MUSLIM EDUCATION DURING
MEDIVAL INDIA
INTRODUCTION:
VIEWS OF MOHAMMED ON ISLAMIC
EDUCATION:
 The chief aim of islamic education was to
acquire knowledge and to spread the light
of knowledge.According to
Mohammed:`knowledge is a nector and
salvation is impossible without it’.He also
said that the ink of scholar is more holy
than the blood of the martyr.However,the
objectives of education by the muslim
were almost entirely intellectual.It was
gaining of knowledge and training of
mind.
SALIENT FEATURES:
 Community based education madrasa and
maktabs was associated with mosque.
 Writing of Muslim and Mughal history:
Rulers attached importance to writing of
history of their times.Some important
right ups/manuscripts are
Babarnama,Akbarnama etc.
 Islam based education:
Education was influenced by
islam.Educational objectives were to
search the islamic knowledge.Students
were required to memorise holy Quran.
CONTINUE:
 TEACHINGS WERE BASED ON QURAN:
Islam had its origin between 570 A.D and 632
A.D hazrat Mohammed collects his messages in
the holy Quran and his text was used by rulers
for social change.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF MUSLIM
EDUCATION:
 BISMILLAH:
(A ritual at the age of 4).It was the ritual
which was used to be performed by a
maulvi(teacher) when the child attend the age of
4 years,4 months and 4 days.Maulvi used to
recite the relevant recietion from Quran.
 MAKTAB:
(Primary school)Maulvis(Teacher) used to
teach alphabets and verses from Quran.these
were generally attached with mosques.Main
areas of education were:
Quran,namaz(prayer),azaan,converstion and
letter writing.
CONTINUE:
 Madrasa:
There were the centres of higher
learning.These were aided by government
lecturer method was followed.Hostel
arrangement were there for students.
CONTRIBUTION OF MUSLIM RULERS:
 Mohammed Gauri and his successor Qutubudin
contstructed mosques and schools in Ajmeer for
teaching Islam based and Muslim law.Rulers of
slave dynasty like Iltmush,Raziya Begum.
 Tuglaq dynasty also paid attention towards
opening of the schools.Ferozshah Tuglaq opened
a school in Delhi.
 Sikandar Lodi(1489-1519)attached importance to
the involment of Hindus in administration.
 Mughal rulers(Akbar and others) paid more
attention to education.
 Jehangir enacted law of that property and
wealth of any person,who had not legal
heirs,would be utilized for the repar of schools
and religions buildings.
EDUCATIONAL CENTRES:
 Agra:
It was founded by Sikandar lodi.This city was
established as a centre of education.Madarasas
provided education in
literature,mathematics,philosophy,medicine etc.
 Delhi:
Nasiruddin established Nasaria madrasa
here.Gulam dynasty took interest in the
development of Muslim education.
 Bidar:
Mohammed Gawan and Allauddin developed
Bidar as a centre of Muslim
education.Mohammed developed a library at
Bidar.
CONCLUSION:
 So by studying about the condition of muslim
education in medival period we can understand
that at that time Education was limited and
priority was more given to man than woman.
 So the muslim education at that time cannot be
spread to more area,and so many members are
not involved in this education.
