Reflective Practice Guidance Logs

Part 1 – Objective Observation
(Clearly identify the problem. Examine the “context” of the problem.)
Date of Observation: February 18, 2013.
Child name: Kaydence Wu and Alyssa Lee
Observer: Pauline Lin
Age group: 13 to 17 months
Setting: Infant Room
Ratio staff: Three staff plus ECE student and eight children
During Free play time at approximately 10am in the morning, a 17 Months old K took the puzzle
pieces in the container off the shelf. She then came and sat in the observers lap. A walks over to K,
stretches arm and then walks towards K who is sitting on ECE student lap with a puzzle container.
As soon as A comes near K. K holds the container tightly and said “eee.”A stared at K. ECE
student said, “A here is another puzzle that you can play with.”

Part 2 – Decision
(Clearly identify the guidance strategy chosen and why the chosen strategy is
Appropriate for this child / situation.)
In the above scenario, I used positive wording, and redirection the child. For example, I
redirected the child and gave her another puzzle piece, so that she could have one too. I have given
her one of the puzzle pieces that were on the floor. As Marion has indicated, “Diverting and
distracting is a form of redirection in which an adult immediately does something to distract a
child…” (Marion, p 132) In this case scenario I have redirected A for another puzzle piece so that
she can have one too play with.
I have also used positive wording for the child by informing the child in a polite way that
there is another puzzle over here. I informed A and told her that A I have a “puzzle piece for you
here.”
Part 3 – Action
(Clearly discuss your actions, the child’s response and the results of the guidance strategy.)
The significant actions I have taken were providing the child with the opportunity of having another
puzzle piece that was on the floor. When A was about to take K puzzle piece, I was able to provide
for her another piece right away to redirect her. Secondly, the child response was she stared at me. I
then gave her the puzzle piece as a result of the guidance strategy. Furthermore, I redirected her and
use positive wording to the child and spoke to them in a polite way to A and K.
Part 4 – Reflection
(Clearly discuss your strengths and needs related to this particular log entry, along with the
changes that you would make if needed.)

Strengths
Some of my significant strengths I’ve had
during this scenario were being able to redirect
the child to another puzzle piece that was on
the floor. I was able to resolve the conflict and
find what the child needed. For example, I
redirected her to give her another puzzle piece
which was on the floor. I was really
responsive, comforting and caring for both
children during this situation. As a result, I
remained calm and stayed at both the children
level at all times.

Needs
Some of the elements I need to improve on are
speaking in a louder voice so I can be heard and
provide more eye contact towards the children.
Furthermore, I can also give more non-verbal
messages because children are still young and
may not understand what I’m trying to
communicate to them.
Discuss the changes that you would make and why you would make them.
A significant change I would make is to not let the child sit in my lap next time. I will let her sit on the
floor instead of my lap and will sit beside her, so she can be more independent. Another significant
change I should have had more materials near me, so I am able to provide the children with some
materials to play with. The reason for this is that the children will have more opportunity to have
different kind of toys to choose instead of just the puzzle piece. In addition, next time I will reconsider
to give her more non-verbal messages for her to understand and provide more eye contact towards the
child when I’m speaking to her.
Self-Evaluation:
I have encountered many challenges while completing the reflective log
assignment but while trying to complete the assignment I have come through a lot of
difficulties. My first most challenging experience I’ve had was time management, as I
was unable to manage my time wisely in order to complete the assignment. Secondly,
some of the questions were quite difficult for me to answer. For example, while trying to
complete the reflective practice guidance logs assignment the parts I had trouble with
were trying to think through carefully about the actions and reflections before answering
the question and making sure the answers were correctly answered. Thirdly, I have
encountered the challenge to demonstrate the strategy when I saw the situation before
acting upon it. I would think of the strategy to use before demonstrating it. Overall, I had
faced many challenges while completing this assignment but I’ve learned new strategies
over time when they were taught to me while I was in class. For example, some of the
strategies I learned were direct strategy, clear messages, and providing choices. I will try
my best to develop and use these strategies next time I see another situation appear like
this again.

Log 3

Pauline Lin – 300568401
Part 1 – Objective Observation
(Clearly identify the problem. Examine the “context” of the problem.)
Date of Observation: February 26, 2013.
Child name: Robert Trabacco and Beatrice Tossan
Observer: Pauline Lin
Age group: 12 to 17 months
Setting: Infant Room
When: During free play time
Ratio staff: Three staff plus ECE student and seven children
Early at approximately 11:00am in the morning near the book shelf couch, 16 months
old R was walking back and forth from one end to the other end. B was standing beside the couch. R
then stopped for a moment, and then he went up to B. R went up to B and he used his right hand and
hit B on the head and B cried, “wah wah”. Then the observer said to R, “be gentle please.”

Part 2 – Decision
(Clearly identify the guidance strategy chosen and why the chosen strategy is
Appropriate for this child / situation.)
The significant strategy I had used above was positive guidance strategies and non-verbal
messages. The reason I have chosen this method for the above situation because I thought this would
be the best approach to the child. As Marion has mention in the Guidance of Young Children, “a
positive guidance strategy focuses on teaching and not punishment...” (Marion, pg. 116) The reason
for this reference, I have taught R to be gentle by showing them hand gestures and padding them
with my palm on their shoulders to show them the meaning of being gentle. The non-verbal /verbal
strategies I used were my body language and being responsive to both the children. I also got down
at the child’s level at all time when communicating with them. Finally, I have spoken to them in an
authoritative caregiving style and used appropriate hand gestures to communicate the message of
being gentle to our friends.

Part 3 – Action
(Clearly discuss your actions, the child’s response and the results of the guidance strategy.)
After I saw this situation appear, I took my actions seriously; I went down to the child’s level
and told R that, “our hands are for playing.” Secondly, I had showed R how to be gentle to our
friends. For example, I have demonstrated to the child to be gentle by showing non-verbal gestures. I
first show R to be gentle by patting B on the shoulders. As the result of the guidance strategy, I have
asked R “can you show me gentle please?” R went to B and pats her on the shoulder and gave her a
hug. Lastly, R looked and smiled at me.

Part 4 – Reflection
(Clearly discuss your strengths and needs related to this particular log entry, along with the
changes that you would make if needed.)

Strengths

Needs

Body language
Non-verbal messages
Responsiveness and caring
Positive guidance strategy
Stayed at the child’s level
Use appropriate strategies to resolve
conflict
 Model for children how to be gentle
with one another by using gestures
 Used positive words such as our hands
are for playing
 Spoke to the child in an authoritative
caregiving style







 Provide more eye contact
 Provide more space for the children so
there not in the corner of the room
 More verbal communication
 Praise the child that he has done a good
job

Discuss the changes that you would make and why you would make them.
The changes I would have to make if I were given this opportunity to do over again, I would
implement an activity, and so this situation will not appear again. Secondly, I will arrange more eye
contact for both the child and not only just one of the children. I make sure there is enough private
space for both the children to demonstrate the strategy again because the corner was a bit too crowded
with other children surrounded.

Self-Reflection
Overall, during the course of this assignment I have encountered many challenges one of
my most challenging experience was making sure I was doing the strategy correctly to demonstrate to
the children the strategies which I learned in class from my professor. Some of the questions were still
challenging to answer because I had to think the questions thoroughly before answering upon the
questions. For example, the action and the guidance strategy used were quite difficult to answer to find
references because it took me some time. Secondly, time management was another factor I had come
across to finishing the assignment due to the amount of assignments that I was given to complete the
task. Furthermore, even though children are still young at this stage they will learn from the mistakes I
have taught them. Over the past few weeks I have observe the children now are showing body
language for example they are showing gentle to their friends and offering the toys with one another.
