African American Youth And The Criminal Justice System
Henry Louis Gates once said, "I believe in the law. I think we have a great system of justice. But I
do think that system of justice has been corrupted by racism and classism. I think it's difficult for
'poor people' – poor white people, brown people – to be treated fairly before the law in the same
way that upper–class people are." The racial justice issue that interests me the most is the targeting
of African American youth by the police in the schools and on the streets . Nationwide, more
African American males are at the highest risk of being arrested at school. In fact, black boys are
three times more likely to be arrested at school than their white classmates. It is sad that black youth
are subjected to the legal system at such a young

The Impact On The American Youth During The Jim Crow Era
Section 2: Investigation In America there has always been two debating sides when it comes to the
subject of races, the fight between racist Americans and oppressed people of color ,have made a
mark in American history through the Jim Crow era."Jim Crow," or "Jump Jim Crow," was the name
of a minstrel practice performed in 1828 by its author, Thomas Dartmouth ("Daddy") Rice, and by
many imitators. The term came to be a derogatory epithet for blacks and a designation of their
segregated life. During the Reconstruction era, "carpetbaggers" from the north moved to the South
and formed a coalition with freedmen (freed slaves) and whites who supported Reconstruction.
Together they politically controlled former Confederate states for varying periods.
From the late 1870s, and the end of Reconstruction, Southern state legislatures, no longer controlled
by "carpetbaggers" and freedmen, passed laws requiring separation of whites from "persons of
color." These laws were called Jim Crow, which became a derogatory epithet for blacks and a
designation of their segregated life. Anyone of color, or of probable or strongly suspected black
ancestry in any degree, was a "person of color."('Jim Crow Laws' Were Meant to Enslave) The effect
on the youth during the Jim crow era was seen as early as the separation of ethnicity in schools. The
schools for white children and the schools for negro children shall be conducted separately.

Mexicans And Mexican American Youth
Throughout our history as a nation, we have earned a reputation of undermining the relationships we
have had with minorities and of largely neglecting their needs. Our almost hostile nature towards
minorities in the United States can largely be seen in the treatment of Mexicans and Mexican
American citizens in the times surrounding World War Two. Such hostilities are reflected in our
treatment of Mexican Americans in the late 19th after the Civil War and early 20th centuries, the
Sleepy Lagoon murder responses, and the Zoot Suit riots. My primary source reveals a feeling of
inferiority in the United States by the Mexican American youth due discrimination that they faced,
which can be better understood by analyzing the cultural contexts. As railroads expanded during the
United States western expansionist period in the late 19th century, Mexican immigration along with
Eastern migration grew in the west. Once the Mexican immigrants arrived, they largely occupied
commercial agriculture in large farms, mining industries, and the construction of railroads, but were
generally paid very little. During this time, as Arizona State History Professor Manuel P. Servín
explained, the Mexican Americans that had been here for years had already begun to feel despised
by the Western Expansionists, and were looked at as less American and an unassimilable foreigner.
The lower class Mexican immigrants and citizens largely assimilated on rail road cities, or Sonora
towns, such as Los Angeles, El

What Led to the Collapse of Consensus?
WHAT LED TO THE COLLAPSE OF CONSENSUS?
The 1950's and early 1960's was a time of consensus in the US. By the middle of the 60's the US
experienced a series of shocks which undermined consensus. The assassination of President
Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. The differences in the civil rights movement. The escalation of the
Vietnam War. All of these factors undermined American confidence to change the world and
improve the country. By the late 60's, US society was polarised: divided between different
viewpoints: Youth culture; counter–culture, and multiculturism.
The youth culture was created due to a baby boom in the 50's and 60's as this led to a large youth
population. Most children stayed in school and university for longer. Most had ... Show more

There was an increase in drunkenness and fighting. Movies were blamed, such as: Rebel without a
Cause which starred James Dean. The Blackboard jungle featured rebellious students. Some blamed
Rock 'n' Roll music. There was a fear of open revolt against society: "The gangster of tomorrow is
the Elvis Presley of today". These young people were actively working to bring down the consensus
which had dominated the US for the past decade.
This led to a sexual revolution. The was because of the greater freedom of the pill. The women;s
movement and Supreme Court decision to make explicit books more availible. Movies also became
more explicit. By the 1970's the spreqda of benereal diseases and AIDs caused many young people
to avoid casual relations. By the 80's there an emphasis on virginity and celibacy. The dominant
trends of independence, freedom, the consumer markey and wealth in youth culture remained. Pop
music, fashion, smoking and drugs continued to be the expressions of youth cutlure. By now, the
collaps of consensus was in full swing; the next development would be that of a counter–culture.
Counter culture was the desire for an alternative. It grew because of the influence of the civlil right's
movement; the growing of the anti–war movement; the acceptance that everyone had rights. The
increase on the university population from 16 million in 1960 to 25 million in 1970 helped also.
Drugs had a dramatic effect. Perhaps the greatest pastor of counter–culture

Freedom Of African American Youth
Is general, is it necessary for our youth to be profiled and questioned for everything that we do?
When Martin Luther King, and all the other great civil rights leaders that were taught to them in
schools about walking for our justice and freedom, it seems like the freedom they were discussing
and wanting for their people is the freedom that white American gave to black youth by mistake.
When you look at how our African American youth are treated in wherever they go, it prompts the
question, are they really free? Can our youth actually go apply for jobs like their white counterparts
and actually be looked at for their skills not for the color of their skin. Can our youth actually go to
the grocery store and actually be free to walk around without

Black American Youth And Racial Identity
Black American Youth & Racial Identity Oral Report Summary I decided to do my annotated
bibliography on Black American youth and racial identity. Each one of the articles that I have
chosen addresses one or more of the issues in regards to sociocultural and international contexts that
influence individual differences in the cultural group, how individual differences influence beliefs,
values, and interactions with others and vice versa, as predictions on how interaction among diverse
people can challenge conventional understanding of psychological processes and behavior. Young
Black Americans often battle racial discrimination which can heavily influence how they perceive
themselves as individuals and as members of their own racial ... Show more content on

A positive way young Black Americans gain a solid racial identity is by joining Black organizations
in college like fraternities and sororities with strong African values. This gives them an outlet and
the freedom to express and challenge racial injustices he or she may feel and to further connect with
those that are of similar ethnicity and experiencing similar issues. From reviewing each study, I
would predict that interaction among diverse people can challenge conventional understanding of
psychological processes and behavior because each culture group has different beliefs. I believe that
as more people learn and try to understand and accept that there are differences in how different
people process situations and behave, then we will be able to step outside of our own worldview and
consider it from another's perspective. . Seaton, E. K., Upton, R., Gilbert, A., & Volpe, V. (2014) A
moderated mediation model: Racial discrimination, coping strategies, and racial identity among
black adolescents. Child Development, vol. 85(3), 882–890. The purpose of the current study was to
examine "whether racial discrimination and any of the coping strategies were related to depressive
symptoms" (Seaton, et al., 2014, p. 885) in Black American youth. The authors mention that there

The American Youth Soccer Organization
Many years ago I volunteered with AYSO – American Youth Soccer Organization. During my few
years there as coach, age director and referee I became associated with the Volunteer Protection Act
as well as the Child Protection Act. So when time came for our church in Washington to create a
children's ministry program, I was able to help the church in implementing these Acts into its
policies. We never called the news and spouted off that we were the first to do such as another
church attempted to do, because we did these things to protect the Children and our volunteers. The
other church that had done similar did so just to attract new member into its ranks. Another problem
with today's church is its negligent selection of its staff and volunteers. At the very least the church
should run all prospective workers through the National Sex Offenders Public Website. Yet I feel
that isn't enough either, as the Sex Offenders database only keeps records of sex–related offenses.
Churches should do random background check yearly on all of its volunteers. Yet as most churches
that I have come in contact with would say, "We are low on volunteers and we don't want to scare
prospective volunteers away!" What good is a volunteer if he is a criminal or sex offender? Are we
going to be like the Catholic Church and secretly move our sex offenders around like some kind of
shell game? Find the Church find the offender! When people know that they and their children are
safe then people will come

Latin American Youth Crime
Youth Crime in Latin America
Violence is one of the biggest problems Latin America countries have had during the last years;
however, it has increase in the last years, becoming a common phenomenon that affects the daily
activities of the communities (Moser and Mcilwaine, 2006, p. 90). This problem makes the region
one of the most violent in the world with a rate of twenty murder for every hundred people
(Sanchez, 2006, p. 182), as show in the Figure 1. Latin America is the region with a higher rate of
homicides in the world. Violence have an impact in some youth and adolescents who are susceptible
to become part of the problem. Young people tend to start their participation in criminal activities at
an early state of their lives (Hoffman et ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Changing Face Of Political Campaigns
The media is everywhere. In our computers. In our phones. In our radios. Just around the corner
waiting in a newspaper stand and flashing bright colors across our TVs. It seems like there is
something being reported continuously every day. News and information are only a few taps away;
unlimited knowledge now sits in almost anyone's back pocket. All these new forms of media are
changing everything. Political campaigns are not something we typically think about. To most
people above the age of 18 in the United States, it is now normal to be bombarded by a presidential
candidate 's campaign. On the other hand, this is a newer phenomenon caused by new media. The
changing face of political campaigns has many sides. Public opinion, the youth vote, fundraising,
and negative campaigning are only a few things that are affected by new media.
Public Opinion Public opinion is something that is tricky to define. There are multiple groups within
the public that all have different opinions. This makes it impossible for everyone to have the same
opinion on an issue. Public opinion then becomes the belief of the majority of people in a certain
area. The so–called "public" can only be a town, a city, a state, or even the whole country. This
makes public opinion vary. Though most of the time when it is discussed in campaigns it is the
whole of the nation that is being discussed. Public opinion is influenced by multiple things including
new media. The internet is a growing source for

American Youth In The 1960s
During the 1960s young Americans were beginning to have a voice in society in regards to social,
political and economical issues, this was due to the fact that the American population consisted of
mostly the new generation. This new diverse generation known as the baby boomers were all unified
through their education and their new radical ideals that they learned from the colleges they
attended. This group called The New Left were supporters of equal rights and treatment so few felt
an attraction to the ideals of Karl Marx and Communism, but the majority were more drawn to the
Civil Rights movement. This new idealism that plagued the youth in the 1960s was the cause of
many brutal battles that was fought between them and the police that tried

Std's Affecting American Youth
Knowing hardly anything about public health, I learned a good deal about what it means to work in
this field. What I was especially taken back by was how much STD's affect American youth. I will
be going over how much and at what rate STD's are affecting Americans aged 15–24 and why they
are so prevalent in in the youth and how simple changes can drastically reduce the transmission rate.
Some 110 million Americans have an STD at any given time. With 50 percent of new STD cases
involving persons aged 15–24(CDC), it's clear to see that there is a problem with prevention of these
Infections. With having an STD, it puts people at more risk to get the HIV virus, which is not
curable at this time (STD Facts). Showing that people who haven't contracted an STD are less likely
to preform risky sex behavior. The reason why STD's are so high among the youth is that some of
the tactics don't work as well as we would like. A big contributor is the scare tactic, where a parent
or educator shows you the worst–case scenario of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the best and easiest ways to stay safe from an STD is simply to wear a condom (Sigel), but a
lot of programs worry that it would encourage the youth to have sex (Stienmetz). The current ways
of sex ED don't keep youth from having sex, they are having it at the same rate, it endangers them
because they don't have the knowledge of protection. Teaching safe sex techniques is vital for young
Americans so they can lead a long, healthy life. I learned STD's can be a dangerous infection to have
and the rates aren't going down. With the current teachings of sex ED youth are not equipped as well
as they could be. That said, there are plenty of easy ways that one can prevent these infections, the
best is safe sex knowledge. With knowledge of condoms and various ways of protection the
transmission rate would go down and there would be less infected

The Zoot Suit Riots: The struggle of Mexican American youths
Los Angeles is well known for being the center of fashion, media and entertainment, but also serves
as the home for many diverse populations: one of them being the Mexican Americans. Since their
arrival, the Mexican Americans has been the target of racism from the white men in the United
States. Mexican Repatriation resulted in the voluntary or involuntary migration of Mexicans during
1929–1937, in which 400–500,000 Mexicans left the United States and Mexican Americans were
forced to become "American" through Americanization. These events led to the accumulation of
tension between the two races, which then became apparent in the Sleep Lagoon Murder Trial of
1942 and exploded in the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. The Zoot Suit Riots represented ... Show more

"The Pachuco is a symbol not of the guilt of an oppressed Mexican minority, but of a cancerous
growth within the majority group which is gnawing at the vitals of democracy and American way of

not the products of a humble minority people who are defenseless before their enforced humiliation"
(Daniels 206).
Wearing the zoot suits, the Pachucos represented their resistance against social expectations and
were able to create their own subculture.
The female Mexican American youths, Pachucas or Cholitas, were viewed completely different
from the male Pachucos. The Pachucas were very stylish and with their accessories worn, they were
viewed as auxiliaries within the Mexican American youths (Daniels 202). While the male Pachucos
wearing the zoot suits were viewed as threats to the society, the Pachucas were not viewed as
"enemies within the country."On the evening of June 3, 1943, the tension between the Pachucos and
the white men exploded in what is remembered as the Zoot Suit Riots. Eleven sailors got involved

suit. This incident was publicized and stimulated the resentment within the whites and the other
stationed sailors in Los Angeles. In the following days, the white sailors drove around the city of

with the love of his life he was about to achieve the American dream, getting married and raising a

Student Leaderships in America's History and Government
"We have come to far, we have sacrificed too much, to disdain the future now." John F. Kennedy,
1917–1963. Kennedy looked at the country's future and served with America 's future in mind.
America 's government and history are two things youngsters need to educate themselves about, in
order to go deeper into the truth and lead our country, because history tends to repeat itself,
government officials could be more diverse, and student polls show how little they really know.
History repeats itself because the nature of human beings is making mistakes, but in today's age we
must learn from those past mistakes so they cannot be made again. When history repeats itself, it can

The Progressive Movement In The Progressive Era
A defining feature of the early 20th century in America, and indeed even further before that, there is
a clear and defined feeling of anxiety given to the subject of children/youth being raised correctly,
including the manners in which they would engage in recreation and work. The often labeled
"Progressive Era" is by no means totally indicative of changes, or lack thereof, regarding children
and play during this time, but it certainly illustrates a theme of movement: a powerful, popular
desire for change had engulfed all aspects of family life, shaking what many consider to be classic
"nuclear family" models for childhood to their cores. The issue for children was no longer the
assimilation of delinquents or outsiders, but the rising unrest within the vast ranks of the American
working classes' own homes. Traditionalists and progressives alike fought over how to deal with this
issue, steering the helm of children's work and play in opposite positions, adding to the chaos of that
time. Eventually, what is left is a seemingly contemporary view of children at the home and away
from it. Work and play became polarized, defining the lifestyles of many young Americans within
one realm, to the total exclusion of the other, though this concept did shift slightly to a more widely
accepted belief that time away from work was useful and needed, as was maintaining a personality
and ethic that made work a more bearable environment, or at least more accessible.i There is a

American Youth Culture
The end of the World War II marked the beginning of a new era, not only for America but for the
entire world. In the United States, the end of the war was celebrated and hope for the future began.
America's future looked bright even though there still was uncertainty with the threat of the Soviet
Union. A distinctive youth culture emerged during the postwar era. Also the suburbs were
considered a popular place to live. It was a socially conservative time. Gender roles for men and
women were clearly defined. This era's emphasis was guided upon social conformity and family.
Kelley stated that the most popular comics of the Golden Age were the "teen humor comics, most
notably the Archie comics" (11). After the war superheroes declined, and a comic book seal of
approval was created. This seal made sure that comics were created wholesome, appropriate for the
youth culture and in good moral standing. There was to be no signs of homosexuality, perversion,
sex before marriage or disrespect to authority or the mention of alcohol and drugs. "If Superman's
goal was to defeat the Nazis, then Archie's goal was to ask Betty to the big dance" (Kelley 11). One

Social And Economic Factors Of The American Youth
In the American society, many adolescents are living in the generation where privilege is always
handed to them. However, this need to be privileged has created a negative impact on the American
youth. Many are becoming ignorant toward the ongoing challenges that other adolescents face such
as hunger and poverty. Living in a privileged environment protects these ignorant adolescents from
these prevailing challenges. Nowadays the American youth is more concerned about the social life
of famous people, who serve as the allegorical figures of our age giving the human representation of
what the youth cares about. Therefore, privileges that are afforded to the American youth have
diminished their drive toward assisting deprived individuals, who face prevailing challenges such as
hunger and poverty. Socioeconomics, the study of social and economic factors and how the
combination of both influences something, plays a major role in shaping the American youth. Today,
society as a whole can notice that our younger generation is focused on popular culture, which
defines what one should look like through television, movies, music, etc. The media bombards the
American youth with its' advertising on the popular culture. All these images are engraved in
adolescents' minds, consciously and subconsciously. Based on the statistical data from this impact,
the American youth is regressing concerning the topics of education and common sense when
compared to other countries.

Cause And Effect Essay On Unemployment
Money is an important component that can help ones to function properly in this society. However,
money defines our self–worth and value in this society. For decades, unemployment has become a
big issue in our community. The younger generation are the one who suffers the most from the
crisis. In 2009 alone, 6.7 million youths joined the ranks of the unemployed, and compare this with
an average annual increase of 191,000 in the 10 years before the crisis 1997 to 2007(Elder,2010).
Youth unemployment is a crucial issue in our society. Unfortunately, a lot of young people are going
through that situation. When it comes to find a job, young people are the less fortunate for many
reasons. For instance, some employers might be biased on ages and believes that young people do
not have skills or enough experiences to perform at the level required for the jobs. The problem of
youth unemployment has many causes and consequences in our society. Youth unemployment can
affect the economy, family relationship, increase crime rates and, mental health.
In 1990, Unemployment rate went up to 5.6 percent. According to statisma.com, Unemployment
rate drop 0.7 percent in 2016 due to the effort of President Barack Obama (Statista, 2017).When

Summary: Are American Businesess Targeting American Youth
Are American businesess targeting Americas youth?
It would seem this question has been on the tips of our tongues for some time, and still we've yet to
come to a definitive answer. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to illustrate a portrait of
American advertising and the harmful affects it has on our youth.
Studies have shown that youth specific marketing styles not only could be, but are harmful to
children.
These companies make grandeous impressions of how their product will set the owner apart from
the less–than–fortunate common goer that may not have deep enough pockets to fit in with the rest
of the "Hey, look at me" mindset American businesses are instilling in our youth.
This teaches our children, our future leaders, that quantity trumps quality every time. By
exaggerating the worth of said products, these companies create value, this is then viewed by the
consumer as a "must have" item while simply over lookimg the flaws it may have. In turn, you're
left with a shotty product, and an empty wallet. But hey, at least you look cool, right?
Constantly releasing new products one after the other, bigger and better tech, what does this all
mean? It means that we've successfully created a generation of impulse buyers. Citizens that truly,

The Social Center For Lgbt Youth
The research question that facilitated our asset map was simply "What social outlets are available
for LGBT youth in the greater Los Angeles area?". We chose this question because the majority of
the young people receiving services at our site are homeless, and as everyone knows, homelessness
is a condition that can quickly lead to despair. We firmly believed that locating LGBT–themed
social gatherings, groups, and organizations would be an essential step in pointing these youths
towards systems of support that could help make their difficult circumstances more bearable.
Also, it was vital for us to focus only on social outlets that were LGBT–centric––for these young
people, being marginalized members of an already marginalized community, the homeless––have
distinct needs that other individuals don't. And when these needs aren't met, the consequences can be
tragic. Research shows that approximately 62 percent of homeless LGBT youth attempt suicide
(Center for American Progress, 2010). Before we began our work, officials at our site informed us
that they did not have a list of social outlets for the clients, which made our asset map that much
more important.
We drew the boundaries of the map around the greater Los Angeles area. This decision was made
because many of the clients, being homeless, do not have the means to go far distances. It would
have been useless to include social outlets in San Diego, for instance. As far as our criteria for

A New Year Of Youth Group
To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just
gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with
every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped
me focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youth ministry
efforts. When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the
church and was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my
processor's shadow of high expectations because I feel like I'm not good enough to have New Life
want to pay me. This may sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this
semester. I didn't expect it to be much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing
with New Life for the past two years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all
youth workers expect: being able to grow in my relationships with students in order to help these
teens grow in their relationship with God. If I've learned anything from my experiences, though, I've
learned that you can never really expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I
brought into the practicum was two years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me
the advantage of already being familiar with most of the people I worked with. I was given similar

Model Minority Stereotype: Listening To Asian American...
The concept of "model minority" was defined in 1960s in US. This term intended to describe a
minority group (especially Asian–American) in America which achieves a high degree success. This
success often reflects in good education, good job and high income. Many people are willing to
believe that if they do better job than other, they will no longer suffer from race discrimination. But
is that realistic? The reality is Asian American is still struggling in racism nowadays. In "Unraveling
the 'Model Minority' Stereotype: Listening to Asian American Youth", Stacey Lee revisited the four
identity groups in academic high school and discussed how the "model minority" stereotype

Asian Americans at the school". (Lee, 124) Korean immigrants show stronger ethnic solidarity than
other ethnic groups, they fear to association with other Asian groups, they refuse to mix with other
Asian American ethnic group because they think other Asian groups might threaten their social
position. In Lee's research, Korean–identified students often believe that if achieve "model

is a best way to help them achieve "American dream". Korean–identified students think whites sit at

The Future Of African American Youth
The future of our world lies in the hands of our youth. These children are our future educators,
doctors, lawyers and even the people that might find the cure for cancer. My job as an inspiring
teacher is to educate and provide a role model of excellence but more personally Black excellence.
For years the African American community has been frowned upon and belittle as human beings. It
is time for our race to rise above these perceptions not with words but with actions. So what better
way to start than with our African American youth.
Growing up in a predominantly black school district I have noticed that a lot of students do just
enough to get by. I plan to instill in my students that they should always strive to do their best. I

For many emigrants the New World offered hope of a better life. However, for all new arrivals such
change was traumatic. In the 1600's, many children of poor European immigrants were contracted to
work without wages. They had to work as servants for wealthier people until they were between 18
and 21 years of age.
At the beginning of 1619, blacks were brought to North America as salves to work for the new
European settlers. Young people as well as adults served as slaves until 1865 when the slavery was
abolished.
Later the United States expierenced major periods of immigration. The first occurred from 1840 to
1880. During that time, most of the immigrants were from northern and western Europe. Most of
them were emigrating because of poverty or political or religious persecution. The second major
period of immigration began in 1880's. the majority of immigrants now came from southern and
eastern Europe.
At the time of these major periods of immigration, children of all ethnic groups often worked long
hours in factories, coal mines, mills or on farms. There were no laws regulating child labor until
1900's.
However, many new Americans saw that education was their best chance for prosperity. In the
1900's, boys and girls began to attend schools I increasing numbers. Many stayed at

More Signs That American Youth Are The Lost Generation...
Writer, Adam Clark Estes, in his article, "More Signs That American Youth Are a Lost Generation,"
describes how America's youth are the lost generation. Estes purpose is to point out that America's
youth are the lost generation. He adopts an opinionated tone in order to help describe how America's
youth are the lost generation in his readers.
Estes opens his article by comparing the youth of America to the youth of Japan. A "new census data
released Thursday casts a shadow over the long–term impact of the recession on America's youth."
The census data show America that the youth had no jobs and there was a lot of youth that had no

"Across Japan, more than one million men and boys like Jun and Hiro and Kenji have chosen to
withdraw completely from society. These recluses hide in their homes for months or years at a

have contact with the outside world. "the new census data reads like a warning sign that American
youth are increasingly challenged by listlessness, and it will likely lead to future consequences,"
because the American youth are not having jobs and just sitting around all day, their brains are not
requiring the information that they need for a job, so they start to lose all common sense. "Many
young adults are essentially postponing adulthood and all of the family responsibilities and extra
costs that go along with it" the youth are living with their parents till they are in their thirties and
then they get kicked out, because they need to find a job and start their own life. In America and

Rap Music And Its Influence On African American Youth
Music and society have always been closely related. For years now music has been apart of people's
everyday lives all around the world. Having so many different genres out there, it makes it easy to
be appealing to so many different ethnic backgrounds. However, one type of genre in particular has
seemed to grab the attention of a younger generation. Rap music has undoubtedly had its utmost
impact on African American youth, since many of the performers themselves are African American.
An overtly masculine culture dominates rap music and creates gender stereotypes that become
abundantly popular to the youthful audience. Three constant themes that are found within the rap
culture are encouragement of violence, the misogynistic representation of women, an extreme hatred
of homophobia. Each theme plays a detrimental role in the process of defining black masculinity as
well as shaping the values, morals, and beliefs that its younger audience adopts after tuning into this
"gangster lifestyle". Violence is something that has always been associated with masculinity,
particularly in the traditional patriarchal society. The strong expectations that are tied to masculinity
frequently compel men to display certain attitudes and characteristics such as aggressiveness, power,
and even vicious superiority over other men. Given the repression of African Americans, a
significant amount of adolescent black men are suffering from a severe self–hatred and a frantic,
consequential want to

Essay on The Role of Youth in Politics
Cavins 1
Throughout the history of America young people have always played a crucial role in politics. The
famous writer Srirangam Srinivas wrote, "Our country is not in the hands of lazy and corrupted old
politicians, this country is ours i.e. youth". Young people between the ages 18 to 25 are the future of
this country and its political system. The young people of America have a responsibility to be
involved with politics and with their civic duties. The youth in America must be involved in politics
to ensure that America stays a country of freedom, and to combat the corruption in politics, they
must also be involved with their civic duties in order to give back to their country and to leave a
legacy of political and civic participation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the founding fathers drafted the Constitution their main focus was creating a nation where
everyone would be free from the restraints of a controlling government and treated equal. America
has always been a nation of freedom, and needs to remain that way. The youth in this country is
charged with the task of ensuring that America remains the "land of the free". Without involvement
in politics this is not possible. If youth are to maintain the American ideals of freedom and equality
it is imperative that they be involved in politics. Voting every four years for the president, who is
more of a figure head than anything else, is simply not enough. Young people need to take a more
active role in politics such as running for a political office, local or national. This is the only way
they will be able to put their beliefs into action and ensure that America upholds it's long standing
values of freedom and equality. The youth need to start taking action as soon as they are old enough.
However, young people need to be educated on politics and be firm in their beliefs before delving
into the world of politics. In recent years the youth have shown a trend of disengagement and apathy
toward political involvement. According to "The Good Citizen", a book written by Russell J. Dalton,
political analysts and politicians agree that the youth are losing interest in politics and

First, I would implement trauma and diversity trainings for all educators and staff members in
schools that focus on how trauma experiences can impact an individual's emotional and behavioral
development and their ability to succeed academically and in other settings. The diversity portion of
this training would focus on the cultural differences that are experienced by individuals of different
races and ethnicities because it is important to be culturally sensitive, especially when teaching
young minority individuals. Secondly, my practicum placement is in OKC public schools and the
school social workers in the district serve very high–need populations and many individuals have a
negative connotation of the students who attend these schools. I will work to change the negative
dialogue that surrounds these schools to a positive one, so that the individuals who are guiding these
children through the school system will not continue to lower their expectations of these students
and negatively impact their educational experience. I will do this by only focusing on the student's
strengths when conversing with teachers and principals. Thirdly, I would advocate for schools to

students create positive ethnic identities, which has been linked to positive outcomes for

Effects Of Advertisements On American Youth
The Effects of Advertisements on American Youth
Today, we live in a society that is ruled by multiple forms of media, and where there is media there
are advertisements. According to the market research company Yankelovich, the average person is
exposed to about 5,000 advertisements and brands per day (Walker–Smith, 2014). The exposure to
such advertisements have caused a detrimental effect on young people, such as the influence of what
the perfect body looks like. Today commercials showcase unrealistic versions of the average male
and female, causing an increase in eating disorders each year. Advertisements also influence young
people by convincing them that it is okay to drink and that there will be no consequences.
Advertisements do not show the long term effects that can happen to an individual when they start
abusing alcohol; such as the need for blood transfusions or having seizures. They only show the
scene where people seem to be having more fun with an alcoholic beverage in their hand.
Advertisements also play a role in the food choices young people make. Most food advertisements
appear on children and teen oriented shows; and the advertisements they show are unhealthy for
young people to consume. Those advertisements are a contributing factor to childhood obesity that
may later become adulthood obesity. Which goes to show the enormous impact advertisements play
in the way society views beauty, alcohol, and food choices; creating detrimental effects on young
people's

Gingsberg Believes America's Youth Must Live up to...
Young nonconformists reveal how one particular mode of idealizing youth is an American
convention that hinders the progress of past and present generations. The speaker proposes an
alternative way to idealize youth because young Americans can disrupt expectations and enforce
change. Celebrating young Americans who do not live up to America's expectations allows Ginsberg
to celebrate the majority of young people. Realizing the harmful effects that stem from idealizing
youth forces the speaker to look to the past. Ben Lee suggests:
Ginsberg's use of anaphora forces us to question the historical origins of both social afflictions and
collective resistance in Howl, this blurring of the poet's central objects of identification implies that
his lamentation for the madness of his own generation is also a lamentation for the blighted hopes
and wasted intellects of their precursors (384).
Lee notices that Ginsberg's use of anaphora questions "the historical origins of both social afflictions
and collective resistance in Howl." The "origins of both social afflictions" and "collective
resistance" stems from America's need to impose unrealistic expectations on young people. Ginsberg
idealizes America's youth by celebrating their imperfection. Ginsberg "blurs" his "central objects of
identification" by finding a connection between the insanity that Carl Solomon and Naomi Ginsberg
share. The "blighted hopes and wasted intellects" of America's past and present generation are

The Stereotypes Associated With East Asian American Youths
The stereotypes associated with East Asian American youths generally include proficiency in
mathematics, piano lessons, or lack of social skills. However, the reality of East Asian American
youths differs depending on experience and cultural upbringing. The large influx of East Asians
emigrating from their land of birth to countries such as the United States, Canada, and France (to
mention a few) have changed the facet of society in terms of multiculturalism and diversity. From
result of immigration, East Asian immigrants have escaped from their countries due to political

In North America, cultural upbringing and parental expectations have affected the psychosocial
well–being of East Asian–American youths in terms of emotional and social facets. In examining
the role of family in the East Asian American context, the detachment of warmth experienced by
East Asian American youth have been associated with poor development of social relationships.
From the perspective of East Asian American immigrant parents, the sacrifices that were made in
emigrating from their countries of origin have led them to endure hardships of their own. In terms of
sacrifices, many had to leave families behind in order to ensure a better quality of life, or escape
political unrest. The burdens felt could then harden the individual to shield their vulnerability in
order to exude the sensorial feeling of strength (Pyke, 242). Through the perspective of the East
Asian American youth, the sense of building a familial community and maintaining a cohesive
relationship with parents is crucial to development. However, the concept of familial cohesiveness is
interpreted differently from both the parental and child's perspective. The East Asian American
youth's understanding of familial ties and parental affections have stemmed from their exposure to

It would be hard for one to dispute the fact that MTV has influenced every pop culture trend since
its birth in 1981. One could even say that MTV is pop culture. No other media network holds in the
palm of its hand the power to control popular cultural evolution the way MTV does. What other
media network has influenced and help shape public opinion, filmmaking, newsgathering
techniques, presidential politics, and world politics like MTV has? In addition to that, MTV can take
credit for reconstructing the music industry (Rushkoss 126). One would be hard pressed to find a

A young male may think that the more half–naked women he has following him around, the more
successful he is. This is a bit extreme, but extreme sells. However, the underlying theme is the point
here. That theme being that MTV at any given point is trying to sell an image that appeal to its
designated viewers. In conclusion, MTV has signified change in the pop culture around us, because
it has helped shape the world around us. MTV has drastically changed youth culture around the
world, defining popular culture and speaking on behalf of young adults everywhere. MTV has
transported its powerful advertising to millions of youths and is often criticized for promoting
American culture to the rest of the world. Many intellectuals slam the network for destroying
traditions and imposing American values and beliefs thereby forcing a homogenization of world
youth culture (Williams 200–215). However, even with all of this critical disapproval, MTV
continues to expand globally.

Study on African American Youth and Young Adults with...
This paper proposes to address the psychological needs, behavioral factors, social factors
surrounding a stratified sample of African American youth and young adults with incarcerated
fathers. In doing so, assessment measures possessing test–retest reliability to assess subjects' mental
health conditions, stress related behavior, socioeconomic status, and interpersonal relationships.
Incarcerated fathers who are imprisoned for non–violent crimes and are opened to reconcile and/or

geared toward keeping imprisoned fathers in the Federal Bureau of Prisons and have had some
communication with their children via pre–paid phone calls and Corrlinks (an electronic mail
system in the FBOP prisoners and their families). Mothers or caretakers will be encouraged to
participate in the proposed intervention programs.
Introduction
Studies have shown that children of incarcerated mothers experience more mental health issues as
well as disruptions in their life because, more than likely, the mother was the primary caregiver prior
to incarceration. Therefore, more programs for reuniting children with their mothers have been
implemented yet the long–time/short–term effects of such programs remain unclear. Additionally,
given the effects of maternal incarceration tend to cause more disruption of the lives of youths, an

Desensitization Of American Youth Essay
Television has increasingly become the quintessential epicenter of communication, since its
invention, in 1927. At any moment in time 2.5 billion people are viewing some form of television
broadcast (Ballard). Modern society has introduced various categories of television. These variations
range from educational to violent. This broad spectrum makes it hard to generalize the effects it has
had on American youth; however, television seems to have increased moral and intellectual
degradation. Through violent shows and monotonous news broadcasts, American youths have
become desensitized to the poverties, and hardships of the world. This desensitization has had
several, and moreover negative, moral impacts on the youths of America. Nevertheless, ... Show

Each day children are exposed to violent television programs, whether through the news, or through
entertainment. Each time a child casually watches a violent program they are further disposed to the
concept that that violence is simply a part of a just and moral code. Such values insinuate that
following one's passion over reason holds moral ground. Each day on the news youth watch
broadcastings, detailing global hardships, and poverties that different regions are facing. An
overload of negative news makes these hardships seem like they simply coincide with everyday life,
which compromises true good. This desensitization creates a bystander effect, in which people
believe that other people will reach out and help; therefore, they do not need to. Currently millions
of war refugees are fleeing Syria to prevent being killed. European countries are shutting their
borders to these people, forcing them to be slaughtered, with no means of survival. Every news
outlet has covered this story, yet no one has reached out to help. This issue has taken a back seat,
because people have deemed these acts to be part of the injustices of life. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

American Youth in the 1960s
America has in a short time been established as a nation that symbolizes acceptance and change. It
has progressed into a country of equality that finds its foundation in its personal freedoms and the
progressive movement of technology, politics, economics, social views, ethics and so forth since the
American Revolution. It has been changing rapidly since the influx of immigrants that came here
before the Revolution. The 1950s were a happy time. I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver were on
television. The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley were popular acts
in music. The youth movement of the 1960s was necessary in order for America to progress in
social, political, economic, and technological ways that could further America from the 1950s into a
new era of personal identity and freedom of expression. It was a time of fathers going to work,
mothers staying home and tending to the housework, and kids hanging out in the suburban
neighborhoods. The 1950s were the end of World War II which brought back many young
serviceman to the states to start families and get jobs. This inflow of young and eager men put a lot
of money into industry and goods not available during the war. This created a boom in the economy.
Suburbs started to pop up everywhere because all these young men and their families needed
housing. Levitt Co. was the reason for this. They built preplanned communities that contained cheap
and affordable houses. Most looked exactly the same

Essay on Adolescent Violence
Abstract
"There is no doubt that violence, especially among youth, is a problem in the U.S. today. Since
1993, the U.S. has had the highest rate of childhood homicide, suicide, and firearms related deaths
of any of the world's 26 wealthiest nations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1993),"
stated the authors of the article. Due to results as stated above by the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, the questions "what factors cause violent fighting as well as weapon carrying" and
"what are assets that may help prevent such violence" come into mind. The article, Adolescent

One example briefly stated in this article was of the Colombine High School shooting in Littleton,
Colorado on April 20, 1999 in which two students who attending Colombine High opened fire in the
school, and shot and killed twelve students and one teacher, leaving 28 students injured before
killing themselves. These two students, Eric and Dylan, both were in a clique called the "Trenchcoat
mafia." The Trenchcoat mafia was a group of outcasts who would wear long black coats everyday,
always bragged about owning guns, and disliked people of a certain color or race. The reason that
these two students opened fire was because they didn't like being judged or teased by other people
because of what they wore and whom they hung out with. The authors stated, "Previous studies have
also found that participation in one risk behavior puts youth at peril for participation in other risk
behaviors (Flisher & Kramer, 2000) and that carrying a weapon was predictive of involvement in
violence." The Colombine shooting

Positive Youth Development Programs
A positive youth development program is designed to help young adults overcome their challenges
and live up to their full potential. Youth development is emphasized through different activities
which helps the youth emotionally, physically, and socially. Youth development programs are
basically used to help them regain confidence, and how to bounce back to a normal life. My
program name is Helping Hands, which will be based on abused youth in African American public
schools. The motto for my program is "Not all hands are helpful, but our hands are guaranteed life
changers." When organizing a program knowing the population, how it works, and its essentials are
mandatory for a successful youth development program. The name of my youth development
program is called Helping Hands. This program will focus on abused youth in African American
public schools, grades 9th– 12th. This program will focus on these grades because a lot of the youth
feel like they can deal with things like this on their own. If needed, we also help any other youth
who aren't it in grades 9–12. The phrase "No child is left behind" not only counts for educational
purposes but also for my program, we're here to help anyone. This program will start nationally then

Alcoholism: Native American Youth Alcoholism is a prevalent social epidemic for Native
Americans, especially among youth between the ages of 13 to 18 that reside on the reservations.
Alcoholism and chronic substance abuse among Native America youth is increasing at a rapid rate
in the past few years. Alcoholism is risk of substance abuse or dependence is consistently elevated
in adolescents who had been victims of assault or who had witnessed violence (Kilpatrick, Acierno,
Saunders, Resnick, Best, & Schnurr, 2000). Inherent risks associated with substance abuse range
from minor poor judgement errors to life–threating events, for example dose overdose or acute drug
hypersensitivity (Beauvais, 1992). Studies have not yet found a clear biological mechanism that
would explain alcoholism and excessive drinking, but a number of them have suggested a possibility
of some kind of predisposition to the condition (Clinard & Meier, 2015). This paper presents an
analysis of family structure, alcoholism diagnosis criteria, and psychological effects associated with
chronic alcohol abuse among Native American youth.

Ethnicity and the Juvenile Justice System
Often times, people in America understand that minority youths are excessively represented in the
justice system. Unfortunately, this occurs at every level of the justice system. Not only does it occur
in from initial contact with the police, it continues through incarceration. In many cases, young
juvenile minority are being discriminated, they come from corrupted developing countries with high
levels of crime, and the majority of white youths are from wealthy families.
Most young juveniles are constantly being discriminated due to their ethnic background. The 14th
Amendment to the United States Constitution has been construed to translate that discrimination
based on traits such as race are a violation of due process (cite). According to
www.futurechildren.org, "the NCCD finds that black youth are more likely than white youth to be
formally charged and sentenced to out–of–home placement for the same offense"
(futurechildren.org). 50 percent of drug cases involve white youth results in formal processing.
More than 75 percent of drugs cases involve many African American youth result in formal
processing. Many of the studies show that black youth are given more restrictive dispositions than
white youth, even when they have committed the same offence and have the same prior record

African American Youth And The Criminal Justice System

  • 1. African American Youth And The Criminal Justice System Henry Louis Gates once said, "I believe in the law. I think we have a great system of justice. But I do think that system of justice has been corrupted by racism and classism. I think it's difficult for 'poor people' – poor white people, brown people – to be treated fairly before the law in the same way that upper–class people are." The racial justice issue that interests me the most is the targeting of African American youth by the police in the schools and on the streets . Nationwide, more African American males are at the highest risk of being arrested at school. In fact, black boys are three times more likely to be arrested at school than their white classmates. It is sad that black youth are subjected to the legal system at such a young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Impact On The American Youth During The Jim Crow Era Section 2: Investigation In America there has always been two debating sides when it comes to the subject of races, the fight between racist Americans and oppressed people of color ,have made a mark in American history through the Jim Crow era."Jim Crow," or "Jump Jim Crow," was the name of a minstrel practice performed in 1828 by its author, Thomas Dartmouth ("Daddy") Rice, and by many imitators. The term came to be a derogatory epithet for blacks and a designation of their segregated life. During the Reconstruction era, "carpetbaggers" from the north moved to the South and formed a coalition with freedmen (freed slaves) and whites who supported Reconstruction. Together they politically controlled former Confederate states for varying periods. From the late 1870s, and the end of Reconstruction, Southern state legislatures, no longer controlled by "carpetbaggers" and freedmen, passed laws requiring separation of whites from "persons of color." These laws were called Jim Crow, which became a derogatory epithet for blacks and a designation of their segregated life. Anyone of color, or of probable or strongly suspected black ancestry in any degree, was a "person of color."('Jim Crow Laws' Were Meant to Enslave) The effect on the youth during the Jim crow era was seen as early as the separation of ethnicity in schools. The schools for white children and the schools for negro children shall be conducted separately. • 9. Mexicans And Mexican American Youth Throughout our history as a nation, we have earned a reputation of undermining the relationships we have had with minorities and of largely neglecting their needs. Our almost hostile nature towards minorities in the United States can largely be seen in the treatment of Mexicans and Mexican American citizens in the times surrounding World War Two. Such hostilities are reflected in our treatment of Mexican Americans in the late 19th after the Civil War and early 20th centuries, the Sleepy Lagoon murder responses, and the Zoot Suit riots. My primary source reveals a feeling of inferiority in the United States by the Mexican American youth due discrimination that they faced, which can be better understood by analyzing the cultural contexts. As railroads expanded during the United States western expansionist period in the late 19th century, Mexican immigration along with Eastern migration grew in the west. Once the Mexican immigrants arrived, they largely occupied commercial agriculture in large farms, mining industries, and the construction of railroads, but were generally paid very little. During this time, as Arizona State History Professor Manuel P. Servín explained, the Mexican Americans that had been here for years had already begun to feel despised by the Western Expansionists, and were looked at as less American and an unassimilable foreigner. The lower class Mexican immigrants and citizens largely assimilated on rail road cities, or Sonora towns, such as Los Angeles, El ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. What Led to the Collapse of Consensus? WHAT LED TO THE COLLAPSE OF CONSENSUS? The 1950's and early 1960's was a time of consensus in the US. By the middle of the 60's the US experienced a series of shocks which undermined consensus. The assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. The differences in the civil rights movement. The escalation of the Vietnam War. All of these factors undermined American confidence to change the world and improve the country. By the late 60's, US society was polarised: divided between different viewpoints: Youth culture; counter–culture, and multiculturism. The youth culture was created due to a baby boom in the 50's and 60's as this led to a large youth population. Most children stayed in school and university for longer. Most had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was an increase in drunkenness and fighting. Movies were blamed, such as: Rebel without a Cause which starred James Dean. The Blackboard jungle featured rebellious students. Some blamed Rock 'n' Roll music. There was a fear of open revolt against society: "The gangster of tomorrow is the Elvis Presley of today". These young people were actively working to bring down the consensus which had dominated the US for the past decade. This led to a sexual revolution. The was because of the greater freedom of the pill. The women;s movement and Supreme Court decision to make explicit books more availible. Movies also became more explicit. By the 1970's the spreqda of benereal diseases and AIDs caused many young people to avoid casual relations. By the 80's there an emphasis on virginity and celibacy. The dominant trends of independence, freedom, the consumer markey and wealth in youth culture remained. Pop music, fashion, smoking and drugs continued to be the expressions of youth cutlure. By now, the collaps of consensus was in full swing; the next development would be that of a counter–culture. Counter culture was the desire for an alternative. It grew because of the influence of the civlil right's movement; the growing of the anti–war movement; the acceptance that everyone had rights. The increase on the university population from 16 million in 1960 to 25 million in 1970 helped also. Drugs had a dramatic effect. Perhaps the greatest pastor of counter–culture ... • 17. Freedom Of African American Youth Is general, is it necessary for our youth to be profiled and questioned for everything that we do? When Martin Luther King, and all the other great civil rights leaders that were taught to them in schools about walking for our justice and freedom, it seems like the freedom they were discussing and wanting for their people is the freedom that white American gave to black youth by mistake. When you look at how our African American youth are treated in wherever they go, it prompts the question, are they really free? Can our youth actually go apply for jobs like their white counterparts and actually be looked at for their skills not for the color of their skin. Can our youth actually go to the grocery store and actually be free to walk around without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Black American Youth And Racial Identity Black American Youth & Racial Identity Oral Report Summary I decided to do my annotated bibliography on Black American youth and racial identity. Each one of the articles that I have chosen addresses one or more of the issues in regards to sociocultural and international contexts that influence individual differences in the cultural group, how individual differences influence beliefs, values, and interactions with others and vice versa, as predictions on how interaction among diverse people can challenge conventional understanding of psychological processes and behavior. Young Black Americans often battle racial discrimination which can heavily influence how they perceive themselves as individuals and as members of their own racial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A positive way young Black Americans gain a solid racial identity is by joining Black organizations in college like fraternities and sororities with strong African values. This gives them an outlet and the freedom to express and challenge racial injustices he or she may feel and to further connect with those that are of similar ethnicity and experiencing similar issues. From reviewing each study, I would predict that interaction among diverse people can challenge conventional understanding of psychological processes and behavior because each culture group has different beliefs. I believe that as more people learn and try to understand and accept that there are differences in how different people process situations and behave, then we will be able to step outside of our own worldview and consider it from another's perspective. . Child Development, vol. 85(3), 882–890. The purpose of the current study was to examine "whether racial discrimination and any of the coping strategies were related to depressive symptoms" (Seaton, et al., 2014, p. 885) in Black American youth. The authors mention that there have been studies which indicate "perceptions of racial discrimination have been linked to lower life satisfaction levels, decreased ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The American Youth Soccer Organization Many years ago I volunteered with AYSO – American Youth Soccer Organization. During my few years there as coach, age director and referee I became associated with the Volunteer Protection Act as well as the Child Protection Act. So when time came for our church in Washington to create a children's ministry program, I was able to help the church in implementing these Acts into its policies. We never called the news and spouted off that we were the first to do such as another church attempted to do, because we did these things to protect the Children and our volunteers. The other church that had done similar did so just to attract new member into its ranks. Another problem with today's church is its negligent selection of its staff and volunteers. At the very least the church should run all prospective workers through the National Sex Offenders Public Website. Yet I feel that isn't enough either, as the Sex Offenders database only keeps records of sex–related offenses. Churches should do random background check yearly on all of its volunteers. Yet as most churches that I have come in contact with would say, "We are low on volunteers and we don't want to scare prospective volunteers away!" What good is a volunteer if he is a criminal or sex offender? Are we going to be like the Catholic Church and secretly move our sex offenders around like some kind of shell game? Find the Church find the offender! When people know that they and their children are safe then people will come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Latin American Youth Crime Youth Crime in Latin America Violence is one of the biggest problems Latin America countries have had during the last years; however, it has increase in the last years, becoming a common phenomenon that affects the daily activities of the communities (Moser and Mcilwaine, 2006, p. 90). This problem makes the region one of the most violent in the world with a rate of twenty murder for every hundred people (Sanchez, 2006, p. 182), as show in the Figure 1. • 33. The Changing Face Of Political Campaigns The media is everywhere. In our computers. In our phones. In our radios. Just around the corner waiting in a newspaper stand and flashing bright colors across our TVs. It seems like there is something being reported continuously every day. News and information are only a few taps away; unlimited knowledge now sits in almost anyone's back pocket. All these new forms of media are changing everything. Political campaigns are not something we typically think about. To most people above the age of 18 in the United States, it is now normal to be bombarded by a presidential candidate 's campaign. On the other hand, this is a newer phenomenon caused by new media. The changing face of political campaigns has many sides. Public opinion, the youth vote, fundraising, and negative campaigning are only a few things that are affected by new media. Public Opinion Public opinion is something that is tricky to define. There are multiple groups within the public that all have different opinions. This makes it impossible for everyone to have the same opinion on an issue. Public opinion then becomes the belief of the majority of people in a certain area. The so–called "public" can only be a town, a city, a state, or even the whole country. This makes public opinion vary. Though most of the time when it is discussed in campaigns it is the whole of the nation that is being discussed. Public opinion is influenced by multiple things including new media. The internet is a growing source for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

American Youth In The 1960s During the 1960s young Americans were beginning to have a voice in society in regards to social, political and economical issues, this was due to the fact that the American population consisted of mostly the new generation. This new diverse generation known as the baby boomers were all unified through their education and their new radical ideals that they learned from the colleges they attended. This group called The New Left were supporters of equal rights and treatment so few felt an attraction to the ideals of Karl Marx and Communism, but the majority were more drawn to the Civil Rights movement. • 41. Std's Affecting American Youth Knowing hardly anything about public health, I learned a good deal about what it means to work in this field. What I was especially taken back by was how much STD's affect American youth. I will be going over how much and at what rate STD's are affecting Americans aged 15–24 and why they are so prevalent in in the youth and how simple changes can drastically reduce the transmission rate. Some 110 million Americans have an STD at any given time. With 50 percent of new STD cases involving persons aged 15–24(CDC), it's clear to see that there is a problem with prevention of these Infections. With having an STD, it puts people at more risk to get the HIV virus, which is not curable at this time (STD Facts). Showing that people who haven't contracted an STD are less likely to preform risky sex behavior. The reason why STD's are so high among the youth is that some of the tactics don't work as well as we would like. A big contributor is the scare tactic, where a parent or educator shows you the worst–case scenario of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the best and easiest ways to stay safe from an STD is simply to wear a condom (Sigel), but a lot of programs worry that it would encourage the youth to have sex (Stienmetz). The current ways of sex ED don't keep youth from having sex, they are having it at the same rate, it endangers them because they don't have the knowledge of protection. Teaching safe sex techniques is vital for young Americans so they can lead a long, healthy life. I learned STD's can be a dangerous infection to have and the rates aren't going down. With the current teachings of sex ED youth are not equipped as well as they could be. That said, there are plenty of easy ways that one can prevent these infections, the best is safe sex knowledge. The Zoot Suit Riots: The struggle of Mexican American youths Los Angeles is well known for being the center of fashion, media and entertainment, but also serves as the home for many diverse populations: one of them being the Mexican Americans. Since their arrival, the Mexican Americans has been the target of racism from the white men in the United States. Mexican Repatriation resulted in the voluntary or involuntary migration of Mexicans during 1929–1937, in which 400–500,000 Mexicans left the United States and Mexican Americans were forced to become "American" through Americanization. These events led to the accumulation of tension between the two races, which then became apparent in the Sleep Lagoon Murder Trial of 1942 and exploded in the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. The Zoot Suit Riots represented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The Pachuco is a symbol not of the guilt of an oppressed Mexican minority, but of a cancerous growth within the majority group which is gnawing at the vitals of democracy and American way of life. Wearing the zoot suits, the Pachucos represented their resistance against social expectations and were able to create their own subculture. The female Mexican American youths, Pachucas or Cholitas, were viewed completely different from the male Pachucos. The Pachucas were very stylish and with their accessories worn, they were viewed as auxiliaries within the Mexican American youths (Daniels 202). While the male Pachucos wearing the zoot suits were viewed as threats to the society, the Pachucas were not viewed as "enemies within the country."On the evening of June 3, 1943, the tension between the Pachucos and the white men exploded in what is remembered as the Zoot Suit Riots. Eleven sailors got involved into a fight with youths that were thought to be Mexican Americans, since they were wearing a zoot suit. This incident was publicized and stimulated the resentment within the whites and the other stationed sailors in Los Angeles. In this hot pot of diversity, all of the ingredients (ethnicities) will not always conform to one and other; this could possibly lead to discrimination. This paper will be primarily focus on the discrimination towards Asian American youth of the 21st century and how it affects their academics. • 57. The Progressive Movement In The Progressive Era A defining feature of the early 20th century in America, and indeed even further before that, there is a clear and defined feeling of anxiety given to the subject of children/youth being raised correctly, including the manners in which they would engage in recreation and work. The often labeled "Progressive Era" is by no means totally indicative of changes, or lack thereof, regarding children and play during this time, but it certainly illustrates a theme of movement: a powerful, popular desire for change had engulfed all aspects of family life, shaking what many consider to be classic "nuclear family" models for childhood to their cores. The issue for children was no longer the assimilation of delinquents or outsiders, but the rising unrest within the vast ranks of the American working classes' own homes. Traditionalists and progressives alike fought over how to deal with this issue, steering the helm of children's work and play in opposite positions, adding to the chaos of that time. Eventually, what is left is a seemingly contemporary view of children at the home and away from it. Work and play became polarized, defining the lifestyles of many young Americans within one realm, to the total exclusion of the other, though this concept did shift slightly to a more widely accepted belief that time away from work was useful and needed, as was maintaining a personality and ethic that made work a more bearable environment, or at least more accessible.i There is a ... • 61. American Youth Culture The end of the World War II marked the beginning of a new era, not only for America but for the entire world. In the United States, the end of the war was celebrated and hope for the future began. America's future looked bright even though there still was uncertainty with the threat of the Soviet Union. A distinctive youth culture emerged during the postwar era. Also the suburbs were considered a popular place to live. It was a socially conservative time. Gender roles for men and women were clearly defined. This era's emphasis was guided upon social conformity and family. Kelley stated that the most popular comics of the Golden Age were the "teen humor comics, most notably the Archie comics" (11). After the war superheroes declined, and a comic book seal of approval was created. This seal made sure that comics were created wholesome, appropriate for the youth culture and in good moral standing. There was to be no signs of homosexuality, perversion, sex before marriage or disrespect to authority or the mention of alcohol and drugs. "If Superman's goal was to defeat the Nazis, then Archie's goal was to ask Betty to the big dance" (Kelley 11). • 65. Social And Economic Factors Of The American Youth In the American society, many adolescents are living in the generation where privilege is always handed to them. However, this need to be privileged has created a negative impact on the American youth. Many are becoming ignorant toward the ongoing challenges that other adolescents face such as hunger and poverty. Living in a privileged environment protects these ignorant adolescents from these prevailing challenges. Nowadays the American youth is more concerned about the social life of famous people, who serve as the allegorical figures of our age giving the human representation of what the youth cares about. Therefore, privileges that are afforded to the American youth have diminished their drive toward assisting deprived individuals, who face prevailing challenges such as hunger and poverty. Socioeconomics, the study of social and economic factors and how the combination of both influences something, plays a major role in shaping the American youth. Today, society as a whole can notice that our younger generation is focused on popular culture, which defines what one should look like through television, movies, music, etc. The media bombards the American youth with its' advertising on the popular culture. All these images are engraved in adolescents' minds, consciously and subconsciously. • 69. Cause And Effect Essay On Unemployment Money is an important component that can help ones to function properly in this society. However, money defines our self–worth and value in this society. For decades, unemployment has become a big issue in our community. The younger generation are the one who suffers the most from the crisis. In 2009 alone, 6.7 million youths joined the ranks of the unemployed, and compare this with an average annual increase of 191,000 in the 10 years before the crisis 1997 to 2007(Elder,2010). Youth unemployment is a crucial issue in our society. Unfortunately, a lot of young people are going through that situation. When it comes to find a job, young people are the less fortunate for many reasons. For instance, some employers might be biased on ages and believes that young people do not have skills or enough experiences to perform at the level required for the jobs. The problem of youth unemployment has many causes and consequences in our society. Youth unemployment can affect the economy, family relationship, increase crime rates and, mental health. In 1990, Unemployment rate went up to 5.6 percent. • 73. Summary: Are American Businesess Targeting American Youth Are American businesess targeting Americas youth? It would seem this question has been on the tips of our tongues for some time, and still we've yet to come to a definitive answer. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to illustrate a portrait of American advertising and the harmful affects it has on our youth. Studies have shown that youth specific marketing styles not only could be, but are harmful to children. These companies make grandeous impressions of how their product will set the owner apart from the less–than–fortunate common goer that may not have deep enough pockets to fit in with the rest of the "Hey, look at me" mindset American businesses are instilling in our youth. This teaches our children, our future leaders, that quantity trumps quality every time. By exaggerating the worth of said products, these companies create value, this is then viewed by the consumer as a "must have" item while simply over lookimg the flaws it may have. In turn, you're left with a shotty product, and an empty wallet. But hey, at least you look cool, right? Constantly releasing new products one after the other, bigger and better tech, what does this all mean? It means that we've successfully created a generation of impulse buyers. • 77. The Social Center For Lgbt Youth The research question that facilitated our asset map was simply "What social outlets are available for LGBT youth in the greater Los Angeles area?". We chose this question because the majority of the young people receiving services at our site are homeless, and as everyone knows, homelessness is a condition that can quickly lead to despair. We firmly believed that locating LGBT–themed social gatherings, groups, and organizations would be an essential step in pointing these youths towards systems of support that could help make their difficult circumstances more bearable. Also, it was vital for us to focus only on social outlets that were LGBT–centric––for these young people, being marginalized members of an already marginalized community, the homeless––have distinct needs that other individuals don't. And when these needs aren't met, the consequences can be tragic. Research shows that approximately 62 percent of homeless LGBT youth attempt suicide (Center for American Progress, 2010). Before we began our work, officials at our site informed us that they did not have a list of social outlets for the clients, which made our asset map that much more important. We drew the boundaries of the map around the greater Los Angeles area. This decision was made because many of the clients, being homeless, do not have the means to go far distances. It would have been useless to include social outlets in San Diego, for instance. As far as our criteria for choosing assets, we included ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 81. A New Year Of Youth Group To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped me focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youth ministry efforts. When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the church and was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my processor's shadow of high expectations because I feel like I'm not good enough to have New Life want to pay me. This may sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this semester. I didn't expect it to be much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing with New Life for the past two years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all youth workers expect: being able to grow in my relationships with students in order to help these teens grow in their relationship with God. If I've learned anything from my experiences, though, I've learned that you can never really expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I brought into the practicum was two years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me the advantage of already being familiar with most of the people I worked with. In the 1600's, many children of poor European immigrants were contracted to work without wages. They had to work as servants for wealthier people until they were between 18 and 21 years of age. At the beginning of 1619, blacks were brought to North America as salves to work for the new European settlers. Young people as well as adults served as slaves until 1865 when the slavery was abolished. Later the United States expierenced major periods of immigration. The first occurred from 1840 to 1880. During that time, most of the immigrants were from northern and western Europe. Most of them were emigrating because of poverty or political or religious persecution. The second major period of immigration began in 1880's. the majority of immigrants now came from southern and eastern Europe. At the time of these major periods of immigration, children of all ethnic groups often worked long hours in factories, coal mines, mills or on farms. There were no laws regulating child labor until 1900's.

  • 102. Rap Music And Its Influence On African American Youth Music and society have always been closely related. For years now music has been apart of people's everyday lives all around the world. Having so many different genres out there, it makes it easy to be appealing to so many different ethnic backgrounds. However, one type of genre in particular has seemed to grab the attention of a younger generation. Rap music has undoubtedly had its utmost impact on African American youth, since many of the performers themselves are African American. An overtly masculine culture dominates rap music and creates gender stereotypes that become abundantly popular to the youthful audience. Three constant themes that are found within the rap culture are encouragement of violence, the misogynistic representation of women, an extreme hatred of homophobia. Each theme plays a detrimental role in the process of defining black masculinity as well as shaping the values, morals, and beliefs that its younger audience adopts after tuning into this "gangster lifestyle". Violence is something that has always been associated with masculinity, particularly in the traditional patriarchal society. The strong expectations that are tied to masculinity frequently compel men to display certain attitudes and characteristics such as aggressiveness, power, and even vicious superiority over other men. Given the repression of African Americans, a significant amount of adolescent black men are suffering from a severe self–hatred and a frantic, consequential want to ... When the founding fathers drafted the Constitution their main focus was creating a nation where everyone would be free from the restraints of a controlling government and treated equal. America has always been a nation of freedom, and needs to remain that way. The youth in this country is charged with the task of ensuring that America remains the "land of the free". Without involvement in politics this is not possible. If youth are to maintain the American ideals of freedom and equality it is imperative that they be involved in politics. Voting every four years for the president, who is more of a figure head than anything else, is simply not enough. Young people need to take a more active role in politics such as running for a political office, local or national. This is the only way they will be able to put their beliefs into action and ensure that America upholds it's long standing values of freedom and equality. The youth need to start taking action as soon as they are old enough. However, young people need to be educated on politics and be firm in their beliefs before delving into the world of politics. In recent years the youth have shown a trend of disengagement and apathy toward political involvement. According to "The Good Citizen", a book written by Russell J. According to the market research company Yankelovich, the average person is exposed to about 5,000 advertisements and brands per day (Walker–Smith, 2014). The exposure to such advertisements have caused a detrimental effect on young people, such as the influence of what the perfect body looks like. Today commercials showcase unrealistic versions of the average male and female, causing an increase in eating disorders each year. Advertisements also influence young people by convincing them that it is okay to drink and that there will be no consequences. Advertisements do not show the long term effects that can happen to an individual when they start abusing alcohol; such as the need for blood transfusions or having seizures. They only show the scene where people seem to be having more fun with an alcoholic beverage in their hand. Advertisements also play a role in the food choices young people make. Most food advertisements appear on children and teen oriented shows; and the advertisements they show are unhealthy for young people to consume. Those advertisements are a contributing factor to childhood obesity that may later become adulthood obesity. • 118. Gingsberg Believes America's Youth Must Live up to... Young nonconformists reveal how one particular mode of idealizing youth is an American convention that hinders the progress of past and present generations. The speaker proposes an alternative way to idealize youth because young Americans can disrupt expectations and enforce change. Celebrating young Americans who do not live up to America's expectations allows Ginsberg to celebrate the majority of young people. Realizing the harmful effects that stem from idealizing youth forces the speaker to look to the past. Ben Lee suggests: Ginsberg's use of anaphora forces us to question the historical origins of both social afflictions and collective resistance in Howl, this blurring of the poet's central objects of identification implies that his lamentation for the madness of his own generation is also a lamentation for the blighted hopes and wasted intellects of their precursors (384). Lee notices that Ginsberg's use of anaphora questions "the historical origins of both social afflictions and collective resistance in Howl." The "origins of both social afflictions" and "collective resistance" stems from America's need to impose unrealistic expectations on young people. Ginsberg idealizes America's youth by celebrating their imperfection. • 126. Mtv's Influence on Popular Culture Meghan Balmer 10/20/10 Popular Culture Critical Survey Project It would be hard for one to dispute the fact that MTV has influenced every pop culture trend since its birth in 1981. One could even say that MTV is pop culture. No other media network holds in the palm of its hand the power to control popular cultural evolution the way MTV does. What other media network has influenced and help shape public opinion, filmmaking, newsgathering techniques, presidential politics, and world politics like MTV has? In addition to that, MTV can take credit for reconstructing the music industry (Rushkoss 126). One would be hard pressed to find a person who does not enjoy some type of music. MTV chose popular music as its beating heart, instead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A young male may think that the more half–naked women he has following him around, the more successful he is. This is a bit extreme, but extreme sells. However, the underlying theme is the point here. That theme being that MTV at any given point is trying to sell an image that appeal to its designated viewers. In conclusion, MTV has signified change in the pop culture around us, because it has helped shape the world around us. MTV has drastically changed youth culture around the world, defining popular culture and speaking on behalf of young adults everywhere. MTV has transported its powerful advertising to millions of youths and is often criticized for promoting American culture to the rest of the world. Many intellectuals slam the network for destroying traditions and imposing American values and beliefs thereby forcing a homogenization of world youth culture (Williams 200–215). However, even with all of this critical disapproval, MTV continues to expand globally. Work Cited Barros, Laura, ed. • 130. Study on African American Youth and Young Adults with... This paper proposes to address the psychological needs, behavioral factors, social factors surrounding a stratified sample of African American youth and young adults with incarcerated fathers. In doing so, assessment measures possessing test–retest reliability to assess subjects' mental health conditions, stress related behavior, socioeconomic status, and interpersonal relationships. Incarcerated fathers who are imprisoned for non–violent crimes and are opened to reconcile and/or improve their relationship with their children. Sample will be drawn from a non–profit organization geared toward keeping imprisoned fathers in the Federal Bureau of Prisons and have had some communication with their children via pre–paid phone calls and Corrlinks (an electronic mail system in the FBOP prisoners and their families). Mothers or caretakers will be encouraged to participate in the proposed intervention programs. Introduction Studies have shown that children of incarcerated mothers experience more mental health issues as well as disruptions in their life because, more than likely, the mother was the primary caregiver prior to incarceration. Therefore, more programs for reuniting children with their mothers have been implemented yet the long–time/short–term effects of such programs remain unclear. Additionally, given the effects of maternal incarceration tend to cause more disruption of the lives of youths, an examination addressing reconciling relationships between ... • 134. Desensitization Of American Youth Essay Television has increasingly become the quintessential epicenter of communication, since its invention, in 1927. At any moment in time 2.5 billion people are viewing some form of television broadcast (Ballard). Modern society has introduced various categories of television. These variations range from educational to violent. This broad spectrum makes it hard to generalize the effects it has had on American youth; however, television seems to have increased moral and intellectual degradation. Through violent shows and monotonous news broadcasts, American youths have become desensitized to the poverties, and hardships of the world. This desensitization has had several, and moreover negative, moral impacts on the youths of America. Nevertheless, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each day children are exposed to violent television programs, whether through the news, or through entertainment. Each time a child casually watches a violent program they are further disposed to the concept that that violence is simply a part of a just and moral code. Such values insinuate that following one's passion over reason holds moral ground. Each day on the news youth watch broadcastings, detailing global hardships, and poverties that different regions are facing. An overload of negative news makes these hardships seem like they simply coincide with everyday life, which compromises true good. This desensitization creates a bystander effect, in which people believe that other people will reach out and help; therefore, they do not need to. Currently millions of war refugees are fleeing Syria to prevent being killed. European countries are shutting their borders to these people, forcing them to be slaughtered, with no means of survival. Every news outlet has covered this story, yet no one has reached out to help. This issue has taken a back seat, because people have deemed these acts to be part of the injustices of life. Mother Teresa of Calcutta lived by the concept that each person has the right to not suffer, regardless of situation. This ideal is believed to be the most basic of moral principles, and is growing faint in the midst of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 138. American Youth in the 1960s America has in a short time been established as a nation that symbolizes acceptance and change. It has progressed into a country of equality that finds its foundation in its personal freedoms and the progressive movement of technology, politics, economics, social views, ethics and so forth since the American Revolution. It has been changing rapidly since the influx of immigrants that came here before the Revolution. The 1950s were a happy time. I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver were on television. The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley were popular acts in music. The youth movement of the 1960s was necessary in order for America to progress in social, political, economic, and technological ways that could further America from the 1950s into a new era of personal identity and freedom of expression. It was a time of fathers going to work, mothers staying home and tending to the housework, and kids hanging out in the suburban neighborhoods. The 1950s were the end of World War II which brought back many young serviceman to the states to start families and get jobs. This inflow of young and eager men put a lot of money into industry and goods not available during the war. This created a boom in the economy. Suburbs started to pop up everywhere because all these young men and their families needed housing. Levitt Co. was the reason for this. They built preplanned communities that contained cheap and affordable houses. Most looked exactly the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 142. Essay on Adolescent Violence Abstract "There is no doubt that violence, especially among youth, is a problem in the U.S. today. Since 1993, the U.S. has had the highest rate of childhood homicide, suicide, and firearms related deaths of any of the world's 26 wealthiest nations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1993)," stated the authors of the article. Due to results as stated above by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the questions "what factors cause violent fighting as well as weapon carrying" and "what are assets that may help prevent such violence" come into mind. The article, Adolescent Violence: The Protective Effects of Youth Assets, shows a study that examined the relationships between nine youth assets and six demographic ... One example briefly stated in this article was of the Colombine High School shooting in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999 in which two students who attending Colombine High opened fire in the school, and shot and killed twelve students and one teacher, leaving 28 students injured before killing themselves. These two students, Eric and Dylan, both were in a clique called the "Trenchcoat mafia." The Trenchcoat mafia was a group of outcasts who would wear long black coats everyday, always bragged about owning guns, and disliked people of a certain color or race. The reason that these two students opened fire was because they didn't like being judged or teased by other people because of what they wore and whom they hung out with. The authors stated, "Previous studies have also found that participation in one risk behavior puts youth at peril for participation in other risk behaviors (Flisher & Kramer, 2000) and that carrying a weapon was predictive of involvement in violence." • 150. Alcoholism : Native American Youth Alcoholism: Native American Youth Alcoholism is a prevalent social epidemic for Native Americans, especially among youth between the ages of 13 to 18 that reside on the reservations. Alcoholism and chronic substance abuse among Native America youth is increasing at a rapid rate in the past few years. Alcoholism is risk of substance abuse or dependence is consistently elevated in adolescents who had been victims of assault or who had witnessed violence (Kilpatrick, Acierno, Saunders, Resnick, Best, & Schnurr, 2000). Inherent risks associated with substance abuse range from minor poor judgement errors to life–threating events, for example dose overdose or acute drug hypersensitivity (Beauvais, 1992). Studies have not yet found a clear biological mechanism that would explain alcoholism and excessive drinking, but a number of them have suggested a possibility of some kind of predisposition to the condition (Clinard & Meier, 2015). This paper presents an analysis of family structure, alcoholism diagnosis criteria, and psychological effects associated with chronic alcohol abuse among Native American youth. Family Structures Native Americans on the reservations are at socially and economically disadvantage compared to persons who reside in metropolitan cities. • 154. Ethnicity and the Juvenile Justice System Often times, people in America understand that minority youths are excessively represented in the justice system. Unfortunately, this occurs at every level of the justice system. Not only does it occur in from initial contact with the police, it continues through incarceration. In many cases, young juvenile minority are being discriminated, they come from corrupted developing countries with high levels of crime, and the majority of white youths are from wealthy families. Most young juveniles are constantly being discriminated due to their ethnic background. The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution has been construed to translate that discrimination based on traits such as race are a violation of due process (cite). According to www.futurechildren.org, "the NCCD finds that black youth are more likely than white youth to be formally charged and sentenced to out–of–home placement for the same offense" (futurechildren.org). 50 percent of drug cases involve white youth results in formal processing. More than 75 percent of drugs cases involve many African American youth result in formal processing. Many of the studies show that black youth are given more restrictive dispositions than white youth, even when they have committed the same offence and have the same prior record (www.futurechildren.org). Most of the minority juvenile offenders are more likely to be transferred to adult court than white offenders even though the same crime was committed. This increases the ...
