CHAPTER 14
GOODNESS, PASSION AND IGNORANCE
What color goggles are you wearing?
Lesson-01
Krishna explains to Arjuna in this chapterabout the three
kinds of nature – goodness, passion and ignorance, which
binds all the living beings
WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE GOOD AND SOME PEOPLE ARE
BAD IN THIS WORLD?
Krishna explains that there are 3 principlenatures in this
world: goodness, passion, and ignorance. We become
good or bad dependingon which naturewe choose to
associate with.
A person in goodness is peaceful, pure, kind, selfless,
humble, patient, knows right from wrong, follows rules,
and is self-satisfied.
2. A person in passion is always disturbed, selfish, becomes
agitated by situations, does not know right from wrong,
and is always hankering.
A person in ignorance is lazy, sleepy, proud, cheater,
thinks wrong to be right, and always laments.
Our activities, our choices and our vision of world is
strongly governed by the particularmode we associate
with. If you are wearing red colored goggles, you will see
the whole world as red. Similarly, according to the nature
we have developed, we see the world.
We need to save ourselves from passion and ignorance
and come to goodness. After coming to goodness, when
one serves Krishna, he becomes completelypure and goes
beyond all the three natures.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT WE SHOULD DEFINITELY
AVOID IF WE DON’T WANT TO DEGRADE OURSELVES TO
IGNORANCE?
There are four things that bring a person to most degraded
nature.
Consuming intoxicantslike alcohol,cigarette,
tobacco, and so on, which degrades one’s awareness
3. Eating meat, flesh, or eggs, which causes violence to
others
Gambling, which involves cheating others
Having connectionsoutside marriage, which destroys
our good character
Therefore one should carefully avoid these four things,
which are most dangerous to our well-beingand society’s
well-being.
