Ancient Hawaii Culture
Warm sand, blue waves, and the tropical sun–this is what Hawaii is all about. But the beaches and the dramatic landscape is not all Hawaii has to
offer. Hawaii is rich with the culture of its past: fighting, sporting, and celebrating–was a big part of ancient Hawaiian culture.
The Hawaiian Islands may look like they went undisturbed till their discovery in 1778. But unfortunately, that is not completely true. "Hawaii has had
its share of invaders and war." (Fitzpatrick) Geographically Hawaii was cut off from foreign influence, but as with every ancient civilization: war was
inevitable. "Warfare amongst the tribal chieftains of the Hawaiian Islands was common, with fierce battles typically fought to establish political
boundaries and during successional disputes." (Mythical Hawaii) Tribal chieftains and their warriors all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brutal form of unarmed self–defense delivered bone crushing blows that would render an opponent useless. However, that was not all Lua was
used for because "Ancient Hawaiians not only used Lua in warfare but for entertainment as well." (Fitzpatrick)
Sports played a big part in Hawaiian culture because it was in a time designated for peace. "Chieftains and the koa warriors all competed in Olympic
style games during the Makahiki Festival that tested their abilities." (Mythic Hawaii) "The Makahiki Festival was celebrated annually during the four
lunar months of October to February or November to March." (robertshawaii)
There were many sports involved in the Makahiki festival and surfing was among them. "Surfing was once a sport reserved for Hawaiian royalty,"
(Surfing in Hawaii) "and chieftains surfed to claim the title of "conquer of the seas"' (Surfing Hawaiian Culture) Warriors participated in the following:
Huku–Huki, lava sledding, spear catching, and cliff diving. These were some of the many dangerous sports played by Ancient

Hawaiian Mythology Research Paper
Hawaiian mythology is both animistic and polytheistic. Animism is the religious belief that objects, places and creatures all possess a distinct
spiritual essence and polytheism is the belief of multiple deities in one religion (Hawaiian Folk Tales). Hawaiian religion also believes that passed
away souls exist as non–human beings like animals and abiotic objects (Hawaiian Folk Tales). Themythology encompasses the vast Polynesia region
(See Figure 1 for map), and really centers around nature as opposed to other cultures; most deities are associated with the surrounding environment such
as Pele–honua–mea (Pele), Goddess of Volcanoes, and creator of theHawaiian islands (Beckwith). Another example is would be
NДЃ–maka–o–KahaК»i (NДЃmaka), sister of Pele and the two are often known to clash. NДЃmaka is associated with the seas (Beckwith). (See Figure

Robin Wylie has provided a possible explanation for the immense use of nature in Hawaiian mythology; he suggests it could be because of the
influence of their environment. The early Polynesian sailors to first discover the Hawaiian islands must've been astonished. The discovery of new land
prompted the need for an explanation, but without the tools of modern science, the early

Kalaniopu Ula's Life In Hawaii
After the death of Kalaniopuu in 1782 Islands were divided between Kiwalao, Kalaniopuu's son. Kiwalao was declared heir to rule. Kiwalao was
briefly the 7th Ali'i of Kohala, 5th Ali'i of Kona and 3rd Ali'i of Kau, and thus ruler of the island of Hawaii. But what Kiwalao did was what started
problems. Kiwalao gave the honor to Keawema'uhili and he gave himself and others large pieces of land and districts. Kamehameha, his uncles and
Kiwalao's half brother Keouakuahu'ula felt cheated out of the best land creating rivalries. The several Kona district chiefs, unhappy with Kiwala'o's
division of lands made Kamehameha their leader. It started in Ke'ei by Keouakuahu'ula who had cut down coconut trees and killed people. This was

Hawaii: The Ancient Hawaiian Culture
ESSAY– HAWAII:
Hawaii is an isolated volcanic Polynesian island that is located in the middle of North Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is counted as a state of the USA.
Hawaii is at the northernmost part of the prolific "Polynesian triangle". The wonderful country was first discovered and settled by their Polynesian
ancestors anywhere between AD 1190 and 1290. Hawaiians are known as some of the nicest, carefree and caring people in the world all due to their
culture. The people of Hawaii have many aspects that they cherish which warfare, religion and fishing.

The ancient Hawaiians invested plenty of time praying and worshipping and believing in stories of to their gods which they multiple of. They would
also pray at shrines to the more important Gods. To elaborate, the Hawaiians believed that non–living things had spirits and believed in many deities.
One of the Gods is known as Ka–Moho–Ali'i, who is said to be the shark God. In Hawaiian mythology, there is a story involving Ka–Moho–Ali'i stating
that he swam in the area of the islands of Maui and Kahoolawe. When a ship was once lost at sea, Ka–Moho–Ali'i would shake his tail in front of the
fleet. The kahuna (sorcerer, magician etc....) would feed him kava. Ka–Moho–Ali'i would then lead the fleet to their home. Ka–Moho–Ali'i is
supposedly able to take the form of any fish. In a traditional ancient Hawaiian household, many people who were associated with the sea would praise
Ka–Moho–Ali'i, hoping that if they were ever to get lost, he will help them. This links back to the question because it is a story that that shows how

Hawaii and Yellowstone are two of the most visited places each year because of their beautiful surroundings. What most people don't know about
these places is that under the earth's crust molten lava is ripping each apart piece by piece. While Yellowstone is known as a super volcano, the big
island of Hawaii is made up of five different volcanoes. They could both erupt at any minute. Those aren't the only similarities and differences of
Yellowstone and Hawaii though. In the future, scientists predict that Yellowstone will erupt very violently, leaving the United States covered in
inches of ash. While scientists think this will not happen for another 1 to 2 million years it could happen at any minute (Cimons). While, Hawaii's

Gods of the Hawaiians Essay
The Hawaiian Islands are well known for their beauty, tranquility, and unique culture that have shaped this state into what we see today. The special
bond that the natives have formed between themselves and nature is not exactly one of a kind, but it is something that can truly be admired. Around
approximately 300 AD, Hawaii was discovered by Polynesians who arrived by canoe from Tahiti. These migrants brought their polytheistic spirituality
and formed a large intricate society with hierarchies consisting of many chiefs. Alongside the ruling of the chiefs, the newborn Hawaiians followed a
strict belief system known as Kapu akua otherwise known as the "law of the gods". The Kapu was a strict set of rules and restraints that dictated all ...

The strict Kapu made everyday Hawaiian life extremely difficult to live. Offenders were often punished severely with either corporal punishment or
sacrificed to honor the gods. If the offense was great enough, on occasion, the family of the offender was also sentenced to death. Although,
punishment to defectors was harsh, they often had a chance to redeem themselves. It is said that those who offended could flee to a city of refuge
where they had a ritual performed by shamans in order to clean oneself of sin and escape death. Ancient Hawaiians worshipped many gods and
demi–gods. The main god known as Kane, represented life and nature while Ku, represented death and war. According to the Kumuhonua Legend: he
[Kane] formed the three worlds: the upper heaven of the gods, the lower heaven above the earth and the earth itself as a garden for mankind; the latter
he furnished with sea creatures, plants, and animals and fashioned men and women to inhabit it (Beckwith). It was believed that each family had its
own personal god to protect them. Personal gods were thought to live vicariously through the animals that surrounded the islands such as the shark or
pig. Through these very same animals, it was also believed that families could communicate with the spirits of the deceased. Many temples known as

Growing Up In Ancient Hawaiian Culture
Growing up in an environment filled with a variety of cultures, there are words that mean different things and are used in different ways. In Hawaii,
there is an official language, but there is also a slang language, "pidgin", that was used during the era where sugar plantations were very popular. They
created this language so that people of different ethnicities could communicate with one another as they traveled from other countries such as, Japan,
China, Philippines, and Korea. Today, pidgin and the Native Hawaiian language are used amongst the locals allowing us to connect on another level by
keeping our culture alive. Some words, however; have changed since ancestral times from something innocent to something derogatory and insulting.

The History and Culture of Surfing
Surfing is an ancient art and was first known as "he'e nalu", which translates to wave–sliding. However, surfing wasn't simply a fun sport or a task that
these ancient people completed. Instead, it was something that attached them to the sea and they used it to reflect their emotions.
During ancient times, surfers would often rely on priests, who were known as Kahunas, for prayers for good waves. Since proper waves are
important when looking for a good day of surf, this was a crucial part of the process. Kahunas would dance and cite ritual chants, all in the hopes of
pleasing the sea. It was the belief that this process would cause the sea to provide proper waves for the people to surf.

It wasn't long after Velzy's endorsement that movies began to be made. The first surf movie was Gidget and The Endless Summer quickly followed.
These movies created a surf culture that quickly swept the United States and the entire world. With this culture fashion, music and even a special

Eventually boards were shortened from 10 feet to 6 feet, which created a new form of surfing culture, referred to as the "short board revolution". With

The First People From The Polynesians
The first people to arrive in Hawaii were the Polynesians. They sailed from the Island of Marquesas to over 2000 miles across the river in canoes. In
the 1000s–1300s, the Hawaiian settlements populated the islands with farms and shelters in the lower valleys, and where gardens grew on the driest
edges of the valleys. The population grew rapidly during the 1300s – 1500s reaching its maximum size in the 1600s – 1700s. The dominant chief

In the year of 1791, Kamehameha united the armies of Hawaii. And in 1810, continued to unify all of the Islands of Hawaii into one royal Kingdom.
King Kamehameha died nine years later. One year after the death of his father, Liholiho, abolished the ancient kapu system.
In 1820, the first Protestant missionaries arrived on the Hawaiian Islands which filled the void that was left after the end of the kapu system. Hawaii
became a port for traders, seamen, and whalers, and grew rapidly in Lahaina Harbor Maui. However, throughout these years of growth, western disease
took a heavy toll on the Native Hawaiian population.
The Western influence continued to grow, and in 1893, the American Colonists that controlled most of Hawaii 's economy, overthrew the Hawaiian
Kingdom. Five years later, Hawaii became a territory of the United States.
In the 20th century, sugar and pineapple plantations boosted Hawaii 's economy and brought an array of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Portuguese
immigrants. Under the leadership of James Dole, Lanai became known as the "Pineapple Island," and became the world's leading exporter of
pineapple. Hawaii's population is so diverse today due to the mixture of immigrants.

Native Hawaiian Rituals
How do historical Native Hawaiians, and Japanese view death and dying?
In modern day Hawaii the rituals and practices of death, dying, and bereavement are greatly influenced by multiple cultures due to Hawaii being a
melting pot of different ethnicities. Some cultures/ethnicities include the following: Hawaiians, Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese, and Puerto Ricans just to
name a few. Today majority of the family's inHawaii are of mixed religion, ethnicities and cultures their beliefs regarding death and dying are
influenced by multiple cultures and not just one; thus they might incorporate Hawaiian and Filipino and Japanese rituals when someone passes away.

Why Did Hawaii Lose Its Culture
Have you ever felt a sense of pride knowing that you are part of an amazing culture? Imagine having that sense of pride being taken away from you
because that is exactly what is happening in Hawaii. According to Jessica Hui only about 0.2% (30,000) of Hawaii's 1.3 million residents can speak
Hawaiian as a first and second language. Hawaii is losing its culture at a rapid rate. If this problem continues to grow, then Hawaii's economy will be
greatly impacted as well. For instance, if we lose our culture the tourist which is Hawaii's main source of income will stop coming here for vacation

ancient hawaiian rulers including kamehameha (1758 – 1782). In the 19 hundreds Wailuku became the location of the century mission stations and the
birthplace of the great sugar industries. I believe this area was chosen because it separates the past two great water supplies. Now it is a beach front

There are still debates about the origins of Polynesian culture, but one thing we can ensure is that Polynesia is not a single tribe but a complex one.

indigenous peoples of parts of Southeast Asia. It's a sub–region of Oceania, comprising of a large grouping of over 1 ,000 islands scattered over the

A second wave of migrations may have arrived around 1100 AD from Tahiti. The isolated Hawaiians had less and less contact with the rest of the

culture of ancient Hawaii was in full swing!
The Polynesian migration to Hawaii was part of one of the most remarkable achievements of humanity: the discovery and settlement of the remote,
widely scattered islands of the central Pacific. When European explorers found the islands of Polynesia, the common ancestry of the Polynesians was
evident – the inhabitants of widely separated islands looked alike, spoke alike, and had similar cultural practices. Their manufactured products such as
fishhooks, trolling lures, adzes, and ornaments also revealed similarities. And they had the same basic stock of domesticated plants and animals.
The Polynesian people are considered to be by linguistic, archaeological and human genetic ancestry a subset of the sea–migrating Austronesian people

This kind of growth doesn't happen without displacing land, people, animals, etc. Land based resources, people's culture and historical symbols are
often the victims of tourism development in Hawaii. Many of the major resorts have been built on culturally significant sites. Construction of tourist
related businesses have played a huge part in the destruction of ancient Hawaiian burial grounds, archaeological historic sites and sacred places. In
fact, on the island of Kauai, a well–known ancient Hawaiian burial ground was excavated to make room for a huge condominium resort project. Out
of 22 acres of sacred burial grounds, only a one acre parcel was left, and human remains were displaced and moved to make room for the project. This
was devastating to the native Hawaiians who had loved ones buried there for centuries, but seemed to be insignificant to the tourism industry that
seemed only to be worried about their new project and making money. Hundreds of other cultural and historic sites have been bulldozed to make way
for hotels and golf course developments without regard for the environmental effects of their actions. In addition to disrupting the environment with
huge new buildings, many other sites such as ancient temples, house sites, fishing shrines, ceremonial platforms and agricultural have been turned into
tourist attractions and have been misused, abused and disrespected by tourism. This is

Colors of the Wind: Polynesian Style
When you breathe in Hawaii, you breathe in the spirit. The spirituality of the ancient Hawaiian religion can be found all over the island, infusing
its peoples with their stories and energy. It is as if the island is alive itself; wherever you go, you can always feel the boost of energy that the Gods
are giving off. Religion is an integral aspect of Hawaiian life, permeating every day activities and important events such as birth, marriage, and death.
Early Hawaiians believe that nature and shaped events were manifestations and acts of the Gods. Similar to the Ancient Roman religion, there are
many versions to the stories of the gods and goddesses consisting of themes centered on betrayal and romance (Beckwith, Ch:1). Some spirits deceive,
and some are truthful. "Nothing is impossible to the akua," gods represented by nature's elements (Kamakua). Native Hawaiians abided the ancient
Hawaiian law system, kapu akua, or laws of the gods, and would carry out appropriate ceremonies and prayers to maintain a good relation with the
spirits (Hawaii–guide info). They believe that the Gods have the power to inflict injury if angered by breaking the kapu. Failure to abide this law
system was also accompanied by dreadful penalties including various forms of execution (cr.nps.gov). The kapu system was religiously practiced by
the early Hawaiians and sculpted Hawaii's social and political entities until it was overthrown after the death of Kamehameha

Outside Influence On The Hawaii
Outside Influences Negatively Impact Hawaii Widely known as "paradise", Hawaii is a desired place to live and vacation. Families, couples, and
individuals come to take part in the temperate weather and beautiful beaches. However, Hawaii now is nothing like it use to be – the real history
behind this popular chain of islands is rarely told to visitors. Back in early Hawaiian times, Hawaii was self–sufficient, independent, and gorgeous all
around. The number of Native Hawaiians flourished, and everyone helped contribute to the community. All that changed, however, when outsiders
began to settle here in Hawaii. Although the different outside influences may have brought some positivity to Hawaii, the negative side of their arrival
overwhelmingly defeats it.
Upon his expedition on January 18, 1778, English explorer Captain Cook was the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands. While
commanding the Resolution and Discovery to explore the Northwest Passage, Cook and his crew stumbled upon O'ahu and Kaua'i. Native
Hawaiians did not perceive these British sailors as a threat, and in fact "Greeted [Captain Cook] as a sacred high chief or god" ("Captain Cook"
para 1). However, they were not fully aware of the effects of his arrival. According to Peter Pirie, a Professor of Geography at the University of
Hawaii at Manoa, "...the two Cook visits refer to the problem of venereal diseases among the crews... [to] their transmission from the newcomers to the
Hawaiian population" (75).

The Great Islands Of Hawaii There Was Prophecy Foretold By...
King Kamehameha Among the great islands of Hawaii there was prophecy foretold by one of the highest ranking Kapunas. This Kapuna stated that
when a comet lights the hawaiian sky, that year a baby boy would be born, and this baby would be the one to move the great Naha stone that sat on

immigrants arrived, an estimated 1,000 of the 1,300 species on Kauai have gone extinct. Centuries later, the Tahitians arrived and took over the island
from the shorter Marquesans.

As Westerners arrived, Kauai quickly became a leading sugar producer. In Koloa Town, a sugar mill helped to drive this economic boom. Quickly,
other entrepreneurs followed suit to create sugar plantations. They brought in immigrants from across the world to boost the workforce. These new
immigrants gave rise to the unique blend of cultures that exist within Kauai today.
For a brief time period, sugar and pineapple production comprised a large part of the economy. As these industries fell, tourism became increasingly
popular. Ultimately, Kauai lost its constitutional monarchy in 1893. A group of foreigners conspired to end the Kingdom ofHawaii because the
constitution that was being amended was not in their best interests. Following a revolution, Hawaii became a United States territory in the 1900s. Later

Colonization Of The Hawaiian Islands
Introduction
Colonisation of the Hawaiian Islands in the years following Captain James Cook's landing in 1778 had a huge influence on the societal structure, the
ruling system, and the gender roles within the community. With the old culture dismantled, a new one was built on the basis of Christian values,
brought to Hawaii by the missionaries from New England. This essay will give a brief description of the colonisation of Hawaii, and then focus on
the effects this process had on the societal structure, the monarchy, and the gender roles as were widely accepted in society, as well as how these
changes affected other aspects of their culture. It will also briefly explore the effects of the expanding economy due to the opportunities the colonisers
saw for growth and monetary gain.
The Ruling System
A major change to 19th century Hawaiian society, largely caused by the arrival of foreigners into the islands and the acculturation that followed, was
the establishment of a western–modelled monarchy, solidifying Hawaii as an imperial society. In 1810, a Hawaiian chief,Kamehameha I, united the
islands to form a kingdom, using the weapons and advice of the foreign colonisers. "The high chiefs of that era immediately understood the importance
of the foreigner's ships and their weaponry. Kamehameha [...] was especially adept at maximizing the use of Western advisors and war technology in
the advancement of his imperialistic aims." (Pomaika 'i Cook, Withy and Tarallo–Jensen 2003). This

Ancient Hawaii Culture

  • 1. Ancient Hawaii Culture Warm sand, blue waves, and the tropical sun–this is what Hawaii is all about. But the beaches and the dramatic landscape is not all Hawaii has to offer. Hawaii is rich with the culture of its past: fighting, sporting, and celebrating–was a big part of ancient Hawaiian culture. The Hawaiian Islands may look like they went undisturbed till their discovery in 1778. But unfortunately, that is not completely true. "Hawaii has had its share of invaders and war." (Fitzpatrick) Geographically Hawaii was cut off from foreign influence, but as with every ancient civilization: war was inevitable. "Warfare amongst the tribal chieftains of the Hawaiian Islands was common, with fierce battles typically fought to establish political boundaries and during successional disputes." "Chieftains and the koa warriors all competed in Olympic style games during the Makahiki Festival that tested their abilities." (Mythic Hawaii) "The Makahiki Festival was celebrated annually during the four lunar months of October to February or November to March." (robertshawaii) There were many sports involved in the Makahiki festival and surfing was among them. "Surfing was once a sport reserved for Hawaiian royalty," (Surfing in Hawaii) "and chieftains surfed to claim the title of "conquer of the seas"' (Surfing Hawaiian Culture) Warriors participated in the following: Huku–Huki, lava sledding, spear catching, and cliff diving. • 3. Sokology Of Hawaiian Mythology Charles M. Ross Jr. Ms. Lisa Lamkin English II, Period: 2 13 November, 2017 Hawaiian Mythology Research Paper Hawaiian mythology is both animistic and polytheistic. Animism is the religious belief that objects, places and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence and polytheism is the belief of multiple deities in one religion (Hawaiian Folk Tales). Hawaiian religion also believes that passed away souls exist as non–human beings like animals and abiotic objects (Hawaiian Folk Tales). Themythology encompasses the vast Polynesia region (See Figure 1 for map), and really centers around nature as opposed to other cultures; most deities are associated with the surrounding environment such as Pele–honua–mea (Pele), Goddess of Volcanoes, and creator of theHawaiian islands (Beckwith). Another example is would be NДЃ–maka–o–KahaК»i (NДЃmaka), sister of Pele and the two are often known to clash. NДЃmaka is associated with the seas (Beckwith). (See Figure 2 for Visual of Deities) Figure 1 shows the region encompassed by Hawaiian mythology Figure 2: A collection of a few major Hawaiian deities Robin Wylie has provided a possible explanation for the immense use of nature in Hawaiian mythology; he suggests it could be because of the influence of their environment. The early Polynesian sailors to first discover the Hawaiian islands must've been astonished. These migrants brought their polytheistic spirituality and formed a large intricate society with hierarchies consisting of many chiefs. It is said that those who offended could flee to a city of refuge where they had a ritual performed by shamans in order to clean oneself of sin and escape death. Ancient Hawaiians worshipped many gods and demi–gods. The main god known as Kane, represented life and nature while Ku, represented death and war. According to the Kumuhonua Legend: he [Kane] formed the three worlds: the upper heaven of the gods, the lower heaven above the earth and the earth itself as a garden for mankind; the latter he furnished with sea creatures, plants, and animals and fashioned men and women to inhabit it (Beckwith). • 39. Kauai Life In The 1800s As the oldest island in Hawaii, Kauai has a wealth of history. Over the years, it has gone from ancient battlefields to a modern economy. First inhabited around 200 to 600 AD, the original settlers most likely reached Kauai from the Marquesas Islands nearly 2,000 miles away. As these industries fell, tourism became increasingly popular. Ultimately, Kauai lost its constitutional monarchy in 1893. • 40. Colonization Of The Hawaiian Islands Introduction Colonisation of the Hawaiian Islands in the years following Captain James Cook's landing in 1778 had a huge influence on the societal structure, the ruling system, and the gender roles within the community. With the old culture dismantled, a new one was built on the basis of Christian values, brought to Hawaii by the missionaries from New England. This essay will give a brief description of the colonisation of Hawaii, and then focus on the effects this process had on the societal structure, the monarchy, and the gender roles as were widely accepted in society, as well as how these changes affected other aspects of their culture. It will also briefly explore the effects of the expanding economy due to the opportunities the colonisers saw for growth and monetary gain. The Ruling System A major change to 19th century Hawaiian society, largely caused by the arrival of foreigners into the islands and the acculturation that followed, was the establishment of a western–modelled monarchy, solidifying Hawaii as an imperial society. In 1810, a Hawaiian chief,Kamehameha I, united the islands to form a kingdom, using the weapons and advice of the foreign colonisers. "The high chiefs of that era immediately understood the importance of the foreigner's ships and their weaponry. Kamehameha [...] was especially adept at maximizing the use of Western advisors and war technology in the advancement of his imperialistic aims." (Pomaika 'i Cook, Withy and Tarallo–Jensen 2003).
