2. Song list:
• Mirror (Bruno Mars/ Lil Wayne)
• Monster (Eminem / Rihanna)
• Love the way you lie (Eminem / Rihanna)
• Till I collapse (Eminem / Nate Dogg)
I looked through a group of songs which I have listed above. I felt like I wanted to make an emotional video and all the songs
above contain a lot of meaning.
Firstly, I have Bruno Mars’ Mirror which is all about self reflection and who you are as a person and I thought there were lots of
good imagery I cold have involved within a music video. I could use Andrew Goodwin's view on that lyrics can match with the
images you see on screen.
Secondly, Monster was a head that popped into my mind. Eminem is a very emotional rapper and this song is about how the
sleeping pills are very difficult to get over and that they are metaphorically a monster that is under his bed that keep calling to
him. It talks about addiction and the struggles of getting over addiction. I feel that would be a very good narrative to talk about
and show in video format.
Penultimately, Love the way you lie is the second Eminem I thought of. Its about how even the worst of relationships can be the
most fulfilling and also how they are incredibly hard to get out of and how much one person can be dependent on another. I
could personally include a love story between a boy and a girl or even put a spin on Eminem’s music as he hasn’t got a video out
that includes two people of the same sex and that could be a fun concept to play with as it would appeal to an audience Eminem
struggles with as a lot of people think Eminem is homophobic, it would be interesting but difficult.
Finally, I chose Till I Collapse because lots of ideas went running through my head and I love that it is inspired by Queen’s ‘We
Will Rock You’. It additionally features Snoop Dogg’s cousin in Rap which is Nate Dogg and I think it would be a fun video to film
as I could make it very action based which would grab the attention of the viewer of the video.
3. Till I collapse Ideas
• Stomp, stomp, clap made famous by Queen
• References to the 7 supposed best rappers / artists of all time but can edit them in
they have to be included within original content.
• Eminem feels as though he is misinterpreted by the government and this song is
about his struggling against them and not giving up against them
• Have images of people stomp and hand clapping
• Boxing
• Fighting for survival / family
• Show the artist performing the song (chorus and versus)
• Someone training for a fight
• Lots of small fights leading up to the biggest fight of the characters life
• Struggling in fight and then they find the ‘inner strength’ to beat the other fighter
• Climax just before fight or character getting angry and shouting at wall and hitting it
• Video could end with fighter winning and then collapsing to leave an open narrative
on what has happened to the fighter
Below is the notes I made after deciding to choose ‘Till I Collapse’ as the
music video I would like to create. These were ideas that came to my head
when listening to the lyrics of the song. It helped me come up with my own
imagery for the music video. I also analysed the lyrics and came up with
shots for the music video. To add further I researched inspiration for the
song too and tried to use those choices to influence my music video too.
This image is of UFC fighters Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm. When I was
thinking about my music video I was thinking about an underdog and this
fight was a good example of an underdog winning when they had a lot
against them. Holly Holm should not have won this fight but as the fight
went on many could see Holly deserved the knock out and I was thinking of
involving a an underdog in my music video so the viewer at the end is
routing for the fighter who clearly deserves it and not just wins dependent
on reputation.
4. My music video idea
The song ‘Till I Collapse’ by Eminem does not have an original music video so there is nothing to base it off
apart from the song itself. This means the lyrics are much more open to interpretation. The genre for the song
is hip hop / rock as it uses elements of Queens ‘We Will Rock You’ but also keeps to the genre Eminem is
known for which is hip hop.
My idea for the music video is to have a narrative of a boxer who has to work hard to make it to be a
champion and that they will do anything to win a fight as they have responsibilities to their daughter and the
mother of the daughter. The video could begin with them training and then doing a few fights to lead up to
the big fight which will make them famous and allow them to support the family for the rest of their life’s. The
video will build up and come to a final finish when the fighter wins the biggest fight of their life and they are
celebrating around the ring.
I would also like to include cuts into a performer rapping the song so that the video has lots of variety as it
lasts a long time and it will help cut from one scene to another with the artist performing in the middle.
I have additionally looked at all the lyrics and analysed where you could have visuals that link to the lyrics that
are being mentioned in the song. For example when Eminem talks about the 7 supposed greatest rappers in
history who get ‘shit in’ there could be visuals of the performer or someone else ripping up images o these
artists to state that they are not the best.
As mentioned before the song is based of the largely famous “stomp, stomp , clap” from the Queen song ‘We
Will Rock You’ and this could be added to the video with people stomping and clapping possibly in the
audience of the fights and there could be a banner of Queen in the crowd to reference them and create a
media crossover as another band would be mentioned also and the banner will have underlined meaning of
how this song was made etc…
5. My digipak idea
My digipak would be a six panelled
digipak with one slot for the song
itself and it would have images of
the fighter in the video and all the
opponents they have faced and an
image of the two rappers who have
performed the song for the star
appeal. The song itself sounds very
dark and not so upbeat so that
makes me think that the colours for
the digipak would be darker and
not so bright. I would definitely
include the colour red as that
portrays the colour of blood and
injury which boxers go through as
they are fighting and training.
CD
To the bottom right is the front page of the digipak and I would have an image of one
of our actors dressed as a rapper posing. This would imitate Eminem and add star
quality to the digipak as people will see the digipak cover and establish that the person
is the artist and identify that it is an album by the actor we have chosen. The image in
the mock up is of Eminem and Nate Dogg as they are the two artists who perform the
song.
The rest of the digipak panels contain images of well
renowned boxers like the upcoming Anthony Joshua
and legendary Muhammed Ali. These two are
infamously known and this would add to the star
quality even more because everyone knows who
these two boxers are due to the status they hold. The
boxers would be replaced with pictures of our actors
dressed in boxing gear and we would obviously
presume that the actors are of the same status of the
other boxers located all over the mock up digipak.
Till I collapse
The title of the
song and artist
would go across
the front of the
mock up so
people knew
who was the
artist and what
the song is.
Eminem Ft. Nate Dogg
In the blue spacing is where I would put exclusive facts about the song and interesting facts. Having these additions
would help me sell the digipak to the audience more as it gives the digipak added value. It would also add a lot
more to the digipak as it wouldn’t just be images of our actors dressed as boxers. It would entice the audience to
read the digipak as they may be interested in what information it has on its covers.
Next, the blue lines across Anthony Joshua represent the
additional songs that would feature within the digipak,
these songs would most likely come from Eminem’s ‘The
Eminem Show’ album that he brought out in 2002. This
again would have added value as you are getting more
than just one song from the digipak.
The CD would be
placed in the
centre as I feel it
would look great
as it would be
surrounded by
these inspiring
boxers and would
leave some
people in
amazement as
they would also
be inspired by the
images that are
on the digipak.
