American Public 's Knowledge And Involvement
This essay briefly describes the current state of the Americans public's knowledge and involvement in
news, geography, and politics, citing both anecdotal and formal academic examples. First, this essay
describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in news. Then, this essay describes the
American public's knowledge and involvement in geography. Finally, it describes the American public's
knowledge and involvement in politics. American Public's Understanding and Involvement in News The
American public has very little understanding and involvement in the news. It is assumed that the people
are stupid, ignorant, disregarded, and that they seek unreliable sources of information about important
news events (Shenkman 14). The two causes that suggest this is that the public is either uninterested or is
not well–informed. Anecdotal example The American public has almost no understanding and
involvement in the news. The younger generation, specifically, finds absolutely no interest in the news
and believes that it is irrelevant. For example, "when one college teacher required a class to listen to
NPR for an hour, one student summed up the general reaction to the experience by calling it 'torture'"
(Shenkman 27). This shows that students do not understand the importance of politics and are rather
bored with the current news. Formal Academic example The American public rarely reads the newspaper
anymore because most people do not think the news is of that much

Biography Of Robert E. Lee
A Tribute to the 28th North Carolina
History is usually written by the victors of war. The Civil War is no different. We often hear stories about
the famous Iron Brigade and its tenacious fighting ability or of the "fighting" 69th Irish Regiment of
New York but many historians have overlooked the epic sacrifices Southern soldiers endured. Sure,
everyone has heard of Robert E. Lee or "Stonewall" Jackson, but the men under their command are the
reasons for their fame. Many times, the men from a certain geographical region are grouped together,
whose combined regiments formed brigades. This paper is a tribute to the men of North Carolina who,
gave their lives fighting for the Confederate cause; with a focus on the 28th Regiment of North ... Show

(28th)7 The following year, after the Confederate state of South Carolina captured Fort Sumter on April
7, 1861, much of this sentiment quickly changed in response to President Lincoln's calling for 75,000
volunteers to invade the South and put down the rebellion. (28th)7 Governor John W. Ellis of North
Carolina quickly replied to President Lincoln, denying him troops from his state citing him with
infringing the constitution. The Governor then called for 30,000 state volunteers and quickly seized
Federal forts Caswell and Johnston, the Federal arsenal at Fayetteville, and the United States mint at
Charlotte until the state could hold a convention to decide on the secession question. (28th)7 The
Secession Convention convened on May 20, 1861 which consisted of 120 elected delegates from each
county. The same day, they voted to secede from the Union, thus joining the Confederate States in the
war for Southern Independence. The Unionist sentiment within the state had truly changed and with it,
her hopes for peace! North Carolina was now at war! The state, ill prepared as she was, scrambled to
form an army. In all regions of the state, men young and old flocked to join their neighbors as soldiers.
The 28th North Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment was formed near High Point, NC at Camp Fisher.

Gullah Culture Research Paper
The Gullah/Geechee people are a group of Black Americans from North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, and Florida. The Gullah/Geechee people are a distinctive group of African Americans that have
been the most successful in preserving customs and traditions from their Africa culture. This group has
maintained their native tradition and customs in America more than any other African American group.
According to National Geographic "An environmental impact statement published in 2005 estimated that
200,000 people of Gullah and Geechee heritage live along the southeast coast" (Otterbourg, 2014, p 11).

Slavery Was An Important Part Of North Carolina 's History
Slavery has been part of North Carolina's history since the late 1600s and early 1700s when the
Europeans settled. The majority of the first slaves brought to the colony were from Africa. North
Carolina did not play a major role in the slave trade because of its geography, which made it dangerous
for slave ships to land on the coast of North Carolina. Therefore, slave traders would port to the north or
south, Richmond or Charleston. Slavery was an important part of North Carolina 's history because it
was such a big impact in America and their economy was mostly plantation based, which required
massive amounts of slaves to work on fields. In 1729, when Carolina split into North and South, North
Carolina had approximately 6,000 slaves, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most records indicate that young children were sold with their mothers, but there are several instances of
single purchases of very young slaves. Because young slaves were seen as long–term investments,
slaveholders often found that the lower purchasing prices for them more than compensated for the lack
of any real productivity for several years. The nonagricultural activity that involved more slaves more
profitably than any other was mining. In 1828 the discovery of gold along various streams in the South
Mountains of Burke and Rutherford counties led to a gold rush in western North Carolina that lasted for
about five years. Mining towns quickly sprang up as slave owners from eastern North Carolina and
Virginia joined local masters in putting their slaves to work in the mines and along the streams. An
observer at a Rutherford County mine saw slaves employed primarily in "washing"ore. They appeared
very submissive but were "watched closely to prevent their secreting any pieces of gold they might find."
The North Carolina Slave Code of 1715, was a law that defined the status of a slave and the rights and
responsibilities of slave owners. Slaves were required to carry a ticket from their owner whenever they
left the plantation. The ticket stated where they were traveling and for what reason. The law

A Third Faction : Cherokee
A Third Faction: Cherokee in the Civil War

November 21, 2014
When one thinks about the Civil War, we mostly think of America split in half and fighting to the bitter
end. While most of the fighting was indeed American against American, it is easy to forget that there was
a "foreign" power at play during this conflict. The Native Americans also had a stake in this war. Though
they were confined to the Indian Territory, they knew conflict on their lands was all but inevitable, and
the realization of this conflict in turn caused conflict of its own. These Native tribes had three options, all
of which with pros and cons. They could do their best to remain neutral, join the Union, ... Show more

Pike was initially successful with the Five Civilized Tribes, except for the Cherokee Nation. The
Cherokee had been forcefully removed from their homes in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, and
the tribe still resented the South for their unfair treatment. A rift in the upper ranks of the Cherokee
nation stalled and weakened their joining with the confederacy. This schism was between the "mixed
bloods" and "full bloods". "Mixed bloods" were the educated, intelligent, prosperous Cherokee. Their
parentage, as implied by their name, are both White and Cherokee. They are deeply hated by the "full
bloods", whose parentage was pure. This hatred is due mostly because of how the "mixed bloods"
responded to Indian Removal. They knew that trying to fight against the United States government
would be a futile endeavor, and even though their homes in the South, they quietly agreed and moved to
the Indian Territory. "Full bloods" bitterly opposed removal, and hated their "mixed blood" counterparts
for complying with removal.
The head of the Cherokee Nation at this time was Chief John Ross, who led the faction of "full blood"
Cherokee. Chief Ross served this position from 1828 to 1866, so he led his people through both the
Indian Removal and the Civil War. Despite his affiliation with the "full bloods" Ross was

Roberto Clemente
My five page paper is on a famous baseball star named Roberto Clemente. As he was very talented, he
also cared and loved for everyone. He would help those in need and enjoy it too. All around Roberto
Clemente was a wonderful man. In these next five pages I will be talking about his life and how he was a
good samaritan throughout his life.
Roberto Clemente was born in the summer in August 18, 1934. He was born in a house of concrete and
wood on an old country road in Barrio San Anton, Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven
children. His father was a foreman overseeing sugar–cane cutters and helped deliver sand and gravel for
a construction company. His mother did laundry, ran a grocery store and did other jobs on the sugar–cane
plantation. Roberto did odd jobs so he could help the family and buy himself a bicycle. Growing up,
Roberto played baseball and participated in track and field. He won medals for the javelin throw and
short distance races. Throwing the javelin strengthened his arm for throwing a baseball. Roberto was a
very athletic boy.
Roberto Clemente had four brothers and two sisters. He did have to work with his father loading and
unloading trucks because his family was poor. He was very interested in baseball ever since he was
young and played against teams in his neighborhood. He went to Vizcarrondo High School in

Boone, Nc : Water Intake Project
Boone, NC – Water Intake Project
In 2008, the town of Boone began a new project called The New River Project. This project was
designed to ensure that the town of Boone had enough water to meet the needs of the town as it grew.
This project explored several sites for a water intake facility and proposed a site in Todd, North Carolina
on the South Fork of the New River (Town of Boone, 2008). This project was presented to the residents
of Watauga County as a need to ensure water was available as their growth edged nearer to maximum
capacity for the available water.
The policy for North Carolina Department of Environment & Natural Resources (NCDENR) is for
communities to plan for expansion at 80% capacity and expand at 90% capacity. The town of Boone
reported that in 2006 the 80% mark was reached, and it was projected to meet the 90% mark in 2009.
After meeting and planning with engineers from W.K. Dickson, a firm chosen for their expertise in the
project type, a plan was written and presented at a Special Meeting of Boone Town Council in 2009.
This meeting allowed several concerns of citizens to be voiced and brought up several issues with the
proposed water intake facility (Boone Town Council, 2009).
The stakeholders for the proposed project include: Ashe County Residents and officials, Boone
Residents and officials, Appalachian State University (ASU), Recreational businesses, environmentalists,

Vacation In Myrtle Beach Essay examples
Last summer my friends and I packed up and took a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The
excitement of the strip and the relaxation of the beach allured me to this particular vacation spot. If you
are looking for an entertaining and relaxing way to spend the hot days of summer, Myrtle Beach has
plenty to offer.
Myrtle Beach stretches up the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina. The drive takes
approximately six hours from East Tennessee State University. Our trip during the summer made for a
great vacation, the temperature stayed between the 80's and 90's, perfect sun tanning weather. The
friendly smiles and southern hospitality mixed well with the warm climate.

Myrtle Beach has many hotels and resorts to chose from. Most of them sit either right on the beach or
across the street. The rates usually run weekly from Sunday to Saturday. A week's stay always gives me
enough time to do and see all I want. The inexpensive hotels, as stated earlier, can be found on the strip.
These hotels normally run about $180 a week for a room with two double beds. The resort areas,
however, cost around $400 a week depending on where you stay. I recommend the place that I stayed
when I was a child, the Breakers Resort. The Resort includes an oceanfront view, two pools, a hot tub,
poolside bar and restaurant. Wherever you decide to stay you are sure to enjoy the atmosphere and
excitement of Myrtle Beach.
Restaurants in Myrtle Beach appear almost as plentiful as the hotels. Where you eat may depend on how
much money you want to spend. My friends and I, as typical college students, did not have much money
to spend. So we ate at the local fast food restaurants, such as, Burger King, Taco Bell and McDonalds,
for the majority of the trip. We found, however, that the River City Café had good food for a great price.
If you would like to eat a more cordial dinner, the Calabash Seafood restaurant has sensational seafood
entrée's.
With all the hotels nestled along the coast, the most obvious attraction is the beach itself. The beautiful
water and clean beach makes for a

Michael Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game, on and off of the court.
Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 17, 1963. After he was born, he and his family
moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, and he grew up there as a child and a young adult ("Michael
Jordan"). His father worked at a General Electric plant as a supervisor. Jordan was raised in a family
who only knew working hard and playing sport, but Jordan could never keep steady hours at work
because of his dedication to basketball and baseball (Kram; Parks). Michael Jordan's early life, college

NBA three months after that tragedy. Jordan was seeking to become a professional baseball player in

The Reconstruction After The Civil War
As a country, America has gone through many political and governmental changes. Leaders have come
and gone, all have different goals and objectives for the outcome of America's future. As history takes its
course, most of the most have the same ending of coming to an end to start something new. One such
movement was the Reconstruction. Reconstruction was a time period between 1865 and 1877 following
the Civil War, during which people of the United States worked to put the country back together again,
introducing a new set of significant challenges. Though, like all things in life, it did come to an end, the
resulting outcome had been labeled both a success and a failure. The Reconstruction after the Civil War
consisted of failures as well as successes. Despite having the intentions of positively affecting the
country, yet failing to do so, the National Government from 1865–1877 successfully integrated many
positive changes. During this time the Reconstruction restored the United States as a unified nation: by
1877, all states acknowledged the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, used the
Freedman's Bureau and Civil Rights Act to help protect former black slaves and poor whites in the South
in the aftermath of the war, and all of the former Confederate states drafted new constitutions reunifying
the Union. In 1865 the Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a
punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly

Unfair Treatment of the Native Americans
Unfair treatment of the Native Americans– the Cherokee Nation
Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less then respectful by the United States'
government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and
to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were "pushed" westward. It was a memorable and tricky time
in the Natives' history. The US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making
big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but
the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. In this essay I will explain why and how

While the Cherokees were uprising with the British, the commander of North Carolina troops, general
Griffith Rutherford attacked the middle towns of the Cherokee nation. Soldiers killed every men and
women on their way or they were taken as prisoners, and about 30 Cherokee towns were left without any
supplies. This was known as the Cherokee Campaign.
The American Revolution ended with peace agreements with the Cherokee Indians, and they gave up all
the lands in the east of the Appalachians. Between 1776 and 1794 there were several treaties, campaigns,
frontier battles of the Cherokees during and after the American Revolution against the American
frontiersmen. This period was called the Chickamauga Wars which was a guerrilla–style war. . In
November 1794 the Treaty of Tellico Blockhouse was signed and this meant the end of the Chickamauga
Wars. The blockhouse ran until 1807 and its purpose was to keep the peace between the nearby Overhill
Cherokee towns and the Euro–American settlers.
In 1827 they proposed a written constitution which was adopted by the Cherokee National Council and it
was the creation of the Cherokee republic. According to this Constitutional Convention the Cherokee
tribe and the whites should adopt peace in terms of self government.
The Cherokee republic had great effect on the US government putting it in crisis. The Cherokees created

A Reminder of the True Meaning of American Icons
Immigrants swimming across the harbor sea and the first thing they see is the Statue of Liberty. Do they
see independence and liberty? Imagine the American flag blowing in the wind on a perfect spring
morning. Do American's see hope and freedom? Does our American patriotic icon's still represent the
same thing that they used to? Has commercialism and cultures lost the true meaning of what the
American flag and the Statue of Liberty stand for? Today's society has lost the importance of respect
towards these icons. The Statue of Liberty was build after the Revolutionary War when the thirteen
colonies won and became the United States of America. In 1865, Frenchman Edouard de Laboulaye
wanted to give the United States a great statue in honor of its independence and liberty. (Strazzabosco–
Hayn, 5) Both the French and American people worked together to build this materpiece. "If a
monument should rise in the United States, as a memorial to their independence, I should think it only
natural if it were built by united effort–a common work of both our nations." (Berenson, 10) The Statue
of Liberty originated in France by liberal supporters of President Lincoln. After hearing of Lincoln's
assassination, these men sought to create a symbol of liberty, "dedicated to Lincoln, the honest man, who
abolished slavery, restored the union, and saved the Republic without veiling the statue of liberty."
(Berenson 11) This was built with independence, liberty and unity in mind.

Jacksonian Era Essay
The Jacksonian Era (1824–1848)
Although the "Age of Jackson" wasn't a time era, which brought forth a great political, social, or
economic freedom and equality to the U.S., it did in fact put our country through a metamorphosis in our
political lives of the nation. The start of a new presidency (Jackson's presidency) was accompanied by
huge numbers of Hickoryites (Jacksonian supporters) and official hopefuls. Many of these hopefuls were
granted their desire of holding office, which is one of the changes brought into Washington by Andrew
Jackson.
The major accomplishments of Jackson during his presidency pertain to his rural upbringing and
democratic beliefs. To name a couple of Jackson's memorable accomplishments and decisions not ...

The selection of officials of Jackson was in many cases the return of a financial grant during
campaigning. The consideration of the ability to govern, have intelligence and responsibility etc. were
ignored in the wake of compensation. Although opposites alike were granted power they were not
always for the continuance of democracy.
Jackson was the most democratic of any president at that time to come to power. In practically all areas
of political application there was the existence of liberal thinking. This was especially apparent in his
previously mentioned appointment of officials. Jackson considered the roles of officials fairly simple and
could and should be carried out by all people not just the members of the socially and intellectually elite.
The belief of complete equality is with out a doubt Jacksonian. Despite this already democratic view,
Jackson took it one step further and appointed the illiterate and plain incompetent members of society to
office.
Tariffs plagued the president also many times, but the most remembered were the "Tariff of
Abominations" in 1828, and the tariff of 1832. South Carolina passed an Ordinance of Nullification, and
upset Jackson tremendously. They stated that those tariffs were null and void to South Carolina, and it
would be unlawful to collect for duties. They also had the nerve to warn the

Watie and his followers continued to fight for the South.
The focus is turned to the Pamunkey of Virginia and the Lumbee of North Carolina. These tribes did not
like the white supremacist attitude and served for the benefit of the North. The Pamunkey worked as
river boat pilots for General McClellan's Army during the Peninsula campaign in 1862. The Lumbee's
were fighting the Confederate Home Guard during Sherman's Carolina campaign. Both Pamunkey and
the Lumbee thought themselves as avengers to people of color.
In Mr. Hauptman book he writes of how important the Eastern Band of Cherokee and the Catawba of
South Carolina were to the Confederacy. The Cherokee had over four hundred men led by William
Holland Thomas, a white man who had been adopted by the Cherokee when he was a child. With
Thomas's leadership they prevented Union attacks along Confederate communication and rail links.
They also intimated Union supporters in east Tennessee and western North Carolina. The Cherokees did
so well that they were allowed to keep some land in western North Carolina along the Tennessee border.
The Catawba were dependent on whites and became the first to join the South as infantrymen. They also
worked to capture runaway slaves trying to make their way North. The Indians in the Northeast join the
North mostly because of dependency on the white man and out of a since of loyalty they served as union

Psychology : Emotions And Moods
This research paper is written on the Chapter 8, Emotions and Moods. My research is based on my
work–related experience (direct observation). My organizational issue is Emotions in the Workplace and
will be analyzed using the following two core concepts Positive Affect and Negative Affect. I work for
the Richland County Sheriff Department and saw different emotions on an everyday basis. With different
emotions and moods can cause problems as our motto is to "Protect and Serve. How can we expect the
live by this motto when some officers bring negative emotions and moods to a call of service which can
bring negative light on the agency? It has to be an understand that the public feeds off our emotions
which can put us in a disadvantage when trying to solve crimes. Emotions cannot be neutral. They are
"markers" that are grouped into general mood states and they affect perception and therefore perceived
reality (Stretch, 2009).
Positive Affect
According to Robbins and Judges (2009), positive affect dimension that consists of specific positive
emotions such as excitement, self–assurance, and cheerfulness, at the high end and boredom,
sluggishness, and tiredness at the low end (p.255). At the Sheriff Department there was a lot of
individuals that was in this state of mind each and every day. You would see them always happy with a

The Importance of Flag Detail in the Military Essay
The Importance of Flag Detail
In today's society, the American flag is a symbol of freedom, liberty, and justice among a number of
other values. As Americans, we value the flag for its representation during the revolutionary war and the
everlasting significance of today. As soldiers, we pledge to honor, serve, and protect the flag and the
United States of America at all cost. In this paper, the relationship between the American flag and the
United States Army will be explored through the histories of both. Furthermore, the importance of flag
detail will be discussed by linking the two entities together as one. Without the American flag's
representation, the Army has no purpose; no means to exist.

today as of 2009 consists of the around 2 million soldiers stretched across the five main branches: Army,
Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. Today's United States Army consists of over 1 million
soldiers with about half serving on active duty. The United States Army follows 7 basic principles:
loyalty, duty, respect, selfless–service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. It is the duty of an
American soldier to defend the US flag which symbolizes the United States of America.
As seen in the histories of the United States Army and the American flag, the two of them go hand and
hand. It is important as soldiers to honor the flag and take flag detail seriously. The American flag is a
symbol of all the brothers who have died for the United States, all the people that are allowed to live free
in our democratic government, and the people in other countries that now able to do the same due to the
United States efforts. According to the article, "Honoring the Flag–Detail More Than Raising, Lowering

Essay on Battle of Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort is in Charleston's harbor. The fort was not
even complete when war broke out. This was a big turning point for the United States of America. It
separated the north from the south and in some cases it separated families. This war would impact how
the United States saw slavery. It is the most deadly war that the United States has every seen in its
history. It all began with the secession of South Carolina. After this an understanding was established
between the authorities in Washington and the members of Congress from South Carolina. They both
agreed that the forts, Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, would not be attacked, or seized as an act of war,
until proper negotiations for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the government of the United States, and under that impression my government has refrained from

The Fight for Racial Equality In North Carolina Essay
Plessy vs. Ferguson was a landmark decision passed in 1896 that instituted the practice of 'separate but
equal' in American society. The 'separate but equal' doctrine was an oppressive system of racial
segregation which greatly lessened the rights of all minorities especially in public education. The fight
for educational equality made public schools in North Carolina and other states in the south a major area
of conflict. Wilma Peebles–Wilkins noted, 'Upward mobility through the educational structure is in
keeping with the desires of post–World War II black Americans to enhance their economic, political, and
social statuses.' There were many court cases in which organizations such as the National Association for

Events and People that Shaped History Essay
Numerous events and people have played a great part in shaping this country of ours into what it is
today, the United States of America. Choosing such events or people to talk about is no easy task since
there are so many that play a key role in how this country was founded, but the three different ones that
will be covered in this paper are George Washington, the Revolutionary War, and finally the Civil War.
One influential person that helped us found this nation was George Washington, Washington was born on
February 22, 1732 in Virginia; he was the first President of the United States of America. Being
commander–in–chief of the Continental Army is not really what he is known for but it is important in

The Revolutionary war was started in 1775 by the colonies rebelling against the British for the taxes and
regulations they were forcing on them. The thirteen colonies decided they did not want to pay the taxes
that the King was putting on them so they came together to fight the British with the help of a leader,
George Washington. The war went on for eight years and many battles occurred in this war most of them
Washington lost except for the important ones that helped us to finally win the war against the British.
The constitution of the United States is a very important piece that came as a result of the Revolutionary
war, and the document is still used in our system of government today; it outlines how our government
should function and what rules they must follow and what freedoms we as Americans can have, which
include freedom of speech. So the main significance of the Revolutionary war was that it paved the way
to create a nation that is not governed by kings, queens, or even emperors but instead governed by a
representative government for everyone so they can have a voice and be heard with the ability to have
freedom of speech and representation in government.
Finally the Civil war, this war started because of the 1860 Presidential election between Abraham
Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge, John bell, and Stephen A. Douglas. Many people in the south believed
that Lincoln was a radical abolitionist and that he was going to end slavery in the south, so

North Carolina: Most Involved Area of the Fracking Process
Fracking has become a nation wide debate and one that doesn't seem to have an end. The state of North
Carolina is one of the most involved areas of the fracking process. "North Carolina is sitting on top of
large natural gas reserves (WRAL 1)." For this reason, many natural gas companies come to North
Carolina for business. This helps the states economy because it produces more income and creates more
jobs. The only problem is that the hydraulic fracking process has a reputation of contaminating local
drinking water. This causes controversy with the citizens in cities such as Raleigh. Many cities welcome
fracking while others try to completely ban it. The worst problem with fracking is that there seems to be
no alternatives for it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Post Civil War North Carolina
Post–Civil War North Carolina, as a part of the "New South", was supposed to be an economically and
morally prosperous state that was no longer reliant on slave labor. Unfortunately, the abolition of slavery
did not abolish the misfortune of black and white North Carolinians alike before 1900. Racism was still
very much alive, blacks did not enjoy the rights they supposedly acquired after the war, the same rich
families from before the war were still rich, and the people that were poor before the war were still
struggling.
The "New South" mentality attempted to modernize North Carolina's previously agrarian economy
through industrialization. Businessmen, such as Richard J. Reynolds, strategically erected factories in
North Carolina for access to its prestigious railroads to swiftly transport their products. Factory owners
had no trouble finding employees, as many North Carolinians were eager to avoid the hardships of farm
labor. Towns began to rise around the factories after the influx of laborers came about. Such a plethora of
potential workers allowed factory owners to pay their employees drastically low wages as they reaped
the benefits of cheap labor. Low wages combined with pitiful working conditions resulted in these
factory towns resembling life on slave plantations before the war.
North Carolina tobacco factories manufactured and sold such high volumes of tobacco products world–
wide that they became the face of the industry. For example, a Bull Durham smoking

Women During The Civil War
The Civil War has often been referred to as the war between brothers, but when the war started women
were still expected to stay at home and take care of the house and children, with little to no income.
Many stories that originated from the Civil War talk about the battlefront and not the home front. This
leaves us wondering what the spouses of the soldiers did to survive, especially if they had multiple
children in the home. We do not know what women did during the war and if they had any impact
whatsoever. Comparing Charleston and Philadelphia, which were the second largest cities in their
respective areas at the time, it seems that Philadelphia women would have more of an impact on the war
than the women in Charleston. Why ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two cities played major roles in the war whether it was Charleston's port or Philadelphia's
infamous "refreshment saloons" both cities had a lot to offer to the soldiers during the war. Mary
Chesnut writes a diary following accounts of multiple Southern cities, and shows how women in
Charleston were greatly affected during the war. Mary Ashhurst shares her memories of the war and how
they affected her daily routine for years. Many women on both sides dedicated most of their day to
making garments for soldiers. Both of these cities had so much to offer during the Civil War, though
Charleston was very prominent because of Fort Sumter, Philadelphia was overlooked in the history
books. We know that Charleston had a port and Philadelphia was landlocked except for the Delaware
River. Because of these two water resources, it makes both of these cities very important to their
respective sides.
What was the South like during the war?
Life in the South was more difficult than the North. During the war, the Confederate States of America
consisted of eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union in the early 1860's. In the South, if you
owned more than twenty slaves you didn't have to fight in the war. Fighting for the idea of independence
and a way of life based on slavery, many Southerners were for the idea of war. The Union had blockaded

Human And Environmental Interactions Of The Salem Creek...
Human and Environmental Interactions Each watershed varies depending on location. The Salem Creek
watershed naturally consists of rocks, vegetation, water, clay and loam soils, slopes, and juvenile aquatic
life. Conversely, there is naturally some stream bank and soil erosion. As for human features, the
watershed consists of drainage pipes, sewage pipes, bridges, mounds of cement, and pollution sources.
Most of the human features are generally in the highly urbanized areas of the watershed, which consists
of northwestern portion of Winston–Salem, NC. There were also impervious surfaces bordering both
sides of the watershed. On the stretch parallel to Old Salem Road, there was Old Salem Road on one side

These events had a major impact on the country at that time. He had to face obstacles that presidents

Congress did so, but it was not enough for South Carolina. A month later a special convention met at the

(Coit 17). He also stated that to annul a law was "incompatible with the existence of the Union," and "to
say that any State may at pleasure secede . . . is to say that the United States is not a nation"(Coit 17). He
meant that nullification or secession would be an act of war.
He also stated in his famous proclamation to the South Carolinians, "The ordinance is founded . . . on the
strange position that anyone State may not only declare an act of Congress void, but prohibit its
execution; that they may do this consistently with the Constitution; that the true construction of that
instrument permits a State to retain its place in the Union and yet be bound by no other of its laws than
those it may choose to consider constitutional"(Commager 188). This clearly shows that Jackson thought
that nullification was illegal according to the Constitution, and any attempt to enact it was a rebellious
act of treason. The Constitution wasn't specific on either side of the issue, but Jackson manipulated the

How Important Is Mapping Policy? The South Carolina...
Introduction
How important is mapping policy to an agency? Our text states, "policy governs the relationship among
agency staff members, provide order and direction". Policy can help to develop a plan of action to
address a social issue such as mental illness. As a mental health counselor, I chose to policy map the
South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH). I will examine this agency and its policies,
including its social agency history, mission, money stream, purpose, budget, overall purpose, and
effectiveness. My mission is to create a policy map that explains the agency's purpose, how it operates,
and whom it serves.
Mission Statement:
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health Services serves adults, children and families who
suffer from mental health illness and emotional disorders. "The department has a commitment to
eliminating stigma and promoting the philosophy of recovery, to achieving our goals in collaborating
with stakeholders, and to assuring the highest quality of culturally competent service possible".
One of SCDMH's goals is not to have individuals leave their support system in order to receive treatment
and allow them to continue leisure pursuits such as employment and education. SCDMH believes that

The Nfl Is Exempt From Paying Taxes
As of 2014, the NFL operates as a non–profit organization –– the NFL is exempt from paying taxes.
However, even though the Carolina Panthers is under the NFL, it is operating as a for–profit business
(Patrick Doyle 2014). Therefore, like all for–profit businesses, the Panthers should ideally generate a
profitable income to continue operating. As a result, the Panthers' financial health or future earnings is a
quantitative criteria we included in our recommendation.
In 2013, the Panthers not only generated $283 million in revenue but also incurred over $150 million in
costs (Statista 2014). Due to the Panthers' amazing playoffs in the previous years, Forbes Valuation ––
before Greg Hardy's incident–– has projected the Panthers' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the table, sponsorships, merchandise, and ticket sales account for 60 percent of the
Panthers' earnings. In our analysis, we conservatively assumed that Greg Hardy's domestic violence
incident will directly reduce the above–mentioned revenue sources.
Greg Hardy's Effect on Panthers' Sponsorships
Ever since Greg Hardy's recent domestic violence incident, most of the Panthers' major corporate
sponsors (Bank of America, PepsiCo, MillerCoors, Carolinas Medical Center, Anheuser–Busch InBev,
and U.S. Airways) issued their statements of disapproval and urged the team to address this issue
appropriately.
Although Erik Spanberg and Adam O'Daniel (2014) stated that none of the Panthers' financial sponsors
will likely pull away from their donations, these major corporate sponsors don't want to further tarnish
their reputation with the NFL's bad publicity. Nonetheless, if a NFL's future decision regarding domestic
violence, a widely debated topic in the NFL, generates more negative publicity, these major corporations
are willing to stop sponsoring their teams. For example, due to the Adrian Peterson's famous domestic
violence and child abuse case, major sponsor Nike issued the following statement:
"Nike in no way condones child abuse or domestic violence of any kind and has shared our concerns
with the NFL. We have suspended our contract with Adrian Peterson (Molly Geary 2014)."
From referencing precedents on sponsors

cannot distinguish a particularly impoverished area. Along main roads such as Emmanuel Church Rd,

Tyranny of Andrew Jackson
The Tyranny of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson: the common man or the first king of America? He is viewed by history in many
different ways, some see him as the man who granted universal white male suffrage, created a more
democratic way to elect electoral voters to congress and replaced caucuses with national nominating
conventions; and others, who saw past this false representation and saw how in his eight years in office,
he vetoed 12 bills, forced Native Americans from their homeland, ignored supreme court decisions and
let his personal life affect his presidential decisions. Jackson, as captured in his portrait in the National
Portrait gallery was a stern man with a strong sense of self–reliance. And while these qualities can be
seen as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when introduced the Maysville Road Bill, he was quick to shoot it down. Behind the Bill was
Henry Clay, a politician from Kentucky. In previous years, Clay had earned credit from Jackson's faults
and publicly said that Jackson's part in the Trail of Tears "stained the national honor." The Maysville
Road Bill was a plan to build a twenty mile stretch of highway within Clay's home state of Kentucky.
Jackson vetoed it after it had been passed by congress, declaring that the bill violated the economic
affairs of the government and would put America is greater financial crisis. In reality, it was a personal
attack against Henry Clay (Van Deusen 52–54).
Despite Jackson's support for the growth and prosper of the West, both he and his constituents lobbied to
raise tariffs on imported textiles such as fur, flax, hemp, liquor and wool to about 50 percent their
intended value. The increase of prices from other countries was greatly beneficial to the Northern
economy, who were able to sell more of their products, but detrimental to the South. Because the South
simply produced raw goods, it was essential that they imported manufactured goods for their general
well being. This tariff not only threatened to reduce the flow of goods from Britain, but the loss of
money made it difficult for them to purchase raw materials. Representative of South Carolina and long
time foe of Jackson, John C Calhoun spoke

  • 2. American Public 's Knowledge And Involvement This essay briefly describes the current state of the Americans public's knowledge and involvement in news, geography, and politics, citing both anecdotal and formal academic examples. First, this essay describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in news. Then, this essay describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in geography. Finally, it describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in politics. American Public's Understanding and Involvement in News The American public has very little understanding and involvement in the news. It is assumed that the people are stupid, ignorant, disregarded, and that they seek unreliable sources of information about important news events (Shenkman 14). The two causes that suggest this is that the public is either uninterested or is not well–informed. Anecdotal example The American public has almost no understanding and involvement in the news. The younger generation, specifically, finds absolutely no interest in the news and believes that it is irrelevant. For example, "when one college teacher required a class to listen to NPR for an hour, one student summed up the general reaction to the experience by calling it 'torture'" (Shenkman 27). This shows that students do not understand the importance of politics and are rather bored with the current news. Formal Academic example The American public rarely reads the newspaper anymore because most people do not think the news is of that much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We often hear stories about the famous Iron Brigade and its tenacious fighting ability or of the "fighting" 69th Irish Regiment of New York but many historians have overlooked the epic sacrifices Southern soldiers endured. Sure, everyone has heard of Robert E. Lee or "Stonewall" Jackson, but the men under their command are the reasons for their fame. (28th)7 The following year, after the Confederate state of South Carolina captured Fort Sumter on April 7, 1861, much of this sentiment quickly changed in response to President Lincoln's calling for 75,000 volunteers to invade the South and put down the rebellion. (28th)7 Governor John W. Ellis of North Carolina quickly replied to President Lincoln, denying him troops from his state citing him with infringing the constitution. The Governor then called for 30,000 state volunteers and quickly seized Federal forts Caswell and Johnston, the Federal arsenal at Fayetteville, and the United States mint at Charlotte until the state could hold a convention to decide on the secession question. (28th)7 The Secession Convention convened on May 20, 1861 which consisted of 120 elected delegates from each county. The same day, they voted to secede from the Union, thus joining the Confederate States in the war for Southern Independence. The Unionist sentiment within the state had truly changed and with it, her hopes for peace! North Carolina was now at war! The state, ill prepared as she was, scrambled to form an army. In all regions of the state, men young and old flocked to join their neighbors as soldiers. The 28th North Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment was formed near High Point, NC at Camp Fisher. • 5. Slavery Was An Important Part Of North Carolina 's History Slavery has been part of North Carolina's history since the late 1600s and early 1700s when the Europeans settled. The majority of the first slaves brought to the colony were from Africa. North Carolina did not play a major role in the slave trade because of its geography, which made it dangerous for slave ships to land on the coast of North Carolina. Therefore, slave traders would port to the north or south, Richmond or Charleston. Slavery was an important part of North Carolina 's history because it was such a big impact in America and their economy was mostly plantation based, which required massive amounts of slaves to work on fields. In 1729, when Carolina split into North and South, North Carolina had approximately 6,000 slaves, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most records indicate that young children were sold with their mothers, but there are several instances of single purchases of very young slaves. Because young slaves were seen as long–term investments, slaveholders often found that the lower purchasing prices for them more than compensated for the lack of any real productivity for several years. The nonagricultural activity that involved more slaves more profitably than any other was mining. In 1828 the discovery of gold along various streams in the South Mountains of Burke and Rutherford counties led to a gold rush in western North Carolina that lasted for about five years. Mining towns quickly sprang up as slave owners from eastern North Carolina and Virginia joined local masters in putting their slaves to work in the mines and along the streams. An observer at a Rutherford County mine saw slaves employed primarily in "washing"ore. They appeared very submissive but were "watched closely to prevent their secreting any pieces of gold they might find." The North Carolina Slave Code of 1715, was a law that defined the status of a slave and the rights and responsibilities of slave owners. A Third Faction : Cherokee A Third Faction: Cherokee in the Civil War Nathan T Watson Historical Methods Dr. Dollar November 21, 2014 When one thinks about the Civil War, we mostly think of America split in half and fighting to the bitter end. While most of the fighting was indeed American against American, it is easy to forget that there was a "foreign" power at play during this conflict. The Native Americans also had a stake in this war. Though they were confined to the Indian Territory, they knew conflict on their lands was all but inevitable, and the realization of this conflict in turn caused conflict of its own. These Native tribes had three options, all of which with pros and cons. They could do their best to remain neutral, join the Union, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pike was initially successful with the Five Civilized Tribes, except for the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee had been forcefully removed from their homes in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, and the tribe still resented the South for their unfair treatment. A rift in the upper ranks of the Cherokee nation stalled and weakened their joining with the confederacy. This schism was between the "mixed bloods" and "full bloods". "Mixed bloods" were the educated, intelligent, prosperous Cherokee. Their parentage, as implied by their name, are both White and Cherokee. They are deeply hated by the "full bloods", whose parentage was pure. This hatred is due mostly because of how the "mixed bloods" responded to Indian Removal. They knew that trying to fight against the United States government would be a futile endeavor, and even though their homes in the South, they quietly agreed and moved to the Indian Territory. "Full bloods" bitterly opposed removal, and hated their "mixed blood" counterparts for complying with removal. The head of the Cherokee Nation at this time was Chief John Ross, who led the faction of "full blood" Cherokee. Chief Ross served this position from 1828 to 1866, so he led his people through both the Indian Removal and the Civil War. Despite his affiliation with the "full bloods" Ross was ... In these next five pages I will be talking about his life and how he was a good samaritan throughout his life. Roberto Clemente was born in the summer in August 18, 1934. He was born in a house of concrete and wood on an old country road in Barrio San Anton, Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven children. His father was a foreman overseeing sugar–cane cutters and helped deliver sand and gravel for a construction company. His mother did laundry, ran a grocery store and did other jobs on the sugar–cane plantation. Roberto did odd jobs so he could help the family and buy himself a bicycle. Growing up, Roberto played baseball and participated in track and field. He won medals for the javelin throw and short distance races. Throwing the javelin strengthened his arm for throwing a baseball. Roberto was a very athletic boy. Roberto Clemente had four brothers and two sisters. He did have to work with his father loading and unloading trucks because his family was poor. He was very interested in baseball ever since he was young and played against teams in his neighborhood. This project was designed to ensure that the town of Boone had enough water to meet the needs of the town as it grew. This project explored several sites for a water intake facility and proposed a site in Todd, North Carolina on the South Fork of the New River (Town of Boone, 2008). This project was presented to the residents of Watauga County as a need to ensure water was available as their growth edged nearer to maximum capacity for the available water. The policy for North Carolina Department of Environment & Natural Resources (NCDENR) is for communities to plan for expansion at 80% capacity and expand at 90% capacity. The town of Boone reported that in 2006 the 80% mark was reached, and it was projected to meet the 90% mark in 2009. After meeting and planning with engineers from W.K. Dickson, a firm chosen for their expertise in the project type, a plan was written and presented at a Special Meeting of Boone Town Council in 2009. This meeting allowed several concerns of citizens to be voiced and brought up several issues with the proposed water intake facility (Boone Town Council, 2009). The stakeholders for the proposed project include: Ashe County Residents and officials, Boone Residents and officials, Appalachian State University (ASU), Recreational businesses, environmentalists, Watauga residents and officials, and Todd Residents. • 9. Vacation In Myrtle Beach Essay examples Last summer my friends and I packed up and took a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The excitement of the strip and the relaxation of the beach allured me to this particular vacation spot. If you are looking for an entertaining and relaxing way to spend the hot days of summer, Myrtle Beach has plenty to offer. Myrtle Beach stretches up the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina. The drive takes approximately six hours from East Tennessee State University. Myrtle Beach has many hotels and resorts to chose from. Most of them sit either right on the beach or across the street. The rates usually run weekly from Sunday to Saturday. A week's stay always gives me enough time to do and see all I want. The inexpensive hotels, as stated earlier, can be found on the strip. These hotels normally run about $180 a week for a room with two double beds. The resort areas, however, cost around $400 a week depending on where you stay. I recommend the place that I stayed when I was a child, the Breakers Resort. The Resort includes an oceanfront view, two pools, a hot tub, poolside bar and restaurant. Wherever you decide to stay you are sure to enjoy the atmosphere and excitement of Myrtle Beach. Restaurants in Myrtle Beach appear almost as plentiful as the hotels. Where you eat may depend on how much money you want to spend. My friends and I, as typical college students, did not have much money to spend. So we ate at the local fast food restaurants, such as, Burger King, Taco Bell and McDonalds, for the majority of the trip. We found, however, that the River City Café had good food for a great price. If you would like to eat a more cordial dinner, the Calabash Seafood restaurant has sensational seafood entrée's. With all the hotels nestled along the coast, the most obvious attraction is the beach itself. The beautiful water and clean beach makes for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Reconstruction After The Civil War As a country, America has gone through many political and governmental changes. Leaders have come and gone, all have different goals and objectives for the outcome of America's future. As history takes its course, most of the most have the same ending of coming to an end to start something new. One such movement was the Reconstruction. Reconstruction was a time period between 1865 and 1877 following the Civil War, during which people of the United States worked to put the country back together again, introducing a new set of significant challenges. Though, like all things in life, it did come to an end, the resulting outcome had been labeled both a success and a failure. The Reconstruction after the Civil War consisted of failures as well as successes. Despite having the intentions of positively affecting the country, yet failing to do so, the National Government from 1865–1877 successfully integrated many positive changes. During this time the Reconstruction restored the United States as a unified nation: by 1877, all states acknowledged the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, used the Freedman's Bureau and Civil Rights Act to help protect former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the war, and all of the former Confederate states drafted new constitutions reunifying the Union. Has commercialism and cultures lost the true meaning of what the American flag and the Statue of Liberty stand for? Today's society has lost the importance of respect towards these icons. The Statue of Liberty was build after the Revolutionary War when the thirteen colonies won and became the United States of America. In 1865, Frenchman Edouard de Laboulaye wanted to give the United States a great statue in honor of its independence and liberty. (Strazzabosco– Hayn, 5) Both the French and American people worked together to build this materpiece. "If a monument should rise in the United States, as a memorial to their independence, I should think it only natural if it were built by united effort–a common work of both our nations." (Berenson, 10) The Statue of Liberty originated in France by liberal supporters of President Lincoln. After hearing of Lincoln's assassination, these men sought to create a symbol of liberty, "dedicated to Lincoln, the honest man, who abolished slavery, restored the union, and saved the Republic without veiling the statue of liberty." In practically all areas of political application there was the existence of liberal thinking. This was especially apparent in his previously mentioned appointment of officials. Jackson considered the roles of officials fairly simple and could and should be carried out by all people not just the members of the socially and intellectually elite. The belief of complete equality is with out a doubt Jacksonian. • 27. North Carolina: Most Involved Area of the Fracking Process Fracking has become a nation wide debate and one that doesn't seem to have an end. The state of North Carolina is one of the most involved areas of the fracking process. "North Carolina is sitting on top of large natural gas reserves (WRAL 1)." For this reason, many natural gas companies come to North Carolina for business. This helps the states economy because it produces more income and creates more jobs. The only problem is that the hydraulic fracking process has a reputation of contaminating local drinking water. This causes controversy with the citizens in cities such as Raleigh. • 28. Post Civil War North Carolina Post–Civil War North Carolina, as a part of the "New South", was supposed to be an economically and morally prosperous state that was no longer reliant on slave labor. Unfortunately, the abolition of slavery did not abolish the misfortune of black and white North Carolinians alike before 1900. Racism was still very much alive, blacks did not enjoy the rights they supposedly acquired after the war, the same rich families from before the war were still rich, and the people that were poor before the war were still struggling. The "New South" mentality attempted to modernize North Carolina's previously agrarian economy through industrialization. Businessmen, such as Richard J. Reynolds, strategically erected factories in North Carolina for access to its prestigious railroads to swiftly transport their products. Factory owners had no trouble finding employees, as many North Carolinians were eager to avoid the hardships of farm labor. Towns began to rise around the factories after the influx of laborers came about. Such a plethora of potential workers allowed factory owners to pay their employees drastically low wages as they reaped the benefits of cheap labor. Low wages combined with pitiful working conditions resulted in these factory towns resembling life on slave plantations before the war. North Carolina tobacco factories manufactured and sold such high volumes of tobacco products world– wide that they became the face of the industry. For example, a Bull Durham smoking ... • 29. Women During The Civil War The Civil War has often been referred to as the war between brothers, but when the war started women were still expected to stay at home and take care of the house and children, with little to no income. Many stories that originated from the Civil War talk about the battlefront and not the home front. This leaves us wondering what the spouses of the soldiers did to survive, especially if they had multiple children in the home. We do not know what women did during the war and if they had any impact whatsoever. Comparing Charleston and Philadelphia, which were the second largest cities in their respective areas at the time, it seems that Philadelphia women would have more of an impact on the war than the women in Charleston. Why ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These two cities played major roles in the war whether it was Charleston's port or Philadelphia's infamous "refreshment saloons" both cities had a lot to offer to the soldiers during the war. Mary Chesnut writes a diary following accounts of multiple Southern cities, and shows how women in Charleston were greatly affected during the war. Mary Ashhurst shares her memories of the war and how they affected her daily routine for years. Many women on both sides dedicated most of their day to making garments for soldiers. Both of these cities had so much to offer during the Civil War, though Charleston was very prominent because of Fort Sumter, Philadelphia was overlooked in the history books. We know that Charleston had a port and Philadelphia was landlocked except for the Delaware River. Because of these two water resources, it makes both of these cities very important to their respective sides. What was the South like during the war? Life in the South was more difficult than the North. During the war, the Confederate States of America consisted of eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union in the early 1860's. In the South, if you owned more than twenty slaves you didn't have to fight in the war. Congress did so, but it was not enough for South Carolina. A month later a special convention met at the state capital and nullified the United States tariff acts of 1828 and 1832. Jackson ran for reelection that year without Calhoun and won. He declared, "The Constitution . . . forms a government, not a league" (Coit 17). He also stated that to annul a law was "incompatible with the existence of the Union," and "to say that any State may at pleasure secede . . . is to say that the United States is not a nation"(Coit 17). He meant that nullification or secession would be an act of war. He also stated in his famous proclamation to the South Carolinians, "The ordinance is founded . . . on the strange position that anyone State may not only declare an act of Congress void, but prohibit its execution; that they may do this consistently with the Constitution; that the true construction of that instrument permits a State to retain its place in the Union and yet be bound by no other of its laws than those it may choose to consider constitutional"(Commager 188). Policy can help to develop a plan of action to address a social issue such as mental illness. As a mental health counselor, I chose to policy map the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH). I will examine this agency and its policies, including its social agency history, mission, money stream, purpose, budget, overall purpose, and effectiveness. My mission is to create a policy map that explains the agency's purpose, how it operates, and whom it serves. Mission Statement: The South Carolina Department of Mental Health Services serves adults, children and families who suffer from mental health illness and emotional disorders. "The department has a commitment to eliminating stigma and promoting the philosophy of recovery, to achieving our goals in collaborating with stakeholders, and to assuring the highest quality of culturally competent service possible". One of SCDMH's goals is not to have individuals leave their support system in order to receive treatment and allow them to continue leisure pursuits such as employment and education.
