Here’s what we thought...
● Language learning is really tough online in COVID-19.
● The language you learn in class isn’t applicable to daily life.
● People aren’t having fun learning language in class.
● Anybody learning a language would benefit from increased
exposure to native speakers speaking target language

The Language Learning Curve
Maximize Fluency Minimize Time
● Consistent practice
● Not bored -- fun and engaging
● Integrate into daily life and
regular habits
● Exposure to culture and
daily life
● Pace and tone of real life
conversations
“I always wished I practiced consistently for a
little bit each day instead of trying to cram
three hours per day for a week when the
motivation strikes me.”
“I watched a lot of TV, read books, and focused on
immersing myself from the very beginning. You’re
hearing Japanese from a Japanese speaker rather
than watering it down to your level.”
“Language is a social act -- language is
not learned speaking to a wall in a dorm,
it’s learned by talking to people.”
“In high-school, I might not have been the
best student, but plopping me down and
having me stare at characters doesn’t work;
it has to be about the actual communication
about person-to-person.”
“When I was in Mexico, they called me a ‘fresa’
because I spoke ‘rich white boy Spanish’...”
STOP!
don’t boil
the ocean….
Day 2 Insights - avoiding “boiling the ocean”
● Narrowing in of customer segments - who will be our earlyvangelists?
○ YES to Intermediate proficiency language learners
■ Have already built up a solid enough understanding of the language such that
they could consume content and mostly understand it, while still needing
some help
■ Are excited and passionate about furthering their language skills; actively
seeking out ways to improve
○ NO to travelers/expats
■ Either at completely at the beginner stage and would seek out a easier way to
learn the essentials, or are already comfortable with the language
○ NO to college students looking to study abroad
■ Those who are intermediate proficiency may be a good fit, but there are
simpler ways to learn “survival phrases” - this was too broad a group

Time
sharpen the curve
Time to Pivot: “Lens” Rather than Platform
After ~30+ interviews, we realized:
Creating our own TikTok-like platform presented these challenges
● TikTok is so well-loved because of its genuine, down-to-earth, and random nature
○ It would be difficult to replicate this wealth of spontaneous and organic content
○ “I wouldn’t want it to feel fake, like Dora.” - an interviewee on content
● Would have to incentivize content creators to create on our platform, as opposed to (or as well
as) on TikTok - they would be another customer segment initially
● However, if we drew content from TikTok to put on our own platform, this would put us at
TikTok’s mercy -> us decreasing their users and them noticing -> TikTok getting angry and suing ->
startup fire/death of Parrot
Thus, we decided to pivot
● Rather than creating a totally new social media platform, we decided to create a “lens” that you
could toggle on and off directly on your regular TikTok account
● This would allow us to take advantage of all the rich content already on TikTok. and would align us
so that we were not longer a direct competitor with TikTok

New Customer Pipeline
● Referral program
● Ambassador program
Converting passive to active
● Language learners motivated by access to new
community and culture
● More time on Tik Tok = more exposure to culture
● Rewarded by understanding native content (subtitles)
● COVID = can’t go to countries
Here’s where we ended...
● Language learning is really hard all the time (not just in COVID), but
there’s a lot that can be done to help.
● The language you learn in class is a necessary foundation, but actually
using the language in real life requires practice and exposure.
● Everybody will benefit from exposure to native speakers, but
intermediate language learners will benefit the most.
○ It can be very challenging to find material for your proficiency,
but once you’ve found it, you tend to really like it.
● The fun part of language learning comes from community, talking to
people, and learning new perspectives!

NEXT STEPS
1. Show potential users the new MVP
2. Explore technological feasibility/hacks
3. Examine price points for language buddy service
a. Conversion from free to paid service
4. Evaluate optimal time for referral program
5. Investigate what type of interaction customers want with language
buddies/tutors
a. Checking sentences and examples
b. Building a social language-learning community
6. Evaluate restrictions to put around language tutor program -> what is an ideal
amount of time to offer access?
7. Reach out to potential translators, language tutors, teachers, etc.
8. Experiment with ‘gamification’ and streaks to keep users coming back

  • 3. Here’s what we thought... ● Language learning is really tough online in COVID-19. ● The language you learn in class isn’t applicable to daily life. ● People aren’t having fun learning language in class. ● Anybody learning a language would benefit from increased exposure to native speakers speaking target language

  • 12. Time to Pivot: “Lens” Rather than Platform After ~30+ interviews, we realized: Creating our own TikTok-like platform presented these challenges ● TikTok is so well-loved because of its genuine, down-to-earth, and random nature ○ It would be difficult to replicate this wealth of spontaneous and organic content ○ “I wouldn’t want it to feel fake, like Dora.” - an interviewee on content ● Would have to incentivize content creators to create on our platform, as opposed to (or as well as) on TikTok - they would be another customer segment initially ● However, if we drew content from TikTok to put on our own platform, this would put us at TikTok’s mercy -> us decreasing their users and them noticing -> TikTok getting angry and suing -> startup fire/death of Parrot Thus, we decided to pivot ● Rather than creating a totally new social media platform, we decided to create a “lens” that you could toggle on and off directly on your regular TikTok account ● This would allow us to take advantage of all the rich content already on TikTok. and would align us so that we were not longer a direct competitor with TikTok

Editor's Notes

  1. Jess: Hey everyone, we’re team parrot. Language learning is a grind. It gets boring, and it’s so hard to maintain motivation. We want to fuse education and entertainment together to make foreign language learning effective AND fun -- Think Tik Tok meets Duolingo. After 56 interviews and gudied by our wonderful mentor Wendy Tsu, we’ve made some really incredible insights into language learning.
  2. My name is Jessica Yan, and Janelle, Sehaj, Louise, and I are a team of rising sophomores with varying degrees of language learning experience. We came in with some thoughts based on our personal experiences.
  3. Sehaj; language learning is hard! not many online immersive options available, ESP during covid; people aren’t learning how to speak langugae, but they are studying rigorous grammar structures that aren’t used in daily life - not applying academic concepts
  4. Sehaj; we started off a broad customer segment & value prop - possible users = mid/hs + explain the whole idea - build our OWN platform w original content creators in diff languages + crowd-sourced rating system
  5. Sehaj No COVID because lots of people learn languages on their own or online anyway; narrowed down need - ppl need exposure to real spoken language & consistent learning
  6. Sehaj Basically, we got a really clear image into how the language learning experience works.
  7. Sehaj: through customer interviews, our beliefs were validated that people dont want to just memorize a long list; want to tap into ppl’s BIOlogy (dopamine) - language learning as a by-product of entertainment
  8. Louise

  10. Louise
  11. White space is target market
  12. Janelle: After conducting 30 some interviews, we realized that creating our own entertainment platform would be too difficult. Tik Tok is known for being organic and genuinely funny, and it would be hard to replicate that with our platform. We would also have to figure out how to encourage creators to switch to our platform. It’d be much better to use already existing content -- thus, we pivoted to target people who already use Tik Tok, and decided that we wanted to make a layer over Tik Tok
  13. Janelle
  14. Jessica: Here’s a look at what our lens would look like. Subtitles in the target language would be overlaid on top of the video, with an option to slow down the video and a difficulty rating. If you don’t know a word, you can pop up a definition in either your target language or your native language, then add the word to a flashcard set
  15. Janelle: To make it easier to envision our potential users, we created Annie, our customer persona. She’s a high school student who uses Tik Tok regularly and is intrinsically motivated to learn languages even outside of the classroom
  16. Jessica -- on our insights from day 4, we realized that students really valued feedback from native speakers. Thus, we included this value in our partners and revenue streams.
  17. Jessica: in the app, this manifests as language tutor feedback on sentences spoken or written by the learner, and the option to be paired with a language buddy
  18. Jessica We integrated the tenets of fluency, time, and motivation into a new three-tiered business model -- free access to lens. As the learners watch more Tik Toks, they learn more about community and culture, motivating them to become active learners who will be willing to pay for language buddies and certified tutors, which we provide. lens on Tik Tok for subtitles & flashcards is free; access to language buddies and certified tutors is paid, getting increasingly more expensive. The hypothesis is that as passive learners spend more time on Tik Tok, learning about the country and the culture, they will feel more motivated to learn the language, converting them into active learners. Thus, they will be willing to pay for language buddies/tutors
  19. Janelle -- we just added more on to the google form -- asked users how much they’d be willing to pay
  20. Jessica: in the end, some key things we figured out are that intermediate language learners have a lot to benefit from watching target language content, and that learners are intrinsivally motivated by community and people!
  21. Jessica: Thus, we now have our final business model canvas, incorporating everything we’ve learned over the last five days.
  22. Jessica: We plan to steepen the curve by correcting the students’ learning with feedback and real life dialogue, while motivating the students with fun and access to culture and community.
