Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that can cause infertility if left untreated. It is caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium, which infects warm, moist areas of the body like the urethra, eyes, throat, vagina, and anus. Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sex. While symptoms vary between men and women, they can include abnormal discharge and pain when urinating. Untreated gonorrhea in women can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancies. In men, it can cause epididymitis and infertility.
