- Nothing’s more frustrating than a dead battery. In this 10 minute presentation I’d like to give you the basics of how to jump-start a car. Let’s begin by understanding something about the battery itself.
- The battery is responsible for supplying electricity to the starting motor which cranks the engine. The battery also supplies the electricity to the distributor which forwards the electricity to the right spark plug at the right time. The spark then ignites the fuel. Two things that you can check to determine if you battery is good are the green ball indicator and the voltage range. Sometimes a battery has a little green ball that floats in a window on the top of the battery The little green ball indicator is based on the specific gravity of the fluid in the battery relative to the ball. Changes in the electrical property of the battery acid cause the ball to rise or fall. Measuring the voltage requires a volt meter. Just for your general information, a voltmeter is a device that allows you to tap into the positive and negative terminals of the battery and read the charge.
- I’m sure all of you have seen a car battery at some point in your life. For our purposes, we are most concerned with identifying the positive and negative terminals on top of the battery. These will feature prominently in jump-starting the car. <picture of battery with positive and negative terminals identified> As general maintenance, with the car off, make sure the battery cables are fastened tightly to the battery. Use a rag to clean the terminals and connectors (maybe spray cleaner too). Clean the terminals one at a time but be sure not to touch both since this will create a large spark. When jump-starting a car, you must remember that batteries can be dangerous. First, they can deliver a severe shock if jumper cables are not connected correctly. Secondly, if a spark occurs near the battery, it can explode, spewing acid
- Measuring the battery voltage is a little bit off the beaten path. But if you are near a garage or have some way of measuring the voltage you can tell whether it might be a good idea to try to jump-start the car. If the voltage of the battery is below 9.5 volts, then jump-starting the car might cause problems with the electronics of both cars. In this case, you need to remove the dead battery and use some external charger to bring it back up to 12 ½ volts. Just something to keep in mind.
- Now let’s get back to jump-starting the car. The posts may have to be cleaned (wipe it with a rag) to make it readable and to get a good connection, but DON’T touch both posts at the same time. If you connect to the wrong signs, then you will get a big spark and probably cause problems to both cars Remember, ‘positive to positive’ is the way to go.
- Watch out for the fan so that it does not hit the cable when you attach to the negative terminal Never make a final connection directly to the dead battery only to metal on the car.
- Why does the alternator need to run? What is the purpose of the alternator? At no time should any of the clamps touch each other. If they touch then you are in the circuit.
- Lights are the culprits most of the time There are several diodes in the alternator of your car and if one of them goes bad then not all of the electricity generator by the alternator goes into the car and causes a large drain on the battery The same thing with bad grounds or wires or Bad grounds can also cause the sensors in your car to report incorrect values Sometimes when you rev the engine the lights will be brighter (one indicator of bad electrical problems)
