2. What makes up our solar system?
Our solar system includes everything affected by the sun’s gravity.
• Sun
• Eight planets
• Moons
• Asteroids
• comets
3. The eight planets in order from the Sun
• Mercury
• Venus
• Earth
• Mars
• Jupiter
• Saturn
• Uranus
• Neptune

4. Inner and Outer planets
The four planets closest to the sun are the INNER planets.
• Terrestrial planets—made of rocks and have iron cores just like Earth.
****There is an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter*****
The four OUTER planets are the ones farthest from the sun.
• Called gas giants because although they have rocky or metallic cores, they are mostly made of gassy sludge.
• They don’t have defined outlines.
• Much larger than inner/terrestrial planets.
5. Mercury
• Closest to sun
• Has extreme temperatures because it has no atmosphere
• Looks like Earth’s moon
• Has no moons
6. Venus
• Close in size and mass to Earth
• Has a dense atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide that collects heat
• Temperature remains around 464 degrees Celcius
7. Earth
• Only planet known to support to life-helped by its unique properties
such as liquid water, atmosphere, and ozone layer
• Has one large moon
8. Mars
• Looks red because it contains iron oxide (rust)
• Has ice caps, valleys, and the largest volcano in the solar system
• Has a thin atmosphere that is mostly carbon dioxide
• Has huge dust storms and seasons
• Has two small moons
9. Jupiter
• Largest planet in solar system
• Has at least 66 moons
• Has red, white, brown stripes which are gas storms
• Has The Great Red Spot--- huge storm.
10. Saturn
• Second largest planet, with lowest density
• Mostly hydrogen and helium
• Has complex system of rings made of ice, rocks and dust
• Has at least 60 moons
11. Uranus
• Bluish green in color caused by methane
• Has at least 27 moons
• Probably mostly ice and rock
• Looks like it is flipped on its side
12. Neptune
• Farthest planet from sun
• Bluish-green in color
• Atmosphere can rapidly change (lots of storms)
• Has 13 moons and several rings
