Knossos was one of the major cities of Crete and considered Europe's oldest city. It was home to a large palace dating back to around 2600 BC, during the Minoan civilization. The palace complex covered 20,000 square meters and featured multiple courtyards, painted walls and murals. The Minoans engaged in overseas trade of goods like ceramics, copper, and tin. Evidence from artwork suggests the Minoans were a peaceful society.
