This presentation looked specifically at how we can effectively manage transitions around the building, and support children in 'planning destinations' within the classroom.
2. TOPICS
• How to engage children and hold their attention
• How to support language development
• Supporting transitions from activity to activity
• Moving around the building
• Self help skills
• Including children in jobs, and chores in the classroom
• Drop off and accepting children
5. MOVING ROUND THE BUILDING
• Clear instructions
• Minimise movement
• Ensure a ‘free path’ so the journey is smooth
• Avoid clashing with another group in common areas
• Ensure the children are properly received at their destination
• Avoid rushing the children, and provide comfort and support
8. PLANNING DESTINATIONS
1. Ask children to choose ‘where to’ next
2. Limit choice if they are overwhelmed or
cannot make a decision
3. Support children in engaging with a rich
range of experiences
4. Monitor that ‘all children have a go at
everything’
5. Help to settle a child at a new space,
activity or area (rather than ‘sending’
them)
10. STAND LESS
SIT MORE… Spend more time sitting on
carpets and at tables with
children and less time standing
up.
