PRESENTATION ON 
Institute of Education and 
Research (IER) 
University of Dhaka
INSTITUTION OF EDUCATION AND 
RESEARCH (IER) 
The Institute of Education and Research, University of 
Dhaka is an apex institute in the field of professional 
education in Bangladesh. It is the only Institute of its 
kind under the public universities of Bangladesh which 
offers teaching programmes leading to higher 
professional degrees, conducts advanced research 
studies and provides extension services in education.
HISTORY OF IER 
 The Institute of Education and Research (IER), University of Dhaka, was 
established through the joint efforts of the University of Dhaka, the then 
Government of Pakistan and the USAID (US Agency for International 
Development) Mission. 
 The USAID Mission entered into a contract with the Colorado State 
College to establish, organize and direct the initial stages of IER. 
 Then the contract came into effect on November 1, 1959 (1960). 
 Finally on July 1, 1960 the classes of the Institute began with 33 students 
of one year M.Ed. degree program.
ACADEMICS PROGRAMS OF IER 
The programs offered by the Institute are as follows: 
a. Four years Bachelor of Education (Hon’s.) Program 
b. One-year Master of Education program (day) 
c. Two year part time (evening) Master of Education 
program 
d. M. Phil Program in Education 
e. Thesis-based Ph. D. Program in Education
OBJECTIVES OF IER 
 To promote and to provide facilities for advanced 
study and research in education. 
 To provide teaching, and guidance in order to prepare 
candidates for the degrees of Master of Education 
and Doctor of Philosophy in Education of the 
University 
 To provide courses of further study for those already 
qualified to engage in educational work. 
 To provide services for those concerned with higher 
education in the University Teaching Departments and 
affiliated or constituent colleges.

  • 2. PRESENTATION ON Institute of Education and Research (IER) University of Dhaka
  • 3. INSTITUTION OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (IER) The Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka is an apex institute in the field of professional education in Bangladesh. It is the only Institute of its kind under the public universities of Bangladesh which offers teaching programmes leading to higher professional degrees, conducts advanced research studies and provides extension services in education.
  • 4. HISTORY OF IER  The Institute of Education and Research (IER), University of Dhaka, was established through the joint efforts of the University of Dhaka, the then Government of Pakistan and the USAID (US Agency for International Development) Mission.  The USAID Mission entered into a contract with the Colorado State College to establish, organize and direct the initial stages of IER.  Then the contract came into effect on November 1, 1959 (1960).  Finally on July 1, 1960 the classes of the Institute began with 33 students of one year M.Ed. degree program.
  • 5. ACADEMICS PROGRAMS OF IER The programs offered by the Institute are as follows: a. Four years Bachelor of Education (Hon’s.) Program b. One-year Master of Education program (day) c. Two year part time (evening) Master of Education program d. M. Phil Program in Education e. Thesis-based Ph. D. Program in Education

OBJECTIVES OF IER  To promote and to provide facilities for advanced study and research in education.  To provide teaching, and guidance in order to prepare candidates for the degrees of Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education of the University  To provide courses of further study for those already qualified to engage in educational work.  To provide services for those concerned with higher education in the University Teaching Departments and affiliated or constituent colleges.

  • 9. PROFILE OF A RESEARCHER Name: Mohammed Tarik Ahsan Designation: Associate Professor, IER, DU. Qualification: B.Ed.(IER, Dhaka University), M.Ed.(IER, Dhaka University) Master of Spec. Ed. (Flinders University of Australia), Currently Ph.D. Researcher (Monash University Melbourne, Australia) Research topic: Pre-service Teachers’ preparedness for inclusive Education in Bangladesh. Areas of Interests: Inclusive education-policy initiatives, school and curriculum reform for inclusive education, teacher beliefs, attitudes and efficacy towards inclusive education Special Education- curriculum simplification/modification, IEP/NEP, child development, educational psychology.

Hearing impairment-education, speech and language development audiology for education, speech therapy/training Alternative Communication-sign language, sign supported language, tactile language, total communication Teacher preparation-multiple ways of teaching learning, social constructivism, teacher beliefs, attitudes, efficacy Research Experiences: Team Member of a national research team known as Education Watch of CAMPE, 2006. Researcher, Study on Participatory National Budget Analysis: Education of Children with Disabilities, ActionAid Bangladesh, since October 2001 to March 2002. Researcher as a member of the research team of the study on Situation of Adolescent Girls and Women with Disabilities, conducted by CSID in association with Grameen Trust Bangladesh; 2000 to 2002.
