This document is an abstract for a project that proposes an automated security and rider safety system for two-wheelers. The system aims to reduce two-wheeler theft and deaths that occur at crash sites or in transit to the hospital. It uses sensors, a microcontroller, GPS and GSM modules to detect accidents and theft attempts, and alert emergency contacts by text with the vehicle's location. In a crash, emergency services would be notified to improve response time. The low-cost system is intended to enhance safety and security for the large number of Indians who rely on two-wheelers as their main mode of transportation.

2. The Requirement
India has the largest number of road accidents in the world. [1] Out of which 22.4% of victims are occupants of two
wheelers. [2] 30% of road accidents victims die at crash site, 14% in ambulance and rest in hospital. [3]
Also, the two wheelers thefts topped the chart of vehicle theft cases reported. [4] Our proposal is to reduce the
two wheelers theft along with the number of deaths which occur at crash site and on the way to the hospital due
to delay in Emergency Trauma Care Services.

of accidental deaths [2]

Drunken driving killed over 10,000 across India in 2011.Minister of state for Road Transport & Highways said
“Intake of alcohol/drugs by drivers resulted in 24,655 road accident & 10,553 fatalities in 2011.”[5]
The system we propose enforces a uniform and well communicated protocol which would help overcoming the
issues of Bike thefts & Rider Safety. Ad Interim, our system also ensures protection from accidents too.
Now days, two wheelers are the most common mode of transportation in the metro cities of India. Most of the
people travel through it. So there is always a chance of vehicle theft and accidents too. Our system avoids the
3. chances of road accidents that occur due to drunken drivers. Also, it ensures the riders’ safety.
The automated nature of our system will minimize the delay involved in notifying friends or relatives in case
of any emergency that occurs with the two wheelers as well as its riders.
The system also has an excellent edge in a scenario where the accident or theft occurs in a remote area or in an
area where there is a low population density which means that there is no passer-by to help. In such a case, the
automated nature of the system is what could save a life and bike too.
Introduction to the Proposed System
In India, the majority don’t own cars and other expensive vehicles for their utility. Hence, a vast percentage of
our country owns 2 wheelers. Most of them don’t have that much space in their house as well as in working
places to park their vehicle. So, there is always a threat for them, of vehicle theft and damage. Also a major part
of road accidents happening in India includes 2 wheelers that don’t have any safety measures; the people
involved in road accidents suffer death. So, we felt the need of safety system that should be of low cost and can
be easily installed on any 2 wheeler for their protection & safety. We propose this low cost system which will
make sure that the vehicle don’t get theft and the accident victim gets medical assistance as soon as possible,
thereby increasing the chances of his survival.
The 2 wheeler is password encrypted that is used to turn on the ignition system (kill switch) of the vehicle. Also, the
system is equipped with the GSM & GPS/GPRS module ( via the Internet ) that maintain the vehicle in constant
touch with the owner of the vehicle, this module gets turn on when anyone tries to steal the vehicle. Also in the advent
of an accident, the system detects the same using its sensors and it immediately sends text to the numbers that has been
fed in the GSM module and also provides his relatives the information of exact location regarding the accident using
4. the GPS tracking. The friends and relatives then confirm that accident is actually happened, after it has been
confirmed, they can file an emergency request at the nearby police station and ambulance so that victim could be
diagnosed as early as possible.
This system is also helpful in case of other emergencies not involving accidents but also like robberies.
Our system mainly comprises of:-
Control Unit: consists of a microcontroller which is basically the brain of the system, it will include:
Texas Instrument’s MSP430 series microcontroller based experimental board kit
Like the MSP-EXP430F5529 or MSP-EXP430FR5739
GSM Unit: will contain module for transferring SMS to the external entities viz. relatives and friends.
SIM 900/1200/1800 based GSM /GPRS modem
GPS Unit:Containing cohesively made GPS module for obtaining the longitude and latitude of the vehicle.
Texas Instrument’s CC4000 GPS Module kit
Power Management Unit:
This unit powers the whole system. It will consist of a buck convertor for stepping down input voltage from vehicle’s battery
and will provide continuous power supply.
Texas Instrument’s TPS5430 - Buck Converter
5. Sensing Unit: The sensing unit would be a combination of pressure, multi-stage impact, and acceleration sensors like
Piezo Shock Sensor, Force Sensitive Resistor Strip, sensor for alcohol detection like MQ303A, sensor for human
head detection in helmet like PIR sensor/Thermal sensor
Details of the Receiving end:-
Communication will be established between the mobile unit and the receiving end via the Internet. The GSM
module will open a TCP socket to communicate with the receiving end. At the receiving end, there will be a
software running, which will listen to incoming data from the mobile unit(s) and will interpret the data to provide
useful stats of the vehicles and alert the rider’s relatives/friends when an alert signal is received from the mobile
unit.
The Google Map API would be used in the software system to display the position of the vehicle on the map. The
whole software system will be operated by a human operator.
The prototype - Technical Specifications and variations from actual
System
In the prototype, we would be using sensors for detecting crashes, alcohol, human head presence in helmet,
keypad for password, a TI microcontroller development board, a GPS module and a GSM/GPRS module, . The
sensors that we would be using in the prototype would be simple force/shock/vibration sensors, alcohol sensors
and PIR sensors mainly because the actual sensors can’t be used on such a small scale model. The microcontroller
actively polls these sensors. (The actual implementation would consider multiple interior and multiple exterior
views.)
In the actual implementation, the whole system would be placed in casing so that it survives the shock of an
accident. This would not be the case in the prototype.
6. Future Application
The high death toll on India's highways is bleeding its insurance firms. This is evident from the fact that public
sector general insurance companies have consistently paid out a whopping Rs 4,000 crore every year since 2007
to settle compensation amounts awarded by the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal.[6]
Hence, this system can be adopted by insurance companies to reduce the amount they have to bear as a person
stand a greater possibility of survival.
