with 19 years, she died burned at the stake.
Finally she was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920, becoming the patroness of
France and a symbol of national unity.
