3. Consolidation - Definition
• Consolidation refers to the compression or settlement that soils
undergo as a response of placing loads onto the ground.
• These loads produce corresponding increases in the vertical
effective stress, sv’
• Consolidation is a time-dependent process, in some soils it may take
long time (100 years ?) to achieve complete settlement.
5. Liquid Limit
The liquid limit is that water content of soil at which
it has infinitesimal shear resistance against flow which was measured
in Casgrande apparatus.
The value of liquid limit in our sample = 29.63 %
8. Plastic Limit
The plastic limit of soil is the water content of soil at
which soil enters in semisolid state from plastic state .
The plastic limit of our sample =18.5%
14. Consolidation
• Weight of ring = 106gm
• Weight of ring +weight of soil = 280gm
• Weight of soil = 174gm
• Dial reading before saturation = 6.40
• Height of ring = 2cm
• Volume of ring = 88.31cm3
• Diameter of ring = 7.5cm
• Dial reading after saturation = 6
• Dry weight of soil =226-106 = 120gm
19. Consolidation
