• N. gonorrhoeae can also infect the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum.
• Gonorrhea can be passed through sextual contact, oral or vaginal intercourse

• The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated the global incidence of several sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) among individuals aged 15 to 49 years
• N. gonorrhoeae is fairly easily transmitted: the estimated probability of penile-to-vaginal transmission is
approximately 50% per sex act
• Among the intercourse there are 85% which are protection less

• Gonorrhea is an infection caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects both males and females.
• Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
• The gonorrhea bacteria are most often passed from one person to another during sexual contact, including
oral, anal or vaginal intercourse.
• It happens for unprotected intercorse
Sign and symptoms
Symptoms in women
In women, symptoms of gonorrhoea can include:
an unusual vaginal discharge which may be thin or watery and green or yellow in colour
pain or a burning sensation when passing urine
pain or tenderness in the lower abdominal area – this is less common
bleeding between periods, heavier periods and bleeding after sex – this is less common
Symptoms in men
In men, symptoms of gonorrhoea can include:
an unusual discharge from the tip of the penis, which may be white, yellow or green
pain or a burning sensation when urinating
inflammation (swelling) of the foreskin
pain or tenderness in the testicles – this is rare
